            This is the first issue of 1998. This is also the first month that the current editor has had the privilege of preparing, printing, and distributing the HILLIARD BULLETIN. I do pray that the effort that I shall put forth here will be read and considered by those in the congregation here and in whatever place the HILLIARD BULLETIN will go.

 

            This is the first month that Barbara and I have had the honor and privilege of working with the congregation as your preacher. We will do our very best to help in whatever way that becomes expedient in our relationship together with all of you that make up the church here.

 

            The HILLIARD BULLETIN will be presented once each month with the hope that we will be able to encourage study by the use of articles and suggestions. Most of the writing will be by the editor. I will use good material as I deem it to be of value in the growth process of the church here.

 

            If you have suggestions for a subject that you desire to study or use as material for a Bible study let the editor know, he may be able to put together a study or an article that will accomplish what you want. Feel free to make suggestions.

BROTHERLY LOVE

DISCUSSION:

 

In this study we will consider:

 

I.          THE HAZARD'S OF IT:

            1.         Diversity of talents.

            2.         Diversity of standards.

            3.         Simple misunderstandings.

            4.         A remarkable diversity.

 

II.        THE MAINTENANCE OF IT:

            1.         Duty.

            2.         Consider Divine love.

            3.         From a pure heart fervently.

            4.         Without Hypocrisy.

            5.         Because love is of God.

 

III.       THE MANIFESTATION OF IT:

            1.         In hospitality.

            2.         In sympathy toward the unfortunate of others.

            3.         In joy toward the successful.

            4.         In benevolence toward all.

DEFINING “BROTHERLY LOVE"

 

            The love of brothers (or sisters) for each other; the love of fellow Christians for one another, all being children of the same Father in a special sense. Occasionally the New Testament uses the word brother to refer simply to another human being, whether a Christian or not <Matt. 25:40>, or to one's fellow countryman <Rom. 9:3>. Usually, however, it is used of a fellow believer in Christ. This is true of all places where the concept of brotherly love, or brotherly kindness, appears.

            In the Old Testament, Israelites were taught not to hate their brothers: "You shall not hate your brother in your heart... but you shall love your neighbor as yourself" <Lev. 19:17-18>. This emphasis is continued and is made even more positive in the New Testament. Believers are exhorted to "be kindly affectionate to one another with brotherly love" <Rom. 12:10>, to "let brotherly love continue" <Heb. 13:1>, to "love the brotherhood" <1 Pet. 2:17>, and to "love as brothers" <1 Pet. 3:8>.

            Brotherly love is to be the badge, or hallmark, of a Christian <John 13:35>. The Greek word for brotherly love <Philadelphia> appears as the name of a city in the province of Asia mentioned in the Book of Revelation <Rev. 1:11>.

DISCUSSION:   IN THIS STUDY WE WILL CONSIDER

 

I.          HAZARD'S OF IT: That it is often strained is implied in our text.  Many things may hinder its   growth and extinguish its light for others.

 

            1.         Diversity of talents. Those with greater talents may become proud, or those with lesser talents `may become envious, crushing the holy affection.

 

            2.         Diversity of emphasis. Though we all read the same Bible, some may lay greater emphasis on one point, causing stress.

 

            3.         Simple misunderstandings. These too arise among the very sincerest of brethren, causing severe strain on brotherly love.

 

            4.         Diverse ethnic, educational qualifications, environmental influences, etc

            These differences often cause strain among brethren, yet the Holy Spirit instructs us in

            Ephesians  4:2-3, "With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love; Endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace."

 

II.        THE MAINTENANCE OF IT:

 

            1.         It is the duty of each Christian to develop a deep and abiding love for other Christians.

 

            2.         By considering Divine love first:

I John  4:19-21,

19 We love him, because he first loved us.

20 If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen? 21 And this commandment have we from him, That he who loveth God love his brother also. 

 

            3.         From a pure heart fervently:

1 Peter 1:22, "Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned  love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently:"

 

4.                  Without Hypocrisy:

Romans 12:9-10, “9 Let love be without dissimulation. Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good. 10 Be kindly affectionate one to another with brotherly love; in honor preferring one another;

 

            5.         Because love is of God:

            I John  4:7-11, “7 Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God. 8 He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love. 9 In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him 10 Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. 11 Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another.

 

III.       THE MANIFESTATION OF IT:

            Brotherly love, when genuine will find expression in deeds,  it will bear fruit.

 

1.         In hospitality: 

Hebrews  13:2, "Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have                    entertained angels unawares."

 

2.         In sympathy toward the misfortunes of others:

                        A.        In sin:  Galatians  6:1-2, “1 Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted. 2 Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.

 

                        B.        In hardship, sickness, or need: Galatians  6:10, "As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith."

James 1:27, "Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the      fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world."

                       

                        C.        In joy toward the successful:  Romans 12:15, 16, “15 Rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep with them that weep. 16 Be of the same mind one toward another. Mind not high things, but condescend to men of low estate. Be not wise in your own conceits.

 

                        D.        In benevolence toward all:

                       

                        CONSIDER THIS: True character does not always appear on the surface:  some people we know may be better than they first appear to be.

 

                        Lot is an example: Consider his actions in Genesis chapters 18 and 19 - then read the statement about Lot by Peter:  2 Peter  2:6-9, “6 And turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorra into ashes condemned them with an overthrow, making them an example unto those that after should live ungodly; 7 And delivered just Lot, vexed with the filthy conversation of the wicked: 8 (For that righteous man dwelling among them, in seeing and hearing, vexed his righteous soul from day to day with their unlawful deeds;) 9 The Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptations, and to reserve the unjust unto the day of judgment to be punished:   (KJV)

 

CONCLUSION:

 

            Christians should develop their love for one another, this is surely one failing of many Christians today.  Everywhere we look today, brethren are dividing and forming cliques to further their own ends – such things are sinful and are contrary to the spirit of love as taught in God’s Word.

            Brotherly love is not concerned with self but is concerned with the good of others, everywhere; this ought to be our preoccupation today and every day.

AND TIME GOES ON

           

            Each day that we live we will occupy our time doing something.  We would be ill advised to spend too much time observing media programming Each day that we live here in the world we are continually exposed to all that goes on in our world, The good, the bad, the disgusting, are shown to us via the electronic media.  Nothing happens in our world that we do not know about almost immediately.  For some strange reason the electronic media and the printed media present, for the most part,  the awful, evil, side of events that occur.  Perhaps these media moguls are convinced that sensationalism is the way to build ratings for their shows,  apparently, they believe horror, mayhem, sex, and violence sells anything. 

 

            As we consider these things let us always be aware of the potential danger that exposure to this type of media exposure may bring us.  It is not too great an exaggeration to suggest that whatever we allow ourselves to imbibe within our mind will eventually influence our character. 

Read Matthew  15:17-20

17        Do not ye yet understand, that whatsoever entereth in at the mouth goeth into the belly, and is cast out into the draught?

18        But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart; and they defile the man.

19        For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies:

20        These are the things which defile a man: but to eat with unwashen hands defileth not a man.  We are all products of whatever we allow to enter our heart (i.e., seat of intellect) through our eyes and through our hearing.  Because our character is established by whatever we see and hear,  we must be very careful of those things that we hear and see.that is designed for our viewing,  it will surely have an effect upon our character eventually.   There may be some programs that will not adversely effect our character -- we need to find these programs and avoid the bad ones.

 

            Time goes on!  That is a fact for all of us to deal with day after day.  Dealing with spare time may become a problem for those who have an abundance of it.  Remember this:  nothing is valuable if it is does not increase our faith in God, Christ, and spiritual things in general;

Ecclesiastes 10:18, “18 By slothfulness the roof sinketh in; and through idleness of the hands the house leaketh.” (ASV)

 

1 Timothy  4:13, "Till I come, give attendance to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine."

            In our relationship together here in the Family of God,  if there is anything that we can do to aid you in your life as a Christian,  please let us know.  We,  as part of the Family here on Cemetery Road want to be as helpful and useful in God's service as possible in whatever way we can.

 

REMEMBER THIS:

 

            We are brethren, working together in the greatest effort that has ever been available to humanity. 

1 Corinthians 12:12-24

12 For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of the body, being many, are one body; so also is Christ.

13 For in one Spirit were we all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether bond or free; and were all made to drink of one Spirit.

14 For the body is not one member, but many.

15 If the foot shall say, Because I am not the hand, I am not of the body; it is not therefore not of the body.

16 And if the ear shall say, Because I am not the eye, I am not of the body; it is not therefore not of the body.

17 If the whole body were an eye, where were the hearing? If the whole were hearing, where were the smelling?

18 But now hath God set the members each one of them in the body, even as it pleased him.

19 And if they were all one member, where were the body?

20 But now they are many members, but one body.

21 And the eye cannot say to the hand, I have no need of thee: or again the head to the feet, I have no need of you.

22 Nay, much rather, those members of the body which seem to be more feeble are necessary:

23 and those (parts) of the body, which we think to be less honorable, upon these we bestow more abundant honor; and our uncomely (parts) have more abundant comeliness;

24 whereas our comely (parts) have no need: but God tempered the body together, giving more abundant honor to that (part) which lacked; “(ASV)

 

WHY SO MANY DO NOT COME TO GOD; THEY RESIST HIM:

 

            Do you think it is impossible to resist God?  Since God created the universe,  it would seem that the question is foolish yet the Bible teaches that man has resisted God's goodness toward him from the very beginning.  Please notice the following verses of Scripture about man's capacity to resist God:

Acts 7:51

51        Ye stiffnecked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, ye do always resist the Holy Ghost: as your fathers did, so do ye.

2 Timothy  3:8

8          Now as Jannes and Jambres withstood Moses, so do these also resist the truth: men of corrupt minds, reprobate concerning the faith.

2 Chronicles  30:8

8          Now be ye not stiffnecked, as your fathers were, but yield yourselves unto the LORD, and enter into his sanctuary, which he hath sanctified for ever: and serve the LORD your God, that the fierceness of his wrath may turn away from you.  (KJV)

Acts 7:51

51        Ye stiffnecked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, ye do always resist the Holy Ghost: as your fathers did, so do ye.   (KJV)

Jeremiah  8:5-6

5          Why then is this people of Jerusalem slidden back by a perpetual backsliding? they hold fast deceit, they refuse to return.

6          I hearkened and heard, but they spake not aright: no man repented him of his wickedness, saying, What have I done? every one turned to his course, as the horse rusheth into the battle.  (KJV)

Hosea 11:7

7          And my people are bent to backsliding from me: though they called them to the most High, none at all would exalt him.

THERE ARE NO TRUE ATHEISTS

 

            Whenever the time comes for man to die, he begins to wonder if he is ready to pass from this life into that other state. The person who faces death will finally look seriously at his status with God.  The person with a proper perspective on eternal things will make some changes in his life at the last minute if possible. It is a fact, no one wants to exist forever in hell fire (i.e. Gehenna) if he can do something about it. The only time one can make any changes in his life (i.e. his relationship to God) is while he/she is alive here in this world. Indeed, we have about 70 years (i.e. average age) to make some decision about our future (i.e. after death). In regard to this situation we are discussing here notice the following Biblical story about two men.

 

Luke 16:19-31, “19 Now there was a certain rich man, and he was clothed in purple and fine linen, faring sumptuously every day:

20 and a certain beggar named Lazarus was laid at his gate, full of sores,

21 and desiring to be fed with the (crumbs) that fell from the rich man's table; yea, even the dogs came and licked his sores.

22 And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and that he was carried away by the angels into Abraham's bosom: and the rich man also died, and was buried.

23 And in Hades he lifted up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.

24 And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am in anguish in this flame.

25 But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and Lazarus in like manner evil things: but now here he is comforted, and thou art in anguish.

26 And besides all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed, that they that would pass from hence to you may not be able, and that none may cross over from thence to us.

27 And he said, I pray thee therefore, father, that thou wouldest send him to my father's house;

28 for I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment.

29 But Abraham saith, They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them.

30 And he said, Nay, father Abraham: but if one go to them from the dead, they will repent.

31 And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, if one rise from the dead.” (ASV)

 

CONSIDER THIS:

 

            Take time to serve God while you live!

Do it today so that you can enjoy life for a while before the end comes.

REMEMBER; there are no atheist, in HELL

THE GOOD LIFE

 

DEFINING THE SUBJECT:

 

            The "good life" has many definitions; some people consider the acquisition of material wealth as the good life.  Other people consider the "good life" to consist in personal acclaim or prestige.  There are still other people who consider a combination of the two previous matters as the "good life" and yet there is still another lifestyle that is superior to all the three previously discussed.  The most important of all accomplishments is to attain the correct relationship with our Creator, this truly does constitute the "good life" -- let us explore this idea further in this article:

 

1.         Man is alienated from God, consider the following:

            Romans 5:10,

10        For if, when we were God's enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life!

            2 Corinthians  5:17-19,

17        Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold all things are become new.

18        And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation;

19        To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation.

            Colossians  1:20-21,

20        And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven.

21        And you, that were sometime alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now hath he reconciled   (KJV)

 

2.         God has provided essential grace so that man might be reconciled to God, God    providing an acceptable sacrifice (i.e., Christ):

            Romans  3:23-26, “23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,

24 and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.

25 God presented him as a sacrifice of atonement, through faith in his blood. He did this to demonstrate his justice, because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished- 26 he did it to demonstrate his justice at the present time, so as to be just and the one who justifies those who have faith in Jesus.

 

Ephesians 1:6-7, “6 To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved. 7 In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;”

           

1 Timothy 1:14-15, “14 And the grace of our Lord was exceeding abundant with faith and love which is in Christ Jesus. 15 This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief.   (KJV)

 

3.         Obedience completes the reconciliation process:

            Titus 2:11-14, “11 For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men,

12 Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world; 13 Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Savior Jesus Christ; 14 Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.   (KJV)

 

CONCLUSION:

 

            From our study, it is apparent, the "good life" (i.e., the good relationship to God) is acquired as a result of God's "un-merited favor" toward us first and foremost.  Without God's initiative toward man in sending His Son, Jesus Christ to atone for our sin, reconciliation would have been impossible.

