THE NEW TESTAMENT CHURCH

Editorial by Garreth L. Clair

TEXT:

Matthew 16:13-20 (Reference also in Mark 8:27-30; Luke 9:18-20)

13 When Jesus came into the region of Caesarea Philippi, He asked His disciples, saying, "Who do men say that I, the Son of Man, am?"

14 So they said,“ Some say John the Baptist, some Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets."

15 He said to them, "But who do you say that I am?"

16 Simon Peter answered and said,“ You are the Christ, the Son of the living God."

17 Jesus answered and said to him, "Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but My Father who is in heaven.  18 And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.  19 And I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven."

20 Then He commanded His disciples that they should tell no one that He was Jesus the Christ“ (NKJV).

INTRODUCTION:

Understanding of the church Jesus built begins with an understanding of the phrase ”church“. Those of us having more than a passing interest in the church Jesus built are interested in teaching others about it. Consequently, we are, or must understand what it is in order to explain it to others. The very nature of the Christian’s commitment to Christ requires of him/her that they teach others about Christ and His Church, {cf. Matthew 28:18-20, 18 ”And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, "All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19  Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20  teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age." Amen.

2 Timothy 2:2, 2 And the things that you have heard from me among many witnesses, commit these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also“ {NKJV}.

DEFINING THE WORD CHURCH IN HISTORICAL PRESPECTIVE

‘The Greek word ekklesia, which came to mean church, was originally applied in the Classical period to an official assembly of citizens. In the Septuagint (Greek) translation of the Old Testament (3rd–2nd century BC), the term ekklesia is used for the general assembly of the Jewish people, especially when gathered for a religious purpose such as hearing the Law (e.g., Deuteronomy 9:10, 18:16). In the New Testament it is used of the entire body of believing Christians throughout the world (e.g., Matthew 16:18), of the believers in a particular area (e.g., Acts 5:11), and also of the congregation meeting in a particular house—the ”house-church“ (e.g., Romans 16:5)“.      (Excerpted from Encyclopedia Britannica Online}

CHRIST USED A WORD IN COMMON USE AT THE TIME HE PREDICTED HE WOULD BUILD HIS CHURCH, Matthew 16:18.

The selection of the word church to designate the church Jesus Built indicates that it was to be an assembly of people who had all followed His prescription to enter it as those that entered it (i.e., the first congregation), on the day of Pentecost, cf. Acts 2:37-47, ”37 Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, "Men and brethren, what shall we do?" 38 Then Peter said to them,“ Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call." 40 And with many other words he testified and exhorted them, saying, "Be saved from this perverse generation." 41 Then those who gladly received his word were baptized; and that day about three thousand souls were added to them. 42  And they continued steadfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers. 43 Then fear came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were done through the apostles. 44 Now all who believed were together, and had all things in common, 45 and sold their possessions and goods, and divided them among all, as anyone had need. 46 So continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they ate their food with gladness and simplicity of heart, 47 praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved“ (NKJV).

SOME FACTS ABOUT THE CHURCH JESUS BUILT

1.         The church Jesus promised to build is described as a new relationship for Jews and Gentiles where they were to be united in one body --- Ephesians 2:11-22, ”11 Therefore remember that you, once Gentiles in the flesh — who are called Uncircumcision by what is called the Circumcision made in the flesh by hands —  12 that at that time you were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world. 13 But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. 14 For He Himself is our peace, who has made both one, and has broken down the middle wall of separation, 15 having abolished in His flesh the enmity, that is, the law of commandments contained in ordinances, so as to create in Himself one new man from the two, thus making peace, 16 and that He might reconcile them both to God in one body through the cross, thereby putting to death the enmity. 17 And He came and preached peace to you who were afar off and to those who were near. 18 For through Him we both have access by one Spirit to the Father. 19 Now, therefore, you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, 20 having been built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ Himself being the chief cornerstone,  21 in whom the whole building, being fitted together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord, 22 in whom you also are being built together for a dwelling place of God in the Spirit“ (NKJV).

2.         The church Jesus promised to build is described by as a place where the citizens of it are peaceful and docile, and harmless as doves --- Isaiah 2:4, ”4 He shall judge between the nations, And rebuke many people; They shall beat their swords into plowshares, And their spears into pruning hooks; Nation shall not lift up sword against nation, Neither shall they learn war anymore“ (NKJV).

John 14:25-27, ”25 These things I have spoken to you while being present with you.  26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.  27 Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.“

Matthew 11:28-30, ”28 Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.  29 Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.  30 For My yoke is easy and My burden is light“ (NKJV).

CONSIDER THIS:

During Jesus ministry he taught the crowds that followed him about the qualities of and the nature of the people that were to make up the church (i.e., Kingdom of God) he promised to build especially is this prominent in his teaching of ”The Sermon on the Mountain“ cf. Matthew 5-7.

3.         Jesus taught the people of his day that there would be salvation from sin for both Jews and Greeks, both slaves and freemen, and both male and female in the church he established --- 1 Corinthians 12:12-14, ”12 For as the body is one and has many members, but all the members of that one body, being many, are one body, so also is Christ. 13 For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body — whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free — and have all been made to drink into one Spirit. 14 For in fact the body is not one member but many.

Galatians, 3:26-29, ”26 For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. 27 For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. 28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. 29 And if you are Christ's, then you are Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise“ (NKJV)

4.         Jesus set the organizational structure of the church, both in its universal sense and in its local congregational sense:

* In the universal sense the church is the Body of Christ, He is the head of it --- Ephesians 1:19-23, ”19 and what is the exceeding greatness of His power toward us who believe, according to the working of His mighty power 20 which He worked in Christ when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places,  21 far above all principality and power and might and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in that which is to come. 22 And He put all things under His feet, and gave Him to be head over all things to the church, 23 which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all“ (NKJV).

** In the local, congregational sense each congregation is autonomous, self governing, having their own plurality of elders, deacons, and members --- Ephesians 4:11-16, ”11 And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors (i.e., elders – added by Glc) and teachers, 12 for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ, 13 till we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ; 14 that we should no longer be children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in the cunning craftiness of deceitful plotting, 15 but, speaking the truth in love, may grow up in all things into Him who is the head — Christ —  16 from whom the whole body, joined and knit together by what every joint supplies, according to the effective working by which every part does its share, causes growth of the body for the edifying of itself in love“

Philippians 1:1, ”1 Paul and Timothy, bondservants of Jesus Christ, To all the saints in Christ Jesus who are in Philippi, with the bishops {i.e., ”elders – Added by Glc} and deacons (NKJV).

CONSIDER THIS:

The Biblical organization of the church of Christ is a plurality of elders (i.e., bishops, presbyters, pastors,) in every church, with deacons serving under the oversight of the qualified elders. The qualifications of elders and deacons is found in Titus 1:5-9, ”5 For this reason I left you in Crete, that you should set in order the things that are lacking, and appoint elders in every city as I commanded you —  6 if a man is blameless, the husband of one wife, having faithful children not accused of dissipation or insubordination. 7 For a bishop must be blameless, as a steward of God, not self-willed, not quick-tempered, not given to wine, not violent, not greedy for money, 8 but hospitable, a lover of what is good, sober-minded, just, holy, self-controlled, 9 holding fast the faithful word as he has been taught, that he may be able, by sound doctrine, both to exhort and convict those who contradict“ (NKJV).

1 Timothy 3:8-13, ”8 Likewise deacons must be reverent, not double-tongued, not given to much wine, not greedy for money, 9 holding the mystery of the faith with a pure conscience. 10 But let these also first be tested; then let them serve as deacons, being found blameless. 11 Likewise, their wives must be reverent, not slanderers, temperate, faithful in all things. 12 Let deacons be the husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well. 13 For those who have served well as deacons obtain for themselves a good standing and great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus“ (NKJV).

5.         The church Jesus built has a divinely given pattern for its worship --- John 4:24, ”God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth“ (NKJV).

There are five actions included in acceptable worship:

Lord’s Supper -- Acts 20:7, ”Now on the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul, ready to depart the next day, spoke to them and continued his message until midnight“ ( NKJV).

Giving into a common treasury (i.e. the congregation’s treasury) --                  1 Corinthians 16:1-2, ” Now concerning the collection for the saints, as I have given orders to the churches of Galatia, so you must do also: 2 On the first day of the week let each one of you lay something aside, storing up as he may prosper, that there be no collections when I come“ (NKJV).

Singing -- Ephesians 5:19-21, ”19 speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord, 20 giving thanks always for all things to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, 21 submitting to one another in the fear of God.“

Colossians  3:16, ”Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord“

Praying – Colossians 4:2-4,Continue earnestly in prayer , being vigilant in it with thanksgiving; 3 meanwhile praying also for us, that God would open to us a door for the word, to speak the mystery of Christ, for which I am also in chains, 4 that I may make it manifest, as I ought to speak.“

Philippians 4:6, ”Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God“ (NKJV).

Ephesians 5:2, giving thanks always for all things to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, 21 submitting to one another in the fear of God“ (NKJV).

Teaching (i. e. preaching) -- Acts 20:7, ”Now on the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul, ready to depart the next day, spoke to them and continued his message until midnight“

6.         The work that the congregation is to do is also revealed by God, each congregation is to perform activities that God has authorized the congregation to do. Those authorized activities are:

Edify the congregation – Romans  14:19, ”Therefore let us pursue the things which make for peace and the things by which one may edify another.“

1 Corinthians 10:23-24, ”23 All things are lawful for me, but not all things are helpful; all things are lawful for me, but not all things edify. 24 Let no one seek his own, but each one the other's well-being.

1 Thessalonians 5:11,Therefore comfort each other and edify one another, just as you also are doing.“

Ephesians 4:12, ” For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:“

Evangelize the world to the extent of the congregation’s resources – Matthew 28:18-20, ”18 And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, "All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19  Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20  teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age." Amen.

Acts 8:4-8, ”4 Therefore those who were scattered went everywhere preaching the word. 5 Then Philip went down to the city of Samaria and preached Christ to them. 6 And the multitudes with one accord heeded the things spoken by Philip, hearing and seeing the miracles which he did. 7 For unclean spirits, crying with a loud voice, came out of many who were possessed; and many who were paralyzed and lame were healed. 8 And there was great joy in that city.

