----- WELCOME -----
This is the first issue of 1998. This is also the first month that the current editor has had the privilege of preparing, printing, and distributing the HILLIARD BULLETIN. I do pray that the effort that I shall put forth here will be read and considered by those in the congregation here and in whatever place the HILLIARD BULLETIN will go.
This is the first month that Barbara and I have had the honor and privilege of working with the congregation as your preacher. We will do our very best to help in whatever way that becomes expedient in our relationship together with all of you that make up the church here.
The HILLIARD BULLETIN will be presented once each month with the hope that we will be able to encourage study by the use of articles and suggestions. Most of the writing will be by the editor. I will use good material as I deem it to be of value in the growth process of the church here.
If you have suggestions for a subject that you desire to study or use as material for a Bible study let the editor know, he may be able to put together a study or an article that will accomplish what you want. Feel free to make suggestions.

TEXT:
Hebrews 13:1-3
1 Let brotherly love continue.
2 Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.
3 Remember them that are in bonds, as bound with them; and them which suffer adversity, as being yourselves also in the body. (KJV)
DEFINING “BROTHERLY LOVE"
The love of brothers (or sisters) for each other; the love of fellow Christians for one another, all being children of the same Father in a special sense. Occasionally the New Testament uses the word brother to refer simply to another human being, whether a Christian or not <Matt. 25:40>, or to one's fellow countryman <Rom. 9:3>. Usually, however, it is used of a fellow believer in Christ. This is true of all places where the concept of brotherly love, or brotherly kindness, appears.
In the Old Testament, Israelites were taught not to hate their brothers: "You shall not hate your brother in your heart... but you shall love your neighbor as yourself" <Lev. 19:17-18>. This emphasis is continued and is made even more positive in the New Testament. Believers are exhorted to "be kindly affectionate to one another with brotherly love" <Rom. 12:10>, to "let brotherly love continue" <Heb. 13:1>, to "love the brotherhood" <1 Pet. 2:17>, and to "love as brothers" <1 Pet. 3:8>.
Brotherly love is to be the badge, or hallmark, of a Christian <John 13:35>. The Greek word for brotherly love <Philadelphia> appears as the name of a city in the province of Asia mentioned in the Book of Revelation <Rev. 1:11>.

DISCUSSION: IN THIS STUDY WE WILL CONSIDER
I. HAZARD'S OF IT: That it is often strained is implied in our text. Many things may hinder its growth and extinguish its light for others.
1. Diversity of talents. Those with greater talents may become proud, or those with lesser talents `may become envious, crushing the holy affection.
2. Diversity of emphasis. Though we all read the same Bible, some may lay greater emphasis on one point, causing stress.
3. Simple misunderstandings. These too arise among the very sincerest of brethren, causing severe strain on brotherly love.
4. Diverse ethnic, educational qualifications, environmental influences, etc
These differences often cause strain among brethren, yet the Holy Spirit instructs us in
Ephesians 4:2-3, "With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love; Endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace."
II. THE MAINTENANCE OF IT:
1. It is the duty of each Christian to develop a deep and abiding love for other Christians.
2. By considering Divine love first:
I John 4:19-21,
“19 We love him, because he first loved us.
20 If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen? 21 And this commandment have we from him, That he who loveth God love his brother also.
3. From a pure heart fervently:
1 Peter 1:22, "Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently:"
4. Without Hypocrisy:
Romans 12:9-10, “9 Let love be without dissimulation. Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good. 10 Be kindly affectionate one to another with brotherly love; in honor preferring one another;
5. Because love is of God:
I John 4:7-11, “7 Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God. 8 He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love. 9 In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him 10 Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. 11 Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another.
III. THE MANIFESTATION OF IT:
Brotherly love, when genuine will find expression in deeds, it will bear fruit.
1. In hospitality:
Hebrews 13:2, "Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unawares."
2. In sympathy toward the misfortunes of others:
A. In sin: Galatians 6:1-2, “1 Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted. 2 Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.
B. In hardship, sickness, or need: Galatians 6:10, "As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith."
James 1:27, "Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world."
C. In joy toward the successful: Romans 12:15, 16, “15 Rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep with them that weep. 16 Be of the same mind one toward another. Mind not high things, but condescend to men of low estate. Be not wise in your own conceits.
D. In benevolence toward all:
CONSIDER THIS: True character does not always appear on the surface: some people we know may be better than they first appear to be.
Lot is an example: Consider his actions in Genesis chapters 18 and 19 - then read the statement about Lot by Peter: 2 Peter 2:6-9, “6 And turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorra into ashes condemned them with an overthrow, making them an example unto those that after should live ungodly; 7 And delivered just Lot, vexed with the filthy conversation of the wicked: 8 (For that righteous man dwelling among them, in seeing and hearing, vexed his righteous soul from day to day with their unlawful deeds;) 9 The Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptations, and to reserve the unjust unto the day of judgment to be punished: (KJV)
CONCLUSION:
Christians should develop their love for one another, this is surely one failing of many Christians today. Everywhere we look today, brethren are dividing and forming cliques to further their own ends – such things are sinful and are contrary to the spirit of love as taught in God’s Word.
Brotherly love is not concerned with self but is concerned with the good of others, everywhere; this ought to be our preoccupation today and every day.

