A NEW YEAR
It is amazing to me how swiftly time is passing; it seems like only yesterday that I began preaching the gospel in the Chicago area yet, that has been 43 years ago. The nature of our existence is truly remarkable as we contemplate the vastness of time and eternity as it relates to the teaching of the Bible. Indeed, the Bible teaches us that time is forever; that is, time as we know time actually began with the creation recorded in the Book of Genesis and will end when Christ returns to judge humankind and assign the faithful to heaven and the wicked to the lake of fire. Even though time as we know it will eventually end, the time of God has no end. God is eternal and eternity has neither beginning nor ending, therefore time in eternity is impossible to gauge and is really immaterial.
Since we are created beings, we are to respond to our Creator as he wills. Since our creator is God, we will want to respond to His instruction because of our knowledge that without His action we could not exist. You see God is the sustainer of our environment, and everything that pertains to our existence. To understand this fact is important to our understanding regarding our place in the scheme of things visible and invisible. Since God did create our first parents (i.e. Adam & Eve) and made it possible for them to multiply, we understand that our presence here on the earth is controlled by God. Therefore, God is in charge of everything that pertains to our existence, our destiny is predicated upon our understanding and response to this knowledge, As we acquire knowledge of God’s goodness toward us, we naturally want to respond to please and glorify Him. If we know that God loves us and cares for us, surely we will want to obey his wishes regardless of whatever those wishes are. Today is a good time to reexamine ourselves so that we can honestly determine what we want to be in the coming years, do we want to be right with God or do we want to be something less than right in our relationship to God and others? REMEMBER THIS – our time here is growing shorter with each passing day, now is the time to get right with God and with our family, friends, and neighbors
GOD LIVES US AND CARES FOR US
In John 3:16 we are told that God loves us, ”For God so loved the world, that He gave his only begotten son, that whosoever believes on him should not perish, but have eternal life.“ (ASV) Since God’s word teaches this fact, it is imperative that we also understand that we can have a good relationship with God simply by following (i.e. simply becoming obedient to his instruction Hebrews 5:8-9). Because we are created beings, we should understand that God does know what is best for us, God says of us and our limitations, 1 Thessalonians 3:11, ”Now may our God and Father himself, and our Lord Jesus, direct our way unto you:“
Proverbs 3:6, ”In all thy ways acknowledge him, And he will direct thy paths.“ (ASV)
Jeremiah 10:23, ”O Jehovah, I know that the way of man is not in himself: it is not in man that walketh to direct his steps.“ (ASV)
From these verses it is obvious that we need guidance from God so that we can walk through this life acceptable to God. It is important that we realize this fact; we need to come to a correct understanding of God’s will for us and respond.
GOD GIVES US UNDERSTANDABLE INSTRUCTIONS
In order that we might be able to know what we ought and ought not to do in this life, God gives us understandable instructions via the Written Word (i.e. the Bible).
CONSIDER THIS:
What should I do in the following situations?
1. If I am not right with God – I have never been a Christian:
A. Know that you can be saved from sin - Matthew 11:28-30, ”28 Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.“ (ASV)
B. Be willing to do whatever God instructs you to do – Hebrews 5:8-9, ”8 though he was a Son, yet learned obedience by the things which he suffered; 9 and having been made perfect, he became unto all them that obey him the author of eternal salvation;“ (ASV)
C. Determine to live faithful to God’s instructions until you die – Revelation 2:10, ”Fear not the things which thou art about to suffer: behold, the devil is about to cast some of you into prison, that ye may be tried; and ye shall have tribulation ten days. Be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee the crown of life.“ (ASV)
2. If I belong to a false religion:
A. Know that God will forgive you for that – 1 John 1:9, ”If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.“
B. Be willing to come to God on God’s terms - Ephesians 1:7, ”in whom we have our redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace,“ ASV
C. After converting to Christ, remain faithful (i.e. imitate the Apostle Paul’s life) - 2 Timothy 4:7, ”I have fought the good fight, I have finished the course, I have kept the faith:“ ASV
3. If you are a Christian but you have backslidden (i.e. fallen back again into sin) – 2 Peter 2:20-22, ”20For if, after they have escaped the defilements of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled therein and overcome, the last state is become worse with them than the first. 21 For it were better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than, after knowing it, to turn back from the holy commandment delivered unto them. 22 It has happened unto them according to the true proverb, The dog turning to his own vomit again, and the sow that had washed to wallowing in the mire.“ ASV
4. Correct your life, repent and return to God – Galatians 6:1, ”Brethren, even if a man be overtaken in any trespass, ye who are spiritual, restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness; looking to thyself, lest thou also be tempted.“ ASV
5 Determine to remain faithful – John 14:23, ”Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my word: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.“
OUR ETERNAL DESTINY DEPENDS
UPON OUR CHOICES IN THIS LIFE
Every one of us will have to make the decision someday to obey God’s instructions or to reject them. It is true that those that have not grown mentally so that they are able to made conscious choices between good and evil are safe. These are safe because they are not responsible for their decisions due to handicap (i.e. either through genetics or through some other event). Only those that are capable of understanding the difference between right and wrong (i.e. between good and evil) are amenable to the law of God. There is no teaching in the Bible that remotely suggests that every person born into the world is a sinner – sin is not something that we inherit – sin is something that we do (i.e. transgress divine law – 1 John 3:4, ”Every one that doeth sin doeth also lawlessness; and sin is lawlessness.“ ASV The great problem today that hinders many people from coming to Christ is the many diverse, even contradictory religious philosophies presented to man in the name of true religion. The religion of Jesus is a religion that had its beginning in Jerusalem approximately 2000 years ago when, according to Acts 2 the church had its beginning as predicted by Jesus himself in Matthew 16:13-18, ”13 Now when Jesus came into the parts of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying, Who do men say that the Son of man is? 14 And they said, Some (say) John the Baptist; some, Elijah; and others, Jeremiah, or one of the prophets. 15 He saith unto them, But who say ye that I am? 16 And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God. 17 And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Bar-Jonah: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father who is in heaven. 18 And I also say unto thee, that thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.“ (ASV) Jesus while on the earth prayed for unity of His disciples based upon the ”truth“ – John 17:20-21, ”20 Neither for these only do I pray, but for them also that believe on me through their word; 21 that they may all be one; even as thou, Father, (art) in me, and I in thee, that they also may be in us: that the world may believe that thou didst send me.“ (ASV)
REMEMBER THIS: You can know the right way by searching the Book of God (i.e. the Bible). Do not be mislead, turn to your Bible and search it, for within its pages is the wisdom of God found.
GOD’S FAMILY VALUES – PART 2
(Part 1 – in December 2001 issue)
INTRODUCTION:
The family consists of several facets; one of them has to do with the relationship of the parents to the children. This article deals with some Biblical examples of parenting and the result of that parenting, in some cases the example is good in other cases the example of the parents rearing process results in problems. The examples that we will look to will aid us in knowing how best to rear our children and how not to do so. Please observe the following child rearing methods of Biblical parents in the past:
- ABRAHAM – Because of his faithfulness he is declared by God to be a Good parent – Genesis 18:18-19, ”18 Seeing that Abraham had surely become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed in him? 19 For I have known him, to the end that he may command his children and his household after him, that they may keep the way of Jehovah, to do righteousness and justice. To the end that Jehovah may bring upon Abraham that which he hath spoken of him.“ ASV
- JEPHTHAH – Created problems for his daughter because he talked too much, he was presumptuous – Judges 11:30-39, ”30 And Jephthah vowed a vow unto Jehovah, and said, If thou wilt indeed deliver the children of Ammon into my hand, 31 then it shall be, that whatsoever cometh forth from the doors of my house to meet me, when I return in peace from the children of Ammon, it shall be Jehovah's, and I will offer it up for a burnt-offering. 32 So Jephthah passed over unto the children of Ammon to fight against them; and Jehovah delivered them into his hand. 33 And he smote them from Aroer until thou come to Minnith, even twenty cities, and unto Abelcheramim, with a very great slaughter. So the children of Ammon were subdued before the children of Israel. 34 And Jephthah came to Mizpah unto his house; and, behold, his daughter came out to meet him with timbrels and with dances: and she was his only child; besides her he had neither son nor daughter.
35 And it came to pass, when he saw her, that he rent his clothes, and said, Alas, my daughter! thou hast brought me very low, and thou art one of them that trouble me; for I have opened my mouth unto Jehovah, and I cannot go back. 36 And she said unto him, My father, thou hast opened thy mouth unto Jehovah; do unto me according to that which hath proceeded out of thy mouth, forasmuch as Jehovah hath taken vengeance for thee on thine enemies, even on the children of Ammon. 37 And she said unto her father, Let this thing be done for me: let me alone two months, that I may depart and go down upon the mountains, and bewail my virginity, I and my companions. 38 And he said, Go. And he sent her away for two months: and she departed, she and her companions, and bewailed her virginity upon the mountains. 39 And it came to pass at the end of two months, that she returned unto her father, who did with her according to his vow which he had vowed: and she knew not man. And it was a custom in Israel,“ ASV
- HANNA – A holy parent that planned a good life for her son before he was born – 1 Samuel 1:11, ”And she vowed a vow, and said, O Jehovah of hosts, if thou wilt indeed look on the affliction of thy handmaid, and remember me, and not forget thy handmaid, but wilt give unto thy handmaid a man-child, then I will give him unto Jehovah all the days of his life, and there shall no razor come upon his head.“ ASV
4. ELI – Was indulgent with his children, placing them before the instructions he received from God – 1 Samuel 2:22-29, ”22 Now Eli was very old; and he heard all that his sons did unto all Israel,
and how that they lay with the women that did service at the door of the tent of meeting. 23 And he said unto them, Why do ye such things? for I hear of your evil dealings from all this people. 24 Nay, my sons; for it is no good report that I hear: ye make Jehovah's people to transgress. 25 If one man sin against another, God shall judge him; but if a man sin against Jehovah, who shall entreat for him? Notwithstanding, they hearkened not unto the voice of their father, because Jehovah was minded to slay them. 26 And the child Samuel grew on, and increased in favor both with Jehovah, and also with men. 27 And there came a man of God unto Eli, and said unto him, Thus saith Jehovah, Did I reveal myself unto the house of thy father, when they were in Egypt (in bondage) to Pharaoh's house? 28 and did I choose him out of all the tribes of Israel to be my priest, to go up unto mine altar, to burn incense, to wear an ephod before me? and did I give unto the house of thy father all the offerings of the children of Israel made by fire? 29 Wherefore kick ye at my sacrifice and at mine offering, which I have commanded in (my) habitation, and honorest thy sons above me, to make yourselves fat with the chiefest of all the offerings of Israel my people?“ ASV
5. DAVID – Could not restrain his son, Absalom; was rebellious and caused him mush distress –
2 Samuel 18:32-33, ”32 And the king said unto the Cushite, Is it well with the young man Absalom? And the Cushite answered, The enemies of my lord the king, and all that rise up against thee to do thee hurt, be as that young man is. 33 And the king was much moved, and went up to the chamber over the gate, and wept: and as he went, thus he said, O my son Absalom, my son, my son Absalom! would I had died for thee, O Absalom, my son, my son!“ ASV
6. JONADAB – Apparently controlled his sons, they honored him by obeying his instructions – Jeremiah 35:5-10, ”5 and I set before the sons of the house of the Rechabites bowls full of wine, and cups; and I said unto them, Drink ye wine. 6 But they said, We will drink no wine; for Jonadab the son of Rechab, our father, commanded us, saying, Ye shall drink no wine, neither ye, nor your sons, for ever: 7 neither shall ye build house, nor sow seed, nor plant vineyard, nor have any; but all your days ye shall dwell in tents; that ye may live many days in the land wherein ye sojourn.
8 And we have obeyed the voice of Jonadab the son of Rechab, our father, in all that he charged us, to drink no wine all our days, we, our wives, our sons, or our daughters; 9 nor to build houses for us to dwell in; neither have we vineyard, nor field, nor seed: 10 but we have dwelt in tents, and have obeyed, and done according to all that Jonadab our father commanded us.“ ASV
6. THE PRODIGAL SON,S FATHER – Forgiving his son’s headstrongness once he came to his senses and welcomed him home again – Luke 15:17-24, ”17 But when he came to himself he said, How many hired servants of my father's have bread enough and to spare, and I perished here with hunger! 18 I will arise and go to my father, and will say unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and in thy sight: 19 I am no more worthy to be called your son: make me as one of thy hired servants. 20 And he arose, and came to his father. But while he was yet afar off, his father saw him, and was moved with compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck and kissed him. 21 And the son said unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and in thy sight: I am no more worthy to be called thy son. 22 But the father said to his servants, Bring forth quickly the best robe, and put it on him; and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet: 23 and bring the fatted calf, (and) kill it, and let us eat, and make merry: 24 for this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found. And they began to be merry.“ ASV
THE MOST ACCURATE GUIDE FOR CHILD REARING TODAY
We know that God created mankind (Genesis 1:1-3); we also know that since this is true God knows how the family unit should function. Since God created us, blessed us with the ability to procreate, and gave us a perfect guide (i.e. the Bible), we ought to know how to fit in as a family member. Yes, we can know by using God’s rulebook for living as a Godly family unit.

Each member can assist us in
GREETING OUR VISITORS EACH SERVICE
Each member of the congregation ought to make an effort to meet all the visitors that frequent our assembly.
Visitors are not obligated to introduce themselves to us but we ought to be willing to go out of our way to introduce ourselves to them.
REMEMBER THIS:
The visitors are new to our assembly – we are their hosts – let us be mindful of the obligation that we have to welcome them and invite them to return.
ADDED NOTE:
Give the visitors that you meet one of the visitors cards and ask them to fill it our and pass it back to you at their convenience.