Acts 11:19-26, ”19 Now those who were scattered after the persecution that arose over Stephen traveled as far as Phoenicia, Cyprus, and Antioch, preaching the word to no one but the Jews only. 20 But some of them were men from Cyprus and Cyrene, who, when they had come to Antioch, spoke to the Hellenists, preaching the Lord Jesus. 21 And the hand of the Lord was with them, and a great number believed and turned to the Lord.“22 Then news of these things came to the ears of the church in Jerusalem, and they sent out Barnabas to go as far as Antioch. 23 When he came and had seen the grace of God, he was glad, and encouraged them all that with purpose of heart they should continue with the Lord. 24 For he was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and of faith. And a great many people were added to the Lord. 25 Then Barnabas departed for Tarsus to seek Saul. 26 And when he had found him, he brought him to Antioch. So it was that for a whole year they assembled with the church and taught a great many people. And the disciples were first called Christians in Antioch.

Acts 20:7, ”Now on the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul, ready to depart the next day, spoke to them and continued his message until midnight. NKJV

CONSIDER THIS:

It is often suggested that if each congregation is limited to the extent of its ability how may the church aid in evangelizing the far off countries and their many and varied peoples? The Lord did not leave this matter to the judgment of individual Christians or to the judgment of the elders of autonomous churches; He did revealed the method for doing this type of world outreach to the Lost. Please note the following Biblical references that show how this work was done in early New Testament times:

FIRST – Notice in these passages that the preacher (i.e., Paul and his fellow preachers) in the mission field (i.e. Corinth) were supported directly by many churches:

SECOND– Notice that the large congregation in Jerusalem, after hearing of the conversion of the Gentiles in Antioch of Syria, sent Barnabus (i.e., supported him) to go and strengthen and encourage them – (see above Acts 11:22-25, underlined)

2 Corinthians 11:5-10, ”5 For I consider that I am not at all inferior to the most eminent apostles. 6 Even though I am untrained in speech, yet I am not in knowledge. But we have been thoroughly manifested among you in all things. 7 Did I commit sin in humbling myself that you might be exalted, because I preached the gospel of God to you free of charge? 8 I robbed other churches, taking wages from them to minister to you. 9 And when I was present with you, and in need, I was a burden to no one, for what I lacked the brethren who came from Macedonia supplied. And in everything I kept myself from being burdensome to you, and so I will keep myself.“

2 Corinthians 12:12-13, ”12 Truly the signs of an apostle were accomplished among you with all perseverance, in signs and wonders and mighty deeds. 13 For what is it in which you were inferior to other churches, except that I myself was not burdensome to you? Forgive me this wrong“ (NKJV)!

THIRDLY – Whenever a large, affluent congregation sees the need to assist a church either in America or a foreign country and are financially able to do so they ought to do it.

FORTHLY – Whenever a need is brought to the attention of faithful churches and evangelists in a destitute place, a church ought to send a sound man to assist the needy church. If the congregation cannot support the man alone they ought to aid him in raising whatever support that he needs from other churches and individuals and Have the support sent directly to the preacher in the field of labor. The New Testament does not give authority to do this work of evangelizing any other way.

Care for needy (i.e., destitute) Christians -- Acts 11:27-30, ”27 And in these days prophets came from Jerusalem to Antioch. 28 Then one of them, named Agabus, stood up and showed by the Spirit that there was going to be a great famine throughout all the world, which also happened in the days of Claudius Caesar. 29 Then the disciples, each according to his ability, determined to send relief to the brethren dwelling in Judea. 30 This they also did, and sent it to the elders by the hands of Barnabas and Saul.“

James 2:15-16, ”15 If a brother or sister is naked and destitute of daily food, 16 and one of you says to them, "Depart in peace, be warmed and filled," but you do not give them the things which are needed for the body, what does it profit“ (NKJV).

1 Corinthians 16:1-2, ”1 Now concerning the collection for the saints, as I have given orders to the churches of Galatia, so you must do also: 2 On the first day of the week let each one of you lay something

aside, storing up as he may prosper, that there be no collections when I come. NKJV

Care for widows indeed from the congregation’s treasury - 1 Timothy 5:3-16,  ”3 Honor widows who are really widows. 4 But if any widow has children or grandchildren, let them first learn to show piety at home and to repay their parents; for this is good and acceptable before God. 5 Now she who is really a widow, and left alone, trusts in God and continues in supplications and prayers night and day. 6 But she who lives in pleasure is dead while she lives. 7 And these things command, that they may be blameless. 8 But if anyone does not provide for his own, and especially for those of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever. 9 Do not let a widow under sixty years old be taken into the number, and not unless she has been the wife of one man, 10 well reported for good works: if she has brought up children, if she has lodged strangers, if she has washed the saints' feet, if she has relieved the afflicted, if she has diligently followed every good work. 11 But refuse the younger widows; for when they have begun to grow wanton against Christ, they desire to marry, 12 having condemnation because they have cast off their first faith. 13 And besides they learn to be idle, wandering about from house to house, and not only idle but also gossips and busybodies, saying things which they ought to the adversary to speak reproachfully. 15 For some have already turned aside after not. 14 Therefore I desire that the younger widows  marry, bear children, manage the house, give no opportunity Satan. 16 If any believing man or woman has widows, let them relieve them, and do not let the church be burdened, that it may relieve those who are really widows“

CONSIDER THIS:

Responsibilities of Christians on an individual basis examined toward the poor, destitute, orphans, and widows or widowers. Consider these following Biblical references in context:

With regard to younger widows or those widows with family -- 1 Timothy 5:14-16, ”14 Therefore I desire that the younger widows  marry, bear children, manage the house, give no opportunity to the adversary to speak reproachfully. 15 For some have already turned aside after Satan. 16 If any believing man or woman has widows, let them relieve them, and do not let the church be burdened, that it may relieve those who are really widows“ (NKJV).

With regard to the poor -- John 12:8, ”For the poor you have with you always, but Me you do not have always.“

Galatians 2:10, ”They desired only that we should remember the poor, the very thing which I also was eager to do.“

James 2:1-6, ”My brethren, do not hold the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory, with partiality. 2 For if there should come into your assembly a man with gold rings, in fine apparel, and there should also come in a poor man in filthy clothes, 3 and you pay attention to the one wearing the fine clothes and say to him, "You sit here in a good place," and say to the poor man, "You stand there," or, "Sit here at my footstool," 4 have you not shown partiality among yourselves, and become judges with evil thoughts? 5 Listen, my beloved brethren: Has God not chosen the poor of this world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom which He promised to those who love Him“ (NKJV).

Galatians 6:10, ”10 Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all, especially to those who are of the household of faith“ (NKJV).

With regard to orphans and widows -- James 1:27, ”Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their trouble, and to keep oneself unspotted from the world“.

With regard to enemies -- Matthew 5:48, ”"You have heard that it was said, 'You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.'  44 But I say to you, love your enemies , bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you,  45 that you may be sons of your Father in heaven; for He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.  46 For if you love those who love you, what reward have you? Do not even the tax collectors do the same?  47 And if you greet your brethren only, what do you do more than others? Do not even the tax collectors do so?  48 Therefore you shall be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect“ (NKJV).

With regard to brethren:

Erring brethren -- James 5:19-20,19 Brethren , if anyone among you wanders from the truth, and someone turns him back, 20 let him know that he who turns a sinner from the error of his way will save a soul from death and cover a multitude of sins“ (NKJV).

Faithful brethren -- 1 Peter 1:22-23,  ”22 Since you have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit in sincere love of the brethren , love one another fervently with a pure heart, 23 having been born again, not of corruptible seed but incorruptible, through the word of God which lives and abides forever,“

1 John 3:13-18, ”13 Do not marvel, my brethren , if the world hates you. 14 We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love the brethren. He who does not love his brother abides in death. 15 Whoever hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him. 16 By this we know love, because He laid down His life for us. And we also ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. 17 But whoever has this world's goods, and sees his brother in need, and shuts up his heart from him, how does the love of God abide in him? 18 My little children, let us not love in word or in tongue, but in deed and in truth“ (NKJV).

How to behave as Christians interact together in Christ (i.e., in the church) – 1 Timothy 3:14-16, ”These things I write to you, though I hope to come to you shortly; 15 but if I am delayed, I write so that you may know how you ought to behave yourself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth. 16 And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness“

1 Corinthians 13:1-13, ”1Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I have become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal. 2 And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. 3 And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, but have not love, it profits me nothing. 4 Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up; 5 does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil; 6 does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth; 7 bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. 8 Love never fails. But whether there are prophecies, they will fail; whether there are tongues, they will cease; whether there is knowledge, it will vanish away. 9 For we know in part and we prophesy in part. 10 But when that which is perfect has come, then that which is in part will be done away. 11 When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child; but when I became a man, I put away childish things. 12 For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part, but then I shall know just as I also am known. 13 And now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love“ (NKJV)

CONCLUSION:

The material that we have presented here is a very small portion of those things that the New Testament teaches about church membership, and the Christian’s personal responsibility. From time to time we will discuss more of the duties, privileges, and desires that the Christian ought to possess. There are many fundamental matters that are often overlooked or neglected in the life of many Christians; perhaps we can study these matters in the future in more detail. Biblical study is the most productive of all reading and personal study, there is not another source of information on earth that will effect your life more that the information that God has revealed to us via the Written Word. Study the Bible daily…

SOME PEOPLE CANNOT BE SAVED FROM SIN

TEXT - Romans 1:16-24

INTRODUCTION:

1.         There is a heaven and there is a place of eternal punishment.

2.         All will eventually die and will go to either heaven or eternal punishment.

3.         Everyone is either saved or unsaved.

4.         The Bible states these facts very clearly.

A HEAVENLY PLACE FOR THE RIGHTEOUS:

John 14:2-6,

2          In my Father's house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you; for I go to prepare a place for you.

3          And if I go and prepare a place for you, I come again, and will receive you unto myself; that where I am, (there) ye may be also.

4          And whither I go, ye know the way.

5          Thomas saith unto him, Lord, we know not whither thou goest; how know we the way?

6          Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, and the truth, and the life: no one cometh unto the Father, but by me. ASV

A PLACE OF ETERNAL TORMENT FOR THE UNRIGHTEOUS:

Revelation 20:10,

10        And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where are also the beast and the false prophet; and they shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever. ASV

Revelation 20:14,

14                And death and Hades were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death,

(even) the lake of fire. ASV

Knowledge of the realities of life, death, and what is after death is important to every person. The wise understand that now is the time to prepare the soul for eternity. The apostle Peter stated clearly in 1 Peter 1:24 the importance of understanding that life is fleeting, please note Peter's statement: "For, All flesh is as grass, And all the glory thereof as the flower of grass. The grass withereth, and the flower falleth:" ASV

1.                  Man and his glory (i.e., his life) are fading away.

2.                  Everyone will eventually return to the dust (i.e., will die) from which they came -- cf. Ecclesiastes 12:7, ”Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it." KJV

BODY:

{Even though many realize that life is short and they are unsaved, many will not (i.e., CANNOT) be saved -- those that will not be saved are}

THOSE WHO DO NOT DESIRE SALVATION:

A.        One must want to be saved, Acts 2:37, "Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles,  " Men and brethren, what shall we do?