AND TIME GOES ON
Each day that we live we will occupy our time doing something. We would be ill advised to spend too much time observing media programming Each day that we live here in the world we are continually exposed to all that goes on in our world, The good, the bad, the disgusting, are shown to us via the electronic media. Nothing happens in our world that we do not know about almost immediately. For some strange reason the electronic media and the printed media present, for the most part, the awful, evil, side of events that occur. Perhaps these media moguls are convinced that sensationalism is the way to build ratings for their shows, apparently, they believe horror, mayhem, sex, and violence sells anything.
As we consider these things let us always be aware of the potential danger that exposure to this type of media exposure may bring us. It is not too great an exaggeration to suggest that whatever we allow ourselves to imbibe within our mind will eventually influence our character.
Read Matthew 15:17-20
17 Do not ye yet understand, that whatsoever entereth in at the mouth goeth into the belly, and is cast out into the draught?
18 But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart; and they defile the man.
19 For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies:
20 These are the things which defile a man: but to eat with unwashen hands defileth not a man. We are all products of whatever we allow to enter our heart (i.e., seat of intellect) through our eyes and through our hearing. Because our character is established by whatever we see and hear, we must be very careful of those things that we hear and see.that is designed for our viewing, it will surely have an effect upon our character eventually. There may be some programs that will not adversely effect our character -- we need to find these programs and avoid the bad ones.
Time goes on! That is a fact for all of us to deal with day after day. Dealing with spare time may become a problem for those who have an abundance of it. Remember this: nothing is valuable if it is does not increase our faith in God, Christ, and spiritual things in general;
Ecclesiastes 10:18, “18 By slothfulness the roof sinketh in; and through idleness of the hands the house leaketh.” (ASV)
1 Timothy 4:13, "Till I come, give attendance to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine." GLC,

A NOTE FROM THE PREACHER
In our relationship together here in the Family of God, if there is anything that we can do to aid you in your life as a Christian, please let us know. We, as part of the Family here on Cemetery Road want to be as helpful and useful in God's service as possible in whatever way we can.
REMEMBER THIS:
We are brethren, working together in the greatest effort that has ever been available to humanity.
1 Corinthians 12:12-24
12 For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of the body, being many, are one body; so also is Christ.
13 For in one Spirit were we all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether bond or free; and were all made to drink of one Spirit.
14 For the body is not one member, but many.
15 If the foot shall say, Because I am not the hand, I am not of the body; it is not therefore not of the body.
16 And if the ear shall say, Because I am not the eye, I am not of the body; it is not therefore not of the body.
17 If the whole body were an eye, where were the hearing? If the whole were hearing, where were the smelling?
18 But now hath God set the members each one of them in the body, even as it pleased him.
19 And if they were all one member, where were the body?
20 But now they are many members, but one body.
21 And the eye cannot say to the hand, I have no need of thee: or again the head to the feet, I have no need of you.
22 Nay, much rather, those members of the body which seem to be more feeble are necessary:
23 and those (parts) of the body, which we think to be less honorable, upon these we bestow more abundant honor; and our uncomely (parts) have more abundant comeliness;
24 whereas our comely (parts) have no need: but God tempered the body together, giving more abundant honor to that (part) which lacked; “(ASV)
WHY SO MANY DO NOT COME TO GOD; THEY RESIST HIM:
Do you think it is impossible to resist God? Since God created the universe, it would seem that the question is foolish yet the Bible teaches that man has resisted God's goodness toward him from the very beginning. Please notice the following verses of Scripture about man's capacity to resist God:
Acts 7:51
51 Ye stiffnecked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, ye do always resist the Holy Ghost: as your fathers did, so do ye.
2 Timothy 3:8
8 Now as Jannes and Jambres withstood Moses, so do these also resist the truth: men of corrupt minds, reprobate concerning the faith.
2 Chronicles 30:8
8 Now be ye not stiffnecked, as your fathers were, but yield yourselves unto the LORD, and enter into his sanctuary, which he hath sanctified for ever: and serve the LORD your God, that the fierceness of his wrath may turn away from you. (KJV)
Acts 7:51
51 Ye stiffnecked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, ye do always resist the Holy Ghost: as your fathers did, so do ye. (KJV)
Jeremiah 8:5-6
5 Why then is this people of Jerusalem slidden back by a perpetual backsliding? they hold fast deceit, they refuse to return.
6 I hearkened and heard, but they spake not aright: no man repented him of his wickedness, saying, What have I done? every one turned to his course, as the horse rusheth into the battle. (KJV)
Hosea 11:7
7 And my people are bent to backsliding from me: though they called them to the most High, none at all would exalt him.

