Religion, Morality,

 and Politics

I do not remember how old I was when I heard the statement “Never argue about politics or religion” – I was very young and did not understand the import of the statement at the time. As age and experience has now taught me it is very important to God that Christians stand up for all things that are approved by “HIM – GOD” - (Eph. 6:10-13 - 10 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. 11 Put on the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. 12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. 13 Wherefore take unto you the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand (KJV). We may also appeal to the truthfulness of the passage of Scripture found in Jude 3 - cf. Jude 3-5 - 3 Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints. 4 For there are certain men crept in unawares, who were before of old ordained to this condemnation, ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness, and denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ. 5 I will therefore put you in remembrance, though ye once knew this, how that the Lord, having saved the people out of the land of Egypt, afterward destroyed them that believed not (KJV).

Yes, we must stand up for and defend the Biblical teaching regarding religious, moral, ethical, and political lifestyles and live our lives accordingly.

1.     RELIGIOUS AREAS - If we are to be approved by Almighty God we must defend and occupy our place as true Christians are obligated and

Defend true religion in all its form and practices after the Divine Pattern (i.e. the Divine Pattern is revealed via the Holy Scriptures). Whenever men seek to function in religious activities without Divine Authority (i.e. from human wisdom rather than Biblical Revelation), their efforts must be resisted by those who contend earnestly for the faith, once delivered to the saints – [Jude 3]. Since true Christians are God’s representatives here on earth in any generation they must allow their voices to be heard and their websites must contain effective exposure of error and evil proposals presented by false teachers and evil conspirators.

2.     MORAL – Christians are to uphold and stand firmly upon

those principles that were revealed to the first Christians clearly revealed in that portion of the Bible known as the New Testament. In the NT may be found the Divine instruction regarding morality that Christians are to live by and make every effort to incorporate within their life – cf. Phil. 2:12-13

12 Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.

13 For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.

Acts 2:42 – and they continued steadfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers (KJV).

1 Cor. 15:58 -

Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye steadfast, un-moveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labor is not in vain in the Lord (KJV).

Gal. 5:19-25 –

19 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, 20 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, 21 Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God. 22 but the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, 23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. 24 And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts. 25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit (KJV).

CONSIDER THIS:

The preceding Scripture references give man an idea of the kind of morals and ethics that the Christian must have to please God. The false teaching that a person - “once acknowledging God is locked into eternal life” is false teaching. Those that live and abide within the instruction of God’s Written Word after becoming a Christian (i.e. through FAITH, REPENTANCE, CONFESSION OF CHRIST, and BAPTISM (i.e. immersion) – “for the remission of sin” will see God someday. These things we must teach and defend as this 21st Century begins… Dear brethren, make no mistake about it the need to stand, defend, and be counted for God is urgent.

3.     POLITICS – The Bible is clear on the kind of government in secular affairs that God approves. The government that God approves throughout history has had certain qualities that encourage the support of the human masses. Let us examine some of those qualities found in the Bible:

God provides a basis upon which to determine the quality of any government under which Christians live. That gauge is found in Rom.13:1-7 – 1 let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God.

2 Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation.

3 For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? Do that which is good, and thou shall have praise of the same:

4 For he is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil.

5 Wherefore ye must needs be subject, not only for wrath, but also for conscience sake.

6 For for this cause pay ye tribute also: for they are God's ministers, attending continually upon this very thing.

7 Render therefore to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honor to whom honor (KJV).

CONSIDER THIS:

Therefore; whenever a government under which Christians live becomes oppressive, hedonistic, and abusive toward its masses it is not the kind of government than encourages submission of the Christian. Yet, whenever a government becomes Godless; men of faith and purity will rise to seek changes through the ballot box and will not support that officer (i.e. be it

Local, state, or national) SEE THE NATURE OF GOOD GOVERNMENT – SEE ROMANS 13:1-7 AGAIN.

CONCLUSION:

Indeed, the Christian is obligated to support good (i.e. righteous) government. The Christian is also to submit to the governmental authorities and the citizen Christian is obligated as such to cry out when a government is failing in their responsibility to citizens and to Almighty God.

GOD KNOWS

By Garreth L. Clair

Often today we become careless and allow our mind to wander off into forbidden places. Most of us think about many things that, if pursued could lead us far away from steadfastness in Christ’s teaching. Yet, because we are equipped with “free-moral-agency” and subject to make wrong and sometimes sinful decisions about life and conduct we must be careful to keep our thoughts and desires under control. We know that the Bible [i.e. God’s perfect instruction Book] tells us that we may have problems about our choices in life, note the following instruction from God about these matters of choice – “God Knows” what we need to possess a healthy spiritual life:

*** Jeremiah 10:23, “O Jehovah, I know that the way of man is not in himself: it is not in man that walks to direct his steps.”

CONSIDER THIS:

This passage surely teaches us that without appealing to God’s instruction Book, we cannot live correctly [i.e. acceptable to God] without His help, “Indeed, God Knows!”                                                                                                                        *** Psalms 119:77,77 Let thy tender mercies come unto me, that I may live; for thy law is my delight.”                                   *** Psalms 119:144,144 Thy testimonies are righteous for ever: give me understanding, and I shall live.”

*** Psalms 119:175-176,

175 Let my soul live and it shall praise thee; and let your ordinances help me.176 I have gone astray like a lost sheep; seek thy servant; for I do not forget thy commandments.” ASV

CONSIDER THIS:

The previous three Psalms teach us that the writer [i.e. probably David], understood that without God’s instructions and his own personal conformity to them he was without hope in the world. Indeed, “God Knows!”

*** Matthew 4:4-10,4 But he answered and said, it is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.5 Then the devil takes him into the holy city; and he set him on the pinnacle of the temple,6 and said unto him, If thou art the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and, On their hands they shall bear thee up, lest haply thou dash thy foot against a stone.7 Jesus said unto him, Again it is written, Thou shall not make trial of the Lord thy God.8 Again, the devil takes him unto an exceeding high mountain, and showed him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them;9 and he said unto him, all these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me.10 Then said Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shall worship the Lord thy God, and him only shall thou serve.” ASV

CONSIDER THIS:

Jesus [the Son of God], recognized and acknowledged that man’s wellbeing depends upon the Word of God to make him acceptable. I do not know how mankind could survive in the world without input from God, God provides the instruction that man needs to live well here in the world and to finally come to judgment in an acceptable condition:

Revelation 2:10,10 Fear not the things which thou art about to suffer: behold, the devil is about to cast some of you into prison, that ye may be tried; and ye shall have tribulation ten days. Be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee the crown of life.”

2 Timothy 4:6-8,6 For I am already being offered, and the time of my departure is come. 7 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the course, I have kept the faith: 8 henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give to me at that day; and not to me only, but also to all them that have loved his appearing [i.e. coming – appearing].” ASV

“GOD KNOWS” what we need and has provided the Bible [i.e. the Written Word of God] to direct our ability to make correct choices between good and evil. Indeed we can live “good and acceptable lives here in spite of our humanity if we will seek God’s instruction and “walk therein.”

Brotherhood (Part 1)

The Bible concept of brotherhood deals with a relationship between people that requires a number of qualities that many church member’s today lack. This impression that I suggest is the result of observation among church members over fifty years within that fellowship.  I have observed this impression from within the system (i.e. as an active member in the church of Christ). I do not consider myself to be an authority on the subject of behavioral habits of church members but the facts have been and still are observable to anyone who is conscious of the Biblical teaching regarding this matter.

