--- WELCOME ---

To The Services of the Church Of Christ

10 Reasons Why You Should Check Us Out Today!

1.     We plead for the unity of all believers in Christ, in keeping with the Savior’s prayer (John 17:20-21).

2.     We plead for undenominational Christianity, claiming to be nondenominational, we are not part of any other group or denomination; we are the body of Christ in this local area, exalting Christ as the head (Colossians 1:18).

3.     We have no creed but Christ (Acts 8:37).

4.     We believe in speaking where the Bible speaks, and being silent where the Bible is silent (1 Peter 4:11).

5.     We endeavor to restore New Testament Christianity in the present age (Galatians 1:6-9).

6.     We bind no other name but the scriptural name of Christian upon our members (Acts 11:26).

7.     We propose to convert sinners by preaching the simple gospel of Christ as preached by the apostles in the first century (1 Corinthians 2:1-5).

8.     We believe that the gospel of Christ, preached in it’s simplicity and purity, is God’s power, and power enough, to draw men to God (Romans 1:16; John 6:44-45).

9.     We strive to pattern our worship after the New Testament pattern (John 4:23-24).

10. We recognize no church organization other than that of the individual congregation, with its elders and deacons, under Christ as its Head (Colossians 1:18; Philippians 1:1; 1 Peter 5:1-4).

The Church Is Not…

… composed of people who think they are better than others, but rather those who realize that they should be better than they are, and must continually strive to do better (Philippians 3:12-14).

… composed of perfect people, but rather those who realize that they are following a perfect Lord, who revealed a perfect Plan, in a perfect Book (James 1:21-25).

… Composed of people who never sin, but rather forgiven sinners, who acknowledge their faults and forsake them (Proverbs 28:13).

… Trying to withdraw from everyone, but is rather, trying to draw everyone into the fellowship of Christ, by walking in the light of Jesus (John 12:32; Mark 16:15-16).

… Trying to set up arbitrary rules to hinder anyone, but is rather, trying to show the rule of Christ which benefits everyone (Galatians 6:2; 1 John 3:16-18).

… Trying to take the joy out of your life, but is rather, trying to instill the beauty of holiness and true joy in you life (2 Chronicles 20:21; Philippians 4:4; 1 Peter 1:8).

… Trying to separate you from your money, but is rather, trying to keep your money from separating you from God (Matthew 6:19-21; Luke 12:13-21).

… Trying to rob you of your time, but is rather, trying to get you to put the priorities of your life in proper order, so that you can enjoy eternity (Matt. 6:33) -                           selected from WEB

HAVE YOU THOUGHT ABOUT YOUR SOUL?

Have you ever stopped to wonder?

What life is all about?

Why you’re here, and where you’re going,

When your lease on time runs out?

Maybe you’ve been far too busy,

Trying hard to reach your goal;

Would you let me ask you kindly?

Have you thought about your soul?

You may reach the highest portals,

And your dreams may all come true;

Wealth and fame may be your portion,

And success may shine on you

All your friends may sing your praises,

Not a care on you may roll;

But what about the ”great tomorrow“—

Have you thought about your soul?

Don’t forget your days are numbered,

Though you may be riding’ high;

But like all us poor mortals,

Some day you’ll up and die.

Your success, and fame, and glory,

Won’t be worth the bell they toll;

Let me ask you just one question,

Have you thought about your soul?

If you’ve never thought it over,

Spend a little time today;

There is nothing more important

That will ever come your way,

Than the joys of sins forgiven,

And to know you’ve been made whole;

In the name of Christ, the Savior,

Have you thought about your soul?

Believe and obey Him today --- Thank-you, for sharing your time with us!

MISSED & IGNORED OPPORTUNITIES

One of the great failings of many Christians is their failure to react correctly whenever an opportunity to teach God’s message is presented to them. It is not an unusual event to ignore opportunities to teach another person; actually many of us do not realize when an opportunity comes our way to teach another person. Opportunities to teach others are often neglected because we do not understand what an opportunity is.

Many opportunities to teach others are nearer than we realize. Did you ever consider your husband, wife, children, in-laws, relatives, and neighbors as possible opportunities to instruct them about your religious beliefs versus their non-religious connection? Indeed, many times our opportunities escape us because they are so near to us. We must awake to opportunities that are ours because those unnoticed and neglected people in our lives need the gospel as much as those that we read about in foreign countries.

The New Testament is full of instruction and examples for us regarding possible missed or overlooked opportunities to convert a lost one. Some of those examples follow;

1 Tim. 4:6-11 - 6 if thou put the brethren in remembrance of these things, thou shall be a good minister of Jesus Christ, nourished up in the words of faith and of good doctrine, whereunto thou hast attained. 7 But refuse profane and old wives' fables, and exercise thyself rather unto godliness. 8 For bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come. 9 This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptation. 10 For therefore we both labor and suffer reproach, because we trust in the living God, who is the Savior of all men, specially of those that believe. 11 These things command and teach. KJV

1 Tim. 6:1-3 - 1 Let as many servants as are under the yoke count their own masters worthy of all honor, that the name of God and his doctrine be not blasphemed. 2 And they that have believing masters, let them not despise them, because they are brethren; but rather do them service, because they are faithful and beloved, partakers of the benefit. These things teach and exhort. 3 If any man teach otherwise, and consent not to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness; KJV

2 Tim. 2:24-26 - 24 And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient, 25 In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth; 26 And that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will.