THERE ARE NO TRUE ATHEISTS
Whenever the time comes for man to die, he begins to wonder if he is ready to pass from this life into that other state. The person who faces death will finally look seriously at his status with God. The person with a proper perspective on eternal things will make some changes in his life at the last minute if possible. It is a fact, no one wants to exist forever in hell fire (i.e. Gehenna) if he can do something about it. The only time one can make any changes in his life (i.e. his relationship to God) is while he/she is alive here in this world. Indeed, we have about 70 years (i.e. average age) to make some decision about our future (i.e. after death). In regard to this situation we are discussing here notice the following Biblical story about two men.
Luke 16:19-31, “19 Now there was a certain rich man, and he was clothed in purple and fine linen, faring sumptuously every day:
20 and a certain beggar named Lazarus was laid at his gate, full of sores,
21 and desiring to be fed with the (crumbs) that fell from the rich man's table; yea, even the dogs came and licked his sores.
22 And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and that he was carried away by the angels into Abraham's bosom: and the rich man also died, and was buried.
23 And in Hades he lifted up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.
24 And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am in anguish in this flame.
25 But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and Lazarus in like manner evil things: but now here he is comforted, and thou art in anguish.
26 And besides all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed, that they that would pass from hence to you may not be able, and that none may cross over from thence to us.
27 And he said, I pray thee therefore, father, that thou wouldest send him to my father's house;
28 for I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment.
29 But Abraham saith, They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them.
30 And he said, Nay, father Abraham: but if one go to them from the dead, they will repent.
31 And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, if one rise from the dead.” (ASV)
CONSIDER THIS:
Take time to serve God while you live!
Do it today so that you can enjoy life for a while before the end comes.
REMEMBER; there are no atheist, in HELL

THE GOOD LIFE
DEFINING THE SUBJECT:
The "good life" has many definitions; some people consider the acquisition of material wealth as the good life. Other people consider the "good life" to consist in personal acclaim or prestige. There are still other people who consider a combination of the two previous matters as the "good life" and yet there is still another lifestyle that is superior to all the three previously discussed. The most important of all accomplishments is to attain the correct relationship with our Creator, this truly does constitute the "good life" -- let us explore this idea further in this article:
1. Man is alienated from God, consider the following:
Romans 5:10,
10 For if, when we were God's enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life!
2 Corinthians 5:17-19,
17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold all things are become new.
18 And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation;
19 To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation.
Colossians 1:20-21,
20 And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven.
21 And you, that were sometime alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now hath he reconciled (KJV)
2. God has provided essential grace so that man might be reconciled to God, God providing an acceptable sacrifice (i.e., Christ):
Romans 3:23-26, “23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
24 and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.
25 God presented him as a sacrifice of atonement, through faith in his blood. He did this to demonstrate his justice, because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished- 26 he did it to demonstrate his justice at the present time, so as to be just and the one who justifies those who have faith in Jesus.
Ephesians 1:6-7, “6 To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved. 7 In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;”
1 Timothy 1:14-15, “14 And the grace of our Lord was exceeding abundant with faith and love which is in Christ Jesus. 15 This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief. KJV)
3. Obedience completes the reconciliation process:
Titus 2:11-14, “11 For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men,
12 Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world; 13 Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Savior Jesus Christ; 14 Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works. (KJV)
CONCLUSION:
From our study, it is apparent, the "good life" (i.e., the good relationship to God) is acquired as a result of God's "un-merited favor" toward us first and foremost. Without God's initiative toward man in sending His Son, Jesus Christ to atone for our sin, reconciliation would have been impossible.
In addition to that which God has done for us that we could not do for ourselves (i.e., He provided grace), we too, are to participate in establishing that correct relationship with God, we are to obey His instructions (see point # 3 above). To obey God's instructions to acquire salvation from sin (i.e., the "good life") we are to:
A. Hear the gospel, Romans 10:17
B. Believe the gospel, Mark 16:15, 16
C. Repent of sins, Luke 13:3; Acts 2:38
D. Be Baptized, Matthew 28:18-20; Acts 2:38
CONSIDER THIS, TOO:
The "good life" is available to you and me as a result of God's grace and our obedience, one cannot underestimate the importance of having that good relationship with God that can really be considered the "good life". If you are looking for a direction in your life, salvation from sin, or if you have a desire to live "the good life" please examine this option. No one can make this decision for another person, everyone must personally choose to live the good life or reject it.
THE ULTIMATE DECISION IS INDIVIDUAL.