            There is a right (acceptable to God) disposition that members of the Body of Christ are to possess;

Consider This:

Some of those qualities that church members must posses are:

Gal. 5:22-6:10, 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness , goodness, faith, 23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

24 And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts. 25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. 26 Let us not be desirous of vain glory, provoking one another, envying one another. Gal. 6:1, 1 Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted. 2 Bear you one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ. 3 For if a man think himself to be something, when he is nothing, he deceiveth himself. 4 But let every man prove his own work, and then shall he have rejoicing in himself alone, and not in another. 5 For every man shall bear his own burden. 6 Let him that is taught in the word communicates unto him that teacheth in all good things. 7 Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. 8 For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting. 9 And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not. 10 As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith. (KJV)

The Christian in their relationship as well as disposition toward other Christians in the local congregation is always to be as brethren - James 4:10-11, 10 Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up. 11 Speak not evil one of another, brethren. He that speaketh evil of his brother, and judgeth his brother, speaketh evil of the law, and judgeth the law: but if thou judge the law, thou art not a doer of the law, but a judge. (KJV)

1 Peter 1:22, Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently:

1 John 2:7-10, 7 Brethren, I write no new commandment unto you, but an old commandment which ye had from the beginning. The old commandment is the word which ye have heard from the beginning. 8 Again, a new commandment I write unto you, which thing is true in him and in you: because the darkness is past, and the true light now shineth. 9 He that saith he is in the light, and hateth his brother, is in darkness even until now. 10 He that loveth his brother abideth in the light, and there is none occasion of stumbling in him. (KJV)

Heb. 3:12-13, 12 Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God. 13 But exhort one another daily, while it is called to day; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin. (KJV) - 1 Tim. 4:6, If thou put the brethren in remembrance of these things, thou shall be a good minister of Jesus Christ, nourished up in the words of faith and of good doctrine, whereunto thou hast attained.

The church universal is to be considered a brotherhood under the care of Jesus Christ (i.e. the head and savior of the Body – Eph. 5:23-24, 23 For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the savior of the body. 24 Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing.

The relationship within the Body of Christ as well as within the local congregation is to be love. Now, love is paramount in our dealings with one another in the church; if we do not possess love for one another we will find that our service to God is boring, unsatisfactory, with regret, unstableness, with dread and we will find no happiness or peace in our relationship. Since the Bible indicates that love is paramount to the brotherhood concept taught via the Holy Scriptures let us understand from the following reading that love is a key quality to brotherhood:

1 Cor. 13:13, And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity. (KJV)

Gal. 5:22-25, 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love , joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, 23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. 24 And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts. 25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. (KJV)

Brotherhood (Part 2)

In a previous article I discussed the nature of the brotherhood that all Christians belong to. The brotherhood relationship requires certain actions on the part of each person who is a part of it:

  • A person must hear (i.e. understand) the gospel – Rom. 10:17
  • A person who becomes a part of it is to believe the gospel – Mark 16:15-16;
  • A person must repent of past sins – Luke 13:3; Acts 2:38
  • A person must confess with the mouth that Jesus Christ is the Son of God (i.e. the Jew’s Messiah) – Romans 10:9-10
  • A person must be baptized (i.e. immersed) in water – “for the remission of sins”) – Acts 2:38; Romans 6:1-6; 1 Peter 3:21 NOTE:

The previous 5 point plan of God makes one a Christian (i.e. a babe in Christ; a new Creature and a brother in the vast brotherhood of the saved) – SEE Acts 2:47

After one has exercised their faith and obedience in becoming a Christian they are to seek membership in a sound congregation. A general example of this action may be found in Paul’s actions recorded at Acts 9:26-28, 26 and when Saul was come to Jerusalem, he assayed to join himself to the disciples: but they were all afraid of him, and believed not that he was a disciple. 27 But Barnabas took him, and brought him to the apostles, and declared unto them how he had seen the Lord in the way, and that he had spoken to him, and how he had preached boldly at Damascus in the name of Jesus. 28 And he was with them coming in and going out at Jerusalem. (KJV)

As part of the Brotherhood the new Christian is to participate in the brotherly activities of the local church where they have placed their membership (i.e. so that they can participate in the worship functions and learn (i.e. grow into mature Christians) over time. Some of those activities that they will participate in with other Christians are:

  • The Lord’s Supper – Acts 20:7
  • The opportunity to contribute of their money into the weekly collection – 1 Cor. 16:1-2
  • The song service - 1 Cor 14:15; Heb 2:12
  • The teaching and preaching – Acts 20:7
  • The prayer service – 1 Tim 2:8; 1 Thess 5:17

NOTE:

1.                  These previous five items constitute the spiritual worship that the Lord accepts – John 4:24, “God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth. (KJV)

2.                  Since the Lord’s Day (i.e. Sunday) occurred weekly; the Christian will proceed to perform these worship activities each 1st Day of the week – Acts 20:7.

Brotherhood (Part 3)

1 Peter 2:17, Honor all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the king. (KJV)

We continue our study of the Biblical concept that all Christians constitute a vast brotherhood that includes all the “saved from sin” people. This is surely a fact as we consider the circumstance regarding that reality for examination and edification via this medium. There an be great knowledge imparted and received via the printed page as many in the past have provided such for us; consequently as we have understood the Bible and Bible related issues and information we continue to write so that others may use our ideas and views as spring boards to even greater areas of understanding for others. As Paul the great apostle has instructed man in - 2 Timothy 2:2 and the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also. (KJV)  May we always be conscious of the fact that whatever we say, do, or write may have an impact on another for their good in understanding and proceeding in the way of God.

AFTER BECOMING A CHRISTIAN:

I.e. being added to the Brotherhood; one understands that to be in the Body of Christ

I.e. The universal church – having Christ as head and all members as the body;

Being aware of the fact that the universal church cannot be activated because its head is with the Father and Holy Spirit waiting the trumpet of that last day when all will arise from wherever they may meet the Lord face to  face -

(i.e. the Righteous Judge - . 2 Tim 4:8, Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge , shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.

Knowing that the Scriptures will be the standard of judgment – John 12:48

AFTER ESTABLISHING MEMBERSHIP IN A LOCAL CONGREGATION:

(I. e. obligations to the Lord and to the membership)

Faithful attendance to the local meetings and occasions of study – Hebrews 10:24-25

Grow in grace and knowledge as opportunities are presented – 2 Peter 3:18

Work at being saved; do everything right (i.e. according to God’s instruction via the Holy Scriptures – Phil. 2:12

Teach others the truths that you know – 2 Tim 2:2

Always be faithful to your commitment - 1 Cor 1:9, God is faithful, by whom ye were called unto the fellowship of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord. (KJV)

Eph 1:1, Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, to the saints which are at Ephesus, and to the faithful in Christ Jesus: (KJV)

Col 1:2, to the saints and faithful brethren in Christ which are at Colosse: Grace be unto you, and peace, from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. (KJV)

1 Tim 1:15, this is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief. (KJV)

glclair@aol.com - February 6, 2009

Brotherhood (Part 4)

1 Peter 2:17, Honor all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the king. (KJV)

The great Brotherhood is involved in a great effort; primarily to evangelize the whole earth – Matthew 28:18-20, 18 and Jesus came and spoke unto them, saying, all power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. 19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: 20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen. (KJV)

This is an assignment from the Lord who desires to save all mankind from their sins – John 3:16, For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.(KJV)

This great work is being undertaken by local congregations all over the world as they with their personnel and resources work to the extent of their ability (i.e. with their own resources – including personnel, money and supplies) - Eph 4:12, For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry , for the edifying of the body of Christ: (KJV)

Consider This:

There is no instruction from the Lord regarding the pooling of resources for any of the work that The Lord has assigned the congregation to do. The Lord expects each congregation to equally utilize their resources to accomplish the work that they are assigned.