 

            In addition to that which God has done for us that we could not do for ourselves (i.e., He provided grace), we too, are to participate in establishing that correct relationship with God, we are to obey His instructions (see point # 3 above).  To obey God's instructions to acquire salvation from sin (i.e., the "good life") we are to:

 

            A.        Hear the gospel, Romans 10:17

            B.        Believe the gospel, Mark 16:15, 16

            C.        Repent of sins, Luke 13:3; Acts 2:38

            D.        Be Baptized, Matthew 28:18-20; Acts 2:38

 

CONSIDER THIS, TOO:

 

            The "good life" is available to you and me as a result of God's grace and our obedience, one cannot underestimate the importance of having that good relationship with God that can really be considered the "good life".  If you are looking for a direction in your life, salvation from sin, or if you have a desire to live "the good life" please examine this option.  No one can make this decision for another person, everyone must personally choose to live the good life or reject it. 

THE ULTIMATE DECISION IS INDIVIDUAL.

"HARDLY A DAY PASSES."

           Our life consists in all of the places, all of the people, and all of the events that we have experienced in time.  Many of us have many memories of past days and events, some of our memories are sweet and some of them are not.  Yet, as we live and move and have our being this side of the grave we cannot but utter, “Hardly a day passes,

 

1.         That I don’t think of all that God has done for me.  Yes, I know that He has made it possible for my sins to be forgiven.  If God had not provided His grace to me I could not have been saved from my sin regardless of all my human effort; John 3:16, "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life."  (KJV)   Indeed,  I have obeyed the Lord's instructions, Hebrews 5:8, 9  "Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered; And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him;" And for all this, "hardly a day passes"  that I don't think of God's goodness toward me.

 

2.         That I don't thank of my father and mother who have passed on to be with the Lord. There is really no way that I can know whether they were acceptable to our Lord and are ready for the resurrection and assignment, but "hardly a day passes that” I don't think of them."

 

3.         That I don't think of my two brothers who have died and are now awaiting the judgment. I remember them in past times when we were young and innocent.  I also remember the harshness of life as we grew into adulthood and began to experience the pull of the world and all of the enticements that call us away from God.  I remember too that they both became Christians, and that they were faithful and full of zeal at one time. "Hardly a day passes"  that I do not remember them with a wonder about their eternal state...”

 

4.         That I don't think of my one brother that is left on this side of life.  I know that our Lord Jesus Christ will save everyone Acts 10:34-35, "Then Peter opened his mouth, and said, of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons: But in every nation he that feareth him, and worketh righteousness, is accepted with him." (KJV) that will come to Him on His terms, I do hope that my only remaining brother will live a faithful and true life in God's service.  "Hardly a day passes” that I do not think of him and pray for him."

 

5.         That I don't think of those with whom I have labored over the years as evangelist. I often think of the brethren in Illinois. in  Arizona.,  in Texas., Mississippi,  and here in Ohio. Over the years Barbara and I have been blessed to know some truly remarkable people in these congregations.  I often think of their kindness and forbearance, and their continued love to us even though we are far removed from one another. "Hardly a day passes that’ I do not remember them by name and recall their faces." Psalms 133:1-3, "Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity! It is like the precious ointment upon the head, that ran down upon the beard, even Aaron's beard: that went down to the skirts of his garments; As the dew of Hermon, and as the dew that descended upon the mountains of Zion: for there the LORD commanded the blessing, even life for evermore."

 

6.         That I don't remember the many friends that we have scattered across this country.  Our friends that reside in Glendale, Az., Brawley, CA., Plymouth, IN.,  Phoenix, Az. Tombstone, Az., Canada, Columbus, OH., Bedford, OH., Norwalk, OH., Dayton, OH., Mansfield OH., Hilliard, OH., Eastern KY. (Jeff, Lothair, Hazard, etc.), Montgomery, TX., Dumas, TX., Meridian, MS., Jackson, MS., Chicago, IL., and other places.  "Hardly a day passes” that I do not think of these dear friends, some going back to my childhood."  "Hardly a day passes"  that I do not remember their financial and moral support when we had the auto accident in 1996 and the prayers, cards, and calls from them that have been so encouraging.

 

"A LOST FRIEND"

 

Around the corner I have a friend,

In this great nation that has no end;

Yet days go by and weeks rush on

And before I know it a month is gone.

 

I seldom see my friend's face -

Life is a swift and demanding race.

 

"Tomorrow", I say, "I will contact him,

 Just to show that I'm thinking of him."

But tomorrow comes and tomorrow goes.

And the distance between us grows and grows.

 

Around the corner - yet miles away...

"Here's a telegram, Sir:  Your friend died today."

And that's what we get and deserve in the end -

No contact with our friends:

Till the end...

 

7.         That I don't think of my four daughters and their families.   Barbara and I have been abundantly blessed to have had four daughters and seven grandchildren.  Their continued well being is always on my mind as I lay down and whenever I rise up.  I pray often for their health both physical and spiritual and petition our heavenly Father to be kind and patient toward them all.  "Hardly a day passes” that they do not come into my mind."

 

8.         That I don't thank God for allowing me to live another day.  As I grow older I indeed appreciate the beauty of God's creation, I do appreciate God's goodness and bounty that has been bestowed upon all of us that reside here in this world.   Acts 17:28-29,   "For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring...Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and man's devices"  Indeed,  "Hardly a day passes"  that I don't consider how blessed we are to be alive at this time in human history."

 

9.         "Hardly a day passes" that I am not thankful that Christ died for my sins and that His precious blood purchased the church that we are members of today.     Acts 20:28;

28        Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood.

Romans 3:25,

25        Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;

1 Corinthians 15:3-4,

3          For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;

4          And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

THE OPEN DOOR

The Lord of life comes forth to save

10.       "Hardly a day passes” That I don't realize how hard some things are to do ...

 

... IT IS NOT EASY:

 

To apologize.

To start over.

To take advice.

To be unselfish.

To admit mistakes.

To face a sneer.

To be charitable.

To keep trying.

To be considerate.

To be a gentleman, always.

To subdue an unruly temper.

To make the best of little.

To endure success.

To keep out of a rut.

To think before acting.

To forgive and try to forget.

To profit by my mistakes...

 

"BUT IT ALWAYS PAYS,

IN THE END."

 

11.       "Hardly a day passes" That I am not thankful for those who are dedicated to serving the Lord regardless of whatever comes upon them.  As I think of those  that have consistently stood for the truth regardless of the consequence I am truly encouraged to continue working at levels that are truly beyond my capacity - "thank God for you!

 

"THE FEW"

 

The easy roads are crowded,

And the level roads are jammed;

The pleasant little rivers

With the drifting folks are crammed,

But off yonder where it's rocky,

Where you get a better view,

You will find the ranks are thinning

And the travelers are few.

Where the going's smooth and pleasant

You will always find the throng,

For the many, mores the pity,

Seem to like to drift along.

But the steps that call for courage

And the task that's hard to do,

In the end results in glory

For the never-wavering "FEW."

 

12.       "Hardly a day passes” that I do not think of the heavenly home prepared for the faithful.  Not only does the home of the faithful come to my mind often but I long to go there someday, myself.

 

            Most of us that have seriously considered the heavenly home are constantly encouraged as we read and understand the 11th chapter of Hebrews. The mature Christian can relate to Abraham and Sarah as inspiration reveals the strength of their faith...

Hebrews 11:8-16,

8          By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went.

9          By faith he sojourned in the land of promise, as in a strange country, dwelling in tabernacles with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise:

10        For he looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God.

11        Through faith also Sara herself received strength to conceive seed, and was delivered of a child when she was past age, because she judged him faithful who had promised.

12        Therefore sprang there even of one, and him as good as dead, so many as the stars of the sky in multitude, and as the sand which is by the sea shore innumerable.

13        These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth.

14        For they that say such things declare plainly that they seek a country.

15        And truly, if they had been mindful of that country from whence they came out, they might have had opportunity to have returned.

16        But now they desire a better country, that is, an heavenly: wherefore God is not ashamed to be called their God: for he hath prepared for them a city.

 

13.       "Hardly a day passes that I do not learn something new." I recent years I have learned to be patient, to wait for people to get better as a result of their understanding of truth.    

John 8:31-32,

31 Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed;

32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.   (KJV)

 

CONCLUSION:

 

            I therefore encourage all Christians to be thankful of the good memories and wonderful friends that they have been privileged to have in life.  To also remember the bad times too,  make the most of present opportunities in life,  make sure that your past sins have been corrected and that you can look forward to Christ's second coming with hope and expectation of heaven. 

 

            God is just and will forgive us if we come to Him on His terms,

Hebrews 10:23,

“23 Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised;

I John 1:9,

9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

 

            No one can make my hope in heaven become a reality but me.  My conduct while I live here in this life and the things that I learn will help me deal correctly with my choices in life.  Hardly a day passes that I am not aware of all these things and others as well.  "Perhaps you, too, have memories -- learn from the past."

THAT ALL OF OUR MEMORIES WILL BE HAPPY ONES.”

THE DEVIL'S ABILITY TO TEMPT MAN

            One of the greatest problems that mankind faces today is the continued effort of the Devil to bring him into bondage and hold him there.  The Devil's forces are continuous and will not subside until the individual is completely void of righteousness.  Some of the methods used by the Devil are documented in the following study,  they are:

 

1.         "The lust of the flesh: (See KJV below). 1939  epithumia (ep-ee-thoo-mee'-ah); from 1937; a longing (especially for what is forbidden): KJV-- concupiscence, desire, lust (after). The desire of the flesh is the root of this particular sin.

 

2.         "The lust of the eyes" (See KJV below) 1939  epithumia (ep-ee-thoo-mee'-ah);

from 1937; a longing (especially for what is forbidden):  KJV-- concupiscence, desire, lust (after).That observed with the eyes is the source of this particular sin.

 

3.         "The pride of life." (See KJV below). The source of this sin is  inordinate pride -pride is the position gained or applause of man the perpetuator of this sin. (Source of all three Greek definitions:   Strong’s with numbers included)

 

I John 2:15-16;

15        Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.

16       For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.  (KJV)

 

CONSIDER THIS:

 

            In the very beginning (i.e., in the Garden of Eden) the Devil (i.e., the serpent) used the method pointed out in our text by John,  note the following reading please:     Genesis 3:1-6,

1          Now the serpent was more subtle than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?

2          And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden:

3          But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.

4          And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die:

5          For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.

6          And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.  (KJV)

 

            The Devil has not changed his approach,  he still uses the same methods of temptation today.  The Christian has an advantage over the non-Christian in that the Christian is aware of the Devil's devices and his evil intentions,  the non-Christian may not be aware of the Devil's devices.  For this reason the Christian ought to be consistently involved in dispensing his/her knowledge about the Devil's intentions to the unsuspecting relative, friend, or co-laborer at the place of employment.

 

            In consequence of these facts about the Devil,  temptation,  and life beyond the grave,  may we use our knowledge of these things to encourage the lost and the fallen  (cf., Gal 6:1-6,  1 "Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted.  2 Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.  3 For if a man think himself to be something, when he is nothing, he deceiveth himself.  4 But let every man prove his own work, and then shall he have rejoicing in himself alone, and not in another. 5 For every man shall bear his own burden.  6 Let him that is taught in the word communicate unto him that teacheth in all good things."(KJV).

 

Remember this,  we have only this life to do good,  therefore let us take advantage of every opportunity to reach out the hand of assistance to anyone in our path of life

LOVE (NOUN AND VERB)

            A. Verbs.

            1. agapao ^25^ and the corresponding noun agape (B, No. 1 below) present "the characteristic word of Christianity, and since the Spirit of revelation has used it to express ideas previously unknown, inquiry into its use, whether in Greek literature or in the Septuagint, throws but little light upon its distinctive meaning in the NT. cf, however, <Lev. 19:18; Deut. 6:5>.

 

            "Agape and agapao are used in the NT (a) to describe the attitude of God toward His Son, <John 17:26>; the human race, generally, <John 3:16; Rom. 5:8>, and to such as believe on the Lord Jesus Christ particularly <John 14:21>; (b) to convey His will to His children concerning their attitude one toward another, <John 13:34>, and toward all men, <1 Th ess. 3:12; 1 Cor. 16:14; 2 Pet. 1:7>; (c) to express the essential nature of God, <1 John 4:8>.

 

            "Love can be known only from the actions it prompts. God's love is seen in the gift of His Son, <1 John 4:9,10>. But obviously this is not the love of complacency, or affection, that is, it was not drawn out by any excellency in its objects, <Rom. 5:8>. It was an exercise of the divine will in deliberate choice, made without assignable cause save that which lies in the nature of God Himself, Cf. <Deut. 7:7,8>.

            "Love had its perfect expression among men in the Lord Jesus Christ, <2 Cor. 5:14; Eph. 2:4; 3:19; 5:2>; Christian love is the fruit of His Spirit in the Christian, <Gal. 5:22>.

 

            "Christian love has God for its primary object, and expresses itself first of all in implicit obedience to His commandments, <John 14:15, 21,23; 15:10; 1 John 2:5; 5:3; 2 John 6>. Self-will, that is, self-pleasing, is the negation of love to God.

 

            "Christian love, whether exercised toward the brethren, or toward men generally, is not an impulse from the feelings, it does not always run with the natural inclinations, nor does it spend itself only upon those for whom some affinity is discovered. Love seeks the welfare of all, <Rom. 15:2>, and works no ill to any, <13:8-10>; love seeks opportunity to do good to `all men, and especially toward them that are of the household of the faith,' <Gal. 6:10>. See further <1 Cor. 13> and <Col. 3:12-14>."

            In respect of agapao as used of God, it expresses the deep and constant "love" and interest of a perfect Being towards entirely unworthy objects, producing and fostering a reverential "love" in them towards the Giver, and a practical "love" towards those who are partakers of the same, and a desire to help others to seek the Giver.

 

            2. phileo ^5368^ is to be distinguished from agapao in this, that phileo more nearly represents "tender affection." The two words are used for the "love" of the Father for the Son, <John 3:35> (No. 1), and <5:20> (No. 2); for the believer, <14:21> (No. 1) and <16:27> (No. 2); both, of Christ's "love" for a certain disciple, <13:23> (No. 1), and <20:2> (No. 2). Yet the distinction between the two verbs remains, and they are never used indiscriminately in the same passage; if each is used with reference to the same objects, as just mentioned, each word retains its distinctive and essential character.