"HARDLY A DAY PASSES."
Garreth L. Clair
Our life consists in all of the places, all of the people, and all of the events that we have experienced in time. Many of us have many memories of past days and events, some of our memories are sweet and some of them are not. Yet, as we live and move and have our being this side of the grave we cannot but utter, “Hardly a day passes,
1. That I don’t think of all that God has done for me. Yes, I know that He has made it possible for my sins to be forgiven. If God had not provided His grace to me I could not have been saved from my sin regardless of all my human effort; John 3:16, "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life." (KJV) Indeed, I have obeyed the Lord's instructions, Hebrews 5:8, 9 "Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered; And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him;" And for all this, "hardly a day passes" that I don't think of God's goodness toward me.
2. That I don't thank of my father and mother who have passed on to be with the Lord. There is really no way that I can know whether they were acceptable to our Lord and are ready for the resurrection and assignment, but "hardly a day passes that” I don't think of them."
3. That I don't think of my two brothers who have died and are now awaiting the judgment. I remember them in past times when we were young and innocent. I also remember the harshness of life as we grew into adulthood and began to experience the pull of the world and all of the enticements that call us away from God. I remember too that they both became Christians, and that they were faithful and full of zeal at one time. "Hardly a day passes" that I do not remember them with a wonder about their eternal state...”
4. That I don't think of my one brother that is left on this side of life. I know that our Lord Jesus Christ will save everyone Acts 10:34-35, "Then Peter opened his mouth, and said, of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons: But in every nation he that feareth him, and worketh righteousness, is accepted with him." (KJV) that will come to Him on His terms, I do hope that my only remaining brother will live a faithful and true life in God's service. "Hardly a day passes” that I do not think of him and pray for him."
5. That I don't think of those with whom I have labored over the years as evangelist. I often think of the brethren in Illinois. in Arizona., in Texas., Mississippi, and here in Ohio. Over the years Barbara and I have been blessed to know some truly remarkable people in these congregations. I often think of their kindness and forbearance, and their continued love to us even though we are far removed from one another. "Hardly a day passes that’ I do not remember them by name and recall their faces." Psalms 133:1-3, "Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity! It is like the precious ointment upon the head, that ran down upon the beard, even Aaron's beard: that went down to the skirts of his garments; As the dew of Hermon, and as the dew that descended upon the mountains of Zion: for there the LORD commanded the blessing, even life for evermore."
6. That I don't remember the many friends that we have scattered across this country. Our friends that reside in Glendale, Az., Brawley, CA., Plymouth, IN., Phoenix, Az. Tombstone, Az., Canada, Columbus, OH., Bedford, OH., Norwalk, OH., Dayton, OH., Mansfield OH., Hilliard, OH., Eastern KY. (Jeff, Lothair, Hazard, etc.), Montgomery, TX., Dumas, TX., Meridian, MS., Jackson, MS., Chicago, IL., and other places. "Hardly a day passes” that I do not think of these dear friends, some going back to my childhood." "Hardly a day passes" that I do not remember their financial and moral support when we had the auto accident in 1996 and the prayers, cards, and calls from them that have been so encouraging.
"A LOST FRIEND"
Around the corner I have a friend,
In this great nation that has no end;
Yet days go by and weeks rush on
And before I know it a month is gone.
I seldom see my friend's face -
Life is a swift and demanding race.
"Tomorrow", I say, "I will contact him,
Just to show that I'm thinking of him."
But tomorrow comes and tomorrow goes.
And the distance between us grows and grows.
Around the corner - yet miles away...
"Here's a telegram, Sir: Your friend died today."
And that's what we get and deserve in the end -
No contact with our friends:
Till the end...
7. That I don't think of my four daughters and their families. Barbara and I have been abundantly blessed to have had four daughters and seven grandchildren. Their continued well being is always on my mind as I lay down and whenever I rise up. I pray often for their health both physical and spiritual and petition our heavenly Father to be kind and patient toward them all. "Hardly a day passes” that they do not come into my mind."
8. That I don't thank God for allowing me to live another day. As I grow older I indeed appreciate the beauty of God's creation, I do appreciate God's goodness and bounty that has been bestowed upon all of us that reside here in this world. Acts 17:28-29, "For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring...Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and man's devices" Indeed, "Hardly a day passes" that I don't consider how blessed we are to be alive at this time in human history."
9. "Hardly a day passes" that I am not thankful that Christ died for my sins and that His precious blood purchased the church that we are members of today. Acts 20:28;
28 Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood.
Romans 3:25,
25 Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;
1 Corinthians 15:3-4,
3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;
4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