This process is also sufficient in the other area of the local congregation’s work (i.e. Edification and Benevolence). To establish super facilities to do any of the work assigned is to suggest that the Lord’s methods are insufficient to accomplish that which He has assigned. Yes! Jesus (the head of the church is the one responsible for the instruction via the Written Word that tells the local congregation how it is to function); consequently if we are not satisfied with the Biblical method we are suggesting that the Holy Scriptures are inadequate to direct us as a people. I cannot support this philosophy in any fashion.

I consistently hold to the philosophy that the Holy Scriptures is adequate for all that man needs in this life and to live so as to experience a happy resurrection in the end – cf.

Rom 10:17, so then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. (KJV)

Gal 6:6, Let him that is taught in the word communicate unto him that teaches in all good things (KJV)

Col 3:17, And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him. (KJV)

1 Thess. 2:13, For this cause also thank we God without ceasing, because, when ye received the word of God which ye heard of us, ye received it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which effectually worketh also in you that believe.

Heb 2:2-3, 2 For if the word spoken by angels was steadfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just recompense of reward; 3 How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him; (KJV)

James 1:21-23, 21 wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls. 22 but be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. 23 for if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass: (KJV)

The Road to Spiritual Health

There are many people who are ill today, suffering from dangerous maladies. Although this is not new, there are a greater number of people suffering from illness. It seems that in spite of the fact that there are new cures for many of the serious diseases that afflict mankind the number of people expiring increases each year. Many of these people will expire from cancer, heart problems, venereal diseases, and illegal drug abuse. Indeed, most of these deaths and others occur to people who have never considered the greatest disease of all that affects the living and those that die.

That disease is “sin”. Yes! Many people never consider the fact that they may die some day (Heb. 9:27). Most of us are unconcerned with the idea of death until we reach an old age. Yet many people die before they reach 70 years of age. A large number of the population in America will die while still young due to accidents, illegal drug abuse, venereal diseases, and other factors. Many of these will never have thought of death until it suddenly takes them away from the living. Most of the people who die while still young never consider the death of their soul (i.e. eternal separation from God) -  Heb. 9:27-28, 27 And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment: 28 So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation. (KJV)

Yet, to die while still in sin means that one will never go to heaven (i.e. a glorious paradise prepared for all the “saved from sin” people of all ages). Because of this alarming fact I want to let you know that God loves you and does not want you to die and never know him (John 3:16). I want to introduce you to the God of the Bible and God’s Heaven prepared for the people who have been saved from their sins and have lived and died as faithful children of God - cf. 1 Cor 2:9, But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him. (KJV)

You need not worry and fret about these matters while you are able to do something about your status with God. You can make your plans to go to heaven someday by coming to the Lord on His terms – cf. Matt 11:28-30, 28 Come unto me , all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light. (KJV)

For a better understanding of this process of becoming a Christian and gaining confidence in your future with God please contact us at glclair@aol.com or send us a request by U.S. Mail and enroll in a 7 lesson Bible correspondence course that will assist you in knowing God and God’s plans for your future. Remember this; we do not know what tomorrow holds for us; while we are healthy and alert we ought to consider each day as a wonderful gift from God and plan to be with Him someday.

Obedience

Many people in America today have lost respect for the honor in obedience to authority and to experience. I refer to the attitude of those who are of the persuasion that their wishes and rights come first. I have had the unpleasant experience to see this attitude displayed by people from the “baby boomer generation” to the present time. It seems that the disposition to be independent and self sustaining is ingrained in many Americans regardless of whether they can afford it or not. Many people consider themselves to be privileged to have anything that they want at the expense of others. We have come a long way in America from the “carry your own load” and “build your own life with your own initiative.” Today many want to build their life on the work and sweat of others rather that using common sense and integrity to build their own life. This is an ungodly passion as is indicated in – cf. 2 Thess. 3:10, For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat. (KJV)

1 Thess. 4:11, And that ye study to be quiet, and to do your own business, and to work with your own hands, as we commanded you; (KJV)

Gal. 6:4-5, 4 But let every man prove his own work , and then shall he have rejoicing in himself alone, and not in another. 5 For every man shall bear his own burden. (KJV)

While we admit that this mind set is destructive to family, labor and management, marriage, adherence to God’s instruction, and family values it is also a curse to the Biblical concept of obedience. You see, everything that God has provided for mankind is predicated upon man’s willingness to obey and keep on obeying God throughout life. Indeed, the blessings that God promises to man are dependent upon man’s constant faithfulness (i.e. obedience to His instructions via the Bible) – cf. 1 Peter 5:5-6, 5 Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble. 6 Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time: (KJV)

James 4:7, Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. (KJV)

Heb. 13:17, Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves: for they watch for your souls, as they that must give account, that they may do it with joy, and not with grief: for that is unprofitable for you. (KJV)

Col. 3:18-20, 18 Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as it is fit in the Lord. 19 Husbands, love your wives, and be not bitter against them. 20 Children, obey your parents in all things: for this is well pleasing unto the Lord. (KJV)

1 Cor. 16:15-16, 15 I beseech you, brethren, (ye know the house of Stephanas, that it is the firstfruits of Achaia, and that they have addicted themselves to the ministry of the saints,) 16 That ye submit yourselves unto such, and to every one that helpeth with us, and laboureth. (KJV)

Rom. 13:1-6, 1 Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers . For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God. 2 Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation. 3 For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same: 4 For he is the minister of God to thee for good. (KJV)

As we enter the year 2009 I am greatly concerned about the disposition of the people that inhabit this earth. Will we be able to continue as a nation and be able to correctly react to the constitution of our country with submission or will we continue to reject the concept of submission to authority both of man and of God? I pray that this attitude and conditioning of these current generations may cease with these afore mentioned attitudes and concepts discussed in this short article. The hope of future generations will depend upon a change back to the hopes and desires of the founders of this nation and the prerogatives of Almighty God revealed to us via His book (i.e. the Bible) – cf. 1 John 2:3-4, 3 And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments. 4 He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments , is a liar, and the truth is not in him. (KJV)

1 John 3:22-24, 22 And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments , and do those things that are pleasing in his sight. 23 And this is his commandment, That we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us commandment. 24 And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him, and he in him. And hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us. (

John 14:7, If ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also: and from henceforth ye know him, and have seen him. (KJV)

John 14:23-24, 23 Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him. 24 He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings: and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father's which sent me. (KJV)

John 15:10-14, 10 If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love ; even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in his love. 11 These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full.

12 This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you. 13 Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. 14 Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you. (KJV)

Consider This:

Is it possible that this is the primary reason that many people have no interest in religion at all? Perhaps the last 5—60 years have been the most productive for Satan’s plans to destroy man. Man is a free-moral-agent and is responsible for whatever situation he finds himself in; therefore if man desires to improve himself, his family, or his government he must first submit to God. You see, man cannot find his way without God’s guidance – cf. Jeremiah 10:23.

Working for God

The greatest enjoyment in life is serving God as a gospel teacher. I have been at the work for God through a variety of circumstance, yet I have never considered turning back and giving up the work that I so love; “preaching the gospel.” There are many of us who preach the gospel throughout the world and have been through many hardships and disappointments but we have also experienced many joys. The joys are of such a wonder that they cancel out the disappointments that come with the territory.