Titus 2:3-4 - 3 The aged women likewise, that they be in behavior as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things; 4 That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children, KJV

Heb. 5:12-14 - 12 For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat. 13 For every one that useth milk is unskillful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe. 14 but strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil. KJV

2 Timothy 2:2 – 2 and the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also. KJV

SEE YOU NEXT MONTH – ”Lord Willing.“

Changes in Congregation Practice

And

Changes in Individual Christian’s Position

Today we find that in many congregations the pure gospel is lacking. This condition exist because some congregations that were faithful 50 years ago have since gone through changes that have placed them in a situation with the Lord where Jesus might say – ”You have left your first love“ or ”I have a few things against you“ (cf. Rev. 2:4; 2:14).

The forces of evil never rest; the truths that were defended in the 30s through the 80s are still truth. Yet; many church members today have changed their views about marriage-divorce-and-remarriage, about the function of the congregation with its resources, about the work of the church in evangelism (i.e. some today are advocating that institutions other than the local congregation may set up brotherhood projects that have been assigned to the church alone); these departures violate the clear instruction via the Holy Scriptures that teach the congregation is God’s missionary society; nothing else is authorized by God as an agency to spread the gospel. Indeed, the individual Christian also has responsibilities to spread the gospel as is clearly taught by the Holy Scriptures, cf. Acts 8:1-4 - 1 And Saul was consenting unto his death. And at that time there was a great persecution against the church which was at Jerusalem; and they were all scattered abroad throughout the regions of Judaea and Samaria, except the apostles. 2 And devout men carried Stephen to his burial, and made great lamentation over him. 3 as for Saul, he made havoc of the church, entering into every house, and haling men and women committed them to prison. 4 Therefore they that were scattered abroad went every where preaching the word. KJV

2 Timothy 2:2 - And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also. KJV

Brethren; friends; I am concerned about the changes that are being introduced into some churches and the direction of some of the good brethren who in the past were staunch advocates of COMMAND, APOSTOLIC EXAMPLE, and NECESSARY INFERENCE. Some of the faithful men of the past, if possible, would arise to condemn these changes; good men that we can recall by name.

What does the future hold? Perhaps we can know what the future holds by looking at the church and what has happened in the past 110 years. There have been continued departures by those determined to make changes in the Bible method of doing things in the congregation. Indeed, some have allowed the grand schemes of TV evangelist, and on-the-march brethren who are dissatisfied with the ancient truths to pursue error without taking a stand. May God bless each one of us to see the hand-writing on the wall for the future generations and cry out before another major division in the Body of Christ takes place!

God’s Plan for Church Finance

Men have suggested and initiated many different ways and as many schemes to raise money in the name of Jesus Christ

BUT;

The Bible teaches us God’s way [i.e. God’s instructions] for the church to raise money.

… Our study today will deal with this matter …

GOD’S REVEALED PLAN

1 Cor. 16:1-2

1 Now concerning the collection for the saints, as I have given orders to the churches of Galatia, so you must do also:

2 on the first day of the week let each one of you lay something aside, storing up as he may prosper, that there be no collections when I come.

FROM 1 Cor.16:1-2 WE LEARN THAT GIVING IS TO BE …

PERIODICALLY – ”Upon the first day“ --- Every week has a first day; therefore giving is to be habitual.

PERSONAL – ”Let every one of you“. Every Christian

PROVIDENTIAL – ”Lay by him in store“ deliberately, thoughtful, into the church treasury.

PROPORTIONATE – ”As God has prospered him.“ – It is acceptable as a man hath and not as he hath not“ [2 Cor. 8:12].

PREVENTATIVE – ”That there be no gatherings when I come.“

2 Cor. 9:6-8

6 but this I say, He which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully.

7 Every man according as he purposed in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loves’ a cheerful giver.

8 And God is able to make all grace abound toward you; that ye, always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work: KJV

BOUNTIFUL – ”He that soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully“. – Nothing is further from ”imitating“ Christ who gave himself for us than stinginess and covetousness.

PURPOSEFUL – ”Let each person do according as they hath purposed in their heart.“ Thoughtful, pre determined, intelligently, not accidently but systematically

PLEASANTLY – ”Not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver: Such giving is peculiarly pleasing to God – the freewill offering of a willing heart.

CONFIDENTLY – ”And God is able to make all grace abound unto you …“

Matt. 6:33

But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. KJV The person who believes God’s promises   can give liberally without any fear of being hurt by so doing.

MEASURE OF GIVING

The amount a Christian ought to give is not stated.

The possible attitude of God toward the amount that a Christian ought to give may be determined in part by looking to the pattern of giving under the Law of Moses.

Indeed; each Christian must determine what to give from the heart.

WHY SHOULD THE CHRISTIAN GIVE?

Because God commands it – 1 Cor. 16:1-2

Cheerful giving is pleasing to God – 2 Cor. 9:7

Because of God’s blessings

Because God has two laws:

1-REAP WHAT YOU SOW – Gal. 6:7 - Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. KJV

2-REAP IN PROPORTION TO THAT SOWN - 2 Cor. 9:6 - But this I say, He which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully. KJV

THE CHRISTIAN CANNOT AFFORD THE CONSEQUENCE OF NOT GIVING

Without adequate funds in the treasury;

1-The congregation is robbed of progress.