An open tomb, an empty grave,
The stone is backward hurled;
The Lord of life comes forth to save
A lost and ruined world.
An opened door to liberty
From bonds of cold, stark death;
The flowers of immortality
feel not his chilly breath.
An open door to hope and peace
To rest and hope and love;
And to a life that shall not cease
In heaven above.
An open door that none can close,
Lift up your voice and sing!
The gates flung wide, since Christ arose,
And death has lost its sting!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Hardly a day passes" that I don't remember Christ's great work on behalf of humankind, including you and me.
10. "Hardly a day passes” That I don't realize how hard some things are to do ...
... IT IS NOT EASY:
To apologize.
To start over.
To take advice.
To be unselfish.
To admit mistakes.
To face a sneer.
To be charitable.
To keep trying.
To be considerate.
To be a gentleman, always.
To subdue an unruly temper.
To make the best of little.
To endure success.
To keep out of a rut.
To think before acting.
To forgive and try to forget.
To profit by my mistakes...
"BUT IT ALWAYS PAYS,
IN THE END."
11. "Hardly a day passes" That I am not thankful for those who are dedicated to serving the Lord regardless of whatever comes upon them. As I think of those that have consistently stood for the truth regardless of the consequence I am truly encouraged to continue working at levels that are truly beyond my capacity - "thank God for you!
"THE FEW"
The easy roads are crowded,
And the level roads are jammed;
The pleasant little rivers
With the drifting folks are crammed,
But off yonder where it's rocky,
Where you get a better view,
You will find the ranks are thinning
And the travelers are few.
Where the going's smooth and pleasant
You will always find the throng,
For the many, mores the pity,
Seem to like to drift along.
But the steps that call for courage
And the task that's hard to do,
In the end results in glory
For the never-wavering "FEW."
12. "Hardly a day passes” that I do not think of the heavenly home prepared for the faithful. Not only does the home of the faithful come to my mind often but I long to go there someday, myself.
Most of us that have seriously considered the heavenly home are constantly encouraged as we read and understand the 11th chapter of Hebrews. The mature Christian can relate to Abraham and Sarah as inspiration reveals the strength of their faith...
Hebrews 11:8-16,
8 By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went.
9 By faith he sojourned in the land of promise, as in a strange country, dwelling in tabernacles with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise:
10 For he looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God.
11 Through faith also Sara herself received strength to conceive seed, and was delivered of a child when she was past age, because she judged him faithful who had promised.
12 Therefore sprang there even of one, and him as good as dead, so many as the stars of the sky in multitude, and as the sand which is by the sea shore innumerable.
13 These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth.
14 For they that say such things declare plainly that they seek a country.
15 And truly, if they had been mindful of that country from whence they came out, they might have had opportunity to have returned.
16 But now they desire a better country, that is, an heavenly: wherefore God is not ashamed to be called their God: for he hath prepared for them a city.
13. "Hardly a day passes that I do not learn something new." I recent years I have learned to be patient, to wait for people to get better as a result of their understanding of truth.
John 8:31-32,
31 Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed;
32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. (KJV)
CONCLUSION:
I therefore encourage all Christians to be thankful of the good memories and wonderful friends that they have been privileged to have in life. To also remember the bad times too, make the most of present opportunities in life, make sure that your past sins have been corrected and that you can look forward to Christ's second coming with hope and expectation of heaven.
God is just and will forgive us if we come to Him on His terms,
Hebrews 10:23,
“23 Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised;
I John 1:9,
9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
No one can make my hope in heaven become a reality but me. My conduct while I live here in this life and the things that I learn will help me deal correctly with my choices in life. Hardly a day passes that I am not aware of all these things and others as well. "Perhaps you, too, have memories -- learn from the past."
"LET US PRAY:
THAT ALL OF OUR MEMORIES WILL BE HAPPY ONES.”