1.         As Paul says when he was preparing to leave the elders and members of the church at Ephesus for the last time; Acts 21:13, Then Paul answered, what mean ye to weep and to break mine heart? For I am ready not to be bound only, but also to die at Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus. (KJV)

2.         As Paul also says regarding his willingness to preach under any circumstance; Rom. 1:15-17, 15 so, as much as in me is, I am ready to preach the gospel to you that are at Rome also. 16 for I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. 17 For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, the just shall live by faith. (KJV)

3.         Paul address to his brethren at Corinth; 2 Cor. 12:14-15, 14 Behold, the third time I am ready to come to you; and I will not be burdensome to you: for I seek not yours, but you: for the children ought not to lay up for the parents, but the parents for the children. 15 And I will very gladly spend and be spent for you; though the more abundantly I love you, the less I am loved.

Consider this:

The older we become the greater our appreciation for the privilege of serving God and our brethren. The joy found in the brotherhood with so many is surely only available to humankind through our interaction with other brethren/sisters in Jesus Christ. The value of brotherhood cannot be underestimated today or for any period in history for that matter. We are helped, assisted, encouraged, and supported by our brethren who love and care for us. Thank you brethren for being there for us as we work the works of God jointly – cf. Col. 1:10, 10 that ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God; (KJV)

1 Thess. 1:3, Remembering without ceasing your work of faith, and labor of love, and patience of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ, in the sight of God and our Father; (KJV)

2 Tim. 4:5, But watch thou in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, make full proof of thy ministry. (KJV)

Titus 3:1-2, 1 Put them in mind to be subject to principalities and powers, to obey magistrates, to be ready to every good work, 2 To speak evil of no man, to be no brawlers, but gentle, showing all meekness unto all men. (KJV)

My Responsibility

Every person from time to time wonders about the matter of personal responsibility toward the misfortune and victims of calamity. This is a fact in many areas of our lives that we cannot ignore; this is especially true in people who have converted to Christianity. Many of those that become Christians do not know where their responsibilities lie or to whom they have responsibility (NOTE: The Christian’s responsibility is established by Scripture - Gal. 6:9-10, 9 And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not. 10 As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith. (KJV) One of the early awakenings of the new Christian is that they have responsibility to try and convert those they know to Christ. This is probably the first inclination of the new responsibility that their conversion prompts; “help someone else to understand and become a Christian too”. The new Christian feels good about their new outlook on life that this attitude is surely normal in all new converts.

This brings our thoughts to personal responsibility in other areas as well after we have been converted and began to feel our need to develop (i.e. grow – mature- etc. cf. 2 Peter 3:18, “But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.” (KJV)

The need to “do” (i.e. help, assist, encourage, relieve, etc.) for others is brought to our attention as never before; now we feel the obligation out of love for others that we did not feel so keenly before. Indeed, now we understand the love of God, we need to exercise our new relationship to God in Christ by our own volunteer actions of benevolence toward others.

We look round about our place in life and observe the many people starving in other far-away-places; we see the horror of earthquakes, floods, volcanoes, hurricanes, tornadoes, poverty, war, terrorism, and other miseries upon so many in the world. We see so much that perhaps did not attract our attention before we became a Christian and we do not know how or what our responsibility to these calamities upon humanity is. We find that we are to be imitators of the divine nature (i.e. is Christ like) cf., 2 Peter 1:4, “Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.”(KJV) We realize that we have limited income, that our family needs to be taken care of, that the congregation where we have placed our membership needs our weekly contribution to perform its work and maintain the work load and we must pay our medical, taxes and other expenses – so; how can we help or relieve all this suffering that is going on continually throughout the whole world. What part of all this am I obligated to support, consider, pray about, or contribute to?

How to determine our responsibility to other situations around us and around the world is not that difficult to determine if we will understand our boundaries and our limitations as a person. I believe that there are at least three factors that we need to consider when we are given an opportunity to aid, assist, or support a good and worthy cause.

1.         We must know about the problem – This is absolutely necessary to a person’s participation in any action. If one does not know of the problem or need one is not obligated to participate – they cannot because they do not know about is.

2.         We must have the ability - if we know about the problem of another person or need of another person but do not have what they need or have no way of providing what they need we cannot help. In such a situation we may desire to help but if there is no source of that which they need at our disposable we cannot.

3.         We must have the opportunity – be in a position where we can perform the needed service for the one that needs benevolence of some kind. We may know about a need and have the ability to help but without opportunity we cannot perform the need. Perhaps the problem is far away in another hemisphere where there is a military or political hindrance; where we cannot go or cannot send; surely we are not responsible for these situations. Indeed, there are places where we cannot go or cannot depend upon aid or assistance reaching those that need it for the inhuman actions of those in power at such places –

Consider This:

Gal. 6:9-10 and James 1:27 for guideline to responsibility – “as ye have opportunity”

Dear new Christian; consider my thoughts here and consider all the possibilities throughout the world and then consider that you are one person, Yes, a Christian but we all have limitations regardless of how large a heart felt need may be to help others; may God bless your good heart to imitate Christ.

Remember these references:

Gal. 6:10, As we have therefore opportunity , let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith. (KJV)

Phil. 4:10-11, 10 But I rejoiced in the Lord greatly, that now at the last your care of me hath flourished again; wherein ye were also careful, but ye lacked opportunity .

11 Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content. (KJV)

Heb. 11:15-16, 15 and truly, if they had been mindful of that country from whence they came out, they might have had opportunity to have returned. 16 but now they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly: wherefore God is not ashamed to be called their God: for he hath prepared for them a city. (KJV)

Gospel Sermon

"HARD" PREACHING”

TEXT:

John 6:60-69,

60      Many therefore of his disciples, when they heard (this), said, This is a hard saying; who can hear it?

61      But Jesus knowing in himself that his disciples murmured at this, said unto them, Doth this cause you to stumble?

62      (What) then if ye should behold the Son of man ascending where he was before?

63      It is the spirit that giveth life; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I have spoken unto you are spirit, and are life.

64      But there are some of you that believe not. For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were that believed not, and who it was that should betray him.

65      And he said, For this cause have I said unto you, that no man can come unto me, except it be given unto him of the Father.

66      Upon this many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him.

67      Jesus said therefore unto the twelve, Would ye also go away?

68     Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life.

69      And we have believed and know that thou art the Holy One of God. ASV

INTRODUCTION:

Many disciples viewed Jesus' teaching as hard: "Harsh, rough, stiff...of

things: violent, rough, offensive, intolerable" (Thayer).

I.         THE PURPOSE OF GOSPEL PREACHING IS TO SAVE THOSE WHO BELIEVE:

Mark 16:15,

"And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to the whole creation." ASV

1 Corinthians 1:21,

"For seeing that in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom knew not God, it was God's good pleasure through the foolishness of the preaching to save them that believe." ASV

1 Timothy 4:16,

"Take heed to thyself, and to thy teaching. Continue in these things; for in doing this thou shall save both thyself and them that hear thee."

II.      WHAT TYPES OF PREACHING ARE CONSIDERED HARD (Offensive) BY UNBELIEVERS?

          A.      Preaching Which Calls for Definite Action Offends Many Weak Christians;

John 6:53,

"Jesus therefore said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink his blood, ye have not life in yourselves."

John 6:57,

"As the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father; so he that eateth me, he also shall live because of me." ASV

John 6:66,

"Upon this many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him."