EXTENDING OUR INFLUENCE
Editorial by Garreth L. Clair
CONVERSION OF THE SINNER IS A BIBLICAL DOCTRINE
Those of us that seek to expand the borders of the Lord's church need to be constantly aware of that necessity in this present world. The concept that we are not responsible for the millions that are caught in the web of sin is contrary to the teaching of the Bible and ought not to be seriously considered. The world religious movement of today insists that evangelism of other religions is not acceptable, this response is totally contrary to the basic philosophy advocated by the Bible. You see, the Bible clearly teaches that true Christians are to "Go into all the world {i.e., unto all nations and races of people} and to teach the gospel of Jesus Christ" for the purpose of converting aliens and those that practice false religions --
THE APOSTLES OF CHRIST
UNDERSTOOD THEIR MISSION WAS TO CONVERT ALL MANKIND
Matthew 28:18-20, 18 And Jesus came to them and spoke unto them, saying, All authority hath been given unto me in
heaven and on earth.
19 Go ye therefore, and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them into the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit:
20 teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I commanded you: and lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. ASV
This charge given by the Savior is repeated by Mark in Mark 16:15-16, 15 And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to the whole creation.
16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that disbelieveth shall be condemned. ASV
Again, the Savior gave this instruction to His apostles just preceding His accent up into the presence of the Father. He told them that they were to wait in Jerusalem until they received power to perform the task He had assigned them, please note the underlined portion of the contexts here: Luke 24:46-49, 46 and he said unto them, Thus it is written, that the Christ should suffer, and rise again from the dead the third day; 47 and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name unto all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem. 48 Ye are witnesses of these things. 49 And behold, I send forth the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city, until ye be clothed with power from on high. ASV
PAUL, THE APOSTLE TO THE GENTILES ALSO UNDERSTOOD THAT HIS MISSION WAS TO CONVERT ALL NATIONS TO CHRIST
Paul, was a devout Jew and did as he thought was right while in the Jewish religion - cf., Acts 23:6,
6 But when Paul perceived that the one part were Sadducees and the other Pharisees, he cried out in the council, Brethren, I am a Pharisee, a son of Pharisees: touching the hope and resurrection of the dead I am called in question. ASV
Acts 26:5-6,
5 having knowledge of me from the first, if they be willing to testify, that after the straitest sect of our religion I lived a Pharisee.
6 And now I stand (here) to be judged for the hope of the promise made of God unto our fathers; ASV
Acts 26:9-11,
9 I verily thought with myself that I ought to do many things contrary to the name of Jesus of Nazareth.
10 And this I also did in Jerusalem: and I both shut up many of the saints in prisons, having received authority from the chief priests, and when they were put to death I gave my vote against them.
11 And punishing them oftentimes in all the synagogues, I strove to make them blaspheme; and being exceedingly mad against them, I persecuted them even unto foreign cities. ASV
From these verses of Scripture it is apparent that Paul was a member of the Jewish religion and was very devout about this religion. Indeed, he was convinced that the Jews religion was correct, yet his convictions were not correct as he found out on the road to Damascus cf., Acts 9:1-21,
1But Saul {i.e., Paul's name before he was converted}, yet breathing threatening and slaughter against the disciples of the Lord, went unto the high priest,
2and asked of him letters to Damascus unto the synagogues, that if he found any that were of the Way, whether men or women, he might bring them bound to Jerusalem.
3And as he journeyed, it came to pass that he drew nigh unto Damascus: and suddenly there shone round about him a light out of heaven:
4and he fell upon the earth, and heard a voice saying unto him, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me?
5And he said, Who art thou, Lord? And he (said), I am Jesus whom thou persecutest:
6but rise, and enter into the city, and it shall be told thee what thou must do.
7And the men that journeyed with him stood speechless, hearing the voice, but beholding no man.
8And Saul arose from the earth; and when his eyes were opened, he saw nothing; and they led him by the hand, and brought him into Damascus.
9And he was three days without sight, and did neither eat nor drink.
10Now there was a certain disciple at Damascus, named Ananias; and the Lord said unto him in a vision, Ananias. And he said, Behold, I (am here), Lord.
11And the Lord (said) unto him, Arise, and go to the street which is called Straight, and inquire in the house of Judas for one named Saul, a man of Tarsus: for behold, he prayeth;
12and he hath seen a man named Ananias coming in, and laying his hands on him, that he might receive his sight.
13But Ananias answered, Lord, I have heard from many of this man, how much evil he did to thy saints at Jerusalem:
14and here he hath authority from the
chief priests to bind all that call upon thy name.
15But the Lord said unto him, Go thy way: for he is a chosen vessel unto me, to bear my name before the Gentiles and kings, and the children of Israel:
16for I will show him how many things he must suffer for my name's sake.
17And Ananias departed, and entered into the house; and laying his hands on him said, Brother Saul, the Lord, (even) Jesus, who appeared unto thee in the way which thou camest, hath sent me, that thou mayest receive thy sight, and be filled with the Holy Spirit.
18And straightway there fell from his eyes as it were scales, and he received his sight; and he arose and was baptized;
19and he took food and was strengthened. And he was certain days with the disciples that were at Damascus.
20And straightway in the synagogues he proclaimed Jesus, that he is the Son of God.
21And all that heard him were amazed, and said, Is not this he that in Jerusalem made havoc of them that called on this name? and he had come hither for this intent, that he might bring them bound before the chief priests. ASV
Indeed, it is amazing that Paul was willing to convert to the religion of Christ from Judaism. Paul is an example of a sincere follower of the one true God, he understood that whatever God instructed is the truth. Paul also understood that all that he possessed was not worth throwing away his soul to hold on to. Please note the reading in Phil. 3:5-9,
5 circumcised the eighth day, of the stock of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews; as touching the law, a Pharisee;
6 as touching zeal, persecuting the church; as touching the righteousness which is in the law, found blameless.
7 Howbeit what things were gain to me, these have I counted loss for Christ.
8 Yea verily, and I count all things to be loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but refuse, that I may gain Christ,
9 and be found in him, not having a righteousness of mine own, (even) that which is of the law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which is from God by faith: ASV
THE CONGREGATION AND THE INDIVIDUAL CHRISTIAN ARE TO WORK
AT EXTENDING THE BORDERS OF THE LORD'S CHURCH
Ø THE CONGREGATION:
Each congregation of the Lord's people
have been instructed to evangelize the world. There are some congregations today that do not consider this as significant work for the congregation; I say some, because their actions show that this is not an important part of their planning and current work. Since the Scripture clearly indicates that this is a work of the church as demonstrated by the apostle Paul and clearly taught by him -- cf., Acts 14:26, 26 and thence they sailed to Antioch, from whence they had been committed to the grace of God for the work which they had fulfilled. ASV
Ephesians 4:12, 12 for the perfecting of the saints, unto the work of ministering, unto the building up of the body of Christ:
Acts 11:26,26and when he had found him, he brought him unto Antioch. And it came to pass, that even for a whole year they were gathered together with the church, and taught much people, and that the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch. ASV
Paul traveled throughout the world of his day preaching the gospel, he was involved in four journeys that involved preaching the gospel and setting up churches. Paul also received his financial support from some of the churches that were established which indicated that the congregations of his day understood the importance of converting the lost to the religion that Christ had established on Pentecost day - cf., Acts 2:1-47. The same is true of congregations of God's people today, we all should understand that the congregation that we are a member of needs our support so that the gospel can be spread abroad -- this will result in an increase in the numerical strength of the Lord's church in the community in which it resides.
Ø AS AN INDIVIDUAL CHRISTIAN:
Indeed, I have a responsibility to help the congregation do whatever work in evangelism that it is able to do with its resources. On the other hand, I may, as an individual evangelize the community by exerting my knowledge and influence with my friends, neighbors, work related contacts, and any other opportunities that are available to me. The Scripture is also clear about this facet of the Christian's work; please observe the following reference - Acts 8:1-4,
And Saul was consenting unto his death. And there arose on that day a great persecution against the church which was in Jerusalem; and they were all scattered abroad throughout the regions of Judaea and Samaria, except the apostles.
2And devout men buried Stephen, and made great lamentation over him.
3But Saul laid waste the church, entering into every house, and dragging men and women committed them to prison.
4They therefore that were scattered abroad, went about preaching the word.
TODAY, AS IN THE FIRST CENTURY WE MUST TEACH/PREACH THE GOSPEL WITH THE INTENTION OF CONVERTING THE SINNER
The disciples of the Lord in the first Century were not always received with open arms; many times their audience detested the message of the gospel. There is still today many that detest the gospel yet we must not waver in our insistence of bring the message to the lost.
CONSIDER THESE FACTS:
1. Because of the teaching of the gospel the teachers were charged with "turning the world upside down"
Acts 17:6,
6 And when they found them not, they dragged Jason and certain brethren before the rulers of the city, crying, These that have turned the world upside down are come hither also; ASV
Psalms 146:9,
9 Jehovah preserveth the sojourners; He upholdeth the fatherless and widow; but the way of the wicked he turneth upside down. ASV
2. Because of the teaching of the gospel the teachers were put in jail.
Acts 5:17-19,
17 But the high priest rose up, and all they that were with him (which is the sect of the Sadducees), and they were
filled with jealousy, 18 and laid hands on the apostles, and put them in public ward {i.e., jail}.
19 But an angel of the Lord by night opened the prison doors, and brought them out, and said, ASV
3. Because of the teaching of the gospel the preacher was killed.
Acts 7:58-60,
58 and they cast him out of the city, and stoned him: and the witnesses laid down their garments at
the feet of a young man named Saul. 59 And they stoned Stephen, calling upon (the Lord), and saying, Lord Jesus,
receive my spirit. 60 And he kneeled down, and cried with a loud voice, Lord, lay not this sin to
their charge. And when he had said this, he fell asleep. ASV
As can be seen from these three examples from the first century, many of the teachers of that period
were not well received even though they did teach the truth. Therefore we ought not become discouraged if we
are not well received part of the time whenever we attempt to teach other people the gospel of Christ.
REMEMBER THIS:
1. The truth can free men and women from sin - John 8:32, 32 and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. ASV
2. The Written Word of God is the truth available to us today.
John 17:17, 17 Sanctify them in the truth: thy word is truth. ASV
3. The Word of God {i.e., context - Christ} will be the standard of judgment in the last day. John 12:48, 48 He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my sayings, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I spoke, the same shall judge him in the last day.
IT IS THEREFORE IMPORTANT THAT WE EVANGELIZE,
AS A CONGREGATION AND AS INDIVIDUALS
LET US DO GOOD UNTO ALL
James 1:27, "Pure religion and undefiled before our God and Father is this, to visit the fatherless and widows in
their affliction, (and) to keep oneself unspotted from the world." ASV
Galatians 6:10, "So then, as we have opportunity, let us work that which is good toward all men, and especially
toward them that are of the household of the faith." ASV
THE USE OF METHODS IN TEACHING
OTHER PEOPLE
Methods have to do with different approaches to the subject matter. Such methods as using the name of
Biblical characters to prepare a study or preparing a study of the miracles in the Bible, the parables of the
Bible, etc
THE USE OF TACT IN THE TEACHING
OF OTHER PEOPLE
This has to do with the approach of the teacher and how he/she comes across to the students in the class.
A good teacher is always conscious of their mood and how they are coming across to the class. If a teacher can
not get good attention of their students, it may be because they are not being tactful in their approach to a
Biblical subject. It is never a good idea to use course, or a caustic disposition in any discussion in a Bible class.
CONCLUSION:
Indeed, the great work of the congregation is evangelism and the great work of the individual Christian
is evangelism; may we always recognize these facts and participate accordingly.

FREEDOM FROM SIN
Every right thinking person surely has a desire to be free from the stain of sin in their life. It is not surprising that since the events of September 11, 2001 that many people are doing some soul searching. It is a serious matter to suddenly die without having taken time to get ones life right with God. Indeed, we all know that Jesus Christ will be the judge at judgment day - cf., John 12:48, "He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my sayings, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I spake, the same shall judge him in the last day." {ASV} Please notice also the statement of Paul in Hebrews 5:8-9, > 8 though he was a Son, yet learned obedience by the things which he suffered; > 9 and having been made perfect, he became unto all them that obey him the author of eternal salvation; {ASV}
HAVE YOU MADE A DECISION YET?
If you have not made a decision to become a Christian, following are some facts you need to know - cf., Acts 11:26, "and when he had found him, he brought him unto Antioch. And it came to pass, that even for a whole year they were gathered together with the church, and taught much people, and that the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch." {ASV} Yes, the person that has come to Christ on His terms is privileged to wear the name "Christian." It is also true that no one can save you from your sin but God. God will save you if you will come to Him and accept His remedy for your sin, the Scriptural method to receive remission of sin is:
Ø Hear the gospel --- Romans 10:17
Ø Believe the gospel message --- Mark 16:15-16
Ø Repent of past sin --- Acts 2:38
Ø Confess with the mouth the Son of God {i.e., Jesus Christ} --- Romans 10:10
Ø Be baptized:
1. A burial in Water --- Romans 6:1-6
2. For the remission of sin --- Acts 2:38
THE LORD WILL THEN, ADD YOU TO HIS CHURCH
Acts 2:47, " praising God, and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to them day by day those that were saved." {ASV}
---------- MAN'S BASIC NEED ----------
Editorial: Garreth L. Clair
TEXT: 2 Timothy 2:1-6,
1 Thou therefore, my child, be strengthened in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.
2 And the things which thou hast heard from me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.
3 Suffer hardship with (me), as a good soldier of Christ Jesus.
4 No soldier on service entangles himself in the affairs of (this) life; that he may please him who enrolled him as soldier.
5 And if also a man contend in the games, he is not crowned, except he have contended lawfully.
6 The husbandmen that laboreth must be the first to partake of the fruits. ASV
INTRODUCTION:
In the above passage, Paul makes it clear that the basic need of every person is to be saved from sin. Throughout this world, mankind, without Jesus Christ, is in a tragic condition, please note the following:
I. The Bible describes man's condition, without Christ, in at least six phrases:
1. He is lost -- Luke 19:10, "For the Son of man came to seek and save that which was lost." ASV
A. The entire population of the earth is lost.
B. Lost, as a city is lost when it falls into the hands of terrorists.
C. As a sick person is lost whenever his sickness is terminal.
2. Without strength -- Romans 5:6, "For while we were yet weak, in due season Christ died for the ungodly."
A. The grace of God is provided for all.
B. Even though we are unable to save ourselves, God has made it possible for us to be saved from sin in a cooperative effort.
C. God will save us from sin, if we obey Him - cf., Hebrews 5:8-9.
3. Without hope -- Ephesians 2:12, "that ye were at that time separate from Christ, alienated from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of the promise, having no hope and without God in the world." ASV
4. Without promise -- Ephesians 2:12,
that ye were at that time separate from Christ, alienated from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of the promise, having no hope and without God in the world. ASV
5. Without liberty -- John 8:32-34,
32 and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.
33 They answered unto him, We are Abraham's seed, and have never yet been in bondage to any man: how sayest thou, Ye shall be made free?
34 Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Every one that committeth sin is the bondservant of sin. ASV
A. Liberty comes to man through hearing of the truth.
B. Without liberty, we are servants of sin.
John 8:44, "Ye are of (your) father the devil, and the lusts of your father it is your will to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and standeth not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father thereof." ASV
6. Without life {i.e., spiritually dead} -- Ephesians 2:1, "And you (did he make alive,) when ye were dead through your trespasses and sins," ASV
A. Destitute of righteousness.
B. Cut off from God, the fountain of life.
C. Dead, as the condemned murderer is said to be "a dead man" as he awaits execution.
II. Man does not have to remain in this condition. This is only the diagnosis; there is a remedy, a cure:
1. The sinner is lost -- "Christ came to seek and to save."
2. The sinner is without strength -- "Christ died for us."
3. The sinner is without hope or promise -- Ephesians 2:13, "But now in Christ Jesus ye that once were far off are made nigh in the blood of Christ." ASV
4. Without Life -- John 10:10, "The thief cometh not, but that he may steal, and kill, and destroy: I came that they may have life, and may have (it) abundantly." ASV
John 20:30-31,
30 Many other signs therefore did Jesus in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book:
31 but these are written, that ye may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye may have life in his name. ASV
5. 1 Timothy 2:4, "who would have all men to be saved, and come to the knowledge of the truth."
III. ARE YOU READY, to be saved from sin, to have strength in Christ, to have hope, to have the promise of everlasting life, to be free from sin, to have liberty in Christ, and to have hope of eternal life?
A. All of this is possible for you today.
B. Will you come to Christ on His terms:
1. Believe the gospel
2. Repent of your sin
3. Confess Christ as God's Son
4. Be baptized "for remission of sin."
Ø Through immersion
Ø As the final act of obedience -- 1 Peter 3:21
C. Arise from the watery grave of baptism a new creature in Christ -- Romans 6:1-6.
The Lord will add you to His Body {i.e., the church} -- Acts 2:47