THE DEVIL'S ABILITY TO TEMPT MAN
Garreth L. Clair
One of the greatest problems that mankind faces today is the continued effort of the Devil to bring him into bondage and hold him there. The Devil's forces are continuous and will not subside until the individual is completely void of righteousness. Some of the methods used by the Devil are documented in the following study, they are:
1. "The lust of the flesh: (See KJV below). 1939 epithumia (ep-ee-thoo-mee'-ah); from 1937; a longing (especially for what is forbidden): KJV-- concupiscence, desire, lust (after). The desire of the flesh is the root of this particular sin.
2. "The lust of the eyes" (See KJV below) 1939 epithumia (ep-ee-thoo-mee'-ah);
from 1937; a longing (especially for what is forbidden): KJV-- concupiscence, desire, lust (after). That observed with the eyes is the source of this particular sin.
3. "The pride of life." (See KJV below). The source of this sin is inordinate pride -pride is the position gained or applause of man the perpetuator of this sin. (Source of all three Greek definitions: Strong’s with numbers included)
I John 2:15-16;
15 Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. (KJV)
CONSIDER THIS:
In the very beginning (i.e., in the Garden of Eden) the Devil (i.e., the serpent) used the method pointed out in our text by John, note the following reading please: Genesis 3:1-6,
1 Now the serpent was more subtle than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?
2 And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden:
3 But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.
4 And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die:
5 For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.
6 And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat. (KJV)
The Devil has not changed his approach, he still uses the same methods of temptation today. The Christian has an advantage over the non-Christian in that the Christian is aware of the Devil's devices and his evil intentions, the non-Christian may not be aware of the Devil's devices. For this reason the Christian ought to be consistently involved in dispensing his/her knowledge about the Devil's intentions to the unsuspecting relative, friend, or co-laborer at the place of employment.
In consequence of these facts about the Devil, temptation, and life beyond the grave, may we use our knowledge of these things to encourage the lost and the fallen (cf., Gal 6:1-6, 1 "Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted. 2 Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ. 3 For if a man think himself to be something, when he is nothing, he deceiveth himself. 4 But let every man prove his own work, and then shall he have rejoicing in himself alone, and not in another. 5 For every man shall bear his own burden. 6 Let him that is taught in the word communicate unto him that teacheth in all good things."(KJV).
Remember this, we have only this life to do good, therefore let us take advantage of every opportunity to reach out the hand of assistance to anyone in our path of life