 

            Phileo is never used in a command to men to "love" God; it is, however, used as a warning in <1 Cor. 16:22>; agapao is used instead, e. g., <Matt. 22:37; Luke 10:27; Rom. 8:28; 1 Cor. 8:3; 1 Pet. 1:8; 1 John 4:21>. The distinction between the two verbs finds a conspicuous instance in the narrative of <John 21:15-17>. The context itself indicates that agapao in the first two questions suggests the "love" that values and esteems (cf. <Rev. 12:11>). It is an unselfish "love," ready to serve. The use of phileo in Peter's answers and the Lord's third question, conveys the thought of cherishing the Object above all else, of manifesting an affection characterized by constancy, from the motive of the highest veneration. See also Trench, Syn., Sec. xii.

 

            Again, to "love" (phileo) life, from an undue desire to preserve it, forgetful of the real object of living, meets with the Lord's reproof, <John 12:25>. On the contrary, to "love" life (agapao) as used in <1 Pet. 3:10>, is to consult the true interests of living. Here the word phileo would be quite inappropriate.

 

            Note: In <Mark 12:38>, KJV, thelo, "to wish," is translated "love" (RV, "desire").

 

            B. Nouns.

            1. agape ^26^, the significance of which has been pointed out in connection with A, No. 1, is always rendered "love" in the RV where the KJV has "charity," a rendering nowhere used in the RV; in <Rom. 14:15>, where the KJV has "charitably," the RV, adhering to the translation of the noun, has "in love."

 

            Note: In the two statements in <1 John 4:8> and <16>, "God is love," both are used to enjoin the exercise of "love" on the part of believers. While the former introduces a declaration of the mode in which God's love has been manifested <vv. 9,10>, the second introduces a statement of the identification of believers with God in character, and the issue at the Judgment Seat hereafter <v. 17>, an identification represented ideally in the sentence "as He is, so are we in this world."

 

            2. philanthropia ^5363^ denotes, lit., "love for man" (phileo and anthropos, "man"); hence, "kindness," <Acts 28:2>, in <Titus 3:4>, "(His) love toward man."# Cf. the adverb philanthropos, "humanely, kindly," <Acts 27:3>.#

 

            Note: For philarguria, "love of money," <1 Tim. 6:10>, see MONEY (love of).

CONSIDER THIS:

 

            Whenever we examine the Greek meaning of the words from which our English word love comes we are impressed with the Biblical concept.  The concept, love, is misunderstood by many honest people who assume that love is all that is essential to a good relationship with the Father, Christ, and the Holy Spirit -- this is a false notion as is exemplified by the following verses of Scripture:

John 14:15

15        If ye love me, keep my commandments. (KJV)

John 15:10-14

10        If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in his love.

11        These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full.

12        This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you.

13        Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.

14        Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you.  (KJV)

 

            Keeping the commandments of our Lord is a demonstration of man's love for God.  The failure to obey indicates a lack of faith or an unwillingness to conform to the Divine Nature -- both actions constitute rebellion against God.  Love in action, then;  is the willingness to conform ourselves to the nature of our example, Jesus Christ as we are capable,  in all things.     glc

CONSTANT ATTENTION

 

            The life of a Christian is a life of constant attention to spiritual details if it is to be successful.  The Christian that does not take care to be correct in his life with regard to God's instruction will surely fail to acquire that desired goal,  "heaven".  Please notice the following Scriptural references that attest to this fact:

Matthew  25:14-30

14        For the kingdom of heaven is as a man traveling into a far country, who called his own servants, and delivered unto them his goods.

15        And unto one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one; to every man according to his several ability; and straightway took his journey.

16        Then he that had received the five talents went and traded with the same, and made them other five talents.

17        And likewise he that had received two, he also gained other two.

18        But he that had received one went and digged in the earth, and hid his lord's money.

19        After a long time the lord of those servants cometh, and reckoneth with them.

20        And so he that had received five talents came and brought other five talents, saying, Lord, thou deliveredst unto me five talents: behold, I have gained beside them five talents more.

21        His lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.

22        He also that had received two talents came and said, Lord, thou deliveredst unto me two talents: behold, I have gained two other talents beside them.

            This parable teaches us that our life as Christians is to be lived out performing service to God with whatever talents (i.e., abilities)  that we possess.

Revelation 2:10

10        Fear none of those things which thou shalt suffer: behold, the devil shall cast some of you into prison, that ye may be tried; and ye shall have tribulation ten days: be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life.  (KJV)

            Although this passage is addressed to one of the sever churches of Asia,  the truth enjoined upon those Christians nearly 20 centuries ago is still applicable to us today -- "live faithful until we die."

ACCEPTING RESPONSIBILITY

            One of the characteristics that most people today have in common is their refusal to accept personal responsibility for things that they have control over.  It is not uncommon today to hear people give as their excuse for some failure in life one of the following:

 

1.         I did not know how to do it.

 

2.         I saw someone else do it that way and I thought it should be done that way.

 

3.         Someone told me so.

 

4.         I did not have time to read about the problem.

 

5.         Someone made me do it that way.

 

6.         I thought it was acceptable..

 

7.         Everyone else believes that is right.

 

There are many other responses given for failures in life by many people today just like these listed.  What is wrong with this list?  It simply is a dodging of personal responsibility and a failure to accept the consequence for a bad decision or a bad choice when called to account for the failure.

 

            In most all secular pursuits today,  people are refusing to accept responsibility for their deeds, lifestyle, or economic condition.  This attitude of refusing responsibility for personal actions is also a problem in many congregations today.

 

            The Bible tells us that our eternal destiny depends upon our acceptance of personal responsibility for the things we do and for the way we live.  Please observe the following Scriptural references that show personal responsibly is to be accepted if man is to please God:

CONCLUSION:

 

            In reality everyone is responsible for the choices that they make in every arena of life.  For every choice there are consequences,  therefore  when we accept responsibility for the decisions we make we will weigh the consequences before we make the choice.  To consider well our choices and the possible consequence is a Biblical principle that everyone should incorporate within their actions toward choices in life (i.e., count the cost or consider the consequence well before committing to a position),that is an exercise in personal responsibility.

SOME IMPORTANT FACTS ABOUT

THE CHURCH OF CHRIST

 


1.         Christ built it:

            Matt 16:18, “And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my          church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.” 

 

2.         Established on Pentecost:

            Acts 2:1, “1 And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.”

            Acts 2:38-41, “38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

            39 For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many        as the Lord our God shall call. 40 And with many other words did he testify and exhort, saying, Save yourselves from this untoward generation. 41 Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.”

            Acts 2:47, “Praising God, and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved.”

 

3.         Purchased with the blood of Christ:

            Acts 20:28   "Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which         the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood."

 

4.         The Lord adds the saved to it:

            Acts 2:47, “ praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved.”

 

5.         Christ is its foundation:

            1 Cor 3:11, “For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.

 

6.         Reconciliation is in it:

            Eph 2:14-16, “14 For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us;

 15 Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace; 16 And that he might reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross, having slain the enmity thereby:”

 

7          Christ is its head:

            Eph 1:22-23,

             “22 And hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church, 23 Which is his body, the fullness of him that filleth all in all.

            The Cemetery Road church of Christ will conduct a series of Bible studies June 19, 20, and 21.  The subject matter for the special study will be "The Challenges for the 21st Century"  Preaching during this special series will be Garreth L. Commentary by Garreth L. Clair

 

            The thoughts revealed to us in these six verses is surely encouraging,  the writer,  probably David,  states in clear terms his trust and confidence in the Lord God to always provide all things adequate for him regardless of the untoward circumstance,  even into the face of death itself.   Because of the writers confidence in God to provide adequately,  he indicate that he will dwell in the presence of the Lord God eternally,  whether in life or in death.

 

            What an encouraging thought to those of us who struggle daily with the problems, trials, and tribulations of this life.  Those of us that are children of God ought to feel as confident and encouraged as David in the day to day life that we live here on this earth.  Indeed,  and we should also be confident of the final outcome because we are promised eternal life and safe care by our Lord as was David.

 

Note the following Bible references:

2 Timothy  4:7-8

7          I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith:

8          Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.   (KJV)

 

Revelation  2:10

10        Do not be afraid of what you are about to suffer. I tell you, the devil will put some of you in prison to test you, and you will suffer persecution for ten days. Be faithful,  to death, and I will give you a crown of life.

John  10:27-30

27        My sheep know my voice; I know them, and they follow me.

28        I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one can snatch them out of my hand.

29        My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; no one can snatch them out of my Father's hand.

TWO WAYS  (Matthew  7:13-14)

 

13        Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat:

14        Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.   (KJV)

 

Commentary by Garreth L. Clair

 

            In these two verses is contained the truth about man's choices in the spiritual realm,  on the one hand is described the "broad way" of which God disapproves and on the other the "narrow way",  a lifestyle that God does delight in. 

            The 13th verse describes a false, crooked, perverse, evil way (i.e., lifestyle),  a way of life that is in rebellion against God, a way that is displeasing to God.  In this lifestyle the vast majority of the human family reside,  this is indicated by the phrase "many there be which go in thereat."

            The 14th verse describes the way that God would have everyone travel.  Many people do travel the "narrow way" that pleases God but the majority do not.  The "narrow way" indicates that there are few that travel the way God,  stated by the phrase in the text:  "few there be that find it."

 

Consider this:

 

            God wills that no person may perish in Gehenna (cf.  2 Peter  3:9;   "The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is long-suffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance."  (KJV)

 

Definition:

 

1067  Gehenna (gheh'-en-nah);   of Hebrew origin [1516 and 2011]; valley of (the son of) Hinnom, ge-henna (or Ge-Hinnom), a valley of Jerusalem, used (figuratively) as a name for the place (or state) of everlasting punishment:   KJV-- hell.  (from Strong's numbers)

 

HELL

            1. gehenna ^1067^ represents the Hebrew Ge-Hinnom (the valley of Tophet) and a corresponding Aramaic word; it is found twelve times in the NT, eleven of which are in the Synoptists, in every instance as uttered by the Lord Himself. He who says to his brother, Thou fool (see under FOOL), will be in danger of "the hell of fire," <Matt. 5:22>; it is better to pluck out (a metaphorical description of irrevocable law) an eye that causes its possessor to stumble, than that his "whole body be cast into hell," <v. 29>; similarly with the hand, <v. 30>; in <Matt. 18:8,9>, the admonitions are repeated, with an additional mention of the foot; here, too, the warning concerns the person himself (for which obviously the "body" stands in <chapt. 5>); in <v. 8>, "the eternal fire" is mentioned as the doom, the character of the region standing for the region itself, the two being combined in the phrase "the hell of fire," <v. 9>. To the passage in <Matt. 18>, that in <Mark 9:43-47>, is parallel; here to the word "hell" are applied the extended descriptions "the unquenchable fire" and "where their worm dieth not and the fire is not quenched."   (from Vine's Expository Dictionary of Biblical Words)

           Consider carefully your choices in life,  we each must travel one of the two ways described in Matthew 7:13, 14.  God would have us choose the narrow way not the broad way.  No one can make this choice for me I must make the choice myself,  dear friend make sure you choose wisely.

 

"AM I MY BROTHER'S KEEPER?"

 

            The statement for the heading of this article is a statement uttered by Cain (cf., Genesis 4:9) in response to God's question,  "where is Abel thy brother."  Cain had just killed his brother and the statement,  "Am I my brother's keeper" perhaps was  offered as a disclaimer by Cain to any knowledge of his brother or his status,  But Cain failed to understand,  God already knew where Abel was,  He simply sought an honest answer from Cain,  which did not come forth,  Cain had Lied to God.

 

CONSIDER THIS:

 

1.         Within the church of Christ there are many members,  we are an autonomous body instructed to worship,  and to serve God faithfully as brethren,  one of another,  note the following references:

Romans  12:3-5

3          For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith.

4          For as we have many members in one body, and all members have not the same office:

5          So we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another.  (KJV)

1 Corinthians  12:12-22

12        For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ.

13        For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.

14        For the body is not one member, but many.

15        If the foot shall say, Because I am not the hand, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body?

16        And if the ear shall say, Because I am not the eye, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body?

17        If the whole body were an eye, where were the hearing? If the whole were hearing, where were the smelling?

18        But now hath God set the members every one of them in the body, as it hath pleased him.

19        And if they were all one member, where were the body?

20        But now are they many members, yet but one body.

21        And the eye cannot say unto the hand, I have no need of thee: nor again the head to the feet, I have no need of you.

2.         In our relationship together in the church we are brethren.  Since we are brethren we have obligations to help one another overcome problems that we encounter with sin and the Devil.  The Word of God (i.e., the Scriptures) instruct us to help one another,  please note the following passage:

Galatians  6:1-2

1          Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted.

2          Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.  (KJV)

Hebrews  10:24

24        And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works:   (KJV)

 

            Therefore,  in our relationship together as brethren,  let us aid and encourage faithfulness in our relationship together.  We should be alert and active in helping weaker members to grow and stay on the narrow path.  We should never ignore or seek to avoid our obligations to one another -- remember,  God already knows where we are and what we are doing.

 

            Indeed,  we are in reality "our brothers keeper."  consequently let us never manifest an attitude toward a lost or wayward brother/sister (i.e., one who is dead spiritually -- a backslider),  like that of Cain,  "Am I my brother's keeper?"     glc

RELATIVE DEPRIVATION

            The concept that I want to discuss in this article has to do with  materialism.  The person that is overcome with the materialist philosophy and subscribes to it's  rudiments,  will find that the term adequately describes his/her preoccupation in life. 

 

DEFINING THE TERM

 

            "Relative Deprivation" defined must be accomplished through the definition of both words:

 

"Relative",  "Considered in comparison to or dependent on something else" (# 2).

 

"Deprivation"  "To keep from possessing or enjoying"

(deprive # 2).

Both definitions taken from "The American Heritage Dictionary", Third edition, 1994.

 

CONSIDER THIS:

 

            From the definition of the two words it is apparent that anyone may find that they are suffering from "relative deprivation."  This malady does not affect only the rich,  it can affect anyone,  regardless of their position on the economic ladder. 