2-Some who are lost in sin are slighted because there are no funds to aid in conversion.

3-They rob themselves of the blessings of giving - Acts 20:35 - I have showed you all things, how that so laboring ye ought to support the weak, and to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he said, It is more blessed to give than to receive. KJV

4-God is robbed and the result to that one who does not give is disastrous –

WILL A MAN ROB GOD?

Malachi 3:8-10

8 Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me. But ye say; wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and offerings

9 Ye are cursed with a curse: for ye have robbed me, even this whole nation.

10 Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the LORD of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.

GO; BRING IN THE LOST

                     [The un-churched – The backsliders –                   Those in a false religion]

Consider This:

Please read the Bible references listed as you study the following article.

INTRODUCTION:

Today there are many people who need to be Christians; these people fall into at least three groups. The heading of this article defines the three groups that I want to examine in the study today.  Those of us who consider ourselves the peculiar people of God (cf. – Titus 2:14 - 14 Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works. KJV --- 1 Peter 2:9-10 - 9 But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should show forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvelous light: 10 Which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy. KJV) - have an obligation to these people to make every effort to convert them to Jesus Christ. Whenever these are converted to Christ they will become members of the church of Christ – cf. Romans 16:16.

OBSTACLES ABOUND TO SUCCESS:

Anywhere one seeks information today regarding the things of God [i.e. the Bible, origin of man, man’s purpose here on earth, heaven and hell] they will be faced with a mountain of misinformation. This misinformation comes from evolutionis, and all segments of society that seek human gratification without restraint and from those that refuse to acknowledge God’s existence – cf. Romans 1:18-2:5

WE MUST PROCEED AGAINST ALL ODDS:

The true Christian will seek continually to convert the lost regardless of the obstacles that are placed in their way by the forces of evil. There is no second chance for those that are lost; if they die before conversion to Christ their eternal state is sealed; cf. 1 Peter 4:17-18 - 17 For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God:  and if it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God? 18 And if the righteous scarcely be saved, where shall the ungodly and the sinner appear? KJV

DIRECT ADMONITIONS TO THE INDIVIDUAL CHRISTIAN:

2 Tim 2:2 - And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also. KJV

Acts 3:19 - Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord; KJV

1 Peter 1:22-23 - 22 Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently: 23 Being born again , not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever. KJV

1 Tim 2:4 - Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.

Gal 6:1-5 - Bear and Share the Burdens Brethren, if a man is overtaken in any trespass, you who are spiritual restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness, considering yourself lest you also be tempted.  2 Bear one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.  3 For if anyone thinks himself to be something, when he is nothing, he deceives himself.  4 But let each one examine his own work, and then he will have rejoicing in himself alone, and not in another.

5 For each one shall bear his own load.  NKJV

POSSIBLE RESULTS:

1-Whenever Christians work to restore and convert the lost in their community often the congregation will began to grow numerically. Of course numbers are not the objective for working with the lost ones but it is one visible result.

2-The membership of the congregation will grow spiritually through exercising their abilities in personal evangelism.

3-The congregation will visibly become a beacon to others in the area where they meet. Each congregation ought to be a light in the world of sin and shine brightly for God and the characteristics of the individual Christian that are a part of it. - glclair@aol.com - April 30, 2010

CONSIDER THIS:

All good things come from God! The problems of life that we each must face are common to all men therefore let us deal with them wisely – 1 Cor. 10:13-15.

”I Go Just For Fun“

I recently had a conversation online with a friend from high school that I had not talked to in about 6 years. We discussed how each other’s lives were going and then we got on the subject of church, as I told him I was now a gospel preacher. I asked him where he went to church in which he replied that he did not go to church at the present, but wanted to go back to the church where he grew up. I knew that it was a community church where a lot of young people went to when we were in high school. It had all the bells and whistles, including a rock band on a stage, a surround sound system, snacks and hot chocolate in the foyer, and even a t-shirt stand as you walk in. Now when I knew this friend back in high school, he was not really the spiritual kind, so I proposed the question to him that while going to this church, ”Do you learn a lot about the Bible? Or do you mostly just go for fun?“ His response was, ”I mostly just go for fun.“

He would further go on to say that the reason he liked going to this church was the atmosphere and how everything was real laid back. Now this response did not surprise me, as this is very typical of folks who go to church nowadays, especially the young people, but it did make me think. The fact of the matter is this is a prime example that most people have no clue what church is and the purpose of why it exists.

Most people when they hear the word church think of the Bible, and rightly so. Without the Bible, the word church really might not be known. The term means in its original usage, a called out body, Stephen used the phrase in this way when he was giving his defense before the Jews. ”This is he who was in the church in the wilderness with the Angel who spoke to him on Mount Sinai …“ (Acts 7:38). The church was the called out body of Israel. God had called them out of Egyptian bondage and led them to a land that He promised give them. So Stephen rightly uses this word church in its ordinary sense. Paul would use the word in its special sense, the way most of us know it as today. In Ephesians 1:22-23, he writes, ”And He put all things under His feet, and gave Him to be head over all things to the church, which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all.“ Paul is describing the called out body who have obeyed the gospel and have had their sins washed away. Those apart of this body have been ”called out“ of sin, so therefore they are members of His church. It is in this way that the Bible defines what the church is. It is a called out body of people who are under the authority of Christ to His will, since he is the head of the church.