----- LOVE IN ACTION -----
LOVE (NOUN AND VERB)
A. Verbs.
1. agapao ^25^ and the corresponding noun agape (B, No. 1 below) present "the characteristic word of Christianity, and since the Spirit of revelation has used it to express ideas previously unknown, inquiry into its use, whether in Greek literature or in the Septuagint, throws but little light upon its distinctive meaning in the NT. cf, however, <Lev. 19:18; Deut. 6:5>.
"Agape and agapao are used in the NT (a) to describe the attitude of God toward His Son, <John 17:26>; the human race, generally, <John 3:16; Rom. 5:8>, and to such as believe on the Lord Jesus Christ particularly <John 14:21>; (b) to convey His will to His children concerning their attitude one toward another, <John 13:34>, and toward all men, <1 Thes. 3:12; 1 Cor. 16:14; 2 Pet. 1:7>; (c) to express the essential nature of God, <1 John 4:8>.
"Love can be known only from the actions it prompts. God's love is seen in the gift of His Son, <1 John 4:9,10>. But obviously this is not the love of complacency, or affection, that is, it was not drawn out by any excellency in its objects, <Rom. 5:8>. It was an exercise of the divine will in deliberate choice, made without assignable cause save that which lies in the nature of God Himself, Cf. <Deut. 7:7,8>.
Note: the author's (i.e., glc) detailed comments on this paragraph at the close, titled
"CONSIDER THIS"
"Love had its perfect expression among men in the Lord Jesus Christ, <2 Cor. 5:14; Eph. 2:4; 3:19; 5:2>; Christian love is the fruit of His Spirit in the Christian, <Gal. 5:22>.
"Christian love has God for its primary object, and expresses itself first of all in implicit obedience to His commandments, <John 14:15, 21,23; 15:10; 1 John 2:5; 5:3; 2 John 6>. Self-will, that is, self-pleasing, is the negation of love to God.
"Christian love, whether exercised toward the brethren, or toward men generally, is not an impulse from the feelings, it does not always run with the natural inclinations, nor does it spend itself only upon those for whom some affinity is discovered. Love seeks the welfare of all, <Rom. 15:2>, and works no ill to any, <13:8-10>; love seeks opportunity to do good to `all men, and especially toward them that are of the household of the faith,' <Gal. 6:10>. See further <1 Cor. 13> and <Col. 3:12-14>."
From Notes on Thessalonians, by Hogg and Vine, p. 105.
In respect of agapao as used of God, it expresses the deep and constant "love" and interest of a perfect Being towards entirely unworthy objects, producing and fostering a reverential "love" in them towards the Giver, and a practical "love" towards those who are partakers of the same, and a desire to help others to seek the Giver.
2. phileo ^5368^ is to be distinguished from agapao in this, that phileo more nearly represents "tender affection." The two words are used for the "love" of the Father for the Son, <John 3:35> (No. 1), and <5:20> (No. 2); for the believer, <14:21> (No. 1) and <16:27> (No. 2); both, of Christ's "love" for a certain disciple, <13:23> (No. 1), and <20:2> (No. 2). Yet the distinction between the two verbs remains, and they are never used indiscriminately in the same passage; if each is used with reference to the same objects, as just mentioned, each word retains its distinctive and essential character.
Phileo is never used in a command to men to "love" God; it is, however, used as a warning in <1 Cor. 16:22>; agapao is used instead, e. g., <Matt. 22:37; Luke 10:27; Rom. 8:28; 1 Cor. 8:3; 1 Pet. 1:8; 1 John 4:21>. The distinction between the two verbs finds a conspicuous instance in the narrative of <John 21:15-17>. The context itself indicates that agapao in the first two questions suggests the "love" that values and esteems (cf. <Rev. 12:11>). It is an unselfish "love," ready to serve. The use of phileo in Peter's answers and the Lord's third question, conveys the thought of cherishing the Object above all else, of manifesting an affection characterized by constancy, from the motive of the highest veneration. See also Trench, Syn., Sec. xii.
Again, to "love" (phileo) life, from an undue desire to preserve it, forgetful of the real object of living, meets with the Lord's reproof, <John 12:25>. On the contrary, to "love" life (agapao) as used in <1 Pet. 3:10>, is to consult the true interests of living. Here the word phileo would be quite inappropriate.
Note: In <Mark 12:38>, KJV, thelo, "to wish," is translated "love" (RV, "desire").
B. Nouns.
1. agape ^26^, the significance of which has been pointed out in connection with A, No. 1, is always rendered "love" in the RV where the KJV has "charity," a rendering nowhere used in the RV; in <Rom. 14:15>, where the KJV has "charitably," the RV, adhering to the translation of the noun, has "in love."
Note: In the two statements in <1 John 4:8> and <16>, "God is love," both are used to enjoin the exercise of "love" on the part of believers. While the former introduces a declaration of the mode in which God's love has been manifested <vv. 9,10>, the second introduces a statement of the identification of believers with God in character, and the issue at the Judgment Seat hereafter <v. 17>, an identification represented ideally in the sentence "as He is, so are we in this world."
2. philanthropia ^5363^ denotes, lit., "love for man" (phileo and anthropos, "man"); hence, "kindness," <Acts 28:2>, in <Titus 3:4>, "(His) love toward man."# Cf. the adverb philanthropos, "humanely, kindly," <Acts 27:3>.#
Note: For philarguria, "love of money," <1 Tim. 6:10>, see MONEY (love of).
For philadelphia, see BROTHER, Note (1).

CONSIDER THIS:
Whenever we examine the Greek meaning of the words from which our English word love comes we are impressed with the Biblical concept. The concept, love, is misunderstood by many honest people who assume that love is all that is essential to a good relationship with the Father, Christ, and the Holy Spirit -- this is a false notion as is exemplified by the following verses of Scripture:
John 14:15
15 If ye love me, keep my commandments. (KJV)
John 15:10-14
10 If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in his love.
11 These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full.
12 This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you.
13 Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.
14 Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you. (KJV)
Keeping the commandments of our Lord is a demonstration of man's love for God. The failure to obey indicates a lack of faith or an unwillingness to conform to the Divine Nature -- both actions constitute rebellion against God. Love in action, then; is the willingness to conform ourselves to the nature of our example, Jesus Christ as we are capable, in all things. glc