DEAR READERS
We have been happy to send the HILLIARD BULLETIN out to you for the past four years. We would like to know though if any of you that receive the bulletin would like to be deleted from the list. I understand that sometimes I have received pages of mailings that take much time to sift through; perhaps you may have other, more important priorities. If you do please let us know and we will delete your email address from our mailing each month.
The church here in Hilliard is progressing nicely, with numerical growth coming slowly, in the past week we have had two to place membership with the congregation here with one of them feeling a need to be restored because of failures in her life. We have a gospel meeting that will begin here on April 7 and continue through the 12th. If you are in the area, do feel free to come by during the meeting as often as you are able. Incidentally, the members that make up the congregation here are warm and friendly folks -- I am sure that you will enjoy being with us.
The congregation here has a policy that encourages anyone that wishes to contact us to feel free to contact us either at glclair@aol.com or at the postal address of 4840 Cemetery Road. The church offers a seven and a 12-lesson correspondence course {FREE}, to anyone that would like to sign up for it. The church has a web site located -- http://hometown.aol.com/glclair/myhomepage/index.html
The church has recently began a Sunday morning Bible study that has created some interest, the study consists three parts {1} Examination of terms, "Hebrews, Jews, and Israelites" {2} A timeline of "A History of the Jews from Abraham to 70 AD" {3} The "Four Hundred Silent Years" -- We are currently into our 2nd lesson in this study. Everyone in the community is invited to attend any or all of the sessions each Sunday at 9:45 AM.
SEEKING THE RIGHT PATH
Often a person stumbles through life unconcerned about whether he knows the God of the Bible or not. Some people that attend religious services are just as unconcerned about the truth as the man who has no religion but acknowledges God at the same time. Have you ever had occasion to hear someone say, "Yes, I believe in a supreme being" I just don’t believe in all that religious stuff or the Bible." I am unsure, but it seems to me that there must be something missing in that person's development process. Indeed, everyone should turn to and acknowledge God but they ought also to pursue Him and find out how one may acquire a good relationship with Him. Having a good relationship with God is desirable for without a good relationship with God man cannot hope to go to heaven after judgment. Matt 7:21-23,
21Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father who is in heaven.
22Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy by thy name, and by thy name cast out demons, and by thy name do many mighty works?
23And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity. ASV
It seems to me that it is more difficult to reach the lost in our current society than it has been in previous years, I suppose that the Devil is having his way with far too many people who want to believe in God but who do not want to serve Him according to His will -- Romans 6:23,
23 For the wages of sin is death; but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. ASV
John 8:24,
24I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for except ye believe that I am (he), ye shall die in your sins ASV
1 John 1:9-10,
9If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
10If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us. ASV
LEARN OF JESUS CHRIST -- He can save you from sin
Will you consider serving God? Everyone in the world has the same privilege and opportunity, Jesus says; Matt 11:28-30,
28Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
29Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.
30For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light. ASV
THE VALUE OF AND IMPORTANCE OF GOSPEL MEETINGS
1. To teach God’s Word – Luke 8:11; 1 Peter 1:23
2. To call on people to turn from humanly devised names and creeds and turn to the Bible – Acts 11:26; Romans 16:16
3. To call on people to turn become Christians only – Acts 2:38; 11:26
4. To plead for Biblical unity – John 17:17
5. To lead the lost to Christ – 2 Peter 3:5; Titus 2:11
6. To edify the local congregation:
· To ”resist the devil“ and ”draw near to God“ – James 2:7-8
· To encourage Christians to keep themselves ”unspotted“ from worldliness – James 1:27
· Christians may be encouraged to ”maintain good works“ – Titus 3:8
· Christians may be encouraged to “endure till the end and be saved“ - Matthew 10:22
7. To ”let your light shine“ and to show everyone that we are ”the salt of the earth“ – Matthew 5:13:
· That we may build our influence for good in the community –
· That we may encourage others to be Christ-like, as we already are.
· To show that we ”love our neighbor“ - Luke 10:27, ”And he answering said, Thou shall love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbor as thyself.“ ASV

… FAITHFULNESS IS REQUIRED …
One of the most difficult problems that I see as a gospel preacher is the problem of individual faithfulness in attendance at the regular services of the congregation by the membership. It seems that wherever I have been privileged to work among brethren that there has been a large percentage of the members that cannot make it to but one service of the church each week, Sunday morning.
WHAT IS GOING ON?
Whatever the reason for these that are absent for many of the occasions when the church comes together, there is surely some reason. As we consider the reasons/excuses that are offered for our failure to attend services regularly, will they be acceptable to God? Remember this, we will someday answer to God for how we have acted toward the relationship that we have with HIM – cf.
Romans 14:11-12, ”11 For it is written, As I live, saith the Lord, to me every knee shall bow, And every tongue shall confess to God. 12 So then each one of us shall give account of himself to God.“ (ASV)
Perhaps some do not consider the other assemblies of the church as being important. Yet, the other meetings of the church are occasions for study and fellowship, why should these activities be less significant to us that the meeting at 10:30 AM on Lord’s Day> Are not all occasions that we get together considered as worship to God? Of course they are, we know that – cf. John 4:24, ”God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship in spirit and truth.“ (ASV)
SCHEDULED MEETINGS
The leadership of the congregation arranges the times for the worship sessions; Bible study, gospel meetings, and other special studies. All meetings are designed for the members and their families and guests to assemble. The meetings are therefore ”good works“ that are available for every member to participate. Since we know the Scripture teaches us that ”good works“ ought to be pursued by all Christians, we understand that we ought to participate. If we know that we ought to participate, how can we explain the following Scriptures?
Hebrews 10:23-26, ”23 let us hold fast the confession of our hope that it waver not; for he is faithful that promised: 24 and let us consider one another to provoke unto love and good works;
25 not forsaking our own assembling together, as the custom of some is, but exhorting (one another); and so much the more, as ye see the day drawing nigh.
26 For if we sin willfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more a sacrifice for sins,“ (ASV)
James 4:17, ”To him therefore that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.“ (ASV)
ALWAYS BE FAITHFUL IN ALL THINGS – ATTENDANCE TOO

{SERMON - With Transparency Master at conclusion}
CONFLICT BETWEEN THE DEVIL AND THE LORD'S CHURCH
INTRODUCTION:
A. Text: Revelation 3:11-13, > "1I come quickly: hold fast that which thou hast, that no one take thy crown. > 12 He that overcometh, I will make him a pillar in the temple of my God, and he shall go out thence no more: and I will write upon him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, the new Jerusalem, which cometh down out of heaven from my God, and mine own new name. > 13 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith to the churches." ASV
- If he can, the evil one would like to hinder the gospel from being spread -- 1 Thessalonians 2:18, "because we would fain have come unto you, I Paul once and again; and Satan hindered us." ASV
- He is intelligent enough to be very subtle and shrewd in his attempt to obstruct our progress in the Lord's work -- Genesis 3:1-2, > "1 Now the serpent was more subtle than any beast of the field which Jehovah God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of any tree of the garden? > 2 And the woman said unto the serpent, Of the fruit of the trees of the garden we may eat. 2 Corinthians 11:3, "But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve in his craftiness, your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity and the purity that is toward Christ." ASV
- The result is that we may attend to certain of the devil's "diversionary tactics" -- all the while overlooking some of the things that are really holding us back.
- There are some challenges that any congregation of Christians must meet in order to serve the Lord faithfully. I.
I. A CONGREGATION MUST REMEMBER WHAT Its WORK IS: SOWING THE SEED
- It requires constant discipline to stick to our work and let the Lord do His. Cf. Jeremiah 7:27, "And thou shall speak all these words unto them; but they will not hearken to thee: thou shall also call unto them; but they will not answer thee." Ezekiel 2:7, "And thou shall speak my words unto them, whether they will hear, or whether they will forbear; for they are most rebellious." ASV
- It is our work to "plant" and "water"; it is the Lord's work to give the "increase"
1 Corinthians 3:6, "I planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase." ASV
- Ultimately, the Lord will want to know not how many people we baptized, but how many people were left in our community that we never confronted with the gospel.
- We are constantly tempted to bypass the work of seed sowing or to believe that we are doing "enough" -- we must resist both of these temptations.
- We need to be a congregation from which the gospel "sounds forth" -- 1 Thessalonians 1:8, "For from you hath sounded forth the word of the Lord, not only in Macedonia and Achaia, but in every place your faith to God-ward is gone forth; so that we need not to speak anything."
II. A CONGREGATION MUST LIVE ABOVE PETTINESS
- It requires constant discipline to keep away from "itsy-bitsy thinking."
- Selfishness, gossip, and factionalism are the curse of the Lord's work in many places. Philippians 2:3-4, "3 (doing) nothing through faction or through vainglory, but in lowliness of mind each counting other better than himself; > 4 not looking each of you to his own things, but each of you also to the things of others." ASV
Philippians 4:2, "I exhort Euodia, and I exhort Syntyche, to be of the same mind in the Lord." ASV
- We need a sense of proportion and priorities.
- It is disastrous to "major in minors."
- We must be able to see the largeness and importance of the work we are doing in comparison to our own personal concerns - Philippians 1:12-18, "12 Now I would have you know, brethren, that the things (which happened) unto me have fallen out rather unto the progress of the gospel; 13 so that my bonds became manifest in Christ throughout the whole praetorian guard, and to all the rest; 14 and that most of the brethren in the Lord, being confident through my bonds, are more abundantly bold to speak the word of God without fear. 15 Some indeed preach Christ even of envy and strife; and some also of good will: 16 the one (do it) of love, knowing that I am set for the defense of the gospel; 17 but the other proclaim Christ of faction, not sincerely, thinking to raise up affliction for me in my bonds. 18 What then? only that in every way, whether in pretence or in truth, Christ is proclaimed; and therein I rejoice, yea, and will rejoice." ASV
- the Lord's work is about co-operation : Philippians 1:27, "Only let your manner of life be worthy of the gospel of Christ: that, whether I come and see you or be absent, I may hear of your state, that ye stand fast in one spirit, with one soul striving for the faith of the gospel;" ASV the emphasis is on "together" in : Ephesians 2:19-22, "19 So then ye are no more strangers and sojourners, but ye are fellow-citizens with the saints, and of the household of God, 20 being built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the chief corner stone; 21 in whom each several building, fitly framed together, groweth into a holy temple in the Lord; 22 in whom ye also are builded together for a habitation of God in the Spirit.'' ASV Ephesians 4:16, "from whom all the body fitly framed and knit together through that which every joint supplieth, according to the working in (due) measure of each several part, maketh the increase of the body unto the building up of itself in love." ASV
III. A CONGREGATION MUST BELIEVE IT CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN ITS COMMUNITY
- It requires constant discipline to be confident we can bring about significant changes for good where we live.
- Without some hope (desire + expectation), our work will cease altogether.
- When Christ sets before us an "open door" Revelation 3:8, "I know thy works (behold, I have set before thee a door opened, which none can shut), that thou hast a little power, and didst keep my word, and didst not deny my name." ASV no one can shut it.
- We simply must keep in mind that He who is in us is greater than he who is in the world - 1 John 4:4, "Ye are of God, (my) little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you than he that is in the world." ASV
IV. A CONGREGATION MUST MAINTAIN GRATITUDE FOR ITS BLESSINGS
- It requires constant discipline to emphasize the positive rather than the negative aspects of our congregational situation.
- Few congregations have had more problems than Corinth - 1 Corinthians 1:4-9, "4 I thank my God always concerning you, for the grace of God which was given you in Christ Jesus; 5 that in everything ye were enriched in him, in all utterance and all knowledge; 6 even as the testimony of Christ was confirmed in you: 7 so that ye come behind in no gift; waiting for the revelation of our Lord Jesus Christ; 8 who shall also confirm you unto the end, (that ye be) unreproveable in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 God is faithful, through whom ye were called into the fellowship of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord". ASV
CONCLUSION:
- We must determine to meet these challenges successfully. But we must have the honesty to see temptation for what it is and arm ourselves against it -- Ephesians 6:10-11, ”10 Finally, be strong in the Lord, and in the strength of his might. 11 Put on the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil." ASV
- Our salvation is nearer than when we first believed -- Romans 13:11-12, "11 And this, knowing the season, that already it is time for you to awake out of sleep: for now is salvation nearer to us than when we (first) believed. 12 The night is far spent, and the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armor of light." ASV
Hebrews 4:1, "Let us fear therefore, lest haply, a promise being left of entering into his rest, any one of you should seem to have come short of it." ASV
- We must not let the devil rob us of our salvation: Revelation 3:11, "I come quickly: hold fast that which thou hast, that no one takes thy crown." (ASV)

THE SEVEN CHURCHES OF Asia
Revelation 1:4-3:22
INTRODUCTION:
Perhaps no study of the relationship Christ sustains to his church is more revealing than is a study of the Seven Churches of Asia. The first three chapters of the Revelation are not at all difficult to understand although other portions of the book contain some difficult material. In this study, we will observe certain relationships that Christ expects a congregation to sustain with Him.
Biblical scholars have placed various figurative interpretations on the contents of these messages to the seven churches, I cannot agree with mush of their view. Such fanciful speculations as, ”the seven churches represent seven ages of the church on earth“; such is speculative theology without sufficient grounds to take seriously. There is no reason to apply more or less than is implied by the Holy Spirit in the context of the Scripture that we will be using in this study. Indeed, there lessons contained in these passages which may assist us in living as Christ would have us in a congregation of God’s people. Yet, we must not take passages out of context with the intent of upholding a preconceived philosophy, to do so would surely be a violation of Revelation 22:18-20, ”18 I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, if any man shall add unto them, God shall add unto him the plagues which are written in this book: 19 and if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part from the tree of life, and out of the holy city, which are written in this book. 20 He who testifieth these things saith, Yea: I come quickly. Amen: come, Lord Jesus.“ (ASV)
In this age of liberalism, modernism, atheism, and other isms; we are too careful sometimes about offenses that we might create rather than seeking the simple and sure truth of a passage. Consequently, let us observe a fact about the language and intent of the speaker (i.e. Jesus Christ) to the seven churches of Asia. In the dialogue to the churches here Jesus did not generalize in his instructions and charges, he specified by name those that were offensive to him in the churches. Not only did he name the individuals and the specific problems he offered solutions and eventual rewards or punishment. So, my dear friends, when we are reluctant to specify the person or the problem that exist you are not imitating Christ’s example, and we know that we are to follow Him.