 

ILLUSTRATION (from a sermon by Leonard White)

 

            "A young married couple that move into their first small apartment may soon find that they suffer from "relative deprivation."  They may soon find that there are others who live in larger apartments with two baths instead of one.  They may then work to afford the new  apartment with two baths.  Yet, alas, they soon find that some of their friends have bought a three bedroom house with two baths in a better neighborhood.  They again feel deprived and so they pursue the new dream, (i.e., they are feeling deprived again).  And so they finally are able to buy the three bedroom, two bath home only to discover in a short time that some in the neighborhood have a carport.  Again, these good people feel deprived.  They think, "If only we could get us one of those houses with a carport we would be finally satisfied."  And so they set out again to pursue their dream,  finally reaching a point in life so that they can buy that house with the carport.  But,  alas,  a short while after their acquisition of the house with the carport,  they see a nice house with a one car garage and a remote overhead door opener,  and on and on it goes.  You can see,  anyone, at any level on the economic ladder may feel that they are "deprived".  The concept of feeling deprived does not just affect the rich,  this problem may affect anyone, anywhere, at any time.  The root to the problem is dissatisfaction with what one has.  The onset of a dissatisfied mind is the beginning of the feeling that we describe as "relative deprivation."

 

DEFINING THE PROBLEM THAT

"RELATIVE DEPRIVATION"

CREATES FOR THE CHRISTIAN

 

            The Christian is encouraged  throughout the Bible to be content with whatever his circumstance is as he continually serves God.

 

1 Timothy  6:6-8

6          But godliness with contentment is great gain.

7          For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out.

8          And having food and raiment let us be therewith content.  (KJV)

 

Philippians  4:11

11        Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content.

 

Hebrews  13:5

5          Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.

 

CONSIDER THIS:

 

            In the three passages of Scripture listed,  notice the injunction to "be content."  Whenever the Christian allows the desire for things to hinder his service to the Lord,  he has become overcome with the pursuit of mammon,  Luke 16:13  "No servant can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon."  To become more involved in the pursuit of this world (i.e., things,  both concrete and abstract) than service to God is sinful,  cf. Matthew 6:33  "But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you"   (KJV).

 

THE CHRISTIAN  MUST BE CONTENT

BUT,

HE MUST NOT BE LAZY.

 

1 Timothy  5:8, “But if any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel.”

ASK A FRIEND TO ATTEND THE MEETING

            Nearly forty years ago a young man was invited to a gospel meeting by a friend.  During the meeting this young man came forward at the invitation song and became a Christian.  A short time after becoming a Christian this man taught several friends about Christ and some of them became Christians,  about a year later the man's wife was baptized into Christ as well.  Within this man's life children were born,  all of this man's children became Christians.

 

            This man began to teach and preach the gospel and within five years was preparing himself for full time located preaching.  This man began to preach the gospel full time in another state and brought many souls into contact with Christ,  many became Christians as a direct result of this man's efforts in the various congregations and gospel meetings that he has conducted throughout the country. 

 

            Today (i.e., 1998),  finds this man still doing full time preaching and spreading the gospel message. I wonder how many people have been taught and led to Christ by this good man?  perhaps hundreds even thousands.  The wonderful thing about this true story is that he will probably continue teaching and preaching the gospel for the remainder of his life,  only God in heaven knows how many more souls will be led to Christ by his efforts.

 

            This story is true,  the friend who wishes to remain anonymous assures me that this is a true account of the man he ask many years ago to attend a night of a gospel meeting with him.  A truly remarkable account of the effects of one invitation to a gospel meeting many years ago.

 

CONSIDER THIS:

 

            Everyone knows someone that needs to know Jesus Christ,  will you ask those you know to attend our up-coming gospel meeting?  they will thank you for the invitation.  You may never know how much good you have done if one of those people you invite becomes a Christian.  One thing you can know for sure,  like the true story herein,  your invitation may be to the benefit of hundreds not yet born.

 

"Invite someone to the meeting!"

 

REMEMBER THE FOLLOWING FACTS WITH SCRIPTURAL REFERENCE:

 

1.         If we cannot teach one ourselves,  surely we can invite  our prospects to the gospel meeting where they will be taught the truth: "Only hearers will understand and obey the gospel."

Acts 8:1-4

1          And Saul was consenting unto his death. And at that time there was a great persecution against the church which was at Jerusalem; and they were all scattered abroad throughout the regions of Judaea and Samaria, except the apostles.

2          And devout men carried Stephen to his burial, and made great lamentation over him.

3          As for Saul, he made havoc of the church, entering into every house, and haling men and women committed them to prison.

4          Therefore they that were scattered abroad went every where preaching the word.

 

2.         Paul instructed Timothy to teach others the truth that had been taught to him,  let us do this during the gospel meeting by bringing our friends to hear the gospel.

2 Timothy  2:1-2

1          Thou therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.

2          And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.

 

3.         There is no greater act of love toward another than to bring them to a location where they will have an opportunity to hear the gospel taught.

Galatians  6:10

10        As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith.

 

4.         If you love someone that needs Christ in their life,  whether friend or enemy,  bring them or encourage them to attend our gospel meeting.  This action on your part may break down their enmity, apathy,  disinterest,  stubbornness, or plain lack of interest on their part and cause them to become a child of God,  a simple New Testament Christian,  what a great possibility!

Matthew  5:43-44

43        Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbor, and hate thine enemy.

44        But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;

 

5.         We all know how we would like for others to treat us.  Since we do know how we want to be treated we ought to invite others (i.e., our acquaintances) to attend the gospel meting so that they too,  may become Christians.

Luke 6:31

31        And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise.

DO YOU NEED TO ATTEND

THE GOSPEL MEETING?

 

Perhaps you have been wondering if you need to attend our gospel meeting this month

 (i.e., JUNE 19-21)

 

The only way that one will be able to correctly determine the answer to the question  is by searching the Scriptures, NOTE THE FOLLOWING INSTRUCTIONS: 

cf.  2 Timothy  3:16-17,   "All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works."    

2 Timothy  2:15, "Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth."    

John  8:32,  "And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." The references cited show that truth can be attained only through examination of God's Written Word (i.e., the Bible).  Since our question affects our relationship to others in the Body of Christ (i.e., our spiritual relationship with God and other Christians) the answer will be determined by an appeal to the Scripture.  Notice the following relationships:

 

1.         If I am a faithful Christian I should attend the meeting because I need to continue in every good work 2 Corinthians  9:8,

8          And God is able to make all grace abound toward you; that ye, always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work:

Colossians  1:10-11,

10        That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God;

11        Strengthened with all might, according to his glorious power, unto all patience and longsuffering with joyfulness;  (KJV)

 

2.         If I am unfaithful I need to hear the gospel so that I may be encouraged to correct my unfaithfulness.  Only knowledge acquired from God's Word,  properly applied in my life will correct my unfaithfulness,

Proverbs  14:14-16,

14        The backslider in heart shall be filled with his own ways: and a good man shall be satisfied from himself.

15        The simple believeth every word: but the prudent man looketh well to his going.

16        A wise man feareth, and departeth from evil: but the fool rageth, and is confident.

Isaiah  55:6-7

6          Seek ye the LORD while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near:

7          Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the LORD, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.

Acts 8:21-22

21        Thou hast neither part nor lot in this matter: for thy heart is not right in the sight of God.

22        Repent therefore of this thy wickedness, and pray God, if perhaps the thought of thine heart may be forgiven thee.   (KJV)

 

3.         If you are not a Christian you need to be here for the meeting each service so that you can hear and learn whatever you need to know in order to become a Christian:  

John 8:31, 32,

31        Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed;

32        And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free (i.e., "FROM SIN").  (KJV).

 

CONCLUSION:

 

            Whatever your circumstance or relationship to God really is,  you need to attend every service of the gospel meeting if it is possible.  Whatever other things that you have to do will not give you as much joy and pleasure than you will gain by being among God's children and hearing God's Word discussed in its simplicity.

            Nearly forty years ago a young man was invited to a gospel meeting by a friend.  During the meeting this young man came forward at the invitation song and became a Christian.  A short time after becoming a Christian this man taught several friends about Christ and some of them became Christians,  about a year later the man's wife was baptized into Christ as well.  Within this man's life children were born,  all of this man's children became Christians.

 

            This man began to teach and preach the gospel and within five years was preparing himself for full time located preaching.  This man began to preach the gospel full time in another state and brought many souls into contact with Christ,  many became Christians as a direct result of this man's efforts in the various congregations and gospel meetings that he has conducted throughout the country. 

 

            Today (i.e., 1998),  finds this man still doing full time preaching and spreading the gospel message. I wonder how many people have been taught and led to Christ by this good man?  perhaps hundreds even thousands.  The wonderful thing about this true story is that he will probably continue teaching and preaching the gospel for the remainder of his life,  only God in heaven knows how many more souls will be led to Christ by his efforts.

 

            This story is true,  the friend who wishes to remain anonymous assures me that this is a true account of the man he ask many years ago to attend a night of a gospel meeting with him.  A truly remarkable account of the effects of one invitation to a gospel meeting many years ago.

 

CONSIDER THIS:

 

            Everyone knows someone that needs to know Jesus Christ,  will you ask those you know to attend our up-coming gospel meeting?  they will thank you for the invitation.  You may never know how much good you have done if one of those people you invite becomes a Christian.  One thing you can know for sure, like the true story herein,  your invitation may be to the benefit of hundreds not yet born.

 

"Invite someone to the meeting!"

 

REMEMBER THE FOLLOWING FACTS WITH SCRIPTURAL REFERENCE:

 

1.         If we cannot teach one ourselves,  surely we can invite  our prospects to the gospel meeting where they will be taught the truth: "Only hearers will understand and obey the gospel."

Acts 8:1-4

1          And Saul was consenting unto his death. And at that time there was a great persecution against the church which was at Jerusalem; and they were all scattered abroad throughout the regions of Judaea and Samaria, except the apostles.

2          And devout men carried Stephen to his burial, and made great lamentation over him.

3          As for Saul, he made havoc of the church, entering into every house, and haling men and women committed them to prison.

4          Therefore they that were scattered abroad went every where preaching the word.

 

2.         Paul instructed Timothy to teach others the truth that had been taught to him,  let us do this during the gospel meeting by bringing our friends to hear the gospel.

2 Timothy  2:1-2

1          Thou therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.

2          And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.

 

3.         There is no greater act of love toward another than to bring them to a location where they will have an opportunity to hear the gospel taught.

Galatians  6:10,

10        As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith.

 

4.         If you love someone that needs Christ in their life, whether friend or enemy,  bring them or encourage them to attend our gospel meeting.  This action on your part may break down their enmity, apathy,  disinterest,  stubbornness, or plain lack of interest on their part and cause them to become a child of God,  a simple New Testament Christian,  what a great possibility!

Matthew  5:43-44,

43        Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbor, and hate thine enemy.

44        But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;

 

5.         We all know how we would like for others to treat us.  Since we do know how we want to be treated we ought to invite others (i.e., our acquaintances) to attend the gospel meting so that they too,  may become Christians.

Luke 6:31,

31        And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise.

DO YOU NEED TO ATTEND

THE GOSPEL MEETING?

 

Perhaps you have been wondering if you need to attend our gospel meeting this month

 (i.e., JUNE 19-21).

 

The only way that one will be able to correctly determine the answer to the question  is by searching the Scriptures, NOTE THE FOLLOWING INSTRUCTIONS: 

cf.  2 Timothy  3:16-17,   "All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works."    

2 Timothy  2:15, "Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth."    

John  8:32,  "And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." The references cited show that truth can be attained only through examination of God's Written Word (i.e., the Bible).  Since our question affects our relationship to others in the Body of Christ (i.e., our spiritual relationship with God and other Christians) the answer will be determined by an appeal to the Scripture.  Notice the following relationships:

 

1.         If I am a faithful Christian I should attend the meeting because I need to continue in every good work     2 Corinthians  9:8,

8          And God is able to make all grace abound toward you; that ye, always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work:

Colossians  1:10-11,

10        That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God;

11        Strengthened with all might, according to his glorious power, unto all patience and longsuffering with joyfulness;  (KJV)

 

2.         If I am unfaithful I need to hear the gospel so that I may be encouraged to correct my unfaithfulness.  Only knowledge acquired from God's Word,  properly applied in my life will correct my unfaithfulness,

Proverbs  14:14-16,

14        The backslider in heart shall be filled with his own ways: and a good man shall be satisfied from himself.

15        The simple believeth every word: but the prudent man looketh well to his going.

16        A wise man feareth, and departeth from evil: but the fool rageth, and is confident.

Isaiah  55:6-7

6          Seek ye the LORD while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near:

7          Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the LORD, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.

Acts 8:21-22

21        Thou hast neither part nor lot in this matter: for thy heart is not right in the sight of God.

22        Repent therefore of this thy wickedness, and pray God, if perhaps the thought of thine heart may be forgiven thee.   (KJV)

 

3.         If you are not a Christian you need to be here for the meeting each service so that you can hear and learn whatever you need to know in order to become a Christian:  

John 8:31, 32,

31        Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed;

32        And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free (i.e., "FROM SIN").  (KJV).

 

CONCLUSION:

 

            Whatever your circumstance or relationship to God really is,  you need to attend every service of the gospel meeting if it is possible.  Whatever other things that you have to do will not give you as much joy and pleasure than you will gain by being among God's children and hearing God's Word discussed in its simplicity.

HISTORY OF THE CONGREGATION

AT 4840 CEMETERY ROAD

EARLY BEGINNINGS:

 

            On Friday September 6th, 1963 the congregation began a weeks meeting with Paul Williams in the American Legion Hall at 77 S. Franklin Street in Hilliard, Ohio.  David Roberts agreed to preach for the congregation on a part time basis while attending Ohio State University. The congregation began meeting regularly on Sunday morning,  Sunday night,  and Tuesday night at this location while seeking a more suitable site in Hilliard.

 

            In March of 1965 land was purchased on Cemetery Road for the purpose of building a meeting house.  In April 1965 the congregation moved into the Grange Hall in Hilliard, Ohio.  The congregation continued to meet at this location waiting for the construction of the meeting house at 4840 Cemetery Road.  In 1967 a contract was given to the Mason Construction Company to build the meeting house.  The meeting house was finished in 1968 and the congregation held its first service here in February, 1968.