B.                 Each person is personally involved in their conversion, becoming a Christian is not a passive affair!

(1)               Each person volunteers to serve God.

(2)               No one can be saved for another person.

THOSE THAT REFUSE GOD'S WILL:

2 Thess 1:8-9,

8          rendering vengeance to them that know not God, and to them that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus:

9                    who shall suffer punishment, (even) eternal destruction from the face of

the Lord and from the glory of his might, ASV

THOSE THAT WILL NOT ABANDON SIN:

Luke 13:1-5,

1          Now there were some present at that very season who told him of the Galilaeans, whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices.

2          And he answered and said unto them, Think ye that these Galilaeans were sinners above all the Galilaeans, because they have suffered these things?

3          I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all in like manner perish.

4          Or those eighteen, upon whom the tower in Siloam fell, and killed them, think ye that they were offenders above all the men that dwell in Jerusalem?

5                    I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish. ASV

THOSE THAT TRUST IN THEMSELVES FOR SALVATION:

Matt 7:21,

21                Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom

of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father who is in heaven. ASV

THE CARELESS, THOSE THAT WILL NOT TAKE THE TIME TO KNOW THEIR RESPONSIBILITY TO GOD:

Matt 15:14,

14                Let them alone: they are blind guides. And if the blind guide the blind, both

shall fall into a pit.  ASV

THOSE THAT HATE THEIR BROTHER:

1 John 4:20-21,

20        If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, cannot love God whom he hath not seen.

21                And this commandment have we from him, that he who loveth God love

his brother also. ASV

AN INFANT CHILD:

{They have no sin - They cannot be saved from something that they do not have}

Matt 18:1-3,

1          In that hour came the disciples unto Jesus, saying, Who then is greatest in the kingdom of heaven?

2          And he called to him a little child, and set him in the midst of them,

3          and said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye turn, and become as little children, ye shall in no wise enter into the kingdom of heaven. ASV

CONCLUSION:

1.                  Indeed, there are many people that cannot be saved from the eternal torment that is coming to the wicked.

2.                  Those that cannot be saved are those that will not allow God to save them for whatever reason.

3.                  God is willing and able to save everyone but everyone will not be saved from sin and go

to heaven, This is a great tragedy of every generation.

4.                  It is a fact, the infant child cannot be saved from sin -- an infant child has no sin

THE DAYS OF OUR LIVES

Garreth L. Clair

The days of a person’s life pass with great rapidity, to think that we have unlimited time here on the earth is a serious mistake. Many people live as though they have forever to get the most mundane things done, when the things could be done very quickly if the person put the task first in their priorities and began to do it. The great problem that hinders too many people is the willingness to put off (i.e. procrastinate), rather than take a task, beginning it, and following through to its conclusion. Indeed, some things require planning and thoughtful consideration before they are undertaken but the putting off indefinitely the commencement of a useful project is a contributing factor to an unproductive life and an old age full of regret. Because people have different levels of ability each person must decide for themselves if their approach to living life is productive or unproductive to good, only then can one begin to tackle projects within the range of their ability and proceed to finish them one by one. This concept is also effective at building a Christian life (i.e. a life for God) and a satisfied and fulfilling existence while one lives out the years of their life here on earth.

CONSIDER THIS:

The Bible has several very pointed statements about our pursuits here on the earth and what our priorities in life ought to be in order to live a successful life (i.e. successful by God’s standard). Please read the following truths, found in God’s Book, think on each reading and consider the ideal of ”considering, seeking, and following through to completion.“

Matt 6:31-34, ”31 "Therefore do not worry, saying, 'What shall we eat?' or 'What shall we drink?' or 'What shall we wear?'  32 For after all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things.  33 But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these things shall be added to you.  34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble“ (NKJV).

Luke 11:9-13, "So I say to you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.  10 For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened.  11 If a son asks for bread from any father among you, will he give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent instead of a fish?  12 Or if he asks for an egg, will he offer him a scorpion?  13 If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him“ (NKJV).

John 5:41-45, ”41 "I do not receive honor from men.  42 But I know you, that you do not have the love of God in you.  43 I have come in My Father's name, and you do not receive Me; if another comes in his own name, him you will receive.  44 How can you believe, who receive honor from one another, and do not seek the honor that comes from the only God“ (NKJV)?

Rom 2:11, ”1 Therefore you are inexcusable, O man, whoever you are who judge, for in whatever you judge another you condemn yourself; for you who judge practice the same things. 2 But we know that the judgment of God is according to truth against those who practice such things. 3 And do you think this, O man, you who judge those practicing such things, and doing the same, that you will escape the judgment of God? 4 Or do you despise the riches of His goodness, forbearance, and longsuffering, not knowing that the goodness of God leads you to repentance? 5 But in accordance with your hardness and your impenitent heart you are treasuring up for yourself wrath in the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God, 6 who "will render to each one according to his deeds":   7 eternal life to those who by patient continuance in doing good seek for glory, honor, and immortality; 8 but to those who are self-seeking and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness — indignation and wrath, 9 tribulation and anguish, on every soul of man who does evil, of the Jew first and also of the Greek; 10 but glory, honor, and peace to everyone who works what is good, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. 11 For there is no partiality with God“ (NKJV).

Col 3:1-4, ”1 If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. 2 Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth. 3 For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. 4 When Christ who is our life appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory“ (NKJV).

Heb 11:6, ”6 But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him“ (NKJV).

Heb 11:8-10, ”8 By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to the place which he would receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going. 9 By faith he dwelt in the land of promise as in a foreign country, dwelling in tents with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise; 10 for he waited for the city which has foundations, whose builder and maker is God“ (NKJV).

CONCLUSION:

So, as the wise man so adequately states the case - Psalms 90:10-12, ”10 The days of our lives are seventy years; And if by reason of strength they are eighty years, Yet their boast is only labor and sorrow; For it is soon cut off, and we fly away. 11 Who knows the power of Your anger? For as the fear of You, so is Your wrath. 12 So teach us to number our days, That we may gain a heart of wisdom“ (NKJV).

THE POSSIBLE RESULTS WHEN ONE DOES NOT PREPARE WISELY

Matthew 25:1-13, The Parable of the Wise and Foolish Virgins

”1 Then the kingdom of heaven shall be likened to ten virgins who took their lamps and

went out to meet the bridegroom.

2 Now five of them were wise, and five were foolish.

3 Those who were foolish took their lamps and took no oil with them,

4 but the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps.

5 But while the bridegroom was delayed, they all slumbered and slept.

6 "And at midnight a cry was heard: 'Behold, the bridegroom is coming; go out to meet him!'

7 Then all those virgins arose and trimmed their lamps.

8 And the foolish said to the wise, 'Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.'

9 But the wise answered, saying, 'No, lest there should not be enough for us and you; but go rather to those who sell, and buy for yourselves.'

10 And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went in with him to the wedding; and the door was shut.

11 "Afterward the other virgins came also, saying, 'Lord, Lord, open to us!'

12 But he answered and said, 'Assuredly, I say to you, I do not know you.'

13 "Watch therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour in which the Son of Man is coming“ (NKJV).

Commentary by Adam Clark –

Matthew 25:1, ”Then shall the kingdom of heaven be likened unto ten virgins, which took their lamps, and went forth to meet the bridegroom. [Then shall the kingdom of heaven] The state of Jews and professing Christians-or the state of the visible church at the time of the destruction of Jerusalem, and in the Day of Judgment: for the parable appears to relate to both those periods. And particularly at the time in which Christ shall come to judge the world, it shall appear what kind of reception his Gospel has met with.

[Virgins] Denoting the purity of the Christian doctrine and character. In this parable, the bridegroom is generally understood to mean Jesus Christ. The feast, that state of felicity to which he has promised to raise his genuine followers. The wise, or prudent, and foolish virgins, those who truly enjoy, and those who only profess the purity and holiness of his religion. The oil, the grace and salvation of God, or that faith which works by love. The vessel, the heart in which this oil is contained. The lamp, the profession of enjoying the burning and shining light of the Gospel of Christ. Going forth, the whole of their sojourning upon earth.

Matthew 25:2, ”And five of them were wise, and five were foolish. [Five of them were wise] Or, provident, phronimoi-they took care to make a proper provision beforehand, and left nothing to be done in the last moment. [Five were foolish] Moorai, which might be translated careless, is generally rendered foolish; but this does not agree so well with phronimoi, provident, or prudent, in the first clause; which is the proper meaning, of the word. Mooros, in the Etymological, is thus defined, me hoar to deon, he who sees not what is proper or necessary. These did not see that it was necessary to have oil in their vessels (the salvation of God in their souls), as well as a burning lamp of religious profession, Matt 25:3-4.

Matthew 25:3, They that were foolish took their lamps, and took no oil with them:

Matthew 25:4, ”But the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps. [Took oil in their vessels] They not only had a sufficiency of oil in their lamps, but they carried a vessel with oil to recruit their lamps, when it should be found expedient. This, the foolish or improvident neglected to do: hence, when the oil that was in their lamps burned out, they had none to pour into the lamp to maintain the flame.

Matthew 25:5, ”While the bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept. [The bridegroom tarried] The coming of the bridegroom to an individual may imply his death: his coming to the world-the final judgment. The delay-the time from a man's birth till his death, in the first case; in the second, the time from the beginning to the end of the world.

[Slumbered and slept.] Or, enustaxan kai ekatheudon, they became drowsy and fell asleep. As sleep is frequently used in the sacred writings for death, so drowsiness, which precedes sleep, may be considered as pointing out the decays of the constitution, and the sicknesses which precede death.

Matthew 25:6, And at midnight there was a cry made, Behold, the bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet him. [At midnight there was a cry] The Jewish weddings were generally celebrated in the night; yet they usually began at the rising of the evening star; but in this case there was a more than ordinary delay.

[Behold, the bridegroom cometh] What an awful thing to be summoned to appear before the Judge of quick and dead!

Matthew 25:7, ”Then all those virgins arose, and trimmed their lamps. [Trimmed their lamps.] Ekosmeesan, adorned them. I have seen some of the eastern lamps or lanthorns, the body of which was a skeleton of wood and threads, covered with a very thin transparent membrane, or very fine gauze, and decorated with flowers painted on it. It is probable that the nuptial lamps were highly decorated in this way; though the act mentioned here may mean no more than preparing the lamps for burning. There are certain preparations which most persons believe they must make at the approach of death; but, alas! it is often too late. The lamp is defiled, the light almost out, and the oil expended; and what adorning is a wretched sinner, struggling in the agonies of death, capable of preparing for his guilty soul!