PRELIMINARY OBSERVATIONS:
Before we become involved in the textual study of the individual congregations let us observe certain facts in the text that may aid us in understanding this important study.
1. FACTS ABOUT THE VISION JOHN SAW:
· ”Seven golden candlesticks“ are explained in the text at 1:20 as ”seven churches.“
· ”One in the midst of them“ at 1:13-18 indicates the presence of the Lord among the churches.
· ”Seven stars in his right hand“ at 1:20 in all probability refers to the messengers of the seven churches.
· ”A two-edged sword proceeding out of His mouth“ at 1:16 evidently refers to the Word delivered (i.e. proceeding) out of the mouth of the Lord.
NOTE;
There are two passages elsewhere that imply this point - Heb 4:12 & Eph 6:17
2. THE POSSIBLE MEANING OF THE VISION:
· John saw a vivid picture of the majesty of the Lord in the midst of the churches.
· Christ was delivering a literal message to the seven churches in contents. We must not allegorize or metaphorical try to alter the message as some have, but accept the truth contained there.
· The congregations mentioned were real established churches and their spiritual condition is clearly revealed in the texts.
· We must never use any of these contexts to support a purely speculative idea or philosophy.
3. THE CHURCHES DISCUSSED WERE ALL LOCATED IN ASIA MINOR:
· Ephesus, Pergamos, Thyatira, Sardis Philadelphia, Smyrna, and Laodicea (Rev 1:11).
· These seven churches were established through Paul’s work.
· The term ”seven“ does not mean that there were only seven congregations in Asia Minor, there was also a congregation at Colosse (i.e. see the book of Colossians).
4. THE ETERNAL VALUE OF THESE MESSAGES FOR MANKIND:
· The messages contained in each letter were primarily intended for the church named (i.e. see Rev. 1:11).
· These messages were preserved and included in the New Testament through divine providence, for man’s instruction throughout the future ages.
· These messages give us insight into the relationship that exists between the Lord and his people. Perhaps this is one of the eternal truths contained in these messages, and perhaps that is why the record of the seven churches is retained in the completed New Testament (i.e. the Bible).
· Unquestionably, the Lord intended that all future generations may have this record and seek to avoid the problems and imitate the successes of the congregations listed.
========================================
EPHESUS – Revelation 2:1-7
========================================
The first congregation mentioned in the text is Ephesus. The historical and geographical conditions relating to Ephesus may give us some insight into their relationship to the Lord and reasons for the condition addressed in the letter.
The city of Ephesus was situated within the borders of the Roman province of Asia Minor and was one of the wealthy and magnificent cities in the country. The world famous temple of Diana (i.e. the pagan goddess) was located in Ephesus and was considered one of the wonders of the ancient world. The apostle Paul would have journeyed there during his second journey but was providentially hindered cf. Acts 16:6). During the latter stages of his second journey, Paul did stop at Ephesus (cf. Acts 18:19-20). On Paul’s third journey, he spent three years with the church in Ephesus (cf. Acts 19:10; 20:31). The letter to the Corinthians was written from Ephesus by Paul (cf. 1 Cor 16:8-9). It is also interesting to note that Timothy worked with the church at Ephesus (cf. 1 Timothy 1:3). The apostle John (i.e. the author of the Revelation) also spent some of the last years of his life at Ephesus (i.e. tradition has it that John spent the last few years of his life after being released from Patmos at Ephesus). Other Christians who were involved in the work at Ephesus were Aquilla, Priscilla, and Apollos)
CHRIST’S MESSAGE TO EPHESUS
1. Christ begins by commending them for specific accomplishments:
· For their diligence in duty – v. 2-3
· For their patience in suffering – v. 2
· For their zeal against evil
2. Then Jesus turns to rebuke them for failures; even though there were good things that he had found in them. Christ says, they had ”left their first love“ The seriousness of the charge has been well stated by Mr. Lenski, he says; ”the condition in Ephesus, the decline of the first love as manifested by the lessening of their first ”works“ (cf. verse 5), was evidence of a decline in faith and in faithfulness to the Word. This decline had not proceeded to the extent of accepting those that called themselves apostles while they were nothing of the kind, among them the Nicolatans (cf. Verse 6). Love was not completely absent, bu the first love had been left. This was an alarming sign. For love ought to grow the longer we know Christ, the more we make His Word our own“ (Lenski - pp, 89).
ADVICE AND COUNCIL EXTENDED TO THIS CHURCH
1. To those who had ”left their first love“ Christ says to them to ”remember from which they had fallen.“ Christ suggests that they compare their currant state with their first state and return to that first state.
The Lord suggests repentance, return to their first love (i.e. do their first works). They must start anew; they must recover their first zeal and revive the things that they had allowed to become secondary in their lives as Christians. They must remember the admonition, ”seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness…“
2. The good advice is enforced and urged by severe threatening (i.e. they must heed the admonitions in each case). The Lord also gave them some further encouragement when He stated, ”But this thou hast, that thou hatest the deeds of the Nicolatanes, which also I hate.“ (cf. Verse 6).
CONCLUSION:
Christ issues a call to attention (i.e. to heed the admonition in each detail). No doubt, the particular statement applied to the church at Ephesus un their circumstances. Yet, the need to heed the truth that involves this congregation must surely have a secondary application to all churches of Christ throughout the world for all time. Christ further tells those that ”overcome“ the evil that they will receive a reward- cf. Revelation 2:7, ”He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith to the churches. To him that overcometh, to him will I give to eat of the tree of life, which is in the Paradise of God.“ ASV
=======================================
SMYRNA – Revelation 2:8-11
=======================================
The second congregation in the study is Smyrna; again, let us look at the historical and geographical conditions there. The city of Smyrna was a great center of trade in Asia Minor, it stood on a deep gulf about 35 miles to the North of Ephesus. Smyrna was like Ephesus in that she was a city of wealth and commercial greatness. Smyrna was also an outstandingly beautiful city; it laid claim to the title, ”the glory of Asia.“ Smyrna had been built in the 4th Century BCE. Within the city of Smyrna, there were no less than five heathen temples that had been erected to the false gods. In Smyrna, temples had been erected to Cybele, Apollo, Askkelopois, Aphrodite, and Zenus (i.e. all were cherished idols of the Gentiles). The great philosopher Homer lived here in Smyrna; a great statue of Homer was therefore erected within the city. An extremely revealing statement about Smyrna was made by Mommsen (i.e. the Historian), ”Smyrna is a city of municipal vanity (i.e. pride).“
Smyrna possessed two characteristics that made life for Christians a constant peril:
1. Smyrna was one of the great centers of Caesar worship:
· As far back as 196 BCE Smyrna has been the first city in the world to erect a temple to DEA ROMA (i.e. the goddess of Rome).
· In 26 CE Smyrna strove with six other cities in Asia Minor for the right to erect a temple to the godhead of Tiberius Caesar – and won the right.
2. Smyrna also possessed one of the largest Jewish communities in Asia Minor:
· A historical documents we fine that the Jews provided the authorities with false reports of the Christian activities.
· In his book (i.e. Daily Study Bible, cf. Rev. 1); William Barclay says, ”Polycarp, one of the early bishops of the church in Smyrna was burned because of false information provided by Jews.“ There are additional references in the ”Seven Churches of Asia“ by James M. Tolle, p 10)
These two factors made life extremely difficult for Christians in the city of Smyrna. It should be taken into consideration that this was the condition in Smyrna when one studies the letter to the church there.
CHARACTER AND CONDITION OF THE CHURCH AT SMYRNA:
The character and condition of the church in Smyrna is discussed in Revelation 2:9-10, ”9 I know thy tribulation, and thy poverty (but thou art rich), and the blasphemy of them that say they are Jews, and they art not, but are a synagogue of Satan. 10 Fear not the things which thou art about to suffer: behold, the devil is about to cast some of you into prison, that ye may be tried; and ye shall have tribulation ten days. Be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee the crown of life.“ (ASV) The Lord took note of their circumstances and stated that although they were poor materially, they were rich spiritually. It is much more desirable with the Lord that Christians be rich spiritually than materially. God cares little for the materialistic person but is greatly pleased with the person inclined to righteousness. Christ told them that he was aware of their tribulation and poverty. It would seem that persecution would be a common occurrence for the faithful in Smyrna due to conditions that existed there. It would also seem reasonable to assume that the individuals who practiced the religion of Jesus would be poor because of the oppression from idolaters, Caesar worshippers, and the Jews. Christ further points out that he is aware of those in Smyrna who professes to be religious but is in reality ”the synagogues of Satan (i.e. those attending Jewish synagogues in Smyrna).
FUTURE TRIALS AND SUFFERING:
Christ then inform them of future trials and approaching troubles at Revelation 2:10, ”Fear not the things which thou art about to suffer: behold, the devil is about to cast some of you into prison, that ye may be tried; and ye shall have tribulation ten days. Be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee the crown of life.“ (ASV) Their previous persecution had been of a nature that had left them poor and subjected them to much tribulation. Now he informs them that it will get even worse, now some of them would be cast into prison for their religious convictions. The Lord does not leave them hopeless, for he says, ”fear none of those things.“ Christ further assures that this new phase of persecution would be relatively short, ”ten days.“ And to further encourage them He offers a glorious reward for their faithfulness - ”Be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee the crown of life. Finally, Christ says to them, heed the admonitions, overcome the persecution and they will not be hurt of the second death (i.e. cast into the lake of fire – Revelation 20:14, ”And death and Hades were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death, (even) the lake of fire.“ (ASV)
CONCLUSION:
The Christians in Smyrna were abused and mistreated (i.e. persecuted), suffered severe poverty, and subjected to severe tribulations but they were faithful. The Lord had no condemnation for this persecuted but faithful church.
=======================================
PERGAMOS – Revelation 2:12-17
=======================================
The third church is our study is Pergamos, again, let us look at the historical and geographical setting. The city of Pergamos was a capitol city; from 231 to 133 BCE the city of Pergamos had been the capitol of the Attalid Kingdom, which was one of the parts into which the Empire of Alexander the Great splintered. In 133 BCE, it dying king had willed it into the passion of the Roman Empire. The city of Pergamos had therefore become part of the Roman Empire, not by unwilling conquest and compulsion, but by choice. The Romans therefore made it the capitol city of the province of Asia Minor and that distinction she held until 130CE.
The city of Pergamos was also blessed with one of the largest libraries in the world (the only library larger was in the city of Alexandria); the library in Pergamos had no less than 200,000 volumes. The word parchment has apparently volume to us from the name, ”Pergamos.“ (hist. Parchment was the material upon which a great deal of early writing was used, particularly during this period of history).
Pergamos, was also a famous center of heathen (worship. In out text the writer calls Pergamos the place ”where Satan’s seat is,“ Revelation 2:13, ” I know where thou dwellest, (even) where Satan's throne is; and thou holdest fast my name, and didst not deny my faith, even in the days of Antipas my witness, my faithful one, who was killed among you, where Satan dwelleth.“ (ASV) Pergamos was the center of Askeleplos worship, the heathen god of healing. Pergamos had always gloried in the fact that it was the last outpost of civilization. Beyond it lay the wild territories of the uncivilized Celts. Pergamos was therefore proud of the worship of the Greek gods Two of the greatest shrines to the Greek gods were the shrines erected to Zenus and Athena in Pergamos. Another of those was a great center of Caesar worship. In this study, too, keep these facts in mind; these facts may assist us to better understand the circumstance of the church there.
THE MESSAGE TO PERGAMOS:
The Lord begins the message to Pergamos by reminding them of His knowledge of their position and relationship to the people of Pergamos, He said;
- ”I know where thou dwellest, even where Satan’s seat is.“
- ”Thou holdest fast my name.“ In spite of the conditions in the city, it is apparent from this statement that at least some were still proud to wear the name of Christ.