 

            At the time the church moved into the new meeting house in 1968 the midweek service was rescheduled for Wednesday night,  the attendance at the time of the move to the new building was 54.  This was a truly joyful time for the membership.

CONCLUSION:

 

            As we reflect on the past 35 years of progress, we pray that the current membership will continue the history with zeal and personal dedication.  Our prayer is that we will always do those things individually and collectively that will please our Lord while we work to further the history of the congregation here on Cemetery Road. We earnestly pray for the proper love to abound toward God, between us as brethren, and toward our neighbor.  We understand that the Scripture so teaches this in the following verses:

 

Matthew  22:37-39,

37        Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.

38        This is the first and great commandment.

39        And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.

Luke 6:27-28,

27        But I say unto you which hear, Love your enemies, do good to them which hate you,

28        Bless them that curse you, and pray for them which despitefully use you.

Romans 12:9-10,

9          Let love be without dissimulation. Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good.

10        Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honor preferring one another;

"NOT ASHAMED OF THE GOSPEL"

 

            Occasionally we find ourselves in a situation where we must acknowledge the relationship that we have with Christ,  do we always do as we should in this matter?  or are we sometimes ashamed.  Apparently there were some in Paul's day who manifested this spirit also, (i.e., they were ashamed of the gospel).   In Paul's opening to the book of Romans he tells those in Rome that he is not ashamed of the gospel, 

cf.,  Romans  1:15-17,

15        So, as much as in me is, I am ready to preach the gospel to you that are at Rome also.

16        For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.

17        For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.   (KJV)

Not only does Paul state clearly that he is not ashamed of the gospel but he also describes the value of the gospel to others in the statement in verse 16,  "... for it is the power of God unto salvation to everyone that believeth." and he specifies both  "Jews and Greeks." 

 

CONSIDER THIS:

 

            The importance of the preaching (i.e., teaching) of the gospel cannot be over estimated,  as a result of the preached gospel men and women will hear and understand God's plan for the salvation of their soul from sin.  No action in this world is more important than sharing the gospel with another person,  they may respond by heading the message and obeying the gospel.  What a wonderful experience for anyone to enjoy,  the joy of seeing someone you have taught become a Christian.  Indeed, a child of God should never be ashamed of the gospel.

INCREASED KNOWLEDGE

BRINGS

INCREASED RESPONSIBILITIES

 

            One of the important by-products to study is increased knowledge regarding our relationship to God and to our fellow man. We are suggesting that increased knowledge is a good thing and that study is a worthy pursuit by any and all Christians,  cf.,  2 Tim 2:15,  "Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth."   The spiritually of each Christian increases as more and more spiritual information is placed into the brain as a result of study, hearing the Word of God expounded, etc.

 

OUR APPRECIATION OF OUR GOD

 

            As one engages in a profitable study of God's Word one is made aware of God and His greatness in many aspects. God is truly remarkable in that there is none like Him or any that comes anywhere close to Him in greatness pertaining to everything, cf., Gen 2:4. "This is the account of the heavens and the earth when they were created. When the LORD God made the earth and the heavens" (NIV)     Josh 2:10-1-2, "For we have heard how the LORD dried up the water of the Red sea for you, when ye came out of Egypt; and what ye did unto the two kings of the Amorites, that were on the other side Jordan, Sihon and Og, whom ye utterly destroyed. And as soon as we had heard these things, our hearts did melt, neither did there remain any more courage in any man, because of you: for the LORD your God, he is God in heaven above, and in earth beneath." 2 Sam 22:31-33, "As for God, his way is perfect; the word of the LORD is tried: he is a buckler to all them that trust in him. For who is God, save the LORD? and who is a rock, save our God? God is my strength and power: and he maketh my way perfect." (KJV) Our appreciation of our God is enhanced greatly as we learn more about Him through hearing and studying His Holy Word. We are therefore encouraged to place ourselves in a students position so that we may learn more from others as they teach God's Word, (e.g.,  gospel meetings,  special classes,  lecture programs, etc.) and we are encouraged to study more privately because of the benefits that we know will be gleaned thereby.   Peter the great apostle of Christ stated this truth at the close of his writings, 2 Pet 3:18, "But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen." (KJV)

Through study and the continued acquisition of knowledge we may someday have the complete confidence in God that the writer of the 23rd Psalm expresses in Ps 23:1-6, "The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.  Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever."

 

APPRECIATION OF OUR NEIGHBOR

 

            The greatest commandment according to our Lord is:   Matt 22:36-38, "Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?" Jesus replied: "'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.' This is the first and greatest commandment. The second greatest commandment according to our Lord is: Matt 22:39, "And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself." (NIV)

 

CONSIDER THIS, ALSO:

 

            According to Jesus we are to  "love our neighbor as ourselves." There is a great deal contained in this instruction by our Lord notice some of the consequence of loving our neighbor.

1.         If we love our neighbor we will always act charitably toward them in whatever human interaction we have with them.

 

2.         We will not lie to our neighbor but we will always be honest and truthful in our interactions with them.

 

3.         We will be the first to offer a helping hand or a prayer whenever they are suffering grief, or misfortune.

 

4.         Above all,  we will share the gospel message with our neighbor.  There is no greater expression of care for another than to share the gospel with them.  If they refuse to accept the gospel message their sin is on their own head.

 

5.         Invite your neighbors to worship God with you as you have opportunity in your conversations together.

 

6.         Always be a good example for them to observe, remember this, you may be the only example of a true Christian that they have to follow, don't blow it!

 

INCREASED RESPONSIBILITIES

 

            Jesus taught that increased knowledge brings about increased responsibility,  please note the following passages of Scripture:   Luke 12:48, "But he that knew not, and did commit things worthy of stripes, shall be beaten with few stripes. For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required: and to whom men have committed much, of him they will ask the more." (KJV) The parable of the talents recorded in Matthew 25:15-28 also indicate that the individual that possesses the greatest talents (abilities) will be responsible for more than those with less.  The important point in the parable of the talents though, is; each individual is to use whatever abilities they possess in the Lord's service.  If one has abilities and does not use them surely he is not fulfilling his responsibility to God or his neighbor.

 

           We will all be fulfilling our responsibility to God if, as we learn God's will we put it to practical use in our life.   From our study, it is apparent that when we learn more and more of God's Word we are required to put that new knowledge to good use, not only in our life but in the life of others around us.  It is evident that as we learn more of God's Word we will appreciate our relationship to God and our neighbors better.

WE KNOW WE ARE THE LORD’S CHURCH

FOR THE FOLLOWING REASONS

 

1.         The Bible is our sole rule of faith and practice

 

2.         We tell sinners what to do to be saved from sin in the words of inspired men

 

3.         Every element of our worship is set forth in the New Testament

 

4.         All the work we engage in is set forth in the New Testament

 

5.         All Christians are encouraged to live according to Divine instructions

            (i.e. according to the New Testament instruction)

 

WE KNOW WE ARE THE LORD’S CHURCH

 

INTRODUCTION:

 

            The New Testament teaches that there is one church, one body, that belongs to Jesus Christ, cf.

Matthew 16:18, “And I also say unto thee, that thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.” (ASV)

1 Corinthians 10:17, “seeing that we, who are many, are one bread, one body: for we all partake of the one bread.” 1 Corinthians 12:12-13, “12 For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of the body, being many, are one body; so also is Christ. 13 For in one Spirit were we all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether bond or free; and were all made to drink of one Spirit.” (ASV)

Ephesians 2:16, “and might reconcile them both in one body unto God through the cross, having slain the enmity thereby:” (ASV)

Ephesians 4:4, “(There is) one body, and one Spirit, even as also ye were called in one hope of your calling;” (ASV)

Colossians 3:15, “And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to the which also ye were called in one body; and be ye thankful.” (ASV)

 

WE KNOW WE ARE THE LORD’S CHURCH BECAUSE

 

I.          THE BIBLE IS OUR ONLY RULE OF FAITH AND PRACTICE:

 

            1.         Human denominations do not use the Bible, “ONLY”

                        A.        Denominations use creed books – “an addition”

                        B.        Human denominations use human “rules of faith” – Party statements and doctrines formulated by men

 

2.                  The Lord’s church uses God’s Written Word exclusively

A.                 Human creeds, doctrines of men, and humanly devised ideas have no place in our worship, work, or organizational structure

B.                 The Bible alone is sufficient for the faith, worship, work, and government of the church.

                                    2 Timothy 3:16-17, “16 Every scripture inspired of God (is) also profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for instruction which is in righteousness. 17 That the man of God may be complete, furnished completely unto every good work.” (ASV)               

                       1 Peter 4:16, “but if (a man suffer) as a Christian, let him not be ashamed; but let him glorify God in this name.” (ASV)

 

II.        WE TELL SINNERS WHAT TO DO TO BE SAVED FROM SIN IN THE WORDS OF INSPIRED MEN:

 

            1.         We teach the alien that they are to:

                        A.        Hear the gospel

                                    Romans 10:17, “So belief (cometh) of hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ.”

                        B.        Believe the gospel

                                    Mark 16:15-16, “15 And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world and preach the gospel to the whole creation. 16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that disbelieveth shall be condemned.” (ASV)

                        C.        Repent of their sins

                                    Acts 2:38, “And Peter (said) unto them, Repent ye, and be baptized every one of you in th name of Jesus Christ unto the remission of your sins; and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” (ASV)

                        D.        Confess Jesus Christ with the mouth

                                    Romans 10:9-10, “9 because if thou shalt confess with thy mouth Jesus (as) Lord, and shalt believe in thy heart that God raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved: 10 for with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.” (ASV)

                        E.         Be baptized

                                    Acts 2:38, “And Peter (said) unto them, Repent ye, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ unto the remission of your sins; and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” (ASV)           

 

2.            We teach the backslider that  they are to:

            A.        Acknowledge their sin

                        Acts 8:24, “And Simon answered and said, Pray ye for me to the Lord, that none of the things which ye have spoken come upon me.” (ASV)

            B.        Repent of the sins

                        Acts 8:21-22, “21 Thou hast neither part nor lot in this matter: for thy heart is not right before God. 22 Repent therefore of this thy wickedness, and pray the Lord, if perhaps the thought of thy heart shall be forgiven thee.” (ASV)

            C.        Pray for forgiveness

                        Acts 8:24, “And Simon answered and said, Pray ye for me to the Lord, that none of the things which ye have spoken come upon me.” (ASV)

 

3.            Teach the Christian that if he/she has sinned a private sin that he should pray for forgiveness in a private place:

            Matthew 6:6, “But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thine inner chamber, and having shut thy door, pray to thy Father who is in secret, and thy Father who seeth in secret shall recompense thee.” (ASV)


III.       EACH ELEMENT OF OUR WORSHIP IS SET FORTH IN THE NEW TESTAMENT:

 

1.                  The New Testament teaches that all Christians assembled on the first day of each week:

            Acts 20:7, “And upon the first day of the week, when we were gathered together to break    bread, Paul discoursed with them, intending to depart on the morrow; and prolonged his speech until midnight.” (ASV)

            Hebrews 10:24-25, “24 and let us consider one another to provoke unto love and good works; 25 not forsaking our own assembling together, as the custom of some is, but

exhorting (one another); and so much the more, as ye see the day drawing nigh.” (ASV)

 

2.                  The New Testament Pattern for worship consists of five actions on the part of assembled Christians:

           

A.                 Teaching God’s Word;

            Acts 20:7, “And upon the first day of the week, when we were gathered together to break bread, Paul discoursed with them, intending to depart on the morrow; and   prolonged his speech until midnight.” (ASV)

            Acts 11:26, “and when he had found him, he brought him unto Antioch. And it        came to pass, that even for a whole year they were gathered together with the            church, and taught much people, and that the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch.” (ASV)

 

B.                 Singing;

            Romans 15:9, “and that the Gentiles might glorify God for his mercy; as it is written, Therefore will I give praise unto thee among the Gentiles, And sing unto thy name.”

            1 Corinthians 14:15, “What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray       with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the            understanding also. (ASV)

            Hebrews 2:12, “saying, I will declare thy name unto my brethren, In the midst of            the congregation will I sing thy praise.” (ASV)

            Colossians 3:16, “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly; in all wisdom   teaching and admonishing one another with psalms (and) hymns (and) spiritual     songs, singing with grace in your hearts unto God.” (ASV)

 

C.                 Praying;

            1 Corinthians 14:15, “What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray       with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the            understanding also.” (ASV)

            1 Thessalonians 5:17, “pray without ceasing;” (ASV)

            1 Timothy 2:8, “I desire therefore that the men pray in every place, lifting up          holy hands, without wrath and disputing.” (ASV)

            James 5:16, “Confess therefore your sins one to another, and pray one for   another, that ye may be healed. The supplication of a righteous man availeth much in its working.”

 

D.                 Partake of the Lord’s Supper;

            1 Corinthians 11:23-26, “23 For I received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, that the Lord Jesus in the night in which he was betrayed took bread;

            24 and when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, This is my body, which is    for you: this do in remembrance of me. 25 In like manner also the cup, after supper,       saying, This cup is the new covenant in my blood: this do, as often as ye drink (it), in remembrance of me. 26 For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink the cup, ye           proclaim the Lord's death till he come.” (ASV) --- See also Matthew 16:16 – In memory of Jesus Christ! – See also Matthew 26:27-28

 

E.         Giving into a common treasury;

            1 Corinthians 16:1-2, “1 Now concerning the collection for the saints, as I gave       order to the churches of Galatia, so also do ye. 2 Upon the first day of the week let each one of you lay by him in store, as he may prosper, that no collections be made when I come.” (ASV)

 

IV.       ALL THE WORK WE ENGAGE IN IS SET FORTH IN THE NEW TESTAMENT:

 

            1.         Evangelism;

                        Matthew 28:18-20, “18 And Jesus came to them and spake unto them, saying, All authority hath been given unto me in heaven and on earth. 19 Go ye therefore, and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them into the name of the Father and of the  Son and of the Holy Spirit: 20 teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I commanded you: and lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world.” (ASV)

                        2 Timothy 2:2, “And the things which thou hast heard from me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.”

 

3.                  Edifying the congregation;

            Romans 14:19, “So then let us follow after things which make for peace, and things whereby we may edify one another.” (ASV)

            1 Thessalonians 5:11, “Wherefore exhort one another, and build each other up, even as also ye do.” (ASV)

            1 Corinthians 14:12, “So also ye, since ye are zealous of spiritual (gifts), seek that ye may abound unto the edifying of the church.” (ASV)

            1 Corinthians 14:26, “What is it then, brethren? When ye come together, each one hath a psalm, hath a teaching, hath a revelation, hath a tongue, hath an interpretation. Let all   things be done unto edifying.” (ASV)

            Ephesians 4:12, “for the perfecting of the saints, unto the work of ministering, unto the building up of the body of Christ:” (ASV)

            Ephesians 4:16, “from whom all the body fitly framed and knit together through that which every joint supplieth, according to the working in (due) measure of each several part, maketh the increase of the body unto the building up of itself in love.” (ASV)


V.         ALL CHRISTIANS ARE ENCOURAGED TO LIVE ACCORDING TO GOD’S INSTRUCTIONS VIA THE HOLY SCRIPTURES:

 

1.                  Love our neighbors;

            Matthew 22:36-39, “36 Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law?