Matthew 25:8, ”And the foolish said unto the wise, Give us of your oil; for our lamps are gone out. [Our lamps are gone out.] Sbennuntai, are going out. So then it is evident that they were once lighted. They had once hearts illuminated and warmed by faith and love; but they had backslidden from the salvation of God, and now they are excluded from heaven, because, through their carelessness, they have let the light that was in them become darkness, and have not applied in time for a fresh supply of the salvation of God.

Matthew 25:9, But the wise answered, saying, Not so; lest there be not enough for us and you: but go ye rather to them that sell, and buy for yourselves.“ [Lest there be not enough for us and you] These had all been companions in the Christian course, and there was a time when they might have been helpful to each other; but that time is now past forever-none has a particle of grace to spare, not even to help the soul of the dearest relative! The grace which every man receives is just enough to save his own soul; he has no merits to bequeath to the church; no work of supererogation which can be placed to the account of another.

Matthew 25:10, ”And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came; and they that were ready went in with him to the marriage: and the door was shut. [While they went to buy, the bridegroom came] What a dismal thing it is, not to discover the emptiness of one's heart of all that is good, till it is too late to make any successful application for relief! God alone knows how many are thus deceived.

[And they that were ready] They who were prepared-who had not only a burning lamp of an evangelical profession, but had oil in their vessels, the faith that works by love in their hearts, and their lives adorned with all the fruits of the Spirit.

[The door was shut.] Sinners on a death-bed too often meet with those deceitful merchants, who promise them salvation for a price which is of no value in the sight of God. Come unto me, says Jesus, and buy: there is no salvation but through his blood-no hope for the sinner but that which is founded upon his sacrifice and death. The door was shut-dreadful and fatal words!

Matthew 25:11, ”Afterward came also the other virgins, saying, Lord, Lord, open to us.

[Afterward came also the other virgins, saying, Lord, Lord] Earnest prayer, when used in time, may do much good: but it appears, from this parable, that there may come a time when prayer even to Jesus may be too late!-namely when the door is shut-when death has separated the body and the soul.

Matthew 25:12, ”But he answered and said, Verily I say unto you, I know you not.

[I know you not.] As if he had said, Ye are not of my company-ye were neither with the bride, nor the bridegroom: ye slept while the others were in procession. I do not acknowledge you for my disciples-ye are not like him who is love-ye refused to receive his grace-ye sinned it away when ye had it; now you are necessarily excluded from that kingdom where nothing but love and purity can dwell.

Matthew 25:13, ”Watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of man cometh. [Watch therefore] If to watch be to employ ourselves chiefly about the business of our salvation, alas! how few of those who are called Christians are there who do watch! How many who slumber! How many who are asleep! How many seized with a lethargy! How many quite dead!

[Wherein the Son of man cometh.] These words are omitted by many excellent MSS., most of the versions, and several of the fathers.

Editorial:  ANOTHER LOOK AT ELDERS

The church established by our Lord on Pentecost (Acts 2:1-47), is an institution that is to have elders, deacons, and members. When we fail to recognize these relationships as important ingredients in the building process of the congregation we are not wise.  The Scriptures tell us in Phil 1:1-2, ”1 Paul and Timothy, bondservants of Jesus Christ, To all the saints in Christ Jesus who are in Philippi, with the bishops and deacons: 2 Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ“ (NKJV).that the church at Philippi had elders, deacons, and saints (i.e. members), this arrangement constitutes a fully matured congregation of God’s people. Whenever we fail to strive for maturity as a congregation we are failing to do our best as saints (i.e., faithful members in the congregation).

We all need to be aware of the fact that God does not want those that are not qualified to act as elders or deacons. The qualifications of elders are clearly shown in two places by the apostle Paul, note the following qualifications of ”overseers, elders, bishops, shepherds“:

1 Tim 3:1-7,

”1This is a faithful saying: If a man desires the position of a bishop, he desires a good work. 2 A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, temperate, sober-minded, of good behavior, hospitable, able to teach; 3 not given to wine, not violent, not greedy for money, but gentle, not quarrelsome, not covetous; 4 one who rules his own house well, having his children in submission with all reverence 5(for if a man does not know how to rule his own house, how will he take care of the church of God?); 6 not a novice, lest being puffed up with pride he fall into the same condemnation as the devil. 7 Moreover he must have a good testimony among those who are outside, lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil“ (NKJV).

Titus 1:5-9,

”5 For this reason I left you in Crete, that you should set in order the things that are lacking, and appoint elders in every city as I commanded you — 6 if a man is blameless, the husband of one wife, having faithful children not accused of dissipation or insubordination.

These two references give the qualifications

other Scriptures give us the work they are to do while they serve as elders.

The work that elders do is also taught upon the pages of God’s Written Word, please note some of them:

Stop the mouth of troublemakers – rebuke them sharply

Do not give heed to fables and the commandments of men who are unsound

Titus 1:10-16,

For there are many insubordinate, both idle talkers and deceivers, especially those of the circumcision, 11 whose mouths must be stopped, who subvert whole households, teaching things which they ought not, for the sake of dishonest gain. 12 One of them, a prophet of their own, said, "Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons." 13 This testimony is true. Therefore rebuke them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith, 14 not giving heed to Jewish fables and commandments of men who turn from the truth. 15 To the pure all things are pure, but to those who are defiled and unbelieving nothing is pure; but even their mind and conscience are defiled. 16 They profess to know God, but in works they deny Him, being abominable, disobedient, and disqualified for every good work“ (NKJV).

·        Serving as an elder involves work

1 Timothy 3:1,

”This is a faithful saying: If a man desires the position of a bishop, he desires a good work“ (NKJV).

·        Shepherd the flock (i.e., the membership)

·        Being examples to the flock (i.e., the membership)

1 Peter 5:1-4,

”1The elders who are among you I exhort, I who am a fellow elder and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and also a partaker of the glory that will be revealed: 2 Shepherd the flock of God which is among you, serving as overseers, not by compulsion but willingly, not for dishonest gain but eagerly; 3 nor as being lords over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock; 4 and when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that does not fade away“ (NKJV).

·        They watch for the souls of the flock (i.e. the members)

Hebrews 13:17,

”17 Obey those who rule over you, and be submissive, for they watch out for your souls, as those who must give account. Let them do so with joy and not with grief, for that would be unprofitable for you“ (NKJV).

ARE THERE TWO OR MORE QUALIFIED MEN IN THE CONGREGATION?

Only the men that are of age and experience know whether they can qualify.

It is the work of the congregation to periodically discuss this issue.

We have 5 or 6 men who may qualify for this office.

Maybe they do not want to be elders.

We need to discuss it in our June business meeting

Perhaps we are in a position to have elders and do not know it

It has been about 5 years since we have discussed this matter about appointing men to the office.

Maybe we should examine the possibilities here and if we do not have men who desire to be elders or for some other reasons we cannot appoint them at this time we will just have to wait for our men to mature and become qualified sometime in the future – we will see!

DOES THE CONGREGATION NEED ELDERS?

Every congregation needs to have a plurality of qualified elders to oversee the flock. The instruction of Paul to Timothy verifies this fact, please note the reference - Titus 1:5-8, ”5 For this cause left I thee in Crete, that thou shouldest set in order the things that were wanting, and appoint elders in every city, as I gave thee charge; 6 if any man is blameless, the husband of one wife, having children that believe, who are not accused of riot or unruly. 7 For the bishop must be blameless, as God's steward; not self-willed, not soon angry, no brawler, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre; 8 but given to hospitality, as lover of good, sober-minded, just, holy, self-controlled“ (ASV). In this scripture Paul indicates that something is wanting (i.e. missing/lacking in the church). That which is missing will be completed through the appointment of elders.

The only correct action that may be taken by a congregation that has qualified men to fill the office of elders is to appoint them as the scriptures indicate. There must not be an appointment of unqualified men or men who do not want to be elders. The work of overseeing the congregation is a great work and not to be entered into without careful consideration by any man.

SOME THOUGHTS ABOUT GOSPEL MEETINGS

One of the great debates that continue year after year is the importance and value of gospel (i.e. revival) meetings today. There is ample evidence to indicate that gospel meetings today are not as well attended today as they were 100 years ago. It is also true that not as many people are converted in gospel meetings today as they were 100 years ago. Yet, we must realize that we are living in a different world today than were our for-fathers of 100 years past. Indeed, we live in an age where the mechanics of this world are distracting millions of people to such a degree that they hardly have time to focus their attention on personal preparation for eternity, focus on the best source of knowledge for their family experience, or maintain focus on their personal commitment to their job. Many people today are living (i.e. or trying to) live up to the expectations and demands of a secular media that tells them how to live, what to buy, how to dress, where to go, what to eat, the kind of car that fits their profile, and on and on until they suffer an overload of information and complete stalling of personal accomplishment and satisfaction with life itself. Regardless of all this, we must work for today and leave the past to the past, let us do the work of evangelizing today just as faithfully as those 100 years ago. We are to sow the seed, God will give the increase.

GOD HAS THE ANSWER:

Matthew 11:28-30, ”28 Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light“ (KJV).

Indeed, mankind today may hear, and obey God’s instruction on how to be saved from sin and live an exemplary life before God and man in this world but he must first hear the gospel of Christ to know what he is to be and to do. Let us, therefore encourage self, relatives, friends, and everyone that we know to come and hear the gospel message during our upcoming gospel meeting with Gary Fiscus from Salem, Indiana – May 15-20, 2005. Those that we know will benefit from the gospel meeting if they will come for even one service, let us all get to work and do whatever we can to prepare our friends and acquaintances for the meeting.

See you next issue, Lord willing!

GOD  HAS  THE  ANSWER!

Often people run into problems while they live life here in the world, the fact is problems come to both the righteous and the unrighteous. The way to deal with problem that we experience in life often evades us as we suffer in silence, yet there is a source of information that deals with every problem in our lives. That source for problem solving is actually available in every country and to all people; it is God’s ”Written Word’ (i.e. the Bible).

God says via the Written Word that it is a complete guide for every person – ”Grace to you and peace be multiplied in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord; 3 seeing that his divine power hath granted unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that called us by his own glory and virtue“ (ASV),  2 Peter 1:2-3,

God has also revealed, that part of our problems in life stem from our own inability to solve or to deal correctly with the problems that we do experience because we cannot understand and do not know how to do so - Jeremiah 10:23, ”O LORD, I know the way of man is not in himself; It is not in man who walks to direct his own steps“ (NKJV).