- ”Antipas“ – This martyr is brought to their attention to let them know that Christ is aware of the degree of suffering brought upon them by their enemies and that regardless of death some continue to hold to His name.
FAILURES OF THE CHURCH:
Christ, after commending the good qualities of the members of the church in Pergamos, then turns to their failures.
- Some were teaching the doctrine of Balaam – Revelation 2:14, ”But I have a few things against thee, because thou hast there some that hold the teaching of Balaam, who taught Balak to cast a stumbling block before the children of Israel, to eat things sacrificed to idols, and to commit fornication.“ (ASV) The reference here to the doctrine of Balaam surely has an application to the congregation as a whole. The doctrine of Balaam is a reference to the Old Testament character - Numbers 31:16, ”Behold, these caused the children of Israel, through the counsel of Balaam, to commit trespass against Jehovah in the matter of Peor, and so the plague was among the congregation of Jehovah.“ (ASV) - 2 Peter 2:15, ”forsaking the right way, they went astray, having followed the way of Balaam the (son) of Beor, who loved the hire of wrong-doing;“ (ASV) In the Scriptural account of the deeds of Balaam we find that he taught Balak to lead Israel into sin that they might be cursed for the sin. The reference to this man and his doctrine here evidently means that some in the congregation at Pergamos we attempting to lead the faithful into sinful practices.
- Some members of the church at Pergamos were influenced to follow the doctrine of the Nicolaitans Revelation 2:15, ”So hast thou also some that hold the teaching of the Nicolaitans in like manner.“ (ASV)
NOTE:
In my research it would seem that the doctrine of the Nicolaitans consisted in the sanctioning of fornication and eating of meats offered to idols (i.e. which meets created a stumbling-block in the hearts of the week Christians. Cf. ”Dictionary of Religious Terms by D.T. Kauffman, p 311.
As Christ has to the previous churches the Lord offers the members of the church an eternal reward if the errors are corrected but leaves the impression that those who do not repent of their evil will be lost. – cf. Revelation 2:16-17, ”16 Repent therefore; or else I come to thee quickly, and I will make war against them with the sword of my mouth. 17 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith to the churches. To him that over-cometh, to him will I give of the hidden manna, and I will give him a white stone, and upon the stone a new name written, which no one knoweth but he that receiveth it.“ (ASV)
=======================================
THYATIRA – Revelation 2:18-29
=======================================
The fourth congregation in our study is Thyatira. With this church, there is a curious twist; the city with the least importance attached to it in history is extended the longest letter. The city of Thyatira emerged in historical documents in 290 BCE and it emerged as a military center. The military significance of the city rested in the fact that it was the gateway to the capitol city of Asia Minor, Pergamos. Thyatira was also a center of the wool trade and of the dying industry. Apparently Lydia was employed in the dying business. (i.e. she was a seller of purple – perhaps dye or purple cloth; Acts 16:14, ”And a certain woman named Lydia, a seller of purple of the city of Thyatira, one that worshipped God, heard us: whose heart the Lord opened to give heed unto the things which were spoken by Paul.“ (ASV) Therefore Thyatira could have been Lydian’s permanent home.
COMMENDATION:
Thyatira is first commended by the Lord; to this congregation He says:
- ”I know thy works“ The desired for them to know that their good works had not gone unnoticed.
- The Lord especially mentions their ”charity, service, faith, and patience.“
- Christ then commends them for their growth. ”the last works had been greater than their first works.“ Apparently the congregation had progressed, grown some, and accomplished some good generally.
SPIRITUAL PROBLEMS:
After commending the good the Lord then turns to the spiritual problems in the church. The church had several problems that needed to be corrected - Revelation 2:20-23, ”20 But I have (this) against thee, that thou sufferest the woman Jezebel, who calleth herself a prophetess; and she teacheth and seduceth my servants to commit fornication, and to eat things sacrificed to idols. 21 And I gave her time that she should repent; and she willeth not to repent of her fornication. 22 Behold, I cast her into a bed, and them that commit adultery with her into great tribulation, except they repent of her works. 23 And I will kill her children with death; and all the churches shall know that I am he that searcheth the reins and hearts: and I will give unto each one of you according to your works.“ (ASV) The problems mentioned in the church were prevalent among the members but all the members were not condemned for the error – cf. Revelation 2:24, ”24 But to you I say, to the rest that are in Thyatira, as many as have not this teaching, who know not the deep things of Satan, as they are wont to say; I cast upon you none other burden.“ (ASV) Consequently, the faithful were instructed to purge out the evil ones. It is apparent from the statement, ”I will out upon you none other burden“ that the acceptance or rejection of the faithful would depend upon their correcting {i.e. discipline} the guilty members.
JEZEBEL:
A serious problem in the church other than that already mentioned was that woman Jezebel and the fact that they allowed her to corrupt others – cf. Revelation 2:20, ”But I have (this) against thee, that thou sufferest the woman Jezebel, who calleth herself a prophetess; and she teacheth and seduceth my servants to commit fornication, and to eat things sacrificed to idols.“ (ASV) The Lord named this woman who troubled the church of Thyatira Jezebel; therefore her character must be similar to that Old Testament Jezebel – cf.
1 Kings 16:31, ”And it came to pass, as if it had been a light thing for him to walk in the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, that he took to wife Jezebel the daughter of Ethbaal king of the Sidonians, and went and served Baal, and worshipped him.“ (ASV) There have been few women in recorded history who acquired the reputation of wickedness that the Old Testament Jezebel has.
NOTE:
She was the daughter of Ethbaal, King of Sidon, and the wife of Ahab (i.e. see reference above at 1 Kings 16:31). When she came from Sidon she brought with her false gods (i.e. idols), and in so doing caused Ahab and his people to worship Baal. Her wish was not to abolish worship of Jehovah but that the prophets of Jehovah would accept Baal worship as equal with the worship of Jehovah; she desired to add Baal worship. She slew the prophets of God, and at her table supported 450 prophets of Baal – cf. 1 Kings 18:19, ”Now therefore send, and gather to me all Israel unto mount Carmel, and the prophets of Baal four hundred and fifty, and the prophets of the Asherah four hundred, that eat at Jezebel's table.“ (ASV) She also left behind her a reputation of ”whoredom and witchcraft“ – cf. 2 Kings 9:22, ”And it came to pass, when Joram saw Jehu, that he said, is it peace, Jehu? And he answered, what peace, so long as the whoredoms of thy mother Jezebel and her witchcrafts are so many?“ (ASV)
In summation; Jezebel was a notorious and immoral woman who seduced Ahab and the nation of Israel from the worship of the true God. Evidently, that must mean that the Jezebel of Thyatira was an evil and seductive influence on the purity and lifestyle of the Christians in that city.
”Suffereth“ Apparently means that the membership of the church generally allowed this evil woman to spread her evil influence and were doing nothing to hinder or stop her. It is the duty of the church leadership to correct such people as this woman Jezebel. The Lord does not allow evil to go unchecked in the church, He has established means and methods to deal with sin in each congregation –
Galatians 6:1-2, ”1 Brethren, even if a man be overtaken in any trespass, ye who are spiritual, restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness; looking to thyself, lest thou also be tempted. 2 Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.“ (ASV)
2 Thessalonians 3:6, ”Now we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye withdraw yourselves from every brother that walketh disorderly, and not after the tradition which they received of us.“ (ASV)
Romans 16:17, ”Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them that are causing the divisions and occasions of stumbling, contrary to the doctrine which ye learned: and turn away from them.“ (ASV)
James 5:19-20, ”19 My brethren, if any among you err from the truth, and one convert him; 20 let him know, that he who converteth a sinner from the error of his way shall save a soul from death, and shall cover a multitude of sins.“ (ASV)
”I gave her time to repent and she repented not.“ The Lord had extended unto her sufficient time to correct and repent of her evil. The Lord is longsuffering and not willing that anyone should perish but apparently, this woman was unwilling to correct her evil ways – cf. Acts 17:30, ”The times of ignorance therefore God overlooked; but now he commandeth men that they should all everywhere repent:“ (ASV) 2 Peter 3:9, ”The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some count slackness; but is longsuffering to you-ward, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.“ (ASV) Since she refused to correct her evil ways the Lord says –
”I cast her into a bed and them that commit adultery with her:“
The patience of the Lord in her case has come to an end. He will also destroy those with whom she was having evil associations and influences who would not accept the Lord’s invitation to repent. From this passage it seems that the Lord is referring to His casting them into a lake of fire for their evil deeds and their failure to repent.
==================================
REMEMBER THIS:
Romans 6:23, ”For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. KJV)
==================================
”I am he that searchest the reigns and hearts.“ Surely this statement implies the all knowing powers of the speaker (i.e. Jesus Christ). Indeed, the Lord knows the mind of those in Thyatira as he knows the mind of everyone that has ever lived upon the earth – Hebrews 4:12, ”For the word of God is living, and active, and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing even to the dividing of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and quick to discern the thoughts and intents of the heart.“ ASV
CORRECT THE EVIL DOERS:
After these instructions regarding Jezebel and her evil disciples, Christ says to them that He will place no further burden on them than that which they are already instructed to do – reject the woman and her followers, correct them or discipline them. The faithful members of the church at Thyatira could insure the promise of eternal life by correcting the evil ones. If the righteous do not correct or discipline the evil ones, the Lord may charge them with bidding them God’s speed – cf. 2 John 9-11, ”9 Whosoever goeth onward and abideth not in the teaching of Christ, hath not God: he that abideth in the teaching, the same hath both the Father and the Son. 10 If any one cometh unto you, and bringeth not this teaching, receive him not into (your) house, and give him no greeting: 11 for he that giveth him greeting partaketh in his evil works.“ (ASV) A situation similar to the problem here in Thyatira arose in the church at Corinth where Paul instructed them how to handle it – cf.
1 Corinthians 5:1-6, ”1 It is actually reported that there is fornication among you, and such fornication as is not even among the Gentiles, that one (of you) hath his father's wife. 2 And ye are puffed up, and did not rather mourn, that he that had done this deed might be taken away from among you. 3 For I verily, being absent in body but present in spirit, have already as though I were present judged him that hath so wrought this thing, 4 in the name of our Lord Jesus, ye being gathered together, and my spirit, with the power of our Lord Jesus, 5 to deliver such a one unto Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus. 6 Your glorying is not good. Know ye not that a little leaven leaveneth the whole lump?“ (ASV) Paul instructed the faithful to at Corinth to correct it, apparently the disciples at Corinth did correct the adulterous situation – 2 Corinthians 2:6-11, ”6 Sufficient to such a one is this punishment which was (inflicted) by the many; 7 so that contrariwise ye should rather forgive him and comfort him, lest by any means such a one should be swallowed up with his overmuch sorrow. 8 Wherefore I beseech you to confirm (your) love toward him. 9 For to this end also did I write, that I might know the proof of you, whether ye are obedient in all things 10 But to whom ye forgive anything, I (forgive) also: for what I also have forgiven, if I have forgiven anything, for your sakes (have I forgiven it) in the presence of Christ; 11 that no advantage may be gained over us by Satan: for we are not ignorant of his devices.“ (ASV) It is therefore, apparent that the sins in Thyatira were to be corrected by the faithful; otherwise their hope would be jeopardized.
CONCLUSION:
In ending the study of the church at Thyatira Christ encourages the faithful to ”hold fast“ and to overcome that woman Jezebel and her disciples. – Revelation 2:27-29, ”27 and he shall rule them with a rod of iron, as the vessels of the potter are broken to shivers; as I also have received of my Father: 28 and I will give him the morning star. 29 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith to the churches.“ (ASV)