            37 And he said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. 38 This is the great and first commandment. 39 And a second like (unto it) is this, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.” (ASV)

 

A.                 Consider their afflictions

B.                 Consider their physical and spiritual needs

C.                 Always be considerate toward everyone

D.                 Always encourage others to follow Christ

 

2.                  Live a life that exhibits Christ-likeness;

            2 Peter 1:4, “whereby he hath granted unto us his precious and exceeding great      promises; that through these ye may become partakers of the divine nature, having             escaped from the corruption that is in the world by lust.” (ASV)

 

3.         Always be honest;

            Romans 12:17, Render to no man evil for evil. Take thought for things honorable in the sight of all men.” (ASV)

 

4.         Treat your spouse with love and dignity;

            Ephesians 5:25, “Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself up for it;” (ASV)

            1 Peter 3:7, “Ye husbands, in like manner, dwell with (your wives) according to knowledge, giving honor unto the woman, as unto the weaker vessel, as being also joint-heirs of the grace of life; to the end that your prayers be not hindered.” (ASV)

 

5.         Bring up your children according to God’s instruction

            (i.e. Follow God’s Family Values system);

            Ephesians 6:4, “And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but nurture them in the chastening and admonition of the Lord.” (ASV)

 

6.         Keep a clean reputation;

                        Proverbs 22:1, “A (good) name is rather to be chosen than great riches, (And) loving favor rather than silver and gold.” (ASV)

 

CONCLUSION:

 

            The Biblical proof offered in this study are those things that the church of Christ here on Cemetery Road endeavor to do both individually and collectively as Christians. Since these things are essential to correctness before God, we are therefore walking correctly (i.e. “We Know That We Are the Lord’s Church”). God has always approved of those in the previous dispensations that keep His instructions (i.e. His Commands). These facts are documented for the membership of the Lord’s Church so that we may be encouraged and edified over our relationship with Jehovah, Christ, and the Holy Spirit knowing that we are following their way.

“Let us work together to change Hilliard and the world;

Making them a better place to live.”

 

                   The greatest contribution that the population of Franklin County and the greater Hilliard population is to change their present direction and turn them in the direction that the Bible prescribes. It is not enough to agree that many of the residents are good, moral, ethical people and that the bad apples are few. Good, moral, ethical people will be lost if we do not change their attitude toward their current sinful practices that condemn them. Notice the following passage in – cf. Matthew 7:21-23, “21 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father who is in heaven.

22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy by thy name, and by thy name cast out demons, and by thy name do many mighty works? 23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.” (ASV)

 

            Those of us that make up the church here on Cemetery Road must continue to work diligently toward the goal of converting everyone in this region and beyond that is not a member of the Lord’s Church (cf. Matthew 16:18). We must not be content while the masses of this community and the region are caught in the grips of deceit by false religions, atheism, agnosticism, humanism, materialism, and other ism’s. NO, we must reach out to the lost ones everywhere.

 

            There is room in the Kingdom of God (i.e., the Lord’s Church) for everyone who will come to Him on His Terms – cf., Hebrews 5:8-9, “8 though he was a Son, yet learned obedience by the things which he suffered;

9 and having been made perfect, he became unto all them that obey him the author of eternal salvation;” (ASV)

 

            The Lord’s Church is here in the midst of many thousands who are dying in sin, surely we can reach some of them with the truth that can make them free from their sin – cf., John 8:32-36, “32 and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. 33 They answered unto him, We are Abraham's seed, and have never yet been in bondage to any man: how sayest thou, Ye shall be made free? 34 Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Every one that committeth sin is the bondservant of sin. 35 And the bondservant abideth not in the house for ever: the son abideth for ever. 36 If therefore the Son shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.” (ASV)

 

ADDED NOTES:

1.         The Bible is clear in its teaching regarding our duty to the lost and undone in this world – cf.,

            Matthew 28:18-20, “18 And Jesus came to them and spake unto them, saying, All authority hath been given unto me in heaven and on earth. 19 Go ye therefore, and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them into the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit: 20 teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I commanded you: and lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world.” (ASV)

A DESIRE TO GROW

 

INTRODUCTION:

 

            Every congregation that I have ever been privileged to work with as the preacher has expressed the desire to grow numerically. This is good but other things are just as important and ought to be considered also. Not only should each congregation have a desire to grow in numbers but each church ought to desire to grow spiritually as well. One thing for sure, a congregation in its plans and desires must not do one good work while ignoring other works of equal importance. The religious leaders (i.e. leaders of the Jews) had a problem of this very nature as Luke points out – cf. Luke 11:42, “But woe unto you Pharisees! for ye tithe mint and rue and every herb, and pass over justice and the love of God: but these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.” (ASV)

 

CORRECT MOTIVES:

 

            Whenever any decision by the congregation is made regarding programs and objectives that will increase the membership it is well to remember the statement by Paul – cf. Colossians 3:17, “And whatsoever ye do, in word or in deed, (do) all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.” (ASV)

This statement by Paul encourages disciples to make sure that the Lord approves any action engaged in by the church. Regardless of the apparent good that a suggested program might do to bring in more numbers to the assemblies, if it is unauthorized by the Lord it must be rejected. Our motives in seeking greater numbers must be pure and scriptural, the increase in the size of the membership is good but if we work purely for selfish reasons our labors will be unacceptable - cf. 1 Corinthians 1:29-31, “29 that no flesh should glory before God.

30 But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who was made unto us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification, and redemption: 31 that, according as it is written, He that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord.

 

            May each Christian put forth maximum effort to build up the membership, remember though, growth consists in more than numbers alone. Real growth consists in numbers, in spirituality, and in maturity. Growth is a desirable concept for the congregation but growth without proper direction and motives cannot be successful. Each congregation may grow but it should grow in all areas noted in our study. As Peter encouraged the Christians to do in – cf. 2 Peter 3:18, “But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him (be) the glory both now and for ever. Amen.” (ASV) Whenever a congregation is growing it ought to be evident that the membership is growing numbers, in spirituality, and in maturity. The Lord is pleased whenever a church is growing, as it should. We surely have a desire to please our Lord, don’t we? May we each contribute of our time, money, and effort so that the church will grow as our Lord and Master would have it grow.

LESSONS FROM MAR'S HILL

 

            If allowed, this article can serve as a short class on personal evangelism and self-maturation. The dept of God’s Word continues to amaze me. No matter how many times one reads the same passage, if honest, he will always find something to improve his understanding. The Word of God cannot be mastered, it must master. Such is the case with Paul’s message on Mar’s Hill. In writing, preaching, teaching, and personal study. We have read and studied in dept, Paul’s sermon. Yet, it was not until this past week that the following realizations hit me.

 

NOTICE THREE THINGS PAUL DID:

 

1.         In the first place, Paul started at the religious point where he found his listeners. The audience surrounded Paul was full of Epicurean and Stoic philosophers who were curious at all times to hear something new. They were people who were religious, or superstitious, to a false concept. The residents of Athens were so concerned that they might offend a god, by not recognizing him, that they built an altar; To the Unknown God. One will notice, it is at this exact point that Paul begins his message (Acts 17:22-23) The same observation may be made of Peter in Acts 2. It was not necessary for him to begin with proof that God existed, they already believed in deity. He needed to direct their belief in the right direction.

            So, lesson number one is this: Start where the listener is ready to start. In personal evangelism, or missionary work, or pulpit work, one should start where he finds his listeners.

 

2.         Secondly, Paul did not try to teach his audience the entire Word of God in one setting. He began with a discourse on the first principles (Reminiscent of 1 Corinthians 15:1-5), leaving other things to follow (v 32), and yet he led some of his audience to belief (the third point to follow). He began by explaining that the Unknown God, is the one true God who created and cares for men )v 22-29). Within this context, he explains that it is man’s duty to search for and find Him (v 27). Then, Paul explained that man must repent (v 30) because there is a day set aside when all must appear before the Creator (31a). The basis of this judgment will be the righteousness that comes through Jesus, a man proven to all by His resurrection (v 31b). Therefore, the job of the evangelist, in whatever form he takes, is to take the gospel to the world and make disciples of them leading them to belief in the Son of God (Mark 16:15-16; Matt 28:19) baptizing those that believe (Matt 28:19). If this cannot be done, all other discourse will prove futile. It does not matter what one believes bout the kingdom, the Lord’s Supper, the resurrection on the last day, etc. if he is lost. It was after baptism (Matt 28:19-20) that Jesus mentioned teaching the believers all things.

 

3.         Conclusion, Paul’s last lesson is this:

No matter what the discussion with an unbeliever, the goal must be belief (Acts 17:30-34). The teacher is not there to win an argument, to debate, or to enter into a theological discussion. When applied to self-maturation, the lessons are similar. (Paul did take time to remind the Corinthians of these.) And finally, everything studied, learned, and applied must be governed by and based on belief in the Son of God. (John 16:13).

PERSONAL WORK

Editorial ,,,

 

            One of the important considerations to congregational growth is physical numbers is the efforts that the church puts forth in the area of evangelism. Personal evangelism us the dedicated effort of the current membership individually and collectively to bring into the church new members and old members that are no longer attending.

 

PROCESS AND TIMING:

 

            Many times the congregation’s leaders set about to teach the community by planning and implanting a personal work/visitation program. Such programs as the planned effort is probably the best way to involve the whole congregation in an attempt to stimulate interest and physical growth. There is never a bad time to implement a planned work effort by the church, the Winter months in the North though, is not the most expedient time because of snow, ice, and extreme cold. Consequently, Spring, Summer, and Fall will be the best time for an all out effort to establish a personal work program for the church here.

 

THE NEED TRULY DOES EXIST:

 

            That the need is pressing cannot be denied, the church of the Lord has shown very little growth in the past 25 years. This lack of membership growth must be curtailed and the only right way to stop it is to encourage the untaught, the unconverted, and bring back those that formerly attended here regularly. The possibilities are staggering in view of the great number of prospects, as Jesus said to His disciples while He traversed the area of Palestine – cf.  Matthew 9:36-38, “36 But when he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion for them, because they were distressed and scattered, as sheep not having a shepherd. 37 Then saith he unto his disciples, The harvest indeed is plenteous, but the laborers are few. 38 Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he send forth laborers into his harvest.” (ASV)

 

            As we read the passage above we can put ourselves in a similar position as we look about us. The numbers of unconverted people is astronomical. The numbers of people that do not attend religious services is so large that if we could reach 1/10% of those in the City of Hilliard the building could not hold them. The need for workers in God’s service is truly great, the church here in Hilliard is making an every effort to reach out and encourage the unconverted to come in an examine the “Truth that can make them free” from sin (John 8:32). You see, there is no freedom from sin without the “TRUTH.”

 

CONCLUSION:

 

            Each congregation has, as part of its work program the responsibility to evangelize the world to extent of its ability – cf. “1 Timothy 3:15, “but if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how men ought to behave themselves in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.” (ASV)

Acts 8:4, “They therefore that were scattered abroad, went about preaching the word.” (ASV)

2 Timothy 2:2, “And the things which thou hast heard from me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.” (ASV)

Ephesians 4:12, “for the perfecting of the saints, unto the work of ministering, unto the building up of the body of Christ:” (ASV)

 

            THE CONGREGATION IS CURRENTLY INVOLVED IN TWO PROGRAMS OF PERSONAL WORK. Please join us in our efforts at either of the organized programs or possibly you can join us in both efforts, one on the 3rd Tuesday of each month at 7:00 PM and the other, each Thursday at 5:30 PM.  WHY BE A PERSONAL WORKER?

 

            Some of the benefits of being a personal worker are as follows:

 

1.         It is commanded by our Lord:

            Mark 16:15-16, “15 And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to the whole creation. 16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that disbelieveth shall be condemned.” (ASV)

            The apostle Paul also taught this during his ministry,

            2 Timothy 2:2, “And the things which thou hast heard from me among many witnesses, the same    commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.”

 

2.         The early Christians practiced it, even whenever they were under severe persecution:

            Acts 8:1-4, “1 And Saul was consenting unto his death. And there arose on that day a great persecution against the church which was in Jerusalem; and they were all scattered abroad throughout the region of Judaea and Samaria, except the apostles. 2 And devout men buried Stephen, and made great lamentation over him. 3 But Saul laid waste the church, entering into every house, and dragging men and women committed them to prison. 4 They therefore that were scattered abroad, went about preaching the word.”

3.         To put God and His work first in our lives (i.e. to get our own priorities straight):

            Matthew 6:33, “But seek ye first his kingdom, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.” (ASV)

 

4.         So that we may “grow in grace and knowledge.”

            2 Peter 3:18, “But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him (be) he glory both now and for ever. Amen.” (ASV)

 

5.         So that sinners may hear, understand, and obey, and be converted:

            2 Timothy 2:2, “And the things which thou hast heard from me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.”

PREACHING THAT GLORIFIES CHRIST

 

            In recent years it has come to my attention that we do not preach enough sermons that glorify Christ.  My preaching has been for the most part through the years centered on obedience to the commands of Christ rather than on the person of Christ.  I have always acknowledged that my preaching ought to be both positive and negative,  that preaching ought to contain warnings and encouragement to the audience,  that both doctrine and teaching are one and the same,  that the Word of God is our rule of right, etc., often in recent years I have wondered if my teaching has been sufficiently inclusive of elements that glorify Christ - I pray it has been.  The material that I plan to present in this issue of "Hilliard Bulletin" will be devoted to glorifying Christ. 