Matthew 13:20-21,

20      And he that was sown upon the rocky places, this is he that heareth the word, and straightway with joy receiveth it;

21      yet hath he not root in himself, but endureth for a while; and when tribulation or persecution ariseth because of the word, straightway he stumbleth. ASV

          B.       Preaching That Openly Rebukes Sin and Error Offends Many

 Of Christ’s disciples:

Acts 7:51-53,

“51 Ye stiffnecked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, ye do always resist the Holy Spirit: as your fathers did, so do ye.

52 Which of the prophets did not your fathers persecute? and they killed them that showed before of the coming of the Righteous One; of whom ye have now become betrayers and murderers;

53 ye who received the law as it was ordained by angels, and kept it not.”

Acts 7:57-58

“57 But they cried out with a loud voice, and stopped their ears, and rushed upon him with one accord;

58 and they cast him out of the city, and stoned him: and the witnesses laid down their garments at the feet of a young man named Saul.” ASV

C.      On The Other Hand, Many View Preaching Which Makes Us Comfortable As "Positive" In Nature:

Jeremiah 6:14,

“14 They have healed also the hurt of my people slightly, saying, Peace, peace; when there is no peace.” ASV

2 Timothy 4:3-4,

“3 For the time will come when they will not endure the sound doctrine; but, having itching ears, will heap to themselves teachers after heir own lusts;

4 and will turn away their ears from the truth, and turn aside unto fables.”

II.               GOSPEL MUST BE PREACHED EVEN WHEN PEOPLE ARE OFFENDED:

2 Timothy 4:1-5,

“1 I charge (thee) in the sight of God, and of Christ Jesus, who shall judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and his kingdom:

2 preach the word; be urgent in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching

3 For the time will come when they will not endure the sound doctrine; but, having itching ears, will heap to themselves teachers after their own lusts;

4 and will turn away their ears from the truth, and turn aside unto fables.

5 But be thou sober in all things, suffer hardship, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill thy ministry.” ASV

A.              Our Charge before God On Preaching The Word Is To:

·        Reprove,

·        Rebuke,

·        Exhort,

2 Timothy 2:24-26,

“24 And the Lord's servant must not strive, but be gentle towards all, apt to teach, forbearing,

25 in meekness correcting them that oppose themselves; if peradventure God may give them repentance unto the knowledge of the truth,

26 and they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, having been taken captive by him unto his will.ASV

B.            Some Will Accept Gospel Teaching and Others Will Not

Proverbs 9:7-10,

7 He that correcteth a scoffer getteth to himself reviling; And he that reproveth a wicked man (getteth) himself a blot.

8 Reprove not a scoffer, lest he hate thee: Reprove a wise man, and he will love thee.

9 Give (instruction) to a wise man, and he will be yet wiser: Teach a righteous man, and he will increase in learning.

10 The fear of Jehovah is the beginning of wisdom; And the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.” ASV

C.           Some Attack The Teacher When He Teaches The Word,

Galatians 4:16,

“So then am I become your enemy, by telling you the truth?” ASV

2 Corinthians 12:14-19,

“14 Behold, this is the third time I am ready to come to you; and I will not be a burden to you: for I seek not yours, but you: for the children ought not to   lay up for the parents, but the parents for the children.

15 And I will most gladly spend and be spent for your souls. If I love you more abundantly, am I loved the less?

16 But be it so, I did not myself burden you; but, being crafty, I caught you with guile.

17 Did I take advantage of you by any one of them whom I have sent unto you?

18 I exhorted Titus, and I sent the brother with him. Did Titus take any advantage of you? walked we not in the same spirit? (walked we) not in the same steps?

19 Ye think all this time that we are excusing ourselves unto you. In the sight   of God speak we in Christ. But all things, beloved, (are) for your edifying.”

IV.    GOD'S DIRECTIVES ON PREACHING THE TRUTH:

A.              To Preachers and Teachers: Preach Truth Regardless Of Reception

2 Timothy 4:2,

2 preach the word; be urgent in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching.” ASV

Jeremiah 20:7-11,

“7 O Jehovah, thou hast persuaded me, and I was persuaded; thou art stronger than I, and hast prevailed: I am become a laughing-stock all the day, every one mocketh me.

8 For as often as I speak, I cry out; I cry, Violence and destruction! because the word of Jehovah is made a reproach unto me, and a derision, all the day.

9 And if I say, I will not make mention of him, nor speak any more in his name, then there is in my heart as it were a burning fire shut up in my bones, and I am weary with forbearing, and I cannot (contain).

10 For I have heard the defaming of many, terror on every side. Denounce, and we will denounce him, (say) all my familiar friends, they that watch for my fall; peradventure he will be persuaded, and we shall prevail against him, and we shall take our revenge on him.

11 But Jehovah is with me as a mighty one (and) a terrible: therefore my persecutors shall stumble, and they shall not prevail; they shall be utterly put to shame, because they have not dealt wisely, even with an everlasting dishonor which shall never be forgotten.” ASV

Amos 7:11-13,

“11 For thus Amos saith, Jeroboam shall die by the sword, and Israel shall surely be led away captive out of his land.

12 Also Amaziah said unto Amos, O thou seer, go, flee thou away into the land of Judah, and there eat bread, and prophesy there:

13 but prophesy not again any more at Beth-el; for it is the king's sanctuary, and it is a royal house.” ASV

Ezekiel 2:5-7,

“5 And they, whether they will hear, or whether they will forbear, for they are a rebellious house,) yet shall know that there hath been a prophet among them.

6 And thou, son of man, be not afraid of them, neither be afraid of their words, though briers and thorns are with thee, and thou dost dwell among scorpions:

be not afraid of their words, nor be dismayed at their looks, though they are a rebellious house.

7 And thou shalt speak my words unto them, whether they will hear, or whether they will forbear; for they are most rebellious.”

B.            To Hearers:  Meekly Receive Truth and Obey It:

James 1:21-22,

“21 Wherefore putting away all filthiness and overflowing of wickedness, receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.

22 But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deluding your own selves.” ASV

Ezekiel 33:30-32,

“30 And as for thee, son of man, the children of thy people talk of thee by the walls and in the doors of the houses, and speak one to another, every one to his brother, saying, Come, I pray you, and hear what is the word that cometh forth from Jehovah.

31 And they come unto thee as the people cometh, and they sit before thee as my people, and they hear thy words, but do them not; for with their mouth they show much love, but their heart goeth after their gain.

32 And, lo, thou art unto them as a very lovely song of one that hath a pleasant voice, and can play well on an instrument; for they hear thy words, but they do them not.” ASV

CONCLUSION:

1.                 Always teach the "Truth"

John 8:32,

"and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." ASV

2.                 Never become intimidated by your students:

Gal 1:8-9,

8        But though we, or an angel from heaven, should preach unto you any gospel other than that which we preached unto you, let him be anathema.