THOUGHTS ABOUT THE REVELATION
=====================================
Dating the Book of Revelation is a difficult task some suggest that it was written before 70 CE yet others agree that it was written about 95 CE.
The book is plainly intended primarily for the seven churches of Asia, but since the messages of the book is relevant to Christians under persecution, and since the book treats of Divine Judgments upon the whole world, the author must surely have intended it to be circulated among Christians.
THE POSSIBLE THEME OF THE BOOK:
The absolute sovereignty of God, and His ultimate purpose to destroy all forms of evil
The inevitable judgment of God upon all evil, upon the worship of false gods, which include riches, power and success.
The necessity for patient endurance, the ultimate security being the knowledge that God is in control of history.
The existence of reality, represented here under symbols as the New Jerusalem, apart and secure from the battles and tribulations of earthly life, promises complete spiritual security of the character of God when He sees Him as He is
NOTE:
The Greek Language of this book is peculiar in construction and is occasionally ungrammatical. Sometimes the vision, for instance, there is a mixing of the past and the present tenses. --- J.B. Phillips

SARDIS – Revelation 3:1-6
=========================================
The fifth church in the list is Sardis. Sardis lay about 30 miles to the Southeast of Thyatira. Sardis was one of the oldest cities in Asia Minor. The city of Sardis had been the capitol of the ancient Kingdom of Lydia, dating back to 560 BCE
The most revealing term to this church is ”watch,“ – Revelation 3:2-3, ”2 Be thou watchful, and establish the things that remain, which were ready to die: for I have found no works of thine perfected before my God. 3 Remember therefore how thou hast received and didst hear; and keep (it), and repent. If therefore thou shalt not watch, I will come as a thief, and thou shalt not know what hour I will come upon thee.“ (ASV) There was a good reason for this admonition based on history. The city of Sardis was situated in such a good military position that it was considered impregnable. The city of Sardis although considered impregnable was overthrown two times in its history (cf. Cyrus was the first and 200 years later Antiochus conquered her again).
The source of the message to this church us the same as to all the churches, Christ. The statement ”he that hath the seven spirits of God, and the seven stars“ is surely a statement that describes Christ.
CONDEMNATION:
The rebuke to this congregation is included in the statement, ”Thou hast a name that thou livest, and are dead.“
Perhaps the church at Sardis had a good reputation for external activities with the general population but in reality were not converted themselves. Such conditions have existed in all ages of the church where outward piety is displayed but in heart they are not right with God – cf. Matt 23:23-28, ”23 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye tithe mint and anise and cumin, and have left undone the weightier matters of the law, justice, and mercy, and faith: but these ye ought to have done, and not to have left the other undone. 24 Ye blind guides, that strain out the gnat, and swallow the camel! 25 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye cleanse the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full from extortion and excess. 26 Thou blind Pharisee, cleanse first the inside of the cup and of the platter, that the outside thereof may become clean also. 27 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which outwardly appear beautiful, but inwardly are full of dead men's bones, and of all uncleanness. 28 Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but inwardly ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.“ (ASV)
- The members of the church at Sardis may have been over stressing outward appearance to the neglect of personal spiritual growth – cf . 2 Peter 3:18, ”But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him (be) the glory both now and for ever. Amen.“ (ASV) There are some church members that put up a good front but they are not wholly converted to the religion of Christ, their lifestyle betrays them. That character we show to the outside world should be the person we are at all times, publicly and privately.
WATCHFULNESS:
After rebuking them, Christ exhorts them to watchfulness. He then says to them ”Remember therefore how thou hast received and heard, and hold fast and repent.“ In this statement, the Lord tells them how they may correct their problems, remember the words they had heard from faithful teacher and apply them to their lives.
THE FAITHFUL ONES:
The Lord also commands the faithful, ”Thou hast a few names in Sardis which have not defiled their garments; and they shall walk with me in white; for they are worthy.“ Apparently, there were some in Sardis that were faithful Christians, perhaps these had been unaware of the hypocrisy of some members of the church. Although Christ promises the faithful a reward, He tells those that had failed to grow, as they should that they would not receive the reward. Christ says to hypocrites, ”I will come on thee as a thief, and thou shall not know what hour I will come upon thee.“ Again Christ encourages the faithful to steadfast and consistent service, saying – cf. Revelation 3:5, ”He that overcometh shall thus be arrayed in white garments; and I will in no wise blot his name out of the book of life, and I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels.“(ASV)
CONCLUSION:
Christ says; ”He that hath an ear, let him hear what the spirit saith unto the churches.“
Commenting on this verse, Mr. Lenski says, ”Everyone has an ear, in fact, two. God gave everyone an ear so that that he may hear. Hence the guilty when one who has an ear does not hear. You, who have an ear, have no excuse. If you do something to your ear so that, hearing, you do not hear when the Lord speaks you stand self-condemned – cf. Matthew 13:15, ”For this people's heart is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes they have closed; Lest haply they should perceive with their eyes, And hear with their ears, And understand with their heart, And should turn again, And I should heal them.“ (ASV) This does not have a double sense; it is not a play on physical and spiritual hearing. However, the aorist signifies; ”Let him actually, effectively hear!“ The Lord always speaks so that he shall be heard effectively.
====================================
PHILADELPHIA – Revelation 3:7-13
====================================
The sixth church in the list is Philadelphia. This church has been called ”the gateway to a great opportunity“ by man commentators.
The city of Philadelphia lay approximately 28 miles southeast of Sardis; the city was founded by Attilus in about 140 BCE. Attilus was ”Philaselphos,“ consequently; the city adopted his name and was called Philadelphia (i.e. city of brotherly love). Philadelphia was situated in such a position that beyond her lay the uncivilized and barbarous hoards. The location that she had was equal to an open door of opportunity for evangelizing those uncivilized peoples.
NOTE:
Another fact of significance about Philadelphia was that the city was situated on the very edge of one of the world’s great volcano areas. The soil was very fertile and the surrounding are became the grape and wine center of Asia Minor. In the earthquake of 17 CE, the city was completely destroyed.
The source of the message to this church is Christ. From the context of the address, it is evident that the Lord is speaking as we examine – cf. Revelation 3:7, ”And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write: These things saith he that is holy, he that is true, he that hath the key of David, he that openeth and none shall shut, and that shutteth and none openeth:“ (ASV)
The description in this verse cannot be speaking but of the Lord, Note:
- ”saith he that is holy – cf. Acts 4:27, ”for of a truth in this city against thy holy Servant Jesus, whom thou didst anoint, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles and the peoples of Israel, were gathered together,“ (ASV)
- ”He that is true“ – cf. John 8:32, ”and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.“ (ASV) John 17:17, ”Sanctify them in the truth: thy word is truth.“ (ASV)
John 12:48, ”He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my sayings, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I spake, the same shall judge him in the last day.“ (ASV)
- ”He that hath the keys of David.“ – cf. Matthew 16:18, ”And I also say unto thee, that thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.“ (ASV)
Matthew 28:18-20, ”18 And Jesus came to them and spake unto them, saying, All authority hath been given unto me in heaven and on earth.
19 Go ye therefore, and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them into the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit:
20 teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I commanded you: and lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world.“ (ASV)
- He that openeth, and no man shutteth; and shutteth and no man openeth.“ – cf. repeating the reference in Matthew 28:18, above …
COMMENDATION:
From the context of the message to Philadelphia, we are unable to detect any condemnation of this congregation at all. Those things mentioned in – cf. Revelation 3:8, ”I know thy works (behold, I have set before thee a door opened, which none can shut), that thou hast a little power, and didst keep my word, and didst not deny my name.“ (ASV) show that the church had made some progress in growth and spirituality. There is no indication that any external or internal problems existed with the membership in their relationship with Christ.
NOTE:
Please observe these facts about the church here:
- ”Thou hast kept my word“ - I cannot imagine a greater compliment that the Lord could bestow upon a congregation of Christians than this phrase.
- ”Thou hast not denied my name.“ - This statement was a great tribute to the faithful members of the church here. It seems that regardless of whatever else was going on in Philadelphia the church members were faithful. Indeed, this city was in a region of idolatry, Caesar worship, and immorality yet the Lord says of them they had not denied HIM.
- ”Thou hast a little strength.“ - Perhaps this statement refers to the ability they collectively possessed as a church; they were not rich and powerful but were still faithful with all that they possessed in talent, and material wealth.
- ”Because thou hast kept the word of my patience.“ – cf. Revelation 3:8, ”I know thy works (behold, I have set before thee a door opened, which none can shut), that thou hast a little power, and didst keep my word, and didst not deny my name.“ (ASV) This reference may refer to their patience endurance and faithfulness to the Lord in spite of the problems with the Jews and various forms of Paganism (i.e. idolatry).
A DOOR OF OPPORTUNITY:
Revelation 3:8, ”I know thy works (behold, I have set before thee a door opened, which none can shut), that thou hast a little power, and didst keep my word, and didst not deny my name.“ (ASV) Christ extends to them an opportunity to do even more in reaching the lost in their area. The ”I have set before thee an open door“ possibly refers to the fact that the opportunity to reach the barbarians would be extended to them. Whatever the ”open door“ was, it is apparent from the context that it afforded the church an opportunity to glorify the Lord. The next phrase, ”none can shut“ seems to refer to the ”open door.“ Assuming that is the correct interpretation, the Lord tells them her that nothing can prevent them from doing the good work available to them.
Revelation 3:9, ”Behold, I give of the synagogue of Satan, of them that say they are Jews, and they are not, but do lie; behold, I will make them to come and worship before thy feet, and to know that I have loved thee.“ (ASV)
Here we have the promise to the congregation that their enemies will be exposed and punished. The ”I come quickly“ of 3:11 apparently refers to the judgment waiting for those of 3:9. It is impossible for the righteous {i.e. ”those that remain faithful unto death“} to loose in the end, the righteous will eventually receive all that the Lord has promised them 3:12. The congregation is guaranteed shelter and divine protection ”in the hour of trial.“ Indeed, God promised to keep them 3:10, and further encourages them to ”hold that fast which thou hast.“ (3:11).
CONCLUSION:
The Lord encourages them to hold fast, and to be faithful. The Lord promises rewards to the faithful that remain until death, the following language seems to be figurative;
”A pillar in the temple of My God“
”Have written on him the name of God“
”Wear the name of the city of my God“
”I will write upon him my new name“
These descriptive phrases apparently mean that the Christians in Philadelphia that continued faithful until death will receive the recognition of the Lord and will receive a place of eternal rest in that everlasting abode of God.
NO CONDEMNATION:
The church at Smyrna and the church at Philadelphia were not censured by the Lord in any way. It is remarkable that the Lord found these churches sound even though they were in such great distress. The message to Smyrna shows clearly that a congregation can be sound regardless of untoward circumstances; surely this is true today, also. Philadelphia seems to be sound in the Lord’s instruction and because of this fact, even greater opportunities are extended to them. Finally, in 3:13 the Lord again repeats the important phrase ”He that hath an ear, let him hear what the spirit saith unto the churches.“
=====================================
LAODICEA – Revelation 3:14-22
=====================================
The seventh church in the list is Laodicea. There is no significance to the order of the churches in the study found in the Revelation (i.e. Rev 1:14-3:22). That Laodicea is the last in the list should not give rise to speculative debate on the theology of that order.
The city of Laodicea lay approximately 43 miles southeast of Philadelphia and nearly 100 miles from Ephesus. Laodicea was one of a group of three towns, which lay within easy sight of each other in the Lycus River Valley. The other two cities were Colosse and Heiropolis. Laodicea was founded in 250 BCE by Antiochus II, and was named after his wife. in that year, 133 BCE Laodicea became part of the Roman Empire. The Romans proceeded to make Laodicea a sizable city. According to secular historians, the Roman governor visited Laodicea often to administer Roman justice. It is also noteworthy that Laodicea had a large Jewish community. In 62 BCE no less than 7,500 adult Jewish males were there. The Jews of Laodicea were able to bring pressure sufficiently powerful that they were able to bring pressure on the Roman rulers to rule in their favor many times. Some further facts about Laodicea follow:
1. Laodicea was a notable wealthy city. It is said that Cicero cashed his letters of credit in the city about 51 BCE (i.e. According to William Barclay).
- In 17 CE Laodicea was devastated by the same earthquake that had laid waste Sardis and Philadelphia; The Roman government made provisions to rebuild the city.
- In 60 CE Laodicea was devastated again but the Laodiceans refused aid from Rome because of their tremendous wealth, they rebuilt the city.
2. A considerable portion of the wealth of Laodicea came from the cloth and clothing industry. The countryside surrounding Laodicea was world famous for a certain type black-woolen sheep.
3. Laodicea was also famous for its medical schools, in particular she was famous for two kinds of medicines:
- A certain kind of salve made of nard which was used to cure sore ears.
- A certain eye powder – the tephra phrygle, the eye powder of Laodicea – This particular powder was held to be a remedy for week and ailing eyes.
NO COMMENDATION:
The church in Laodicea is the first in the list that we have examined which the Lord had nothing good to say. It is therefore proper to say of Laodicea that she is the church which the Lord finds nothing to commend it.
THE LORD CONTINUES TO SPEAK:
Once again the descriptive terms used to identify the speaker can apply to none other but Jesus Christ:
- ”… saith the amen“ (cf. 2 Corinthians 1:20)
- ”… the faithful and true witness“
- ”… the beginning of the creation of God“
NOTE:
At point 3 here, reference is made to Christ’s resurrection from the tomb. Christ was the first to arise from the dead to die no more.
NOTHING GOOD:
1 ”Thou art neither cold or hot, but lukewarm.“
Surely nothing could be more repulsive to the Lord than lukewarm Christians. Apparently the membership in general at Laodicea were self-satisfied, and existed in a general state of apathy.
2. ”Thou are wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked…“
This is a pitiful description of a lukewarm congregation of professed Christians in the wealthiest city of Asia Minor.
Proceeding to 3:20 Christ insists that the membership of the church in Laodicea repent. He says to them: ”Behold, I stand at the door and knock; if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.“ Christ continues: ”He that hath an ear let him hear“ 3:22. This verse looks back to verses 20-21 and encourages attention and correction. The rewards promised in 3:21 are dependant upon positive actions on the part of all.

--- HAVE YOU COUNTED THE COST? ---
Most of us are given to compulsive actions many times as we consider doing right. We are not as careful to count the cost when we are seeking fleshly gratification or personal satisfaction. Yet, to rush head long into anything without considering the ultimate consequences is, at the very least, foolish. I truly think that this is a problem with many people as they consider religious activities or becoming connected to some religious group. Perhaps we all are too quick to pursue some religious relationship on a purely emotional response rather that seriously considering the reason for becoming a part of it. Most of us do not stop and consider the relationship, whether it is biblical based, provable by the Bible, explained honestly to us, and etc. Why are we so careless in choosing a religion? There are so many, have you examined them to see if they are following the Bible?
There are a few very important questions that we ought to consider of any religious movement before we give our time, money, and effort to support it or become an active participant in it. Consider the following six questions:
Ø Does the religious movement that we are considering use the Bible as their standard of authority?
Ø Does the religious movement that we are considering worship God according to Biblical teaching?
Ø Does the religious movement that we are considering use the 66 books of the Bible?
Ø Does the religious movement that we are considering use the Bible's teaching as basis for initiating new members into it?
Ø Is the religious movement that we are considering having a Bible based organizational structure?
Ø Is the religion that we are considering have a Bible based work program that is divinely authorized?
ALL OF THESE QUESTIONS CAN BE ANSWERED BY THOSE OF US THAT MEET HERE AT 4840 CEMETERY ROAD IN HILLIARD, Contact us anytime!
You are welcome to examine us to determine if these things are so.

… HOW TO BUILD A STRONG CHURCH …
Every True Christian wants the congregation that he is a member of to be a sound and strong church, exerting good influence in the community, dwelling together in peace, etc. The only way that this can be achieved is for the membership of the congregation to continue to exert effort to be the kind of growing Christian that Peter admonishes in 2 Peter 3:18, "But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him (be) the glory both now and forever. Amen" {ASV}. Some things that will aid in building a strong, sound church are:
1. STRONG BIBLE PREACHING AND TEACHING:
Acts 20:32, "And now I commend you to God, and to the word of his grace, which is able to build (you) up, and to give (you) the inheritance among all them that are sanctified"
2. EXEMPLARY LEADERSHIP {Good elders}:
1 Peter 5:2-3, > "Tend the flock of God which is among you, exercising the oversight, not of constraint, but willingly, according to (the will of) God; nor yet for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind; > neither as lording it over the charge allotted to you, but making yourselves ensamples to the flock"
3. PURE AND HOLY LIVES BY THE MEMBERSHIP:
Matthew 5:16, "Even so let your light shine before men; that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven" {ASV}. -- Philippians 2:15, "that ye may become blameless and harmless, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom ye are seen as lights in the world" {ASV}.
4. WARM, LOVING AND CONCERNED MEMBERS:
Fellowship in the church should be sweet and precious, it should be visible to the whole community, especially to those that visit the church from throughout the community.
5. COMPASSIONATE HEARTS:
Galatians 6:9-10, > "And let us not be weary in well-doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not. > So then, as we have opportunity, let us work that which is good toward all men, and especially toward them that are of the household of the faith" {ASV}.
6. EVANGELISTIC ZEAL:
Acts 5:42, "And every day, in the temple and at home, they ceased not to teach and to preach Jesus (as) the Christ" {ASV}. -- Acts 8:4, "They therefore that were scattered abroad, went about preaching the word" {ASV}.
7. AN "I want to serve" ATTITUDE AMONG ALL THE MEMBERS:
People serving the Lord because they love Him and want to glorify Him -- not because they feel they have to do something, sometime.
8. A DISPOSITION OF HAPPINESS, FRIENDLINESS, COOPERATION, HOSPATILITY, AND CORDIALITY:
No stranger should ever come into the midst of the Lord's church without being greeted and
welcomed by a happy, friendly membership!