Because we are so helpless in the area of understanding ourselves and what is best for us, God (i.e.

”our ”Creator“) has provided us with a guide book so that we can understand and make corrections in our life so that we will be able to live out our life here with a degree of joy and happiness instead of confusion, sorrow, regret, and hatred – Notice the following Biblical references in regard to this concept:…

1.         In the Old Testament there are many references to man’s need of help from God, God will help us today if we will faithfully serve and honor Him:

Psalms 22:19, ”But You, O LORD, do not be far from me; O My Strength, hasten to help me“ (NKJV)!

Psalms 33:20-22, ”20 our soul waits for the LORD; He is our help and our shield.

21 For our heart shall rejoice in Him, because we have trusted in His holy name.

22 Let your mercy, O LORD, be upon us, just as we hope in you“ (NKJV).

Psalms 146:3-6, ”3 do not put your trust in princes, Nor in a son of man, in whom there is no help.

4 His spirit departs, he returns to his earth; in that very day his plans perish.

5 Happy is he who has the God of Jacob for his help, whose hope is in the LORD his God,

6 Who made heaven and earth, The Sea, and all that is in them; who keeps truth forever,“

2.        In the New Testament there are also many references that teach God will help us in time of calamity, trouble, trial and during times of tears and grief if we are faithful and will call on Him:

The Promise of Rest From   God - Hebrews 4:1-16

”1 Therefore, since a promise remains of entering His rest, let us fear lest any of you seem to have come short

of it. 2 For indeed the gospel was preached to us as well as to them; but the word which they heard did not

profit them, not being mixed with faith in those who heard it. 3 For we who have believed do enter that rest,

as He has said: "So I swore in My wrath, 'They shall not enter My rest, although the works were finished

from the foundation of the world. 4 For He has spoken in a certain place of the seventh day in this way: "And

God rested on the seventh day from all His Works;“ 5 and again in this place: "They shall not enter My

rest.“  6 Since therefore it remains that some must enter it, and those to whom it was first preached did not

enter because of disobedience, 7 again He designates a certain day, saying in David, "Today," after such a

long time, as it has been said: "Today, if you will hear His voice, Do not harden your hearts."8 For if Joshua

had given them rest, then He would not afterward have spoken of another day. 9 There remains therefore a

rest for the people of God. 10 For he who has entered His rest has himself also ceased from his works as God

did from His. 11 Let us therefore be diligent to enter that rest, lest anyone fall according to the same example

of disobedience. 12 For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword,

piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts

and intents of the heart. 13 And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are naked and open

to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account. 14 Seeing then that we have a great High Priest who has

passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. 15 For we do not have a

High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet

without sin. 16 Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace

to help in time of need“

CONCLUSION:

Therefore let us so live our lives here in this word so that when the final judgment of all mankind

by Jesus Christ {cf. John 12:48) takes place we will be found acceptable.

There is a terrible resurrection awaiting the wicked - Heb 10:27-31, ”27 but a certain fearful

expectation of judgment, and fiery indignation which will devour the adversaries. 28 Anyone who has

rejected Moses' law dies without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses. 29 Of how much worse

punishment, do you suppose, will he be thought worthy who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, counted

the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified a common thing, and insulted the Spirit of grace? 30

For we know Him who said, "Vengeance is Mine, I will repay," says the Lord. And again, "The LORD will

judge His people." 31 It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God“ (NKJV).

A wise person will surely understand these statements found in God’s Written Word about the need to pursue righteous living while living here on this earth. To ignore the warnings and admonitions from God regarding this matter is a grave mistake that the honest student of God’s Word will take to heart and make every possible effort personally to walk in the ways of God throughout his/her life.

Remember the congregational singing at 3:00 P.M. Sunday – May 15, 2005.

We have invited singers from everywhere to join us.

We will pray that many song leaders will attend.

Will you plan to join us?

You will be welcome here.

WISDOM IS DEMONSTRATED THROUGH OBEDIENCE:

Wisdom is seen whenever a person understands the concept of obedience to God's instruction and obeys God. The person who really believes in God as the Author of the Bible will gladly demonstrate that belief (i.e. faith) in God by obeying all of God's commands that apply to him. Even if the person cannot obey God's instructions always, he/she will constantly plead with God for strength and seek greater understanding for the purpose of being pleasing to God through obedience. Please notice the following  passages of Scripture from God's Book that teaches this concept:

JEREMIAH, the Old Testament Prophet of God understood this principle when he returned to Jerusalem and saw the desolate condition of the city and the fortifications, He therefore honestly sought to lead the people back to God so that God would bless them in the work of rebuilding after the seventy-years of captivity in Babylon - Daniel 9:3-5, "3 And I set my face unto the Lord God, to seek by prayer and supplication, with fasting, and sackcloth, and ashes: 4 And I prayed unto the LORD my God, and made my confession, and said, O Lord, the great and dreadful God, keeping the covenant and mercy to them that love him, and to them that keep his commandments ; 5 We have sinned, and have committed iniquity, and have done wickedly, and have rebelled, even by departing from thy precepts and from" (KJV).

SOLOMON, the wisest man of all history understood this principle of obedience too: - Ecclesiastes 12:13-14, "13 Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man. 14 For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil" (KJV).

THE APOSTLE JOHN understood this principle too: - 1 John 2:3-5, "3 And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments. 4 He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. 5 But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him" (KJV).

1 John 3:22, "22 And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments , and do those things that are pleasing in his sight.

1 John 5:2-3, "2 By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God, and keep his commandments. 3 For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous" (KJV).       See you next issue, Lord willing!  --- glc

LIVING FOR GOD

Editorial:  Garreth  L.  Clair

Today there are many different views espoused by many different people from many different cultures and nations. To suggest that one size fits all (i.e. one lifestyle fits everyone perfectly) is ridiculous to most people. The very idea that there is one lifestyle that will fit everyone on earth is a true philosophy that has its origin in God’s great design for humanity - Genesis 1 and Matthew 28:18-20. There are so many different customs, languages, ancient religious philosophies, and personal preferences currently in the world that it would surely seem to be the ravings of a mad-man to insist that everyone in the world can live the same lifestyle and prosper in their endeavors.

Long ago (i.e. at the beginning), God planned for everything to work out for the good of all humanity. As a matter of fact, God created everything in six days and looked upon all that had been created and declared it ”very good“. - Genesis 1:26-31, ”26 Then God said," Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth." 27 So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. 28 Then God blessed them, and God said to them, "Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth." 29 And God said, "See, I have given you every herb that yields seed which is on the face of all the earth, and every tree whose fruit yields seed; to you it shall be for food. 30 Also, to every beast of the earth, to every bird of the air, and to everything that creeps on the earth, in which there is life, I have given every green herb for food"; and it was so. 31 Then God saw everything that He had made, and indeed it was very good. So the evening and the morning were the sixth day“ (NKJV).

Consequently, whenever anyone on earth since this beginning leaves the instruction of the Creator, to plot his/her own independent course in life, he has surely departed from the path designed for his/her own good. Indeed, it may seem to created beings that their ideas about what is best are better than any suggestions of the Creator, instructions that the Creator has seen fit to have written down (i.e. the Bible) for their  well-being while they live out their life here in the world. Yet, in spite of the departures from the Divine Pattern for man’s well-being while he live here in the world, God has the answers to all of man’s needs – but man must volunteer to abide within those regulations or make a shambles of their life and existence here. This concept is clearly advanced in the statements of God found in the Holy Scripture, cf. Jeremiah 10:23, ”O LORD, I know the way of man is not in himself; It is not in man who walks to direct his own steps“ (Proverbs 16:9, ”A man's heart plans his way, But the LORD directs his steps“ (NKJV).

Proverbs 20:24, ”24 A man's steps are of the LORD; How then can a man understand his own way“ (NKJV)?

1 Peter 2:22, ”Servants, be submissive to your masters with all fear, not only to the good and gentle, but also to the harsh. 19 For this is commendable, if because of conscience toward God one endures grief, suffering wrongfully. 20 For what credit is it if, when you are beaten for your faults, you take it patiently? But when you do good and suffer, if you take it patiently, this is commendable before God. 21 For to this you were called, because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that you should follow His steps: 22 "Who committed no sin, Nor was deceit found in His mouth“

Therefore, to reject those Divine instructions that God has caused to be written down for our good (i.e. the Bible – or any part of it), is to destroy our hope of any constructive life or accomplishments in life. To reject God’s Written Word as basis for building a life while we live here on the earth is surely spiritual suicide, 2 Thessalonians 1:7-9, ”7 and to give you who are troubled rest with us when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with His mighty angels, 8 in flaming fire taking vengeance on those who do not know God, and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 These shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power“ (NKJV).

As the apostle Paul has stated, Hebrews 10:27-31, ”28 Anyone who has rejected Moses' law dies without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses. 29 Of how much worse punishment, do you suppose, will he be thought worthy who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, counted the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified a common thing, and insulted the Spirit of grace? 30 For we know Him who said, "Vengeance is Mine, I will repay," says the Lord. And again, "The LORD will judge His people."   31 It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God“ (NKJV).

… A Person Cannot Successfully Argue With God …

GOD ALWAYS KNOWS WHAT IS BEST FOR US:

Psalms 34:10, ”10 The young lions lack and suffer hunger; But those who seek the LORD shall not lack any good thing“ (NKJV).

Psalms 37:23-24, ”3 The steps of a good  man are ordered by the LORD, And He delights in his way. 24 Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down; For the LORD upholds him with His hand“ (NKJV).

Psalms 69:16, ”16 Hear me, O LORD, for Your loving-kindness is good;

Turn to me according to the multitude of Your tender mercies“ (NKJV).

Psalms 84:11, ”11 For the LORD God is a sun and shield; The LORD will give grace and glory; No good thing will He withhold  From those who walk uprightly“ (NKJV).

Psalms 86:5, ”5 For You, Lord, are good, and ready to forgive, And abundant in mercy to all those who call upon You.