9        As we have said before, so say I now again, if any man preacheth unto you any gospel other than that which ye received, let him be anathema. ASV

3.                 Do all by the authority of God:

Col 3:17,

"And whatsoever ye do, in word or in deed, (do) all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him." ASV

GUARANTEED

Salvation from sin is guaranteed by the Lord conditioned on God's grace and man's obedience. God's system for salvation from sin is clearly revealed to mankind upon the pages of the written word (i.e., the Bible), please observe the following plan that God has devised for man's salvation:

1.               Hear the gospel: Romans 10:17, "So belief (cometh) of hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ." (ASV)

2.               Believe the gospel: Mark 16:16, "He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that disbelieves shall be condemned." (ASV)

3.     Repent of sins: Acts 2:38, "And Peter (said) unto them, Repent ye, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ unto the remission of your sins; and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit." (ASV)

4.     Confess Christ as Lord: Romans 10:10, "for with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation." (ASV)

5.     Be baptized for the remission of sin: Acts 2:38, "And Peter (said) unto them, Repent ye, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ unto the remission of your sins; and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit." (ASV)

The Lord then adds you to the church: Acts 2:47, "praising God, and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to them day by day those that were saved." (ASV)           {GLC}

 QUESTION:

Garreth please give me some information about the concept as you see it regarding faith, salvation, the Bible’s theology, etc. My wife and I are interested in church and we have been attending several different ones; there are differences in nearly all of them. What is your take on all these differences and why do so many differences exist?

MORE:

Hi to both of you.  Hope all is well up your way. We are doing just fine.  Spring has finally arrived, it is warm again and the trees are all blooming! We know Ohio got another snow storm, hope it was in a different area than your home? We have a question for you; Sunday we took our friends to church with us.  On the way home they asked why the

Church had no pictures of Jesus or no crosses showing. We never thought about it much.  Is this common for Church of Christ or is it just in our church? Well bless you both and have a great day, hope to see you someday son!

Brother Clair:

Why do you teach and write about other churches as being wrong and the one you preach at is the only right one? How do you arrive at this kind of conclusion? It seems to me that there are good people in all churches; the one you preach for as well as others.

ANSWERING THE THREE QUESTIONS:

Dear friends;

I am sorry it took so long to get back to you on the question; we have been busy with local affairs. Everything is ok now.

The answer is rather lengthy but the question requires a lengthy ANSWER.

The Bible is a Book of patters that the true Christian must follow. The instructions in their context are not suggestion but are bound upon all mankind for all ages. Please take time and copy this material and spend some time reading, and studying it with your Bible. I believe you will understand that the Written Word of God [i.e. the Bible] is a Book that is from God for our salvation now and in the future, after we have passed away

APPROACHING THE INTERPRETATION OF THE BIBLE

[How are we to approach the contents of the Bible?]

Explanation by Garreth L. Clair

About Understanding God’s Dealings with Mankind

[The Question of a Divine Pattern]

A STARTING PLACE:

With regard to any subject it is necessary that we determine standards before we proceed. The concept of standards or the following of patterns is not simply a biblical philosophy, the idea of patters is important in ever major human endeavor. Whenever a plan is devised to build any new building [a house, a shopping mall, or an automobile factory the creators and planners will first prepare a pattern that is to be followed by those that build the edifice]. Whenever a new automobile comes to the showroom of our automobile dealers, the car has first been planned by its creators based on a drawn scale or blueprint. The same is true whenever we want to make a measurement of distance, we have to appeal to a rule, [i.e. a foot is 12 inches, a yard is three feet, a mile is 5280 feet, a football field is 100 Yards or 300 feet], you see, in every endeavor it is necessary to follow a pattern.

Understand this, if there is no pattern to follow in building anything or determining values of materials, distances, weights, measure, and any other quality we could not exist in the world in any orderly fashion. As we come to understand this fact about patterns, measurements, and gauges, we are better prepared to follow the Divine Pattern that our Creator has given to us.

GOD IS COMPLETELY PERFECT:

Matt 5:48, “Ye therefore shall be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.” ASV

God cannot give an imperfect pattern to mankind because HE IS PERFECT and HE HAS CREATED MAN. Since HE HAS CREATED MAN the GUIDEBOOK THAT HE HAS GIVEN MAN IS ALSO PERFECT. The Bible is perfect because God is perfect and God would not provide mankind with a guidebook that contained error or patterns that were imperfect. God has given mankind a Book to guide him through life and acquire eternal life as he understands and complies with God’s instruction. This is absolutely the truth – one cannot understand further than this if one is an atheist, agnostic, an individual that doubts the accuracy of the Bible or anyone that rejects the Bible or any part of it.

GOD HAS GIVEN MANKIND A GUIDE [A Pattern]:

The Bible is a book of Divine patterns:

CONSIDER THIS:

God gave us a pattern to rightly divide the Bible:

THE BEGINNING PATTERN:

1.    66 Books make up the Bible

2.    There is an Old Testament and a New Testament

3.    There are three primary dispensations:

Patriarchal – From Adam to the Law of Moses [Ten Commandment Law]

The Ten Commandment Law given at Mount Horab – From Law of Moses to the establishment of Christ’s church [Kingdom], Acts 2

The Christian Dispensation beginning at Acts 2

POINT: "Today we live under the Christian Dispensation.

God gave Adam and Eve a pattern to follow – Gen 2:16-17 - 16 And Jehovah God commanded the man, saying, of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat:

17 but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shall not eat of it: for in the day that thou eat thereof thou shall surely die.” ASV

God gave Noah a pattern to follow – Gen 6:8-22, “8 But Noah found favor in the eyes of Jehovah.

9 These are the generations of Noah.  Noah was a righteous man, (and) perfect in his generations: Noah walked with God.

10 And Noah begat three sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

11 And the earth was corrupt before God, and the earth was filled with violence.

12 And God saw the earth, and, behold, it was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted their way upon the earth.

13 And God said unto Noah. The end of all flesh is come before me; for the earth is filled with violence through them; and, behold, I will destroy them with the earth.

14 Make thee an ark of gopher wood; rooms shall thou make in the ark, and shall pitch it within and without with pitch.

15 And this is how thou shall make it: the length of the ark three hundred cubits, the breadth of it fifty cubits, and the height of it thirty cubits.

16 A light shall thou make to the ark, and to a cubit shall thou finish it upward; and the door of the ark shall thou set in the side thereof; with lower, second, and third stories shall thou make it.

17 And I, behold, I do bring the flood of waters upon this earth, to destroy all flesh, wherein is the breath of life, from under heaven; everything that is in the earth shall die.

18 but I will establish my covenant with thee; and thou shall come into the ark, thou, and thy sons, and thy wife, and thy sons' wives with thee.

19 And of every living thing of all flesh, two of every sort shall thou bring into the ark, to keep them alive with thee; they shall be male and female.

20 Of the birds after their kind, and of the cattle after their kind, of every creeping thing of the ground after its kind, two of every sort shall come unto thee, to keep them alive.

21 And take thou unto thee of all food that is eaten, and gather it to thee; and it shall be for food for thee, and for them.

22 Thus did Noah; according to all that God commanded him, so did he.” ASV

God gave Moses a pattern to follow –Heb 8:5, “who serve (that which is) a copy and shadow of the heavenly things, even as Moses is warned (of God) when he is about to make the tabernacle: for, See, smith he, that thou make all things according to the pattern that was showed thee in the mount.” ASV

Joshua followed the Divine Pattern - Josh 22:28, “28 Therefore said we, It shall be, when they so say to us or to our generations in time to come, that we shall say, Behold the pattern of the altar of Jehovah, which our fathers made, not for burnt-offering, nor for sacrifice; but it is a witness between us and you.” ASV

King Ahaz followed the Divine Pattern - 2 Kings 16:10, “10 And king Ahaz went to Damascus to meet Tiglath-pileser king of Assyria, and saw the altar that was at Damascus; and king Ahaz sent to Urijah the priest the fashion of the altar, and the pattern of it, according to all the workmanship thereof.” ASV

David followed the Divine Pattern – 1 Chron. 28:11-12, “11 Then David gave to Solomon his son the pattern of the porch (of the temple), and of the houses thereof, and of the treasuries thereof, and of the upper rooms thereof, and of the inner chambers thereof, and of the place of the mercy-seat; 12 and the pattern of all that he had by the Spirit, for the courts of the house of Jehovah, and for all the chambers round about, for the treasuries of the house of God, and for the treasuries of the dedicated things;” ASV

God gave a pattern to Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego – Daniel 3:1-29

Daniel followed the Divine Pattern – Daniel 6:1-28

God gave Christ a pattern to follow – Matt 11:27, “27 All things have been delivered unto me of my Father : and no one knoweth the Son, save the Father ; neither doth any know the Father , save the Son, and he to whomsoever the Son willeth to reveal (him.).” Luke 2:49-50, “49 and he said unto them, how is it that ye sought me? Knew ye not that I must be in my Father's house?