The reason for going through all that was to show the true meaning of going to worship God as a collective church. Christ being our head means we are under His authority, and when we are His authority, we must do what He says. If He does not tell us to do something, we don’t do it. So; all things that we do in the church must first come from Jesus’ teaching, that is, the Bible’s teaching.

Sadly though that is not what we are seeing in the ”churches“ that meet in the name of the Lord every Sunday. They have been turned into places to go to have fun, to kick back and relax, and to listen to all sorts of feel good type stuff. This is what is known as the social gospel. Churches offer all sorts of entertainment to get people, (especially the young people) into the congregation, and then teach them a few things about Jesus. People start getting this mindset of the church, and before you know it people like my friend are going there just to have fun, thinking nothing of the Bible or Jesus at all! Friends, places like these have taken Jesus out of the picture all together. The only way to convert and save the lost is through the word of God (Romans 10:17). No other way will do, you are not going to get to heaven by having perfect attendance at your youth rallies, or how active you are in the rock band on stage.

Jesus taught of people who have this mindset. He said in John 6:26, ”Most assuredly I say to you, you seek Me, not because you not because you saw signs, but because you ate of the loaves and were filled.“ The people’s error was not in following Jesus, but why they were following Him, He provided them food, they wanted more. It was not the miracle He worked they were impressed with, but the food. So He corrects them and says in the next verse, ”Do not labor for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to everlasting life, which the Son of Man will give you, because God the Father has set His seal on Him.“

Why do you go to church? Do you go just for fun, or to have a good time? Do you go to listen to the good music, but half heartedly listen to the teaching of the scriptures? The Bible teaches us that when we go to worship, we ought to have a reverence before God. Hebrews 12:28 says, ”Therefore since we are receiving a kingdom which cannot be shaken, let us have grace, by which we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear.“ Our Lord warns us about doing things that we don’t have authority for, and that just because we do it in the name of Jesus, does not mean it has the authority of Jesus. Sadly, many are going to learn this lesson too late on judgment day: ”Not everyone who says to Me, Lord, Lord, shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven. Many will say to Me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in your name, cast out demons in your name, and done many wonders in your name? And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you, depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!’”

Lawlessness is sin (1 John 3:4). – Scott Vanderwood

THANK GOD FOR EACH NEW DAY

Most people do not stop and consider the days of their lives in a very serious fashion. Many people just live for today without giving consideration for the past and the future. In the past few years, it has finally dawned on me that my life is still viable here in this world because God has blessed me. God has blessed me to understand that life is not a succession of ups and downs with no real meaning. I remember about 1957 or 58 that it occurred to me that perhaps my father and grandfather knew more about living than I did. I understood that it is not in man that walks on earth to direct his own steps (Jeremiah 10:23). This awakening brought back to me that in my youth I had attended services of the church of Christ with dad and grandpa in Lothair, KY. This caused me to consider for several days and perhaps a few weeks that it was time that I got my life settled so that I could live with some dignity in society.

Since that time 50 + years have passed and I am still pursuing the promises of God and His Son; Jesus Christ …

HAVE YOU READ THESE SCRIPTURES RECENTLY?

NOTE:

Matt. 11:28-30 - 28 Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

Matt. 16:24-26 - 24 Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. 25 For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it. 26 For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?

John 5:24-29 - 24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life. 25 Verily, verily, I say unto you, the hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear shall live. 26 for as the Father hath life in himself; so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself; 27 and hath given him authority to execute judgment also, because he is the Son of man. 28 Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice, 29 And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation. KJV

As we [i.e. Barbara and me] contemplate the future; we will surely continue to do the work for God as much as we are able and capable of doing. There are days when we sit and discuss the past for joy and for strength to pursue tomorrow, While we are still here we will heed the Lord’s statement in – cf. John 9:4, ”I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh , when no man can work.“ (KJV)  Only God knows what will transpire tomorrow yet we are set for the defense of the gospel of Jesus Christ with our whole heart; as the apostle Paul so clearly put it in – cf. Phil. 1:15-17 - 15 Some indeed preach Christ even of envy and strife; and some also of good will: 16 The one preach Christ of contention, not sincerely, supposing to add affliction to my bonds: 17 But the other of love, knowing that I am set for the defense of the gospel.

WILL WE LIVE OUR LIVES WITH PURPOSE?

The days, weeks, months, and years that lay behind us are testimony to our faithfulness and dedication to God and the future will continue to determine in the mind of God whether or not we have successfully traveled the ”narrow path“ – cf. Matt. 7:13-14 - 13 Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: 14 Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it. KJV

My dear friends and brethren as Moses said to his father-in-law many centuries ago – cf. Num. 10:29 - 29 And Moses said unto Hobab, the son of Raguel the Midianite, Moses' father in law , We are journeying unto the place of which the LORD said, I will give it you: come thou with us, and we will do thee good: for the LORD hath spoken good concerning Israel. LIVING AS THOUGH THERE IS NO TOMORROW

{STOP! reconsider your future}

            There are many people who are familiar with the Bible and with the word church in the general sense. The ability to understand that the Bible is from God is the first sign of hope for the individual who has not pursued the Bible or has been neutral with regard to its content or the author’s intention for providing it for man. The lifestyle of many people is so full of spontaneous action in pursuit of work, fun, sensual enjoyment, entertainment, and personal gratification that they have not paused long enough to grasp the relevance of true religion and its ingredients. Indeed; many people have pursued all that life has to offer with great zeal and gave little concern for personal health, morality, sexual purity, their family, relatives, etc. When suddenly they look in the mirror and see a 40 something year old stranger; sudden shock hits them as they say under the sound of their voice; ”wow“ I don’t know where the years have gone: I do not remember much of the past but I know that I must pull myself together and accomplish something meaningful in life. Yes, his life is half over and he has nothing to show for it and has no viable prospects for the future.