CONSTANT ATTENTION
The life of a Christian is a life of constant attention to spiritual details if it is to be successful. The Christian that does not take care to be correct in his life with regard to God's instruction will surely fail to acquire that desired goal, "heaven". Please notice the following Scriptural references that attest to this fact:
Matthew 25:14-30
14 For the kingdom of heaven is as a man traveling into a far country, who called his own servants, and delivered unto them his goods.
15 And unto one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one; to every man according to his several ability; and straightway took his journey.
16 Then he that had received the five talents went and traded with the same, and made them other five talents.
17 And likewise he that had received two, he also gained other two.
18 But he that had received one went and digged in the earth, and hid his lord's money.
19 After a long time the lord of those servants cometh, and reckoneth with them.
20 And so he that had received five talents came and brought other five talents, saying, Lord, thou deliveredst unto me five talents: behold, I have gained beside them five talents more.
21 His lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.
22 He also that had received two talents came and said, Lord, thou deliveredst unto me two talents: behold, I have gained two other talents beside them.
23 His lord said unto him, Well done, good and faithful servant; thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.
24 Then he which had received the one talent came and said, Lord, I knew thee that thou art an hard man, reaping where thou hast not sown, and gathering where thou hast not strawed:
25 And I was afraid, and went and hid thy talent in the earth: lo, there thou hast that is thine.
26 His lord answered and said unto him, Thou wicked and slothful servant, thou knewest that I reap where I sowed not, and gather where I have not strawed:
27 Thou oughtest therefore to have put my money to the exchangers, and then at my coming I should have received mine own with usury.
28 Take therefore the talent from him, and give it unto him which hath ten talents.
29 For unto every one that hath shall be given, and he shall have abundance: but from him that hath not shall be taken away even that which he hath.
30 And cast ye the unprofitable servant into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. (KJV)
This parable teaches us that our life as Christians is to be lived out performing service to God with whatever talents (i.e., abilities) that we possess.
Revelation 2:10
10 Fear none of those things which thou shalt suffer: behold, the devil shall cast some of you into prison, that ye may be tried; and ye shall have tribulation ten days: be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life. (KJV)
Although this passage is addressed to one of the sever churches of Asia, the truth enjoined upon those Christians nearly 20 centuries ago is still applicable to us today -- "live faithful until we die."
LIFE WILL SOON BE OVER, LIVE FOR GOD EVERY DAY THAT YOU HAVE LEFT.

ACCEPTING RESPONSIBILITY
Editorial: Garreth L. Clair
One of the characteristics that most people today have in common is their refusal to accept personal responsibility for things that they have control over. It is not uncommon today to hear people give as their excuse for some failure in life one of the following:
1. I did not know how to do it.
2. I saw someone else do it that way and I thought it should be done that way.
3. Someone told me so.
4. I did not have time to read about the problem.
5. Someone made me do it that way.
6. I thought it was acceptable..
7. Everyone else believes that is right.
There are many other responses given for failures in life by many people today just like these listed. What is wrong with this list? It simply is a dodging of personal responsibility and a failure to accept the consequence for a bad decision or a bad choice when called to account for the failure.
In most all secular pursuits today, people are refusing to accept responsibility for their deeds, lifestyle, or economic condition. This attitude of refusing responsibility for personal actions is also a problem in many congregations today.
The Bible tells us that our eternal destiny depends upon our acceptance of personal responsibility for the things we do and for the way we live. Please observe the following Scriptural references that show personal responsibly is to be accepted if man is to please God:
Matthew 25:15-28
(KJV)
Hebrews 5:8-9
8 Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered;
9 And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him;
CONCLUSION:
In reality everyone is responsible for the choices that they make in every arena of life. For every choice there are consequences, therefore when we accept responsibility for the decisions we make we will weigh the consequences before we make the choice. To consider well our choices and the possible consequence is a Biblical principle that everyone should incorporate within their actions toward choices in life (i.e., count the cost or consider the consequence well before committing to a position),that is an exercise in personal responsibility.

SOME IMPORTANT FACTS ABOUT THE CHURCH OF CHRIST
1. Christ built it:
Matt 16:18, “And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.”
2. Established on Pentecost:
Acts 2:1, “1 And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.”
Acts 2:38-41, “38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
39 For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call. 40 And with many other words did he testify and exhort, saying, Save yourselves from this untoward generation. 41 Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.”
Acts 2:47, “Praising God, and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved.”
3. Purchased with the blood of Christ:
Acts 20:28 "Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood."
4. The Lord adds the saved to it:
Acts 2:47, “ praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved.”
5. Christ is its foundation:
1 Cor 3:11, “For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.”
6. Reconciliation is in it:
Eph 2:14-16, “14 For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us;
15 Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace; 16 And that he might reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross, having slain the enmity thereby:”
7 Christ is its head:
Eph 1:22-23,
“22 And hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church, 23 Which is his body, the fullness of him that filleth all in all.” (KJV)

Psalms 23:1-6
1 The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.
2 He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.
3 He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.
4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
5 Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.
6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever. (KJV)
Commentary by Garreth L. Clair
The thoughts revealed to us in these six verses is surely encouraging, the writer, probably David, states in clear terms his trust and confidence in the Lord God to always provide all things adequate for him regardless of the untoward circumstance, even into the face of death itself. Because of the writers confidence in God to provide adequately, he indicate that he will dwell in the presence of the Lord God eternally, whether in life or in death.