THE CHURCH AT CORINTH
Compiled by Garreth L. Clair
TEXT: 1 Corinthians 1:1-9 INTRODUCTION: Churches of the first century were much like churches of today in that they possessed individual characteristics that differed widely. The church at Corinth was one of the most troubled congregations discussed in the New Testament. The church at Corinth was troubled by a variety of problems; the apostle Paul addresses these problems severely in his first letter to them. In the other churches that we have already studied, we have seen some of them that were troubled but none with so many problems as Corinth. We will examine these problems and Paul's suggestions for solving them as examples for us today: BODY:
I. BAD CHARACTERISTICS OF THE OF THE CORINTHIAN CHURCH:·
Division - 1:10, 11 -- over who had taught them and/or baptized them and elevated themselves because of that person -- vs.13-17 - Paul calls it immature --
1 Cor 3:1-3 - and tells them they all belong to and must serve Christ.·
Judging - 4:1-5 -- making distinctions {i.e., judging one another's value} in the relative value of disciples, which none of us are qualified to do.· Immorality - 5:1, 2 -- actually the problem is the attitude of the church in ignoring this evil and endangering the church - vs. 6·
Lawsuits - 6:1 -- it is already a loss when brethren are unwilling to be defrauded instead of insisting upon their rights - vs. 7 - but they cannot agree, they should not go before the world, but a wise brother - vs. 5, 6·
Marriage - 7:1-3 -- some were using sex as a weapon -- vs. 3-5 - others wanted to leave their unbelieving mate when converted -- vs.10-13 -- both of which Paul condemned.·
Eating meats - 8:1 -- Paul explains that all food is clean - vs. 4, 8 - yet warn them not to abuse their liberty to the harm of a weak brother, which is sin - vs. 9-13.·
The covering custom at Corinth -- 11:4, 5 - there was contention concerning this question v.16.·
Lord's Supper - 11:17-20 -- some were having a banquet rather than the prescribed emblems for the Lord's supper - v. 22 - Paul reminds them of its real purpose, to proclaim Christ -
v. 26.·
Spiritual gifts - 12:1 -- some were bragging about their gifts in comparison with other disciples' gifts - vs.12-31 -- they had forgotten that the purpose of the gifts was edification -- 1 Cor 14:26 II.
PAUL'S RECOMMENDATIONS FOR CORRECTION -- 16:13, 14:
A. Be on the alert - watch for these attitudes, especially in ourselves
B. Stand firm in the faith - our depend upon Christ, not ourselves Galatians 5:1-41 For freedom did Christ set us free: stand fast therefore, and be not entangled again in a yoke of bondage. 2 Behold, I Paul say unto you, that, if ye receive circumcision, Christ will profit you nothing. 3 Yea, I testify again to every man that receiveth circumcision, that he is a debtor to do the whole law. 4 Ye are severed from Christ, ye would be justified by the law; ye are fallen away from grace. 1 Cor 15:1-4
C. Act like men -- as opposed to children -- 1 Cor 3:1-3
D. Be strong -- against these temptations
E. Let all be done in love -- common thread from each -- 1 Cor 13 CONCLUSION: We need to learn that we are to love one another and seek to please God in all things -- Revelation 3:1-4, ”1 And to the angel of the church in Sardis write: These things saith he that hath the seven Spirits of God, and the seven stars: I know thy works, that thou hast a name that thou livest, and thou art dead. 2 Be thou watchful, and establish the things that remain, which were ready to die: for I have found no works of thine perfected before my God. 3 Remember therefore how thou hast received and didst hear; and keep (it), and repent. If therefore thou shalt not watch, I will come as a thief, and thou shalt not know what hour I will come upon thee. 4 But thou hast a few names in Sardis that did not defile their garments: and they shall walk with me in white; for they are worthy. ” ASV

IS LOVE ENOUGH?
Editorial
It is not uncommon to hear from individuals that we discuss the Lord, His church, salvation from sin, etc. say, "surely God loves everyone and would not send anyone to a burning hell!" Well, just what does the Bible say about love? Let us examine the teaching of the Bible on its concept of love. The word is used in a number of ways but we will limit our study to two uses of the word in the Greek from which they have been translated into "love" and "brotherly love" in the Bible.
1. Love is first of all a quality of God, agapao is that disposition to seek the good of
others without being primed to do so -- love
Is unsolicited goodness extended toward everyone, all the time.
LOVE (NOUN AND VERB)
"Love had its perfect expression among men in the Lord Jesus Christ, 2 Cor 5:14; Eph 2:4; 3:19; 5:2; Christian love is the fruit of His Spirit in the Christian, Gal 5:22.
LOVE (NOUN AND VERB)
agapao NT:25 and the corresponding noun agape (B, No. 1 below) present "the characteristic word of Christianity, and since the Spirit of revelation has used it to express ideas previously unknown, inquiry into its use, whether in Greek literature or in the Septuagint, throws but little light upon its distinctive meaning in the NT. Cf, however, Lev 19:18; Deut 6:5.
"Agape and agapao are used in the NT (a) to describe the attitude of God toward His Son, John 17:26; the human race, generally, John 3:16; Rom 5:8, and to such as believe on the Lord Jesus Christ particularly John 14:21; (b) to convey His will to His children concerning their attitude one toward another, John 13:34, and toward all men, 1 Thess 3:12; 1 Cor 16:14; 2 Peter 1:7; (c) to express the essential nature of God, 1 John 4:8.
"Love" can be known only from the actions it prompts. God's love is seen in the gift of His Son, 1 John 4:9,10. But obviously this is not the love of complacency, or affection, that is, it was not drawn out by any excellency in its objects, Rom 5:8. It was an exercise of the divine will in deliberate choice, made without assignable cause save that which lies in the nature of God Himself, Cf. Deut 7:7,8.
(from Vine's Expository Dictionary of Biblical Words, Copyright (c) 1985, Thomas Nelson Publishers)
2. Love is also defined as man's absolute willingness to obey God's
instructions all the time. This is important to
the person that believes that God's love will
overlook disobedience, apathy, and insincerity. Please observe the following facts about the Greek word as it is correctly translated in the following passages:
LOVE (NOUN AND VERB)
"Christian love has God for its primary object, and expresses itself first of all in implicit obedience to His commandments, John 14:15,21,23; 15:10; 1 John 2:5; 5:3; 2 John 6. Self-will, that is, self-pleasing, is the negation of love to God.
John 14:15,
15 If ye love me, ye will keep my commandments. ASV
John 14:21,
21 He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself unto him. ASV
John 14:23,
23 Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my word: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him. ASV
John 15:10,
10 If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in his love. ASV
1 John 2:5
5 but whoso keepeth his word, in him verily hath the love of God been perfected. Hereby we know that we are in him: ASV
1 John 5:3,
3 For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous. ASV
2 John 6,
6 And this is love, that we should walk after his commandments. This is the commandment, even as ye heard from the beginning, that ye should walk in it. ASV
(from Vine's Expository Dictionary of Biblical Words, Copyright (c)1985, Thomas Nelson Publishers)
CONSIDER THIS:
If man truly loves God and will do God's commandments God will reward that person but the person that refuses to do, God's commands regardless of the reason cannot expect God's reward {i.e., heaven}. Indeed, God does love mankind, that is clearly taught in the Scriptures cf., John 3:16, but to suggest that God will treat the disobedient and evil person the same way that He treats a holy and devout follower is nothing short of blasphemy.
RECOMMENDATION
One of the important considerations that students of the Bible are to consider is to always teach the Bible in its context. Teachers of the Bible are duty bound to lay aside personal preferences, prejudices, and intimidations from others in favor of interpreting the Scripture true as God intendeds that it be interpreted. For any teacher, regardless of his or her position, to become influenced by anything other than the sovereign God in teaching the truth is an evil unequaled in the annals of history. Yet, today in many religious circles the wickedness of men in high ecclesiastic positions are continually involved in the process of changing, altering in subtitle ways, and outright denying the inspiration of the Holy Scriptures, thereby bringing the damnation of a Holy God upon them:
Revelation 22:18-19,
18 I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, if any man shall add unto them, God shall add unto him the plagues which are written in this book:
19 and if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part from the tree of life, and out of the holy city, which are written in this book. ASV
THE SINCERE SEEKER OF TRUTH
Let me speak freely to the honest and honorable seeker of "truth" -- the truth is understandable and available to you. God's Written Word is as understandable today as it has been in past ages. The difference in current religious dialogue and religious dialogue of past ages is the amount of false teachers, false literature, and quantity and quality of today's false teachers, there is a greater number of each today than there has been in past ages, why? because the population of the world has increased. Since this is true, we {i.e., those of us that desire truth about Divine and human relationship} must constantly be aware of this problem of disbelief and the peddlers of religious misinformation. It is no wonder then that so many people are turning from these false religion peddlers. There is another answer folks!
PURSUE THE TRUTH MY FRIEND
Many people have turned away from the truth too soon in my humble opinion. Truth is still available, understandable, and has the same Divine origin that you used to believe that it did, the purveyors of false information have been and are more persuasive today than they were in previous generations. Why? Because of their use of electronic media and the printed media, these purveyors of false religious doctrines and their
subtle justification of wicked and immoral causes and persons have soured many honest people on all religion. My friend, the truth is still the truth regardless of and in spite of these false teachers. Please note the following verses of scripture, the verses are still the verses you grew up with as a youth -- they still mean the same thing.
John 8:32,
32 and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. ASV
John 17:17,
17 Sanctify them in the truth: thy word is truth. ASV
1 Thessalonians 2:13,
13And for this cause we also thank God without ceasing, that, when ye received from us the word of the message, (even the word) of God, ye accepted (it) not (as) the word of men, but, as it is in truth, the word of God, which also worketh in you that believe. ASV
Remember this fact, you do not have to abandon religion, you simply need to look at the source of real truth, the Bible and follow it alone. If you will do this simple exercise, you can "know the truth" and that knowledge will lead you to do whatever God desires for you to do.
THE BIBLE
IS A PERFECT AND INFALLIBLE GUIDE
FOR HUMANKIND
Today the doubters scoff at the people who still insist that the Bible is the infallible Written, Word of God but that does not change the fact, it really is. If one doubts that the Bible is infallible, one need but examine its contents. Note the following verses:
1 Thessalonians 2:13,
13And for this cause we also thank God without ceasing, that, when ye received from us the word of the message, (even the word) of God, ye accepted (it) not (as) the word of men, but, as it is in truth, the word of God, which also worketh in you that believe. ASV
2 Timothy 4:2-4,
2preach the word; be urgent in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching.
3For the time will come when they will not endure the sound doctrine; but, having itching ears, will heap to themselves teachers after their own lusts;
4and will turn away their ears from the truth, and turn aside unto fables. ASV
James 1:21-23,
21Wherefore putting away all filthiness and overflowing of wickedness, receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.
22But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deluding your own selves.
23For if any one is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a mirror: ASV
REMEMBER THESE TRUTHS:
No one in the world can make your life right with God but you. You have been equipped by God with the ability to choose between good and evil, will you choose correctly? The Bible says, Rev 3:20
20Behold, I stand at the door and knock: if any man hear my voice and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me {Rev 3:20}

… IS LOVE ENOUGH? …
1. Love is first of all a quality of God, agapao is that disposition to seek the good of others without being primed to do so -- love Is unsolicited goodness extended toward everyone, all the time.
It was an exercise of the divine will

God does love mankind even when mankind does not serve Him, God will not approve of man's wickedness or of man's willful disobedience. Please reread the article that is contained in this bulletin.
John 3:16 tells us that God loved man so much that He was willing to send His Son into the world to rescue him from sin.
Hebrews 5:8-9 tells us that that salvation procured by Christ for man is predicated on man's willingness to obey his commands.

ACCEPTABLE WORSHIP TODAY
INTRODUCTION
The question of correct worship is a problem today that is seldom addressed by Bible writers and scholars. Perhaps one of the reasons for their reluctance of such a vastly important subject is their desire to pursue the false concept, "unity in diversity, which is not unity at all but is simply union. The truth about worship of the one true God is knowable and available to anyone willing to accept the Holy Scriptures. Although many will not accept the Written Word of God as a Divine Pattern for worship, it really is. God, in His infinite goodness has provided mankind with the pattern of worship in each dispensation[1] of time, a pattern today that can be followed by all.
The study in this issue concerns the worship of God's people. The worship under the "Christian Dispensation" is the only worship system that is approved by God today -- that system is found within the New Testament.
TRUE WORSHIP
True worship is defined in John 4:24, "God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship in spirit and truth." {ASV}. Whenever man seeks to worship God today this verse tells us how that is to be done. There are at least four points found in this instruction about worship, they are:
Ø True worship is paying divine honors to God.
Ø True worship is performing homage to God.
Ø True worship is reverencing God.
Ø True worship shows respect to God.
THREE FORMS OF WORSHIP
1. Vain worship --
Matthew 15:7-9, "Ye hypocrites, well did Isaiah prophesy of you,
saying, > This people honoreth me with their lips; But their heart is far from me. > But in vain do they worship me, Teaching (as their) doctrines the precepts of men" {ASV}.
2. Ignorant worship -- Acts 17:23, "For as I passed along, and observed the objects of your worship, I found also an altar with this inscription, TO AN UNKNOWN GOD. What therefore ye worship in ignorance, this I set forth unto you"
3. True worship -- John 4:24, "God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship in spirit and truth" {ASV}.
Booklets on the acts of true worship have been prepared for the study of each of the five acts of worship. If you would like a copy of a specific act of worship fir personal study, let the editor know. The underlined words in the following material are the titles of the spiral bound booklets available.
True worship on the Lord's Day {i.e., Sundays} consists of the following actions:
- The church membership is instructed to come together according to Hebrews 10:24-25.
- The church is instructed to sing together according to Ephesians 5:19.
- The church is instructed to pray without ceasing according to Luke 18:1
- The church is to edify itself {i.e., preach/teach the message of Christ}, Acts 20:7 gives us an example of the first Christians in this matter.
- The church is to lay by in store or give of their honest earned wages into a common treasure as taught in 1 Corinthians 16:1-2.
- The church is to partake of the Lord's Supper each first day of the week according to Acts 20:7