Ps 119:39-40, ”39 Turn away my reproach which I dread, For Your judgments are good, 40 Behold, I long for Your precepts; Revive me in Your righteousness.“

Proverbs 12:2, ”A good man obtains favor from the LORD, But a man of wicked intentions He will condemn“ (NKJV)

GOD IS IN COMPLETE CONTROL OF ALL THINGS INCLUDING MAN

CONSEQUENTLY, HE HAS THE RIGHT AND THE POWER TO REQUIRE OF ALL CREATION, ”OBEDIENCE“ – cf. Hebrews 5:8-9:

Romans 9:14-21, ”What shall we say then? Is there unrighteousness with God? Certainly not! 15 For He says to Moses, "I will have mercy on whomever I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whomever I will have compassion."   16 So then it is not of him who wills, nor of him who runs, but of God who shows mercy. 17 For the Scripture says to the Pharaoh, "For this very purpose I have raised you up, that I may show My power in you, and that My name may be declared in all the earth."   18 Therefore He has mercy on whom He wills, and whom He wills He hardens. 19 You will say to me then, "Why does He still find fault? For who has resisted His will?" 20 But indeed, O man, who are you to reply against God? Will the thing formed say to him who formed it, "Why have you made me like this?" 21 Does not the potter have power over the clay, from the same lump to make one vessel for honor and another for dishonor?

IN THE END, GOD’S PRIORITIES WILL REIGN SUPREME:

1 Corinthians 15:50-58, ”Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; nor does corruption inherit incorruption. 51 Behold, I tell you a mystery: We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed —  52 in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. 53 For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality. 54 So when this corruptible has put on incorruption, and this mortal has put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written: "Death is swallowed up in victory."  55 "O Death, where is your sting? O Hades, where is your victory?"  56 The sting of death is sin, and the strength of sin is the law. 57 But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. 58 Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labor is not in vain in the Lord“

… Submission To God Is Always Profitable …

There is no downside to building a life according to God’s will (i.e. the Bible – the Written Word of God). Whenever man finally comes to realize that his only hope is God and God’s way, then man will see (i.e. understand) that God was right all the time. God gives mankind guidelines in all areas of life, note the following areas addressed by God in the Written Word:

MARRIAGE:

God originated marriage in the Garden of Eden between Adam and Eve -                                     Genesis 2:22-24, ”22 Then the rib which the LORD God had taken from man He made into a woman, and He brought her to the man. 23 And Adam said: "This is now bone of my bones And flesh of my flesh; She shall be called Woman, Because she was taken out of Man." 24 Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh“ (NKJV).

God’s law about marriage – one man + one woman for life!  (Rom 7:2-3)

No sexual relationship between a man and a man!  (Rom 1:26-27)

No sexual relationship between a woman and a woman! (Rom 1:26-27)

No sexual relationship between a human and an animal!  (Ex 22:19; Lev 18:23)

CONSIDER THIS:

There is strength in the God established institution of marriage as recorded in the Holy

Scriptures for men and women in every generation. Whenever mankind circumvents God’s Divine Plan for marriage, the marriage is in trouble from the start and will not be healthy for either the man or the woman and will probably fail in due time. The marriage based on God’s instruction will succeed because God knows what is best for man and for woman.

Whenever a marriage fails it is generally because the man or woman or both do not understand their role in the union as God has ordained it.

First, in the relationship God wants the man and the woman to be free from premarital sex relationships,

Second, God wants the man to be the head of the woman,

Third, God wants the husband to love the wife as Christ loved the church,

Fourth, God wants the husband to be the primary provider for the family,

Fifth, God wants the wife to be in subjection to her ”own husband“,

Sixth, God wants the family unit to serve Him,

Seventh, God wants the parents of children in the family to ”bring up the children in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.

These are a few of the Biblical requirements for a successful marriage.

SCRIPTURAL REFERENCES – Ephesians 5:22-33.

HUSBAND-WIFE RELATIONSHIP:

Colossians 3:18-19, ”18 Wives, submit to your own husbands, as is fitting in the Lord.

19 Husbands, love your wives and do not be bitter toward them“ (NKJV).

Eph 5:22-33, ”Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. 23 For the husband is head of the wife, as also Christ is head of the church; and He is the Savior of the body. 24 Therefore, just as the church is subject to Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in everything. 25 Husbands , love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her, 26 that He might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word, 27 that He might present her to Himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she should be holy and without blemish. 28 So husbands ought to love their own wives as their own bodies; he who loves his wife loves himself. 29 For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as the Lord does the church. 30 For we are members of His body, of His flesh and of His bones. 31 "For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh."   32 This is a great mystery, but I speak concerning Christ and the church. 33 Nevertheless let each one of you in particular so love his own wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband.“ (NKJV).

CONSIDER THIS:

The ideals presented here from God’s Book are not difficult to understand, the problems between husband and wives are often caused because the man or the woman or both do not continue faithfully in the instruction of God.

First, adultery of one or the other partner in a marriage is a violation of the marriage covenant. Whenever the husband or the wife commit adultery [i.e. Heb 13:4, ”Marriage is honorable among all, and the bed undefiled; but fornicators and adulterers God will judge“ (NKJV).] they have refused to abide in the instruction of God therefore causing disruption and possibly severance of the marriage.

Second, whenever the husband fails to heed the instruction from God that requires man to understand the problems of the woman [i.e. 1 Peter 3:7, ”Husbands, likewise, dwell with them with understanding, giving honor to the wife, as to the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life, that your prayers may not be hindered“ (NKJV)], he may  treat her unkindly, spiteful, or abusively, this will cause upheaval and possibly a severing of the relationship. To dissolve a marriage over such matters is contrary to God’s will for the marriage.

Third, both of the marriage partners are to yield to one another so that there will be no temptation to become unfaithful to the marriage vow [Col 3:18, ”Wives, submit to your own husbands, as is fitting in the Lord. - Eph 5:22, ”Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord“ (NKJV).]

FAMILY RELATIONSHIP:

Exodus 20:12, ”12 "Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land which the LORD your God is giving you“ (NKJV).

Deuteronomy 5:16, ”16 'Honor your father and your mother, as the LORD your God has commanded you, that your days may be long, and that it may be well with you in the land which the LORD your God is giving you“ (NKJV).

Eph 6:1-4, ”Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 2 "Honor your father and mother," which is the first commandment with promise: 3 "that it may be well with you and you may live long on the earth."   4 And you, fathers, do not provoke your children to wrath, but bring them up in the training and admonition of the Lord.

CONSIDER THIS:

Parents have a great work as they try to bring up their children according to God’s instruction in any age. The world [i.e. society], is always pulling at the children as well as the parents, so not only do parents have to struggle with the devil but with the evils in society that pull the family apart also. Good, faithful, and dedicated parents will do all that they can to do in raising their family according to God’s will, then the children will become independent thinkers and will begin to look at the good and the bad in the world and will have their own choices to make, either good or bad. Yet, godly parents will continue to exert a good influence over their children even when they are gone from home to live their own lives.

NOTE THE GOOD EXAMPLE OF LOIS AND EUNICE THAT PAUL REFERS TO IN

2 Timothy 1:5: ” when I call to remembrance the genuine faith that is in you, which dwelt first in your grandmother Lois  and your mother Eunice , and I am persuaded is in you also“ (NKJV).

RELATIONSHIP TO GOD:

Matt 22:37-38, ”37 Jesus said to him, "You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.'  38 This is the first and great commandment“ (NKJV).

John 14:15-16, ”"If you love Me, keep My commandments“.

John 14:21, ”21 He who has My commandments and keeps them, it is he who loves Me. And he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and manifest Myself to him."

John 15:10, ”10 If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love, just as I have kept My Father's commandments and abide in His love“ (NKJV).

CONSIDER THIS:

Good relationship with God is maintained throughout our life through our conscious obedience to God’s instruction. This matter of independent thinking outside the Bible leads one to question the wisdom of following some of God’s instruction; this will ultimately lead to apostasy or turning away from God all together. Christians who honor God’ instructions and consistently live according to God’s standard are wise. Solomon, the wisest man ever to live on the earth says in the closing of his writings - Eccl 12:13-14, ”13 Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God and keep His commandments, For this is man's all. 14 For God will bring every work into judgment,

Including every secret thing, Whether good or evil“ (NKJV).

RELATIONSHIP TO OTHER PEOPLE:

Matt 22:39-40, ”39 And the second is like it: 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.'  40 On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets."

Mark 12:33, ”33 And to love Him with all the heart, with all the understanding, with all the soul, and with all the strength, and to love one's neighbor as oneself, is more than all the whole burnt offerings and sacrifices."

Rom 13:9-10, ”9 For the commandments, "You shall not commit adultery," "You shall not murder," "You shall not steal," "You shall not bear false witness," "You shall not covet," and if there is any other commandment, are all summed up in this saying, namely, "You shall love your neighbor as yourself."   10 Love does no harm to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfillment of the law“.

Eph 4:25, ”Therefore, putting away lying, "Let each one of you speak truth with his neighbor," for we are members of one another“ (NKJV).

CONSIDER THIS:

The Biblical references listed here show a lifestyle quality that is also necessary  for those that would live the life as a Christian ought. The importance that God attaches to the relationship between the Christian and the Christian’s neighbors is important in a number of ways:

First, good treatment by Christians of unbelievers is a sure way of building a good influence with them.

Second, our neighbors can never be converted from the world if we do not treat them fairly and honestly in our relationship with them.

Third, many unbelievers are led to Christ because they appreciate the quality of a family of Christians that live down the street – the neighbors have seen with their own eyes that there is something good to be found in true Christians, Christians like the neighbors down the street.

… Believers Are Salt and Light …

(Reference also in Mark 9:50; Luke 14:34, 35)

Matt 5:13-16, ”You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men. 14 "You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lamp-stand, and it gives light to all who are in the house.  16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.  NKJV

REMEMBER THESE FACTS, ”Christian“!

AN ARTICLE ABOUT THE HOLOCAUST

I'm not against the news media reporting about the "Jewish Holocaust". But why not report fair and balanced news; such as, "Slavery Holocaust", Abortion Holocaust, "Euthanasia Holocaust", "Embryos Holocaust", and "Stem Cell Holocaust". All of these come under the same heading of "shedding innocent blood" [Prov. 6:16-19, esp. v. 17c]. A nation that kills its own people is a nation without hope. Those who sow to the wind will reap the whirlwind [Hos. 8:7]. Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for "whatever one sows, that will he also reap" [Gal. 6:7].

Hell and Destruction are never full; and never satisfied are the eyes of man [Prov. 27:20]. Be very careful America!  We're on a slippery slope, and our bowl of wrath is filling up. Its not the Iraq war--it is our own immoral problems [Psalm 2:1-5; Prov. 9:10; Isa. 43:11; Heb. 4:13; Ecc. 12:13-14].

In the Last Day [John 12:48], All the nations will be gathered before Him {Jesus, Acts 17:31}, and He will separate them one from another [Mat. 25:32]. Then, each one of us will "appear before the judgment seat of Christ" [2 Cor. 5:10], and be judged each one according to his works [Rev. 20:13; John 6:28-29], and the Word of Jesus Christ [John 12:48;.                                                  … Article selected from the internet

IS THE BIBLE AN UNDERSTANDABLE BOOK?