 

            The material in this issue of the magazine reflects my present course of sermon preparation and my attitude toward glorifying Jesus Christ from the pulpit as I am privileged.

 

            Included in these studies will be specific uses of sermons that I have preached throughout the years of my ministry. - rearranged to emphasize and glorify Christ.  Each sermon has been utilized in such a manner that Christ is the central theme of the lesson presentation.  The list of recent sermons presented with Christ as the central theme are:

 

1.         THE PRODIGAL SON:   Luke 15:11-24

 

11        And he said, A certain man had two sons:

12        And the younger of them said to his father, Father, give me the portion of goods that falleth to me. And he divided unto them his living.

13        And not many days after the younger son gathered all together, and took his journey into a far country, and there wasted his substance with riotous living.

14        And when he had spent all, there arose a mighty famine in that land; and he began to be in want.

15        And he went and joined himself to a citizen of that country; and he sent him into his fields to feed swine.

16        And he would fain have filled his belly with the husks that the swine did eat: and no man gave unto him.

17        And when he came to himself, he said, How many hired servants of my father's have bread enough and to spare, and I perish with hunger!

18        I will arise and go to my father, and will say unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and before thee,

19        And am no more worthy to be called thy son: make me as one of thy hired servants.

20        And he arose, and came to his father. But when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and had compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him.

21        And the son said unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and in thy sight, and am no more worthy to be called thy son.

22        But the father said to his servants, Bring forth the best robe, and put it on him; and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet:

23        And bring hither the fatted calf, and kill it; and let us eat, and be merry:

24        For this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found. And they began to be merry.   (KJV)

 

            This study is presented as a basis for establishing the longsuffering of Christ.  (i.e., The Godhead,  including Christ,  are longsuffering toward their erring children - "... not willing that any perish, but that all might come to repent and return.)  Included in this parable of Jesus is encouragement for the erring child,  whatever the offense,  to return to Him and be welcomed back with gladness by the Lord.

 

"THE SINNER IS ALWAYS WELCOME HOME."

"COME HOME!  ERRING CHILDREN."

 

2.         THE POWER OF EXAMPLE: 

 

Matthew  16:24, “Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.”

 

John 13:15, “For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you.”   (KJV)

 

            This lesson is utilized to establish the importance of following the example that Jesus Christ set for us when He sojourned here on earth for approximately 33 years,   Christ left us an example of goodness that we will never be able to equal.  The perfectly good example that Jesus left for us to follow is surely the kind of example for all Christians to incorporate into their lifestyle.

 

            In our life as a Christian we will, ourselves, be an example for others to follow.  In our lives,  lived before others we will encourage them to be either righteous or unrighteous by our actions and deeds.  Christians ought to follow Christ's example, because there is no better example in the annals of history,  either secular or spiritual. To follow an example other than that lived by Christ and recorded in the Bible will encourage wickedness. Many young people today and perhaps more middle age and older people than I am aware of are allowing sport's figures or Hollywood types to influence them in the kind of life that they are living.   No non-Christian should ever be our example and we should never encourage our children or grand-children to live lives like these non-Christians are living. "CHRIST" is the only hero, the only personage, the one that we should strive to be like and encourage others to be like HIM also.

 

'FOLLOW CHRIST'S EXAMPLE IN ALL THINGS."

 

3.         THE UNCHANGEABLE LORD:

 

Hebrews  13:8, “Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.”

 

Psalms  102:27, “But thou art the same, and thy years shall have no end”.  (KJV)

 

            This lesson encourages confidence in the Christian's hope.  The Lord is unchanging,  therefore all of His promises and all of His statements recorded in the Holy Scripture are true.   Whatever the Lord has promised He is able to do - my confidence in His ability to raise me from the dead,  someday, is secure. Since Christ's promises are true I am encouraged to seek them even with a greater desire and expectation of receiving them personally when He comes again.

 

"CHRIST'S PROMISES ARE UNCHANGEABLE,

I CAN REST ASSURED THAT CHRIST WILL FULFILL HIS COMMITMENT TO ME."

"CHRIST WILL SAVE ME I KNOW."

 

4.         CHRIST'S SEVEN LAST UTTERANCES FROM THE CROSS:

 

            A.        Luke 23:34, “Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And the  parted his raiment, and cast lots.

 

"FORGIVENESS FOR HIS MURDERERS."

 

            B.        Luke 23:43, “And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise.

 

"GRANTS PEACE TO A CRUCIFIED CRIMINAL."

 

            C.        John 19:27, “Then saith he to the disciple, Behold thy mother! And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home.

 

A SON'S LOVE AND CONCERN

FOR HIS MOTHER."

 

            D.        Matt 27:46, “And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?

BUT CONTINUES TO OBEY HIM."

 

            E.         John 19:28, “After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, saith , I thirst. (KJV,  reference)

            F.         John 19:30, “When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.”

5.         THE LORD'S SUPPER:

 

            Matthew  26:26-28,

26 And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed it, and brake it, and gave it to the disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is my body.

27 And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of it;

28 For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.

 

            Mark 14:22-25

            22 And as they did eat, Jesus took bread, and blessed, and brake it, and gave to them, and said, Take,        eat: this is my body.

            23 And he took the cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them: and they all drank of it.

            24 And he said unto them, This is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many.

            25 Verily I say unto you, I will drink no more of the fruit of the vine, until that day that I drink it new in the kingdom of God.

 

1 Corinthians  10:16, “The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ?

 

1 Corinthians  11:23-34,

23 For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, That the Lord Jesus the same night in which he was betrayed took bread:

24 And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me.

25 After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me.

26 For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord's death till he come.

27 Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord, unworthy, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord.

28 But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup.

29 For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord's body.

30 For this cause many are weak and sickly among you, and many sleep.

31 For if we would judge ourselves, we should not be judged.

32 But when we are judged, we are chastened of the Lord, that we should not be condemned with the world.

33 Wherefore, my brethren, when ye come together to eat, tarry one for another.

34 And if any man hunger, let him eat at home; that ye come not together unto condemnation. And the rest will I set in order when I come.   (KJV)

 

            The four New Testament references above establish the pattern for the Lord's Supper.  The Divine pattern is Christ centered for it is He that established it (cf. Matthew 6:26 and Mark 14:22)  for a continuous memorial of His death till He returns again  (cf. 1 Corinthians 11:23-26).

 

            The Lord's Supper is to be taken each first day of the week (cf. Acts 20:7),  it is to be entered into with thought and consideration recognizing that the Lord's Supper is a memorial to Christ's death.

 

"THE LORD'S SUPPER IS A CONTINUOUS MEMORIAL

TO THE CHRISTIAN OF CHRIST'S DEATH."

 

COME TOGETHER ON THE FIRST DAY OF EACH WEEK TO PARTAKE OF THE BREAD AND THE FRUIT OF THE VINE,  YOU WILL PROCLAIM HIS DEATH TILL HE RETURNS BY SO DOING.

 

6.         WHAT SHALL I DO WITH JESUS?

           

Matthew  27:22; "Pilate saith unto them, What shall I do then with Jesus which is called Christ? They all say unto him, Let him be crucified."

 

            Nearly twenty Centuries ago Pilate uttered the question,  "what shall I do with Jesus..?."  men and women of accountable age have had to answer the same question in their life ever sine.  How have you personally responded to the question that is the most important that will ever occur in your lifetime?,  "..what shall I do with Jesus.."  In this phase of our study let us examine some of the ramifications of this question.

 

A.        The question is a personal question, a question that each person will have to answer for themselves.  I have often desired the ability to answer the question for some in my own family but I know that I cannot, they must answer the question just as I have answered it in my life.  Jesus has stated it very clearly, "...he that is not with me is against me..." cf., Matthew 12:30

 

B.        How shall I react to his offer of salvation from sin? Matthew  11:28-30;

28        Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

29        Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.  

30        For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

Revelation  3:20,

20        Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.   (KJV)

 

C.        How shall I react to his promise of an eternal paradise?  John 14:1-6;

1          Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me.

2          In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.

3          And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.

4          And whither I go ye know, and the way ye know.

5          Thomas saith unto him, Lord, we know not whither thou goest; and how can we know the way?

6          Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

 

            What will you do with Jesus, His offer of salvation from sin, and His offer of an eternal paradise?  What will your reaction to these things be?  Will you not come to Jesus Christ on His terms,  believing and obeying His instruction so that your sins will be forgiven,  today.

 

7.         THE WONDERFUL SAVIOR

 

            In the Book of Isaiah,  9:5 we read, in reference to the Christ,  "His name shall be called wonderful.."  Have you ever considered the possible meanings that can be attributed to that word as it is applied to Jesus Christ?  In this phase of the study let us consider this word,  "WONDERFUL",  as it applies to Christ.

 

A.        He is wonderful in offering Himself for my sins,  Hebrews 10:10-12.

 

B.        He is wonderful in His perfect obedience

            Hebrews 5:8, 9.

 

C.        He is wonderful in His love for me

            John 15:13;  Romans 5:6-8.

 

D.        He is wonderful in His nature - GOD

            Colossians 2:9.

 

E.         He is wonderful in His work

            Matthew 8:2; 8:5-13; 8:14, 15; 9:2;

            Matthew 8:28-24, etc.

 

F.         He is wonderful in His example

            1 Peter 2:21, 22.

 

G.        He is wonderful in His triumph over Satan

            1 Corinthians 15:20-23.

 

Perhaps we could extend this list much further but these few points show us that we do,  truly have a wonderful savior.

 

8.         SERVING CHRIST DAY BY DAY:

 

            As Christians we are to serve Christ continually.  How may we serve Him day after day?  This is the study for this eight point.

 

A.        We may serve Christ by teaching the gospel to everyone that we meet whether we are a preacher,  elder,  deacon, or a member with only the title,  Christian. 

cf.,  1 Timothy  3:2

2          A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behavior, given to hospitality, apt to teach;

1 Timothy  4:10-11

10        For therefore we both labor and suffer reproach, because we trust in the living God, who is the Saviour of all men, specially of those that believe.

11        These things command and teach.

2 Timothy 2:2

2         And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.

2 Timothy  2:24

24        And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient,

Titus 2:4

4          That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children,

 

B.        We may serve Christ day by day through living a faithful and honorable life before everyone.  Christ admonishes His disciples to be "the salt of the earth and the light of the world...

"cf., Matthew  5:13-16

13        Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.

14        Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.

15        Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.

16        Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.  (KJV)

 

C.        We may serve Christ day by day as we care for the widows and orphans,  those sick and afflicted, etc.   

Galatians  6:10;

10        As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith.

James 1:27,

27        Pure religion and undefiled before God and the

Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.

 

D.        We may serve Christ day by day as we raise our children up according to His teaching.  As we fill our role in the family unit,  as we contribute to unity in the family unit,  etc. Ephesians  6:1-4;

1          Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right.

2          Honor thy father and mother; (which is the first commandment with promise;)

3          That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth.

4          And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.

Colossians  3:18-21,

18        Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as it is fit in the Lord.

19        Husbands, love your wives, and be not bitter against them.

20        Children, obey your parents in all things: for this is well pleasing unto the Lord.

21        Fathers, provoke not your children to anger, lest they be discouraged.

 

E.         We may serve Christ day by day as we encourage others to worship with us at the appointed assembly times.

 

            This list could also be extended, think of those things that you as an individual may do daily in your service to the Lord and do them!

----- GOD IS STILL IN CHARGE -----

 

            Today we hear a lot about how the world is going to pieces, how the country is headed for destruction, that the end is near, and we observe despair on every hand, has God given up on all humanity? The problems that are occurring throughout the civilized world today are those calamities, trials, and tribulations that are common to all men, everywhere – cf. 1 Corinthians 10:13, “There hath no temptation taken you but such as man can bear: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation make also the way of escape, that ye may be able to endure it.” (ASV)

 

SELF INFLICTED MISERY:

 

            We have all heard the adage; “A person’s worst enemy is often himself” That statement is often true, we have been given responsibility for ourselves. Remember this, and our choices determine the quality of life that we enjoy or the condition of despair we find ourselves in. We determine our status while we live here on the earth, if we want the good life we can choose it but if we do not choose the good life we have chosen the bad. God says it is this way - cf. Genesis 4:3. God spoke to Cain after he had been rejected by God and told him “If you will do well you will be accepted.” Cain had the choice, obey God and be accepted or disobey God and be rejected, Cain choose to disobey God, Cain created his own problems. NOTE;  James 4:17, “To him therefore that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.” (ASV) Here again man is given a choice, he may chose to do good or reject the choice and do evil, God has given to unto us the capacity to make a good decision between good and evil if ewe will. Whenever we reject the good we have caused our own disaster.

 

DO NOT BLAME GOD:

 

            Many people are quick to blame God for their misfortune whenever a problem of any kind arises. Recently, I talked to an intelligent man about the Lord and about church attendance. This man was upset about his father’s short life span after he retired at 65, It seems that his father worked at a very hard occupation and two months after he retired he died of a heart attack. The problem of death may be attributed to the Devil’s successful temptation of Eve in the Garden of Eden, cf. Genesis 3:14, “And Jehovah God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, cursed art thou above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life:” (ASV)

1 Corinthians 15:21-26, “21 For since by man (came) death, by man (came) also the resurrection of the dead.

22 For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive.

23 But each in his own order: Christ the firstfruits; then they that are Christ's, at his coming.

24 Then (cometh) the end, when he shall deliver up the kingdom to God, even the Father; when he shall have abolished all rule and all authority and power.

25 For he must reign, till he hath put all his enemies under his feet.

26 The last enemy that shall be abolished is death.” (ASV)

 

            Since the Devil is responsible for death, it is a misplacing of blame to suggest that it is God’s fault, death will come upon everyone. Indeed, death comes to both the good and the evil at an undetermined time.

 

LIVE FOREVER:

 

            Remember this, Jesus Christ has risen from the tomb and is coming back the second time to redeem the saved (i.e. Christians). The Christian may live the good life hear and reap everlasting life, with joy that is beyond explanation. The Christian will physically die but he/she will be resurrected to eternal life at the last day: cf. Acts 24:15, “having hope toward God, which these also themselves look for, that there shall be a resurrection both of the just and unjust.” (ASV)

1 Peter 1:3-7, “3 Blessed (be) the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to his great mercy begat us again unto a living hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,

4 unto an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you,

5 who by the power of God are guarded through faith unto a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.