            Surely this is a time to consider the future and try to put their life together in a meaningful way. This desire may be accomplished but there must be changes in the personal desires, expectations, and attitude toward themselves, other people, and toward their Creator. The changes will include a new awareness of their health, their physical condition; and at the same time consciousness of their desire for a new and better life. This will be the time for looking to their Creator – GOD. Indeed; God can help any person regardless of how far from God and reality that they have traveled if they will seek him. Note the instruction the apostle Paul stated to the philosophers and idolaters in Athens 2,000 years ago; Acts 17:23-31 - 23 For as I passed by, and beheld your devotions, I found an altar with this inscription, TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Whom therefore ye ignorantly worship, him declare I unto you. 24 God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands ; 25 Neither is worshipped with men's hands , as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things; 26 And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation; 27 That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us: 28 For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring. 29 Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and man's device. 30 And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent:31 Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead. KJV

SPECIAL STUDY FOURTH SUNDAY

Each fourth Sunday morning Bible Study will be devoted to

”Obligations and Methods of Personal Evangelism“

=====================================

THIS WORLD IS NOT OUR HOME!

            It is somewhat startling to observe the lengths some people will go to acquire something of a material nature that will only endure for just a little while. Many people purchase a nice home and it becomes a burden to them as they continually pay and repair the home. Indeed, we must all live somewhere and it is wise to purchase a home if possible. Yet, many times we get in too deep by purchasing a home that is more than we can afford. Many people have lost their home because they could not pay for it; there are many others who have walked away from their home because they owed more on the home than the house was worth. Yes, many people have been deceived or ”have bitten-off more than they could chew“ as the old saying goes. Now, I am not criticizing the desire to own a home, I am criticizing the person who does not count the cost before they enter into a financial arrangement which may require more of their earnings than they acquire.  When a family’s earnings dictate that they should purchase a house that cost $300,000 and they knowingly purchase a house that cost $600,000; they are asking for trouble. Even if the husband and wife are employed and making good wages together; perhaps the husband or the wife may become ill; unemployed, involved in an accident, or some other unseen problem; then they cannot pay the payments of the $600,000 home. Their lives are financially ruined; they must start over.

Consider this:

            If you have found yourself involved in a similar situation in life; remember this; no one can for-see every possible problem or glitch in their financial life but good planning and sound judgment will go a long way toward having a good, financially sound life.

HOW ABOUT BEING A SOUND THINKER ABOUT YOU SPIRITUAL LIFE.

            There are many different religious in the world today and only one of them is acceptable to God for salvation from sin and acquiring eternal life with the Godhead (i.e. Father-Son-Holy Spirit) in heaven, someday in the future. The Bible is clear about a person’s inability, unknowns, stubbornness, and indecision proneness during his life in this world. Notice the following references regarding this point:

 Jer. 10:23

O LORD, I know that the way of man is not in himself: it is not in man that walked to direct his steps.

Lam. 3:26

It is good that a man should both hope and quietly wait for the salvation of the LORD.

Rom 8:24-25

24 for we are saved by hope: but hope that is seen is not hope: for what a man seethe, why doth he yet hope for? 25 but if we hope for that we see not, then do we with patience wait for it. KJV

Titus 1:2

 In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began;

Heb 6:18-19

18 That by two immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us:

19 Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast, and which entereth into that within the veil; KJV

Consider this:

As we live in this world pray that we make wise and considered decisions about our physical life? May our choices regarding temporal things be wise and thoughtful so that our life may be filled with joy and happiness? Yet; may we also be conscious of our spiritual life and well-being as we reside here. Life lived as a Christian is an excellent process that enables us to make good choices in our whole life regarding physical as well as spiritual situations and emergencies in life. Indeed; we can always turn to God and have a conversation with Him as often as we require help and guidance…

Consider These Scripture Passages:

Matt. 11:28-30

28 Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.

30 For my yoke are easy, and my burden is light. KJV

James 5:16

Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availed much. KJV

2 Peter 3:9

The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. KJV

THE VALUE AND IMPORTANCE OF

GOSPEL MEETINGS

The value of gospel meetings [i.e. revivals] have long been a subject of debate. On the one hand there are those that champion the philosophy that the gospel meeting of today does no good. There are those on the other hand that tell us that the value of gospel meetings  to the overall spiritual and numerical growth of the congregation  is substantial.  If we look only at the conversions to be numbered in the gospel meeting we may indeed claim that they have not been productive in recent years -- generally speaking.   Surely the immediate number of conversions is an inadequate devise for measuring the benefits of a gospel meeting, please notice the following:

1.               THE GOSPEL IS PREACHED EACH SERVICE DURING A GOSPEL MEETING:

2 Tim. 4:2,

2 Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke,

exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching.  NKJV

2.               BRETHREN HAVE OCCASION TO INTERACT TOGETHER:

Eph. 4:3,

3 endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. NKJV

3.              THE CONGREGATION IS STIMULATED TO UNITED EFFORT:

Heb. 10:24-25

24 And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works,

25 not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching.