Editorial:  Garreth  L.  Clair

One of the favorite complaints of the liberal scholar and others that do not believe in the Bible is, ”The Bible cannot be understood.“  This complaint cannot successfully be upheld whenever one examines the facts relating to their conclusion.  Whenever one approaches the Bible for study, the first fact that one must accept is that the Bible is a revelation from God and that since it has come to mankind via an absolutely  perfect and reliable source (i.e. the infallible God) it cannot contain error (i.e. mistakes) of any kind. This is the basis for building confidence in the contents and message of the Bible and for developing faith in its precepts.

The Bible contains a statement that is revealing and that may apply directly to the subject at hand,  ”for we walk by faith, not by sight“ - 2 Cor 5:1-7, ”1 For we know that if the earthly house of our tabernacle be dissolved, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal, in the heavens. 2 For verily in this we groan, longing to be clothed upon with our habitation which is from heaven: 3 if so be that being clothed we shall not be found naked. 4 For indeed we that are in this tabernacle do groan, being burdened; not for that we would be unclothed, but that we would be clothed upon, that what is mortal may be swallowed up of life. 5 Now he that wrought us for this very thing is God, who gave unto us the earnest of the Spirit. 6 Being therefore always of good courage, and knowing that, whilst we are at home in the body, we are absent from the Lord  7 (for we walk by faith , not by sight);“ (ASV)

To walk by faith is to walk according to God’s instruction, the Bible says of itself that it is ”the faith delivered once for all time“ - Jude 3, ”Beloved, while I was giving all diligence to write unto you of our common salvation, I was constrained to write unto you exhorting you to contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all delivered unto the saints.“ (ASV)

CONSIDER THIS:

The exegesis of verse 3 here is not difficult, Jude urges the followers of Christ to ”contend earnestly (i.e. teach it intently, seriously, gravely). The faith in the context is the system of truth (i.e. the Written Word, the Bible). Consequently, the Written Word of God is the faith by which we walk (i.e. live out our life as a Christian).

Life After Sixty-Five

While we live our life here in the world we must stop occasionally and reflect on the past, the present, and the future. The writer of the Psalms says, Psalms 90:14, ”Oh satisfy us in the morning with thy loving-kindness, that we may rejoice and be glad all our days. - Psalms 90:12, ”So teach us to number our days, that we may get us a heart of wisdom.“ (ASV). We must recognize the wisdom that comes from God’s Book as being the best that man can digest in his mind as he lives here among others with no concern for the God that has created this system in which we live and as Paul says, ”…have our being…“ {Acts 17:24-28, ”24 The God that made the world and all things therein, he, being Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands;

25 neither is he served by men's hands, as though he needed anything, seeing he himself giveth to all life, and breath, and all things;

26 and he made of one every nation of men to dwell on all the face of the earth, having determined (their) appointed seasons, and the bounds of their habitation;

27 that they should seek God, if haply they might feel after him and find him, though he is not far from each one of us:

28 for in him we live, and move, and have our being ; as certain even of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring.“ ASV}

THE EARLY YEARS

[Before accountability age has arrived]

The days of our infancy (i.e. innocence), are days when we have no cares of any sort, a time when our thoughts and actions are spontaneous and without guile. When we are children of innocence we cannot sin or be involved in sin for we do not have the ability to choose between righteousness and sin. When we are children we do things that are not thought out, we know nothing of danger and are never suspicious or judgmental. Indeed, while we are innocent children:

God is our continued protector and provider – we are safe in His hands, Matthew 19:14, ”14 But Jesus said, Suffer the little children, and forbid them not, to come unto me: for to such belongeth the kingdom of heaven.“

Infant children are completely innocent before God and will not possess the ability to transgress God’s laws until they have the ability to choose between good and evil, Ezekiel 18:20-22, ”20 The soul that sinneth, it shall die: the son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son; the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon him.

21 But if the wicked turn from all his sins that he hath committed, and keep all my statutes, and do that which is lawful and right, he shall surely live, he shall not die.

22 None of his transgressions that he hath committed shall be remembered against him: in his righteousness that he hath done he shall live.“ [ASV].

THE YEARS AFTER REACHING ACCOUNTABILITY

[When we can choose between good and evil]

Deciding to do right or do wrong is not a one time commitment, the matter of choosing to do right or wrong is a matter that plagues each person for their entire lifetime. Indeed, when we become accountable to God we are to choose to do God’s will every day but trials of faith often occur every day also. Because we choose once upon a time to become a Christian through grace, faith, and obedience that is not the end our commitment. The commitment to serve God faithfully all our lifetime is a continuing obligation,

CONSIDER THESE PASSAGES OF SCRIPTURE:

Rev 2:10, ”Fear not the things which thou art about to suffer: behold, the devil is about to cast some of you into prison, that ye may be tried; and ye shall have tribulation ten days. Be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee the crown of life.“

Titus 1:1-2, ”1 Paul, a servant of God, and an apostle of Jesus Christ, according to the faith of God's elect, and the knowledge of the truth which is according to godliness,

2 in hope of eternal life, which God, who cannot lie, promised before times eternal;“

Heb 6:18-19, ”18 that by two immutable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we may have a strong encouragement, who have fled for refuge to lay hold of the hope set before us:

19 which we have as an anchor of the soul, (a hope) both sure and steadfast and entering into that which is within the veil;“ ASV

2 Tim 4:6-8, ”6 For I am already being offered, and the time of my departure is come.

7 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the course, I have kept the faith:

8 henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give to me at that day; and not to me only, but also to all them that have loved his appearing.“ ASV

OLD AGE {Waiting for the end of life}

I have observed that older people have a greater appreciation for God and the things of God than at any other stage in life. Perhaps this is due to the reasoning by them that their remaining years are short upon the earth. Yet, older people, both men and women are just as responsible to choose righteousness over unrighteousness as their younger brethren and sisters in Christ. The Bible is full of examples of older men and women who have held on or are holding on to the life of righteousness that God expects.

God has encouraged His people to honor the grey headed ones for their wisdom in spiritual matters, we would do well to consider council from the aged that have lived long in faithful service to Almighty God.

Psalms 71:18, ”Even when I am old and gray, do not forsake me, O God, till I declare your power to the next generation, your might to all who are to come.“ (NIV)

Proverbs 16:31, ”Gray hair is a crown of splendor; it is attained by a righteous life.“

Proverbs 20:29, ”The glory of young men is their strength, gray hair the splendor of the old.“

Isaiah 46:4, ”4 Even to your old age and gray hairs I am he, I am he who will sustain you. I have made you and I will carry you; I will sustain you and I will rescue you.“ (NIV)

AT WHATEVER AGE – ALWAYS CHOOSE TO SERVE GOD FAITHFUL

UNDERSTANDING  THE  TEACHING  OF  JESUS (glc)

One of the great problems to understanding among differing religious philosophies is the problem over interpretation. Some religious teachers approach the Bible’s teaching without careful thought of the setting under consideration. By this I mean, there are circumstances, settings, those addressed, and other factors that are to be considered as one seeks understanding of a passage of the Bible. For instance, recently I head a T.V. evangelist interpret John 14:12-14 and apply the statement of Jesus to everyone that believes for all time.

This passage is a passage that is limited by the text to the apostles that he had personally selected and who had been with him from early in his personal ministry. As one examines the greater context it is clear that this passage, [John 14:12-14, ”12 Verily, verily, I say unto you, he that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater (works) than these shall he do; because I go unto the Father. 13 And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 If ye shall ask anything in my name, that will I d“ (ASV)], is limited to the work of the apostles after the Holy Spirit (i.e. the ‘Comforter’’) has come to them – having been sent by Jesus. Please notice that in this setting the apostles of Christ are being told of Christ leaving them and returning back to the Father and that Christ will himself petition the Father and the ”Comforter“ will come to guide them (i.e. the apostles“) into all truth.

John 14:5-29,

”5 Thomas saith unto him, Lord, we know not whither thou goest; how know we the way?

6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, and the truth, and the life: no one cometh unto the Father, but by me.

7 If ye had known me, ye would have known my Father also: from henceforth ye know him, and have seen him.

8 Philip saith unto him, Lord, show us the Father, and it sufficeth us.

9 Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and dost thou not know me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; how sayest thou, Show us the Father?

10 Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I say unto you I speak not from myself: but the Father abiding in me doeth his works.

11 Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me: or else believe me for the very works' sake.

12 Verily, verily, I say unto you, he that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater (works) than these shall he do; because I go unto the Father.

13 And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.

14 If ye shall ask anything in my name, that will I do.

15 If ye love me, ye will keep my commandments.

16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may be with you for ever,

17(even) the Spirit of truth: whom the world cannot receive; for it beholdeth him not, neither

knoweth him: ye know him; for he abideth with you, and shall be in you.

18 I will not leave you desolate: I come unto you.

19 Yet a little while, and the world beholdeth me no more; but ye behold me: because I live, ye shall live also.

20 In that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you.

21 He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself unto him.

22 Judas (not Iscariot) saith unto him, Lord, what is come to pass that thou wilt manifest thyself unto us, and not unto the world?

23 Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my word: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.

24 He that loveth me not keepeth not my words: and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father's who sent me.

25 These things have I spoken unto you, while (yet) abiding with you.

26 But the Comforter, (even) the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said unto you.

27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be fearful.

28 Ye heard how I said to you, I go away, and I come unto you. If ye loved me, ye would have rejoiced, because I go unto the Father: for the Father is greater than I.

29 And now I have told you before it come to pass, that, when it is come to pass, ye may believe“ [A

This context is not a general statement that includes everyone who believes for all time, it is limited to the apostles of Christ and to their carrying out of the great commission (i.e. Matthew 28:18-20).

Many of the religious people that teach the present day miraculous working of the Holy Spirit misapply a great portion of the New Testament. This is simply one among many false views that the Pentecostal people hold regarding the matter of application of Bible teaching. When one handles the New Testament as reckless as this instance, it is no wonder that there can be no serious dialogue about truth and the proper application of Bible truth with many of these religious zealots.

THE  WORK  OF  THE  CONGREGATION

There are many different religions in America today; someone has suggested that there are some 1200 different religious bodies in existence today. I have read much about the organization, worship, and work of many of these religious bodies and most of what they do in these areas cannot be found in the New Testament. Many religions today are involved in poverty programs, relief for third world countries, political projects, schemes for raising money, and many other works for which they have no authority from the Bible – The only work that Christ has authorized via the Written Word are:

1. Spreading the Gospel

The Lord commissioned His disciples to go out and preach the gospel to every creature and make disciples of all nations (Matt. 28:19-20). This is a primary function of the local church (1 Thess. 1:5-8). It is not something limited to the apostles or clergy, as the first century saints engaged in this practice (Acts 8:1-4). The church also partakes of this by financially supporting gospel preachers and evangelists to do this work (Phil. 4:10-20).