A Sermon titled: "ANOTHER LESSON ON WORSHIP"
INTRODUCTION:
The Bible discusses several kinds of worship. In this study, we will examine those references in the Bible that discuss worship; we will find that there are two kinds of worship, "false worship" and "true worship."
BODY:
I. FALSE WORSHIP:
1. There is "vain worship": This is empty worship.
Matt 15:8-9,
8 These people draw near to Me with their mouth, and honor Me with their lips, but their heart is far from Me.
9 And in vain they worship Me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.
2. There is "will worship":
This is voluntary worship.
1479 ethelothreskeia (eth-el-oth-race-ki'-ah);
from 2309 and 2356; voluntary (arbitrary and unwarranted) piety, i.e. sanctimony:
KJV-- will worship. (Vine's Expository Dictionary - CD ROM)
Col 2:20-23,
20 Wherefore if ye be dead with Christ from the rudiments of the world, why, as though living in the world, are ye subject to ordinances,
21 (Touch not; taste not; handle not;
22 Which all are to perish with the using;) after the commandments and doctrines of men?
23 Which things have indeed a show of wisdom in will worship, and humility, and
neglecting of the body; not in any honor to the satisfying of the flesh. (KJV)
3. There is "worship in ignorance":
50 agnoeo (ag-no-eh'-o);
from 1 (as a negative particle) and 3539; not to know (through lack of information or
Intelligence); by implication, to ignore (through disinclination):
KJV-- (be) ignorant (-ly), not know, not understand, unknown.
Acts 17:23,
23 For as I passed by, and beheld your devotions, I found an altar with this
inscription, TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Whom therefore ye ignorantly worship, him declare I unto you.
4. Consequently, one must know about true worship - [following discussion].
II. TRUE WORSHIP:
John 4:23-24,
23 "But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him.
24 "God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth." (NKJ)
1. The object of true worship: "GOD"
A. The character of God is set forth for us by Paul,
Acts 17:22-29,
22 Then Paul stood in the midst of the Areopagus and said, "Men of Athens, I perceive that in all things you are very religious;
23 "for as I was passing through and considering the objects of your worship, I even found an altar with this inscription: TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Therefore, the One whom you worship without knowing, Him I proclaim to you:
24 "God, who made the world and everything in it, since He is Lord of heaven and earth, does not dwell in temples made with hands.
25 "Nor is He worshiped with men's hands, as though He needed anything, since He gives to all life, breath, and all things.
26 "And He has made from one blood every nation of men to dwell on all the face of the earth, and has determined their preappointed times and the boundaries of their dwellings,
27 "so that they should seek the Lord, in the hope that they might grope for Him and find Him, though He is not far from each one of us;
28 "for in Him we live and move and have our being, as also some of your own poets have said, 'For we are also His offspring.'
29 "Therefore, since we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the
Divine Nature is like gold or silver or stone, something shaped by art and man's devising. (NKJ)
B. A failure to recognize God in His true character, and to render proper respect and awe toward him, plunged the world into idolatry, moral, and spiritual bankruptcy,
Rom 1:18-25,
18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness,
19 because what may be known of God is manifest in them, for God has shown it to them.
20 For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse,
21 because, although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened.
22 Professing to be wise, they became fools,
23 and changed the glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like corruptible man-- and birds and four-footed animals and creeping things.
24 Therefore God also gave them up to uncleanness, in the lusts of their hearts, to dishonor their bodies among themselves,
25 who exchanged the truth of God for the lie, and worshiped and served the
creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen. (NKJ)
2. Character of true worship, "IN SPIRIT"
3. Standard of true worship, "AND TRUTH"
(All worship is to be offered according to Divine instruction"
See transparency, "THE FIVE ACTS OF WORSHIP"
III. THE PLACE WHERE MEN OUGHT TO WORSHIP:
John 4:20-21,
20 Our fathers worshipped in this mountain; and ye say, that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship.
21 Jesus saith unto her, Woman, believe me, the hour cometh, when ye shall neither in this
mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father. (KJV)
IV. THE DISPOSITION OF THE WORSHIPPER WHENEVER HE COMES TO WORSHIP:
1. He must have been cleansed by the blood of Christ that he may offer a clean and acceptable worship unto God, he must be faithful.
2. The worshipper ought to come before Him with reverence and awe.
Heb 12:28-29,
28 Wherefore we receiving a kingdom which cannot be moved, let us have grace, whereby we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear:
29 For our God is a consuming fire. (KJV)
3. The worshipper ought to come before God with thanksgiving, with rejoicing, and with gladness in his heart.
Heb 13:15-17,
15 By him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to his name.
16 But to do good and to communicate forget not: for with such sacrifices God is well pleased.
17 Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves: for they watch for
your souls, as they that must give account, that they may do it with joy, and not with grief: for that is unprofitable for you. (KJV)
CONCLUSION:
When man knows the difference between false worship and true worship he is capable of choosing to worship God correctly when he worships. The person that worships God ought to worship him correctly always.
EDITOR'S CONCLUDING REMARKS:
The subject, "worship" is indeed a subject that needs to be understood by every child of God. The many concepts about worship that are current in religious institutions are often conflicting one with the other. We know that God will not accept conflicting types or forms of worship because He has so stated in His instructions to mankind over and over again -- Exodus 20:3-5, "3Thou shalt have no other gods before me. > 4Thou shalt not make unto thee a graven image, nor any likeness (of any thing) that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. > 5Thou shalt not bow down thyself unto them, nor serve them, for I Jehovah thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, upon the third and upon the fourth generation of them that hate me," ASV
Leviticus 19:4, "Turn ye not unto idols, nor make to yourselves molten gods: I am Jehovah your God."
Deuteronomy 5:7, "Thou shalt have no other gods before me." ASV
Psalms 96:5-9, > "5For all the gods of the peoples are idols; but Jehovah made the heavens. > 6Honor and majesty are before him: strength and beauty are in his sanctuary. > 7Ascribe unto Jehovah, ye kindreds of the peoples, ascribe unto Jehovah glory and strength. > 8Ascribe unto Jehovah the glory due unto his name: bring an offering, and come into his courts. > 9Oh worship Jehovah in holy array: tremble before him, all the earth." ASV
Acts 19:26, "And ye see and hear, that not alone at Ephesus, but almost throughout all Asia, this Paul hath persuaded and turned away much people, saying that they are no gods, that are made with hands:"

QUESTIONS THAT DESERVE AN ANSWER
Contained in this issue I want to address several questions that have arisen over the past few years among brethren in various places. Some of the matters are trivial, others are more serious but each deserves to be answered. I have often wondered myself how some people exist in this world and do not consider their relationship with God or question the purpose of their existence here, in this issue of the "HILLIARD BULLETIN" we will try to understand some of the seemingly unanswerable questions that plague us.
1. WHY ARE THERE SO MANY RELIGIONS?
ANSWER -- Perhaps the reasons for the existence of so many religions is more complex than my answer but I am convinced that the greatest cause for differing religions existence today is due to:
- Man's pride:[2]
- Misunderstanding:[3]
- Unreasonable expectations, expectations that relate to liberty and license to do that which the Bible will not authorize.[4]
- Failure to accept the authority of the Scriptures.[5]
- ARE ALL RELIGIONS BELIEFS ACCEPTABLE TO GOD?
ANSWER -- As the population of the earth increases and man's desires and expectations increase, there contained in man's desire to be independent in all aspects of life. As society becomes increasingly mixed through integration of many cultures and philosophies, it is inevitable that he will desire a religion that is not too restrictive of social lifestyle and human interaction. Such will eventually lead to a plurality of religious beliefs and claims of religious encounters independent of the God of the Bible and the teachings contained therein. This situation has existed with humankind since the earliest times:
- Adam and Eve, Genesis 3
- Cain and Abel, Genesis 4:1-8
- The population of the earth previous to the great flood, Romans 1:18-2:3
- Israelites: Ø The golden calf, Exodus 32:1-10
Ø Manna, Num 11:1-7
Ø Doves, Exodus 16:13: Numbers 11:31-32
Ø The 12 spies, Numbers 13
Ø Rejection of Aaron as High Priest, Numbers 16
CONSIDER THIS:
One can see that the choices of man have always been in conflict with God's
instructions, the same is true today. Perhaps this is why there are so many conflicting religious beliefs today. Even though we do see conflict in doctrine and practice from one denomination to another that does not mean that God approves of this condition, God desires obedience to His instruction today just like He has in past ages:
1 Peter 4:17,
17 For the time (is come) for judgment to begin at the house of God: and if (it begin) first at us, what (shall be) the end of them that obey not the gospel of God? ASV
Hebrews 5:8-9, > "though he was a Son, yet learned obedience by the things which he suffered; > and having been made perfect, he became unto all them that obey him the author of eternal",
John 14:15, "If ye love me, ye will keep my commandments". ASV
NOTE:
From the above Bible references, it may be deducted that God desires obedience to His
commands. It is unacceptable to God to add or take away from anything that He has revealed, He has revealed the Bible to guide man and if that is rejected man has no Divine guide --
Revelation 22:18-19, > "I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, if any man shall add unto them, God shall add unto him the plagues which are written in this book: > and if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part from the tree of life, and out of the holy city, which are written in this book." ASV
3. GOD IS NEVER PLEASED WITH DIVISION:
There are many religious people that proceed with their religious lives based upon the concept of union and call it "Unity." There is a distinct difference between union and unity, please note the following dictionary definitions:
A. UNION -- "Union" is the simple agreement of individuals or parties to
Unite while maintaining their uniqueness. The
concept of "union" is understood better when we look at the concept of ecumentialism in religion, the concept stipulates that union exist among differing religions based upon such stipulation as the acceptance of one supreme being. This concept ignores the differences in doctrine and theology relating to interpreting the Bible or accepting it alone as a Book of Divine authority. "Union" is not unity in any sense of the word.
B. UNITY -- {Biblical unity} -- is something entirely different from the concept of ecumentialism {"UNION"} that exists worldwide today. The World Council of Churches is such an organization, they say they are unified yet retain their peculiar doctrines, dogmas, and peculiar religious rituals, they are not unified at all they are in a voluntary "UNION."
CONSIDER THIS
Jesus prayed for unity of all believers based upon HIS WORD.[6] From the context of the passage in John 17:18-23 it ought to be apparent even to the casual reader of the Written Word of God, that Jesus Christ is praying that His apostles would abide in His Word (i.e., His teachings). It is also apparent that Jesus Christ is praying that His apostles will teach others (i.e., all future generations) the same truths that they are united under (i.e., the Word of God). That is the teachings of Christ then, that included future revelation to be received by the apostles from the activity of the Holy Spirit upon them, who would guide them into all truth.[7] NO! the "Unity" that Jesus prayed for is based upon keeping {i.e., obeying} all of the instructions of Christ. The unions that exist in the religious world are distasteful to Jesus Christ. This fact is pointed out by Him to one of the seven churches of Asia according to Revelation -- cf., Revelation 3:15. There is never a time whenever mankind has the right to assume that God is pleased with less that complete obedience. Indeed, man may try to appease God by doing some of the things that He commands and ignore other commands that are just as important. Such an attitude is not new, the religious leaders of the first century did the same and were rejected, just as surely as people today will eventually be rejected by Him for the same disobedient actions -- cf., Romans 2:1-3, > "Wherefore thou art without excuse, O man, whosoever thou art that judgest: for wherein thou judges another, thou condemnest thyself; for thou that judgest dost practice the same things. > And we know that the judgment of God is according to truth against them that practice such things. > And reckonest thou this, O man, who judges them that practice such things, and doest the same, that thou shalt escape the judgment of God?
Biblical unity is that unity that is based on the Written Word of God. There can be no real unity unless everyone subscribes to the same source of Divine authority, that is the Written Word of God today.
4. IS UNITY ATTAINABLE?
To attain real unity in religion, the first fact that must be recognized is, the Bible is the only source of Divine authority. Unless there is a standard of authority that everyone can agree on, any hope for unity is impossible. It is unreasonable to suggest that unity is possible when one group of religious people accept the Koran as their source of authority, another group accept Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures as their source of authority, another group accepts the Book of Mormon as their source of authority, another accepts the Old Testament, and yet another the Bible {i.e., Old and New Testaments}, and etc. As one can see, to hope for unity with such a group of often times opposing positions that are taught within their particular source book of authority is unreasonable.
Religious unity cannot exist based upon a variety of authorative sources teaching contradictory philosophies. Yet, unity is possible if all will set aside every source of authority and fasten their hopes and aspirations on the Written Word of God {i.e., the 66 books of the Old and New Testaments}. This is where mankind may find unity, upon God's Word.
Please be advised, I do not suggest that religious unity is impossible, I suggest that it is impossible unless good men of honor appeal to the Word of God and it alone for that unity so sought after. While there are people unwilling to accept the Bible as the source of Spiritual authority unity will not have a chance. As the Source of Authority itself states:
Psalms 133:1, "Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!" ASV
Ephesians 4:3, "giving diligence to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace." ASV
Ephesians 4:13, "till we all attain unto the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a full-grown man, unto the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ:" ASV
EDITOR'S SUGGESTIONS:
Included in this issue are some important answers to questions about Religious unity, about division, and some of the causes for disunity as well as some suggestions for true Biblical unity. Please read each article and examine the truths contained within them.
1. Accept the fact that there is religious division in our world today
2. Accept the fact that there are many different sources of authority for all these religions that exist today in our world.
3. Accept the fact that two people cannot hope to come to a unified conclusion on a proposition whenever they are looking at two conflicting answers to the question in two different books of religious authority.
4. Accept the fact that the only real source of Biblical authority adaptable to the whole of humankind is the Bible {i.e., the 66 books of the Old and New Testaments.
5. Accept the fact that Jesus Christ taught in the Bible that He desires that all religious people be one, cf. John 17:18-23.
6. Accept the fact that most people are not listening to Jesus prayer for unity, a fact that is evident when we look at all the conflicting religions scattered around us today.
7. Determine to do your part in seeking unity by listening to God's teachings via the Written Word of God

YOU ARE ALWAYS WELCOME HERE:
You are invited to attend with us each time that we come together to worship the one true God. We do not follow man's philosophy; we follow the teaching of the Written Word of God:
John 8:32, "and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." ASV
John 17:17, "Sanctify them in the truth: thy word is truth." ASV
John 12:48, "He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my sayings, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I spake, the same shall judge him in the last day." ASV
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
JESUS SAYS TO US:
Matthew 11:28-30,
”28Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
29Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.
30For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.“ ASV
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
[1] Dispensation: has reference to worship patterns that God has provided for mankind throughout his history -- from the creation to the present.
Example 1 -- Under the first dispensation the head of each family was the religious leader and God revealed the form of worship through him to his people. The first dispensation may correctly be referred to as the "Patriarchal Dispensation".
Example 2 -- The second great dispensation was the "Mosiacal Dispensation", in this period God set up a place, priesthood, and a form of worship and revealed it to his people through Moses, the foundation of this dispensation was the Ten Commandments.
Example 3 -- The final and last dispensation through which God has revealed his will about worship is that of the New Covenant or the "Christian Dispensation". Under this new dispensation, God has revealed a system of worship, a system of acquiring salvation from sin, a method of organization, and has promised rewards to those that faithfully live according to His instruction and condemnation to those that do not live according to His instruction.
[2] Proverbs 16:18,
Pride goes before destruction,
And a haughty spirit before a fall. NKJV
Proverbs 13:10,
By pride comes nothing but strife, NKJV
These two passages show that pride is involved in division and strife, surely division and strife is part of the reason for the great number of religious institutions today.
[3] Misunderstanding in simple language is ignorance of the truth, either through unwillingness to accept the Bible as absolute truth or self-delusion {i.e., becoming a defender of untruth through personal preference rather than submission and conformity to Divine truth}.
[4] Many people come to Christ with expectations that are not promised by God in this life, some people expect that by becoming part of a church their problems will all be over -- no more bills, no more trouble in the family, a cure for spoiled children, a new job that will provide more for the material things of life, etc. The Lord promises to those faithful until death, eternal life but in this life Christians will experience trials and tribulations. We will be better equipped to deal with the problems of living here but becoming a Christian is not a guarantee that all our problems and troubles will be over.
[5] Many people, rather that accepting the Scriptures as God intended, insert their own religious philosophy. Whenever a person substitutes their ideas for whatever God has instructed division follows. When there is division a new church comes into existence with its own peculiar doctrine.
[6] John 17:18-23,
18As thou didst send me into the world, even so sent I them into the world.
19And for their sakes I sanctify myself, that they themselves also may be sanctified in truth.
20Neither for these only do I pray, but for them also that believe on me through their word;
21that they may all be one; even as thou, Father, (art) in me, and I in thee, that they also may be in us: that the world may believe that thou didst send me.
22And the glory which thou hast given me I have given unto them; that they may be one, even as we (are) one;
23I in them, and thou in me, that they may be perfected into one; that the world may know that thou didst send me, and lovedst them, even as thou lovedst me. ASV
[7] John 14:25-26,
25These things have I spoken unto you, while (yet) abiding with you.
26But the Comforter, (even) the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said unto you.
John 15:26-27,
26But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, (even) the Spirit of truth, which proceeded from the Father, he shall bear witness of me:
27and ye also bear witness, because ye have been with me from the beginning. ASV
John 16:7,
7Nevertheless I tell you the truth: It is expedient for you that I go away; for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I go, I will send him unto you. ASV