4.             OPPORTUNITIES TO MEET CHRISTIANS FROM OTHER CONGREGATIONS IS ENHANCED:

1 Thess. 1:8,

8 For from you sounded out the word of the Lord not only in Macedonia and Achaia, but also in every place your faith to God-ward is spread abroad; so that we need not to speak any thing.

5.            THE LOCAL MEMBERSHIP HAS SPECIAL INCENTIVE TO INVITE OTHERS TO ATTEND THE SERVICES:

Matt. 28:19,

            19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of

the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, NKJV

6.            IT IS AN OPPORTUNITY FOR EVERY CHRISTIAN TO WORK:

Titus 3:1-2,

1 Remind them to be subject to rulers and authorities, to obey, to be ready for every good work,

James 1:25-26

25 But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he     being not        a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.

26 If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his             own heart, this man's religion is vain. KJV

7.           IT IS A TIME FOR PERSONAL AND CONGREGATIONAL PRAYER:

1 Thess. 5:17, 18,

17 pray without ceasing,

18 in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.

IDENTIFYING NEEDED GROWTH AREAS FOR THE CHRISTIAN

All Christians are encouraged by the apostle Peter to grow spiritually - 2 Peter 3:18 - But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.

In 2 Peter 1:5-9 we have listed seven points of growth where the Christian must develop as they seek maturity. The new Christian is to seek aid in growth from other faithful brethren and through personal study and Bible class association. Please notice the seven points listed:

TEXT: 2 Peter 1:5-9 - 5 And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; 6 And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness; 7 And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity. 8 For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 But he that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins. KJV

1-Virtue

2-Knowledge

3-Temperance

4-Patience

5-Godliness

6-Brotherly Kindness

7-Love (Charity)

Volume 12                           Number 1a                            January 2010

==========================================

Alan E. Highers

Several years ago I heard Leroy Brownlow speak on the subject, ”Preach What You Practice.“ At first I thought he had stated it backwards. We have all heard the saying, ”Practice what you preach,“ meaning that we should practice in accordance with what we tell others. But brother Brownlow said exactly what he meant. He was a great preacher. He was saying that we should ”preach“ what we ”practice,“ meaning that if we practice something, we should not be ashamed to preach it.

Do We Preach What We Practice?

We practice singing in worship without instrumental accompaniment (Eph. 5:19; Col. 3:16). Churches of Christ are almost unique in this practice. If we practice singing a cappella (without an instrument), we should preach what we practice; Why not tell others why we practice as we do? If outsiders visit the assemblies of churches of Christ, the absence of an instrument usually is the first thing they notice. Most of them are interested to know why we do not have instrumental music. Why do some preachers avoid this subject? They rarely, if ever, mention the matter, and they seem reluctant to proclaim to others the reasons for our practice. If singing is our practice, should we not preach what we practice? It is unfortunate that we have an entire generation of young people growing up in some congregations who never hear why we practice as we do. Some congregations among us have started to add an instrumental service. It is unlikely that these congregations have heard a sermon from the pulpit on instrumental music in the last twenty-five years. A lack of teaching has made them ”soft“ on the subject. An untaught membership is ripe and ready for apostasy. We ought to preach what we practice.

We practice immersion into Christ for the remission of sins (Acts 2:38; Rom. 6:3-4). We are different in this respect from most religious bodies in our communities. Some practice sprinkling instead of immersion and administer such an act even upon infants. Some teach that one is saved at the point of faith before and without water baptism, and that ”God, for Christ’s sake, has pardoned their sins“ before they are baptized. Jesus said, ”He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved“ (Mark 16:16). This is what we practice. Should we not preach what we practice? Some years ago, an elder in the church said to me: ”Our preacher is a good man, but he does not preach on the plan of salvation. A person could attend for a year without hearing a sermon on what one must do to be saved.“ If we do not teach the truth on baptism and the plan of salvation, who will teach it; we cannot depend on the denominations around us to proclaim the truth on this subject because most of them do not believe it. They teach that ”faith only is a most wholesome doctrine, and very full of comfort.“ James declared that one is justified by works, and ”not by faith only“ (James 2:24); we must recognize that the pulpit generally ”sets the tone“ for the congregation. If the truth on the gospel plan of salvation does not ring out from the pulpit, the congregation will become weak and sickly on the fundamentals of obedience to the truth. We ought to preach what we practice.

According to our practice, there is one body (Eph. 4:4-6). Look all around you in the religious world. There are many bodies. They all are competing for the hearts and souls of men. Some of these teach ”once saved, always saved.“ Others declare that God already has predestined those who will be saved and those who will be lost and that man can do nothing of himself to be saved. Most religious bodies teach that one does not have to be baptized to be saved. Some bow down before images. What are we doing to uphold the ”one body“ taught in the scriptures? Are our young people being educated to know the difference in the one body in the New Testament and the many bodies established by men? There was a time when few young people who grew up in churches of Christ would or could ever join a denomination. Is that still true? Please consider this question:

When is the last time you heard a lesson from the pulpit that clearly distinguished the New Testament church from denominationalism? It once was commonplace for preachers of the gospel to deliver a lesson on ”The Identity of the Church.“ It was a lesson that discussed how to identify the true church and how to recognize its existence today. There is a vast contrast between such lessons and much of what we hear now from pulpits even in churches of Christ. Keep in mind that many people choose a church because of its location, or because people are friendly, or because of the standing of the church in the community, but these are not valid scriptural reasons for becoming a member of the church. Some seem to think we should seek converts with hamburgers and hot dogs and hope they learn the truth at some later time. This methodology has the effect of filling the church with unconverted members. We believe and practice that there is one body and that the New Testament church is distinct from denominationalism. We ought to preach what we practice.