50 And they understood not the saying which he spoke unto them.” ASV

Heb 5:8-9, “8 though he was a Son, yet learned obedience by the things which he suffered; 9 and having been made perfect, he became unto all them that obey him the author of eternal salvation;”  ASV

Christ gave his apostles a pattern to follow – John 1:17, “For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.” ASV

John 8:32, “and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” ASV

John 16:13, “Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he shall guide you into all the truth. For he shall not speak from himself; but what things so-ever he shall hear, (these) shall he speak: and he shall declare unto you the things that are to come.” ASV

John 17:17, “Sanctify them in the truth; thy word is truth.” ASV

Paul Instructed Timothy to follow the pattern - 2 Tim 1:13, “Hold the pattern of sound words which thou hast heard from me, in faith and love which is in Christ Jesus.”

Christ gave the church a pattern to follow – Matt 28:18-20, “18 And Jesus came to them and spoke unto them, saying, all authority hath been given unto me in heaven and on earth.

19 Go ye therefore, and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them into the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit:

20 teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I commanded you: and lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world.” ASV

Composed of members – all have followed the same pattern to become Christians:

They have heard [or have learned] the truth – Rom 10:13-17, “13 for, whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.

14 How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in him whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher?

15 and how shall they preach, except they be sent? Even as it is written, how beautiful are the feet of them that bring glad tidings of good things!

16 But they did not all hearken to the glad tidings. For Isaiah saith, Lord, who hath believed our report?

17 So belief (cometh) of hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ.” ASV

They have believed the gospel – Mark 16:15-16, “15 and he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to the whole creation.

16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that disbelieveth shall be condemned.” ASV

They have repented of sins – Acts 2:37-38, “37 now when they heard (this,) they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and the rest of the apostles, Brethren, what shall we do?

38 And Peter (said) unto them, Repent ye, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ unto the remission of your sins; and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” ASV

They have confessed Christ with the mouth – Rom 10:9-10, “9 because if thou shall confess with thy mouth Jesus (as) Lord, and shall believe in thy heart that God raised him from the dead, thou shall be saved:

10 for with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.” ASV

They have been baptized for remission of sins – Acts 2:38, “38 And Peter (said) unto them, Repent ye, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ unto the remission of your sins; and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” ASV

1 Peter 3:21, “21 which also after a true likeness doth now save you, (even) baptism, not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the interrogation of a good conscience toward God, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ;” ASV

NOTE:

The above plan of salvation is a pattern from God’s revelation to all mankind so that man may be saved from sin – no person will be saved from sin unless this Divine Plan is followed. Everyone that is saved from sin follows the same plan and receives the same results [i.e. “salvation from sin”].

They have been added to the church by Christ – Acts 2:47, “47 praising God, and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to them day by day those that were saved.” ASV

Composed of men and women of all nations, all have followed the same pattern –

Matt 28:18-20, 18 And Jesus came to them and spoke unto them, saying, all authority hath been given unto me in heaven and on earth.

19 Go ye therefore, and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them into the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit:

20 teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I commanded you: and lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world.” ASV

Acts 20:21, “21 Testifying both to the Jews, and also to the Greeks, repentance toward God, and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ.” KJV

Rom 3:29, 29 or is God (the God) of Jews only? Is he not (the God) of Gentiles also? Yea, of Gentiles also:” ASV

Composed of pattern worship – “In spirit and in truth” – John 4:24

Assemble - Heb 10:24-25, “24 and let us consider one another to provoke unto love and good works; 25 not forsaking our own assembling together, as the custom of some is, but exhorting (one another); and so much the more, as ye see the day drawing nigh.”

Pray - 1 Thess. 5:17, “pray without ceasing;” ASV

1 Tim 2:8, “I desire therefore that the men pray in every place, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and disputing.” ASV

Acts 12:5, “Peter therefore was kept in the prison: but prayer was made earnestly of the church unto God for him.” ASV

Teach/Preach - Acts 20:7, “7 and upon the first day of the week, when we were gathered together to break bread, Paul discoursed with them, intending to depart on the morrow; and prolonged his speech until midnight.ASV

Lord’s Supper - 1 Cor. 11:23-29,

“23 for I received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, that the Lord Jesus in the night in which he was betrayed took bread;

24 and when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, this is my body, which is for you: this do in remembrance of me.

25 In like manner also the cup, after supper, saying, This cup is the new covenant in my blood: this do, as often as ye drink (it), in remembrance of me.

26 for as often as ye eat this bread, and drink the cup, ye proclaim the Lord's death till he come.

27 Wherefore whosoever shall eat the bread or drink the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner, shall be guilty of the body and the blood of the Lord.

28 but let a man prove himself, and so let him eat of the bread, and drink of the cup.

29 For he that eateth and drinketh, eateth and drinketh judgment unto himself, if he discern not the body.” ASV

Contribution into a common treasure - 1 Cor 16:1-2,

“1 Now concerning the collection for the saints, as I gave order to the churches of Galatia, so also do ye.

2 Upon the first day of the week let each one of you lay by him in store, as he may prosper, that no collections be made when I come.” ASV

Sing --- without mechanical music – Heb 2:12, “saying, I will declare thy name unto my brethren; In the midst of the congregation will I sing thy praise.”

1 Cor 14:15, “What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also.” ASV

THE BIBLE IS TO BE CORRECTLY HANDLED:

2 Tim 2:15, “15 Give diligence to present thyself approved unto God, a workman that needed not to be ashamed, handling aright the word of truth.” ASV

THE BIBLE IS GOD’S INSTRUCTION BOOK FOR MANKIND:

There is no reason to go elsewhere for information about God or how to live acceptable to God.

2 Peter 1:3, “seeing that his divine power hath granted unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that called us by his own glory and virtue;” ASV

2 Tim 3:16-17, “Every scripture inspired of God (is) also profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for instruction which is in righteousness.

17 That the man of God may be complete, furnished completely unto every good work.”

WE WALK BY FAITH - 2 Cor 5:6-9, “6 Being therefore always of good courage, and knowing that, whilst we are at home in the body, we are absent from the Lord

7 (for we walk by faith, not by sight);

8 we are of good courage, I say, and are willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be at home with the Lord.

9 Wherefore also we make it our aim, whether at home or absent, to be well-pleasing unto him.” ASV

NOTE:

The “faith” in Jude 3 is the system of truth:

Walking by faith means that we live out our lives according to God’s pattern - Jude 3, “3 Beloved, while I was giving all diligence to write unto you of our common salvation, I was constrained to write unto you exhorting you to contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all delivered unto the saints.”