6 Wherein ye greatly rejoice, though now for a little while, if need be, ye have been put to grief in manifold trials, 7 that the proof of your faith, (being) more precious than gold that perisheth though it is proved by fire, may be found unto praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ:” (ASV)

THE CHRISTIAN HAS HOPE

 

Ephesians 2:12, “that ye were at that time separate from Christ, alienated from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of the promise, having no hope and without God in the world.” (ASV)

 

Ephesians 4:4, “(There is) one body, and one Spirit, even as also ye were called in one hope of your calling;”

 

Colossians 1:27, “to whom God was pleased to make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory:” (ASV)

 

Titus 2:2, “that aged men be temperate, grave, sober-minded, sound in faith, in love, in patience:’ (ASV)

 

Titus 2:13, “looking for the blessed hope and appearing of the glory of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ;” (ASV)

 

Titus 3:7, “that, being justified by his grace, we might be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.

 

Hebrews 6:18-19, “18 that by two immutable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we may have a strong encouragement, who have fled for refuge to lay hold of the hope set before us:

19 which we have as an anchor of the soul, (a hope) both sure and stedfast and entering into that which is within the veil;” (ASV)

I CANNOT LIVE THE LIFE

 

Recently it has come to my obvious to me that many in our society do not understand the value system of true Christianity (i.e. true religion). I am not sure what has created this situation, I simply have detected that it does exist with many people that I have approached in recent months. Many of these people have no idea of the Christian’s philosophy. Ideals, lifestyle, and are themselves caught up in discouragement, unhappiness, and indecision with life in general. Many people in current society subscribe to the following philosophy; “If I do nothing, I will have no further problems – If I stay where I am I will be no worse off than I am.” The sad part about those that possess this attitude is, this attitude, when applied to spiritual situations creates an impossible obstacle for the person to overcome when they are confronted with the gospel. You see, the gospel requires that the person possessed with this philosophy will find the challenge of the gospel more than they are willing to personally accept.

 

            Many times we talk to and occasionally discuss (i.e. in Bible classes) with those we describe here. We soon find out that they are unwilling to consider anything other than their own conclusions about life, family, and  religion. Most people are unwilling to make the life changes that God requires of them through the conversion process – such as Hebrews 5:8-9, “8 though he was a Son, yet learned obedience by the things which he suffered; 9 and having been made perfect, he became unto all them that obey him the author of eternal salvation;” (ASV) Many people that possess this disposition feel that the Biblical standard requires too much change, they are unwilling to consider such a drastic change of life; Paul deals with this attitude well in

Romans 6:1-13 – Please note the passage – “1 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? 2 God forbid. We who died to sin, how shall we any longer live therein? 3 Or are ye ignorant that all we who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were buried therefore with him through baptism unto death: that like as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we also might walk in newness of life. 5 For if we have become united with (him) in the likeness of his death, we shall be also (in the likeness) of his resurrection; 6 knowing this, that our old man was crucified with (him), that the body of sin might be done away, that so we should no longer be in bondage to sin; 7 for he that hath died is justified from sin. 8 But if we died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him; 9 knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death no more hath dominion over him. 10 For the death that he died, he died unto sin once: but the life that he liveth, he liveth unto God. 11 Even so reckon ye also yourselves to be dead unto sin, but alive unto God in Christ Jesus. 12 Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey the lusts thereof: 13 neither present your members unto sin (as) instruments of unrighteousness; but present yourselves unto God, as alive from the dead, and your members (as) instruments of righteousness unto God.” (ASV)

 

WE NEED UNDERSTANDING AND PATIENCE:

            In helping these people come to accept Christ and make the conscious decision to change we need to exercise patience and long suffering, we should do as Paul instructed Timothy – cf.  2 Timothy 4:1-2, “1 I charge (thee) in the sight of God, and of Christ Jesus, who shall judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and his kingdom: 2 preach the word; be urgent in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching.” (ASV)

 

            We must first convince them that others fail too, that everyone makes mistakes but that we must learn that just because we make a mistake, does not mean we are a failure; we must repent and start anew – cf. Galatians 6:1-2, “Brethren, even if a man be overtaken in any trespass, ye who are spiritual, restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness; looking to thyself, lest thou also be tempted.

2 Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.” (ASV)

 

EMPHASISE THE CHRISTIAN’S HOPE:

 

            Teach this person that there is more to life than is obvious to man in the world, there is the Christian’s hope of heaven. The Christian is looking beyond this present world and sees something exceedingly precious and beautiful – cf. Romans 2:7, “to them that by patience in well-doing seek for glory and honor and incorruption, eternal life:”

2 Corinthians 4:17-18, “For our light affliction, which is for the moment, worketh for us more and more exceedingly an eternal weight of glory; 18 while we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.” (ASV)

Hebrews 11:10, “for he looked for the city which hath the foundations, whose builder and maker is God.”

We must teach this person that God has made allowances for his children who fall from grace (i.e. backslide) – cf.  Acts 8:22-24, “22 Repent therefore of this thy wickedness, and pray the Lord, if perhaps the thought of thy heart shall be forgiven thee. 23 For I see that thou art in the gall of bitterness and in the bond of iniquity.

24 And Simon answered and said, Pray ye for me to the Lord, that none of the things which ye have spoken come upon me.” (ASV)

1 Corinthians 10:13, “There hath no temptation taken you but such as man can bear: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation make also the way of escape, that ye may be able to endure it.” (ASV)

1 John 1:9-10, “9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.”

 

CONCLUSION:

              We may not convert many people with this formula but we may convert some. The Lord has instructed us that we are to “sow the good sees” and He will “give the increase,” - cf., 1 Corinthians 3:5-7, “5 What then is Apollos? and what is Paul? Ministers through whom ye believed; and each as the Lord gave to him. 6 I planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase. 7 So then neither is he that planteth anything, neither he that watereth; but God that giveth the increase.” (ASV)

 

REMEMBER THIS FACT:

              There are many people that are in the world. Many of those in the world do not know us nor do they understand our motives. Because of this we must continue to approach everyone with the patience and understand that ought to characterize every Christian while they work at personal evangelizing with others. May we never become discouraged in our efforts to convert the lost – cf. Matthew 28:18-20, “18 And Jesus came to them and spake unto them, saying, All authority hath been given unto me in heaven and on earth. 19 Go ye therefore, and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them into the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit: 20 teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I commanded you: and lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world.” (ASV

GOSPEL MEETING NOTES:

           The day classes, “HOW WE GOT THE BIBLE” went well. The material was good and the teacher (i.e. Allen Jones from Florence, KY) did a splendid job of presenting his material. The attendance for the meeting was good.

----- CONFIDENCE IN GOD -----

 

            Today in our world many people have lost confidence in the God of the Bible. This situation has arisen over a long period of time and is a result of bad press given to God by many authors and by the media because the conduct of some that profess to represent Him has been evil and hypocritical.

 

THEY DO NOT REPRESENT GOD!

 

            In my memory I have seen the evil actions of some men and women create an evil influence over other men's view of God.  Examples to follow:

 

1.                  Sinclair Lewis (1885-1951), gained

International fame for his novels attacking the weaknesses he saw in American society.  Lewis Penned the Book, Elmer Gantry in 1927 that satirizes religious hypocrisy and bigotry in the Midwest. The Book was later made into a movie that influenced thousands perhaps millions to believe that preachers and Christians in general were mostly hypocrites. This book and the movie of the same name, in my opinion were the beginning of a decline in morality and ethics that today is shameful throughout American Society in general. It is not true that most Christians are hypocritical, it has been my experience that most true Christians are devout, honorable, pure, and good, as the following Biblical references attest,

 Acts 13:5, "But the Jews incited the God-fearing women of high standing and the leading men of the city. They stirred up persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and expelled them from their region." Acts 17:4, "Some of the Jews were persuaded and joined Paul and Silas, as did a large number of devout Greeks and not a few prominent women." -- Phil 4:8, "Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable-- if anything is excellent or praiseworthy-- think about such things." -- 1 Tim 5:22, "Do not be hasty in the laying on of hands, and do not share in the sins of others. Keep yourself pure." -- James 3:17, "But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere."  Most of the true Christians that I interact with in the world today are imitators of the Divine Nature; therefore they are not hypocrites!

 

2.         There is a long  list of individuals that proved themselves to be enemies of the

"TRUTH" (i.e., God's Written Word), that have indeed done a great disservice to the cause of Christ because of their wickedness. Even though some of these individuals have made an effort to correct their crimes, the damage to the cause of Christ cannot be underestimated.  The individual that goes about to deceive, defraud, steal, commit adultery, engage in drunkenness, and other crimes against God and man cannot seriously be consider a representative of the true God, can he? I find it to be a most slanderous act to cast upon God and all true Christians such aspersions or to suggest that these evil traits are characteristics of the true God or of truly faithful Christians cf., Gal 5:19-21,

19        Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,

20        Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,

21        Envyings, murders, drunkenness

revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God. (KJV) We find in God's Written Word that these types of sins are not new today. In five of the seven Churches of Asia many of these sins were to be found. The writer required of them that were guilty to repent or be lost (i.e., lost in Gehenna - The lake of fire) and suggested that the faithful ones should continue to be faithful. Please read Revelation 2:1-3:22 to establish these facts. God is pure and completely perfect in every way, consequently one should not be influenced by those that are evil to doubt Him. cf., Exod 23:2, "Thou shalt not follow a multitude to do evil;"

 

KINGDOM CITIZENS

 

            One of the important facets to being a Christian is duty or doing the works of God. There are times whenever it appears that most Christians have no interest in doing the works of God. As we know various religious denominations teach that salvation from sin is entirely by faith only, this view of salvation from sin is without Scriptural support but many of us in the Lord's Church act as though we have accepted the doctrine, at least in part. I conclude that many have accepted it because so many will become a Christian then does nothing in God's service thereafter. Work is an important part of the Christians direction to maturity. No Christian can mature in the faith that will not involve themselves in the works of God, some of the works are:

 

1.                  Assemble, Heb 10:25, "not forsaking our own assembling together, as the custom

of some is, but exhorting (one another); and so much the more, as ye see the day drawing nigh."

 

2.                  Keep our body and mind pure, Rom 12:1, "I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of

God, to present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, (which is) your spiritual service."

Acts 2:40, "And with many other words he testified, and exhorted them, saying, Save yourselves from this crooked generation." (ASV)

 

3.         Recognize our role as we serve God,

Rom 12:3-8,

3          For I say, through the grace that was given me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but so to think as to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to each man a measure of faith.

4          For even as we have many members in one body, and all the members have not the same office:

5          so we, who are many, are one body in Christ, and severally members one of another.

6          And having gifts differing according to the grace that was given to us, whether prophecy, (let us prophesy) according to the proportion of our faith;

7          or ministry, (let us give ourselves) to our ministry; or he that teacheth, to his teaching;

8          or he that exhorteth, to his exhorting: he that giveth, (let him do it) with liberality; he that ruleth, with diligence; he that showeth mercy, with cheerfulness.

 

4.         Love others without hypocrisy,

Rom 12:9-10,

9          Let love be without hypocrisy. Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good.

10        In love of the brethren be tenderly affectioned one to another; in honor preferring one another;

Gal 6:10,

10                "So then, as we have opportunity, let us

work that which is good toward all men, and especially toward them that are of the household of the faith." (ASV)

 

5.         Let us pattern our life after Paul or after Christ's example, 1 Cor 11:1,

"Be ye imitators of me, even as I also am of Christ." (ASV)

 

6.         Add the seven Christian virtues,

2 Pet 1:4-8,

4          by which have been given to us exceedingly great and precious promises, that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.

5          But also for this very reason, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue, to virtue knowledge,

6          to knowledge self-control, to self-control perseverance, to perseverance godliness,

7          to godliness brotherly kindness, and to brotherly kindness love.

8                    For if these things are yours and abound,

you will be neither barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

 

7.         Determine to live a faithful life until you die, Rev 2:10,

"Fear not the things which thou art about to

suffer: behold, the devil is about to cast some of you into prison, that ye may be tried; and ye shall have tribulation ten days. Be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee the crown of life." (ASV)

A WEEKLY MEMORIAL

 

            The Lord's Supper was instituted by Christ on the night of his betrayal. "He took bread, blessed it, broke it, gave to his disciples and told them to eat. In like manner he took the cup, blessed it and told the disciples to drink of it" (Mark 14:22, 23). In this action He was showing the disciples how to partake and revealing something of the nature of the memorial. They were to observe it after the kingdom had been established (Luke 22:29, 30).

 

            The Lord's Supper originated in the mind of Christ. No mere man conceived the idea. No group of men proposed it as a monument. It is something that man would never have suggested. What man would ever have thought of a simple supper as a memorial institution? It bears upon it the very imprints of the mind of Christ.

 

            The fact that the Lord's Supper originated in the mind of Christ shows that it is no trivial act. Nothing trivial or insignificant ever originated in the mind of Christ. Anyone that would make light of the memorial supper is making light of something that came from the mind of Jesus Christ. He who neglects the observance of the memorial is not neglecting a human memorial but a Divine one. He who takes carelessly or thoughtlessly is not despising man but Christ.

 

            Do you observe this significant memorial? This was the last command Christ gave to his disciples before his death. "If a man love me, he will keep my words" (John 14:23). "For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments" (1 John 5:3).

 

LAST MONTH IN 1998

 

            December is our last opportunity this year to get things done in 1998. If you have something in your life that needs to be completed during 1998 you have but a few days to get it done. Life is somewhat like the passing of a year; the Spring is the best time then comes the middle of the year and finally the end of the year. If you are living in the end of the year (i.e., you are an elderly person), you do not have as much time as you had in your youth -- now is the time to take care of unfinished or incomplete projects.

 

CONSIDER THIS:

If you are not a faithful Christian you may not have much life left to be or become one, therefore you should make the decision to serve Christ today cf., Heb 4:9-11, "There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God. -- For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his.  Let us labor therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief." (KJV)