We are not suggesting that only the first principles should be preached, but rather that the fundamentals should not be neglected or overlooked. In order to preach what we practice, it is not necessary to be thoughtless or unkind. It is unfortunate that some have portrayed distinctive, straightforward preaching as arrogant and overbearing. N. B. Hardeman conducted five cooperative meetings in Nashville, Tennessee, which became known as the ”Tabernacle Meetings.“ Three of these meetings were conducted at the Ryman Auditorium which later became the home of the ”Grand Old’ Opry.“ The sermons were carried by the daily newspaper in Nashville and later published in book form. More than 200 people were baptized during the first meeting. A reading of these sermons will demonstrate that one can preach the truth without compromise, yet do so in a kind and forthright manner.

The Example of Paul

There is a truly remarkable statement by the apostle Paul found in 2 Corinthians 4:13. He quotes the psalmist, ”I believed, therefore have I spoken“ (Ps. 116:10), and the apostle adds, ”We also believe, and therefore speak.“ Think of the rich meaning of Paul’s declaration. Why does he speak? He says we ”believe, and therefore speak.“ Paul believed what he was preaching! Therefore, he spoke. What will one do if he truly believes and honors the word of God? Paul’s answer is that, if one truly believes, he will speak. This is Paul’s way of saying that we should preach what we practice.

The prophet Jeremiah once grew so discouraged that he decided to speak no more in the name of the Lord, but he said the word of God was in his heart ”as a burning fire shut up in my bones,“ and he could not remain silent (Jer. 20:9). We need more preachers with fire in their bones instead of weak tea in their veins.

One of the most memorable utterances ever spoken by the apostle Paul is found in Acts 20:26-27, ”Wherefore I take you to record this day, that I am pure from the blood of all men. For I have not shunned to declare unto you all the counsel of God.“ Paul did not say he was pure from the blood of all men because all men heeded what he said. He did not say he was pure from the blood of all men because all men obeyed the message he preached. He was pure from the blood of all men because he did not fail ”to declare unto you all the counsel of God.“ He declared the whole counsel of God. How can one discharge his responsibility to ”all men“ if he does not declare the plan of salvation, or the church for which Jesus died, or the necessity of obedience to the gospel? It is a mighty responsibility.

We believe the heart of the gospel is the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ (1 Cor. 15:1-3. It is obvious, however, that the life of Christ and his death, burial, and resurrection involve other obligations. When Philip spoke to the Ethiopian, he ”preached unto him Jesus“ (Acts 8:35), yet the Ethiopian eunuch responded by asking, ”See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized?“ (Acts 8:36) Philip’s preaching of Jesus included the responsibility of the eunuch to be baptized into Christ.

It pleased God through the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe (1 Cor. 1:21). Preaching is incredibly important in God’s plan. It is not only directed to the unconverted, but it is designed to strengthen the saved. Every generation needs to hear the faith presented again. Every congregation, with its young people, its new converts, and even its seasoned members, needs to hear the ”old, old story“ over and over.

A Crisis in the Pulpit

There can be little doubt that we are experiencing a ”crisis in the pulpit.“ This fact is not cited to detract from the work of hundreds of faithful gospel preachers or to discourage those who may not be living up to their potential, but rather to make us aware of conditions and movements seriously affecting the church and the pulpit.

Phil Sanders wrote an article which appeared in the July issue of the Gospel Advocate about ”The Emerging Church Movement.“ This is an influential movement rapidly spreading among denominational bodies and even influencing some in the church. The author mentioned several characteristics of the movement which have a bearing on preaching among churches of Christ. He stated: ”Emergent’s place the outward over the inward (doing good over what one believes). For emergent’s, what one believes is not important; but whether one does good toward others is highly important.“ How many times have you seen this emphasis in the pulpit? Be kind, be good neighbors, be considerate, but with very little emphasis about right beliefs, sound doctrine, or fundamentals of the faith.

Further: ”They speak much about the grace of Christ but lose sight that the main burden of the preaching of Jesus was a call to repentance (Mt. 4:17). . . .Things such as sin, repentance, and hell have little place in the emerging church.“ We might add that things such as sin, repentance, and hell have little place in the preaching delivered from some pulpits. Some of our brethren are being influenced by postmodernism and the emerging church who may have never heard of postmodernism or the emerging church, but its far-reaching implications have colored their view. Doctrinal preaching largely has become a thing of the past for them. Phil Sanders has wisely admonished: ”Elders, preachers and leaders will do well to be informed and avoid the error of such trends.“

In the August Gospel Advocate, David Tarbet, preacher for the White Oaks congregation in Dallas, states: ”Apostasy only comes after a long absence of decisive doctrinal preaching on subjects the church needs to hear. When the brethren are not reminded of the truth, they forget the reasons for opposing error and lose their convictions. Then change agents can begin the steps which inevitably lead to the adoption of instrumental music, women’s leadership roles in worship, ecumenical fellowship, and open membership. It’s been years in many congregations since there has been strong biblical teaching and preaching on these matters. Surely preachers and elders will be held accountable for what is not being taught that ought to be taught.“ Are we listening?