THE BIBLE IS THE PATTERN:

CONSIDER THIS:

The individual, who for whatever reason decides to resist the teaching of the Bible will not become a Christian, The person with a disposition to dispute the teaching of the Bible or any part of it will not come to Christ on God’s terms, but will be as the Pharisees and Sadducees of Christ day, “will become a blind leader” who will attempt to lead others but will lead them only to his/her own philosophy. Whenever one comes to God’s Book there is humble acceptance or stubborn resistance.

Those actions by Christians and those actions performed by the congregation are to be performed according to the Divine Pattern [i.e. the Written Word of God]. Indeed, the Bible is to be correctly interpreted and this action is dependant upon the actions of men with pure and holy motives. The Bible is a Book that is divided into dispensations, these dispensations consist of Patriarchal, the Law of Moses [i.e. the Ten Commandment law given to the Jews], and the Law of Christ [the Christian].

The first step to rightly dividing the Divine Pattern is to understand that mankind lives today under the Law of Christ, the other three dispensations have been taken out of the way. Since the other two dispensations have been completed, the Law of Christ is the Divine Pattern now to be followed by everyone [i.e. both Jews and Gentiles].

The Law of Christ consists of several patterns within God’s Book of instructions for mankind, they are:

Pattern for the salvation of mankind:

Salvation for the individual [i.e. the plan of salvation – a pattern]: Hearing, Believing, Repenting, Confessing Christ as Messiah, being baptized “for the remission of sins”].

The life of the individual Christian [i.e. manner of life – lifestyle]: “Faithful to the instructions that God has provided for us in the New Testament [examples: no fornication, no lies, no stealing, etc and, love one another, forgive the sinner who repents, faithful to God in all things, etc.].

Pattern for the church [congregational relationship of the Christian]

Lord’s Day worship [A Biblical Pattern]: Assembled, In Spirit and in truth, Singing, Prayer, Teaching, Lord’s Supper, Giving

SOME FINAL REQUESTS BY GARRETH

ABOUT INTERPRETATION OF SCRIPTURE

Since God is perfect, God would not give to man a book that contained error of any kind. Since the above point is true we may rightly conclude that the Bible has no error in it. Since we are God’s created beings we will follow God’s written instructions for us even when we do not understand everything about God’s wishes for us.

Whenever we study God’s Written Word, we will always seek to understand it as it has been written.

·                      We will also consider the WRITER,

·                      The TIME of writing,

·                      To WHOM THE STATEMENT OR SENTENCE IS DIRECTED,

·                      Whether the statement is a GENERAL or a SPECIFIC statement

·                      We will be honest about the conclusion that we are forced to accept.

We will also understand that expedients are used in interpreting the Bible but we will also understand that any expedient must be authorized by Scripture before it is acceptable.

There are three factors involved in an acceptable interpretation of Scripture they are:

·                      A direct command

·                      An approved apostolic example

·                      A necessary inference

We will also seek to understand FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE and we will not press prophetic language beyond its fulfillment unless the context demands a secondary application.

We will also examine parables and other figures of speech in their proper setting so that we will correctly understand God’s intention for us.

CONSIDER THE FOLLOWING FACTS ABOUT

THE DIVINE PATTERN

[I. e. Previous articles]

THE WISE PERSON

A great and wise person is that person who is lead by God’s Written Word [i.e. the Bible]. There can be no wisdom in any of us without seeking it in the proper place. Wisdom, the kind of wisdom that aids man in his life here in this world surely comes from sources that are truly reliable. Indeed, the only source of true wisdom or if I may say, the only source of absolutely dependable knowledge about life and all things that pertain to it comes from man’s Creator [i.e. God]. Without recognition of this source we cannot attain sufficient truth to be wise or to make wise choices about the problems and opportunities of life. God makes this very clear through Jeremiah the ancient prophet in Jeremiah 10:23, “O Jehovah, I know that the way of man is not in himself: it is not in man that walketh to direct his steps.” ASV

FURTHER THOUGHTS ABOUT WISDOM or BEING WISE

OF TRUE WISDOM:

God (i.e. speaking via the Bible) says that a person's choices in life will come back to trouble or to aid him/her sometime in the future - The idea of the old adage, "You will reap whatever you sow" is found to be true.Galatians 6:7-10, "7 do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap. 8 for he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption, but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life. 9 And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart. 10 Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all, especially to those who are of the household of faith" (NKJV)

WISDOM IS DEMONSTRATED

THROUGH OBEDIENCE TO GOD'S COMMANDS:

Wisdom is seen whenever a person understands the concept of obedience to God's instruction and obeys God. The person who really believes in God as the Author of the Bible will gladly demonstrate that belief (i.e. faith) in God by obeying all of God's commands that apply to him. Even if the person cannot obey God's instructions always, he/she will constantly plead with God for strength and seek greater understanding for the purpose of being pleasing to God through obedience. Please notice the following passages of Scripture from God's Book that teaches this concept:

JEREMIAH, the Old Testament Prophet of God understood this principle when he returned to Jerusalem and saw the desolate condition of the city and the fortifications, He therefore honestly sought to lead the people back to God so that God would bless them in the work of rebuilding after the seventy-years of captivity in Babylon - Daniel 9:3-5, "3 And I set my face unto the Lord God, to seek by prayer and supplication, with fasting, and sackcloth, and ashes: 4 And I prayed unto the LORD my God, and made my confession, and said, O Lord, the great and dreadful God, keeping the covenant and mercy to them that love him, and to them that keep his commandments ; 5 We have sinned, and have committed iniquity, and have done wickedly, and have rebelled, even by departing from thy precepts and from" (KJV).

SOLOMON, the wisest man of all history understood this principle of obedience too: - Ecclesiastes 12:13-14, "13 Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man. 14 For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil" (KJV).

THE APOSTLE JOHN understood this principle too: - 1 John 2:3-5, "3 and hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments. 4 He that smith, I know him, and kept not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. 5 but whoso kept his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him" (KJV).

1 John 3:22, "22 and whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight.

1 John 5:2-3, "2 by this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God, and keep his commandments. 3 for this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous" (KJV).

WE SHOULD UNDERSTAND THIS TRUTH TOO

THE IMPORTANCE OF AUTHORITY

THE CONSTITUTION:

Without the American constitution those of us who are citizens in America would not have rules to live by with regard to responsibilities and rights. The constitution gives all citizens the same rights and privileges. Since the previous sentence is true, we must make sure that we are citizens of this great country - if we want the rights and privileges we will surely find out how to be a citizen and do whatever we need to do to become one.

As citizens of America we understand that our rights and privileges are simply laws by which we live and conduct our affairs while we live here. The U.S.Constitution, although an important document to all citizens cannot guarantee our survival in this world The survival [i.e. life expectancy], of anyone of us will depend upon many things and our life may end at any time regardless of the protection under our republic form of government guaranteed by the constitution.

Yet, whether we live as model citizens or as rebellious citizens, our rights and privileges under the constitution continue to exist. Even though these conclusions are correct, our life will one day come to an end. Whenever we die we will be buried somewhere, where will be determined either before we die or after we die - perhaps by a family member.

After physical death what can the constitution, what can the government, what can the army, navy, marines, etc. do for us? "NOTHING"

After death we are either annihilated {forever gone as is a dog, or a fish} or we will live again in another circumstance {i.e. we know not what}.

Have we considered the possibility that we may live again?

IS THERE SOMETHING THAT ONE MAY DO THAT WILL HELP BEYOND THE GRAVE? “YES!” Please read

John 3:16; Acts 2:37-39; Matthew 25:14-33