Any congregation that has a steady diet of non-doctrinal preaching will eventually become weak on doctrine. This is precisely what has happened in many places where the instrument is being introduced, women are assuming a public role in the assembly, and a complete denominational attitude exists toward the church. It is not necessary to preach error and false doctrine for these conditions to develop. It is only necessary to have ”soft“ preaching, preaching that conforms to the emerging church and postmodern models, and preaching that does not strengthen brethren to ”continue in the faith“ (Acts 14:22). When 95% of what is presented in the pulpit could be preached at most denominations in town, something is wrong.

We sincerely admire those who ”preach the word.“ We honor and appreciate every elder which keeps watch for the safety and purity of the church. This task is more challenging with every passing year. Elders and preachers must become familiar with the conditions and trends that are developing around us. If we are not aware of these trends, we are not likely to recognize them when they begin to surface in the congregation. Every worldly movement is likely to exert an influence on the church unless we are alert to the dangers. Be watchful. Be vigilant. Hold a steady course. ”Wherefore take unto you the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand“ (Eph. 6:13). --- Reprinted with permission from Spiritual Sword 40:1 (Oct. 2008) From Truth Magazine – January 2009 Issue

BEGINNING A NEW YEAR

The New Year will surely bring new challenges and opportunities to us as Christians as well as to the congregation as a unit. We will have opportunities again this year to teach other people about the Lord and about the things that he has done for mankind. Indeed, we will have opportunities to visit in other places and hear and see how brethren in other congregations are progressing and how they approach those that are not Christians in their areas of the country. Perhaps we will gain some helpful information that the congregation here can implement. This year we have two gospel meetings scheduled and will plan to do extensive advertising for the meetings; you may want to make a mental note of the two meetings (SPRING April 22-25, 2010 – Arthur Adams (Plymouth, IN) – confirmed --- FALL September 19-24, 2010 - Aaron Veyon (Fredericktown, OH) – confirmed).  While we will have two meetings this year, other congregations in the area will be conducting meetings as well; as we have opportunity let us plan to visit with some of the congregations in the area while they are having their gospel meetings.                                                                                                                         … glclair@aol.com

News and Views from Cemetery Road church of Christ

Hilliard, Ohio – January 2010

Pressing onward:

As we consider the work of God in our lives it is always with fear and trembling that we acknowledge our work and faith in the things of God. It is impossible to work and labor faithfully with God except possessed with unwavering confidence in God and His ability to provide everything that He reveals for humankind via His Holy Word (i.e. the Bible).  The Scriptures tells us as workers in the Vineyard of the Lord several things; please note the following list (i.e. the list is not complete).

1. WE ARE LABOURERS TOGETHER WITH GOD - 1 Cor. 3:9 - For we are laborers together with God: ye are God's husbandry, ye are God's building. KJV

2. WE ARE TO CONVERT AND RESTORE THE SINFUL - James 5:20 - Let him know, that he which converteth the sinner from the error of his way shall save a soul from death, and shall hide a multitude of sins. KJV

Gal. 6:1 - Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted. KJV

3. WE MUST SOW THE GOOD SEED; and LEAVE THE INCREASE TO THE LORD, He will give the increase - 1 Cor. 3:7-9 - 7 So then neither is he that planteth any thing, neither he that watereth; but God that giveth the increase. 8 Now he that planteth and he that watereth are one: and every man shall receive his own reward according to his own labor. 9 For we are laborers together with God: ye are God's husbandry, ye are God's building. KJV

4. WE MUST CONSISTENTLY and WITH LOVE SERVE WITH PATIENCE OUR LORD:

1 Thess. 1:3 - 3 Remembering without ceasing your work of faith, and labor of love , and patience of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ, in the sight of God and our Father;

Eph. 4:15 - But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ:

Eph. 4:2-3 - 2 With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love; 3 Endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. KJV

CONSIDER THIS:

Let us acknowledge that we are children of God and that we will live as instructed by God via His Holy Word. May we each consider ourselves as learners –

This coming year we have scheduled two GOSPEL MEETINGS;

While we will have two meetings this year, other congregations in the area will be conducting gospel meetings as well; as we have opportunity let us plan to visit with some of the congregations in the area while they are having their gospel meetings; the meeting announcements of congregations in driving distance of Hilliard are posted on the bulletin board in the vestibule as they are received here. Check the bulletin board occasionally so that you will be continually updated about happenings that are of interest to Christians.

NOTE FROM GARRETH & BARBARA:

We are always happy to see another New Year come; We understand that many people make resolutions at the beginning of a New Year; we do not make resolutions, we continue the commitment that we made to become Christians over 50 years ago. We are constantly aware of the responsibility we have to God as Christians but we are also committed to being the best servants as preacher and teacher here that we are capable. Therefore, we ALWAYS SEEK THE BEST FOR THE CHURCH; EACH MEMBER (i.e. we are all brothers and sisters together in Christ).

We solicit you prayers and we will consistently be available to aid those who need us and we will always endeavor to build the church with you as God would require of us. May God continue to bless our work together and may our love, health, and growth together please God.