2. Edifying the Saints

To edify means to build up. This word, as used in the New Testament, always implies spiritual activity (e.g., teaching the word, encouragement, strengthening the saints – Eph. 4:11-16). It in no way infers social, entertainment, and recreation activities. These activities belong to the home. The apostle Paul teaches us that the church is responsible for the "edifying of itself in love" (Eph. 4:16). Each member of the local church has a part in this work.

3. Limited Benevolence

The congregation is called to see to the physical needs of her own (Acts 11:27-30). This is known as benevolence. There is no authority in Scripture for the local church to become a benevolent agency for the entire world – lost and saved alike. This is the work of individual Christians. The Bible makes a clear distinction between the work of the church and the work of an individual Christian (1 Tim. 5:3-16). The congregation has a responsibility to provide benevolence for those who are Christians and who are genuinely in need (2 Thess. 3:10).

All funds for such work were to be laid by in store on the first day of the week (1 Cor. 16:1-3). Fundraisers, bake sales, fairs, burger burns, hog roast, etc. are not the works of the congregation.

About  Understanding  God’s  Dealings  with  Mankind

[The  Question  Divine  Patterns]

A STARTING PLACE:

With regard to any subject it is necessary that we determine standards before we proceed. The concept of standards or the following of patterns is not simply a biblical philosophy, the idea of patterns is important in ever major human endeavor. Whenever a plan is devised to build any new building [a house, a shopping mall, or an automobile factory the creators and planners will first prepare a pattern that is to be followed by those that build the edifice]. Whenever a new automobile comes to the showroom of our automobile dealers, the car has first been planned by its creators based on a drawn scale or blueprint. The same is true whenever we want to make a measurement of distance, we have to appeal to a rule, [i.e. a foot is 12 inches, a yard is three feet, a mile is 5280 feet, a football field is 100 Yards or 300 feet], you see, in every endeavor it is necessary to follow a pattern.

Understand this, if there is no pattern to follow in building anything or determining values of materials, distances, weights, measure, and any other quality we could not exist in the world in any orderly fashion. As we come to understand this fact about patterns, measurements, and gauges, we are better prepared to follow the Divine Pattern that our Creator has given to us.

GOD  IS  COMPLETELY  PERFECT:

Matt 5:48, ”Ye therefore shall be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.“ ASV

God cannot give an imperfect pattern to mankind because HE IS PERFECT and HE HAS CREATED MAN. Since HE HAS CREATED MAN the GUIDEBOOK THAT HE HAS GIVEN MAN IS ALSO PERFECT. The Bible is perfect because God is perfect and God would not provide mankind with a guidebook that contained error or patterns that were imperfect. God has given mankind a Book to guide him through life and acquire eternal life as he understands and complies with God’s instruction. This is absolutely the truth – one cannot understand further than this if one is an atheist, agnostic, an individual that doubts the accuracy of the Bible or anyone that rejects the Bible or any part of it.

GOD  HAS  GIVEN  MANKING  A  GUIDE  [A  Pattern],                                                                  The  Bible  is  a  book  of  patterns:

THE BEGINNING PATTERN:

  • 66 Books make up the Bible
  • There is an Old Testament and a New Testament
  • There are three primary dispensations:
    • Patriarchal Dispensation – From Adam to the Law of Moses [Ten Commandment Law]
    • The Jewish Dispensation given at Mount Sinai [Horeb], from Law of Moses to the establishment of Christ’s church [Kingdom], Matt 16:18; Mark 9:1; Acts 2:1-47
    • The Christian Dispensation beginning at Acts 2:1-47; 11:15

CONSIDER  THIS:

God gave Adam and Eve a pattern to follow – Gen 2:16-17 - ”16 And Jehovah God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat:

17 but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.“ ASV

God gave Noah a pattern to follow – Gen 6:8-22, ”8 But Noah found favor in the eyes of Jehovah.

9 These are the generations of Noah.  Noah was a righteous man, (and) perfect in his generations: Noah walked with God.

10 And Noah begat three sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

11 And the earth was corrupt before God, and the earth was filled with violence.

12 And God saw the earth, and, behold, it was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted their way upon the earth.

13 And God said unto Noah. The end of all flesh is come before me; for the earth is filled with violence through them; and, behold, I will destroy them with the earth.

14 Make thee an ark of gopher wood; rooms shalt thou make in the ark, and shalt pitch it within and without with pitch.

15 And this is how thou shalt make it: the length of the ark three hundred cubits, the breadth of it fifty cubits, and the height of it thirty cubits.

16 A light shalt thou make to the ark, and to a cubit shalt thou finish it upward; and the door of the ark shalt thou set in the side thereof; with lower, second, and third stories shalt thou make it.

17 And I, behold, I do bring the flood of waters upon this earth, to destroy all flesh, wherein is the breath of life, from under heaven; everything that is in the earth shall die.

18 But I will establish my covenant with thee; and thou shalt come into the ark, thou, and thy sons, and thy wife, and thy sons' wives with thee.

19 And of every living thing of all flesh, two of every sort shalt thou bring into the ark, to keep them alive with thee; they shall be male and female.

20 Of the birds after their kind, and of the cattle after their kind, of every creeping thing of the ground after its kind, two of every sort shall come unto thee, to keep them alive.

21 And take thou unto thee of all food that is eaten, and gather it to thee; and it shall be for food for thee, and for them.

22 Thus did Noah ; according to all that God commanded him, so did he.“ ASV

God gave Moses a pattern to follow –Heb 8:5, ”who serve (that which is) a copy and shadow of the heavenly things, even as Moses is warned (of God) when he is about to make the tabernacle: for, See, saith he, that thou make all things according to the pattern that was showed thee in the mount.“ ASV

Joshua followed the Divine Pattern - Josh 22:28, ”28 Therefore said we, It shall be, when they so say to us or to our generations in time to come, that we shall say, Behold the pattern of the altar of Jehovah, which our fathers made, not for burnt-offering, nor for sacrifice; but it is a witness between us and you. ASV

King Ahaz followed the Divine Pattern - 2 Kings 16:10, ”10 And king Ahaz went to Damascus to meet Tiglath-pileser king of Assyria, and saw the altar that was at Damascus; and king Ahaz sent to Urijah the priest the fashion of the altar, and the pattern of it, according to all the workmanship thereof.“ ASV

David followed the Divine Pattern – 1 Chron 28:11-12, ”11 Then David gave to Solomon his son the pattern of the porch (of the temple), and of the houses thereof, and of the treasuries thereof, and of the upper rooms thereof, and of the inner chambers thereof, and of the place of the mercy-seat; 12 and the pattern of all that he had by the Spirit, for the courts of the house of Jehovah, and for all the chambers round about, for the treasuries of the house of God, and for the treasuries of the dedicated things;“ ASV

God gave a pattern to follow Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego – Daniel 3:1-29

Daniel followed the Divine Pattern – Daniel 6:1-28

God gave Christ a pattern to follow – Matt 11:27, 27 All things have been delivered unto me of my Father : and no one knoweth the Son, save the Father ; neither doth any know the Father , save the Son, and he to whomsoever the Son willeth to reveal (him.).“ Luke 2:49-50, ”49 and he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? knew ye not that I must be in my Father's house?

50 And they understood not the saying which he spake unto them.“ ASV

Heb 5:8-9, ”8 though he was a Son, yet learned obedience by the things which he suffered; 9 and having been made perfect, he became unto all them that obey him the author of eternal salvation;“  ASV

Christ gave his apostles a pattern to follow – John 1:17, For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. ASV

John 8:32, and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.“ ASV

John 16:13, ”Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he shall guide you into all the truth. for he shall not speak from himself; but what things soever he shall hear, (these) shall he speak: and he shall declare unto you the things that are to come.“ ASV

John 17:17, ”Sanctify them in the truth; thy word is truth.“ ASV

Paul Instructed Timothy to follow the pattern - 2 Tim 1:13, Hold the pattern of sound words which thou hast heard from me, in faith and love which is in Christ Jesus.“

Christ gave the church a pattern to follow – Matt 28:18-20, ”18 And Jesus came to them and spake unto them, saying, All authority hath been given unto me in heaven and on earth.

19 Go ye therefore, and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them into the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit:

20 teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I commanded you: and lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world.“ ASV

Composed of members – all have followed the same pattern to become Christians:

They have heard [or have learned] the truth – Rom 10:13-17, 13 for, Whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.

14 How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him whom they have not heard ? and how shall they hear without a preacher?

15 and how shall they preach, except they be sent? even as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that bring glad tidings of good things!

16 But they did not all hearken to the glad tidings. For Isaiah saith, Lord, who hath believed our report?

17 So belief (cometh) of hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ.“ ASV

They have believed the gospel – Mark 16:15-16, ”15 and he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to the whole creation.

16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that disbelieveth shall be condemned.“ ASV

They have repented of sins – Acts 2:37-38, 37 Now when they heard (this,) they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and the rest of the apostles, Brethren, what shall we do?

38 And Peter (said) unto them, Repent ye, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ unto the remission of your sins; and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.“ ASV

They have confessed Christ with the mouth – Rom 10:9-10, 9 because if thou shalt confess with thy mouth Jesus (as) Lord, and shalt believe in thy heart that God raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved:

10 for with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.“ ASV

They have been baptized for remission of sins – Acts 2:38, ”38 And Peter (said) unto them, Repent ye, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ unto the remission of your sins; and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.“ ASV

1 Peter 3:21, ”21 which also after a true likeness doth now save you, (even) baptism, not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the interrogation of a good conscience toward God, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ;“ ASV

NOTE:

The above plan of salvation is a pattern from God revealed to all mankind so that man may be saved from sin – no person will be saved from sin unless this Divine Plan is followed. Everyone that is saved from sin follows the same plan and receives the same results [i.e. ”salvation from sin“].

They have been added to the church by Christ – Acts 2:47, 47 praising God, and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to them day by day those that were saved.“ ASV

Composed of men and women of all nations, all have followed the same pattern –

Matt 28:18-20, ”18 And Jesus came to them and spake unto them, saying, All authority hath been given unto me in heaven and on earth.

19 Go ye therefore, and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them into the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit:

20 teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I commanded you: and lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world.“ ASV

Acts 20:21, ”21 Testifying both to the Jews, and also to the Greeks, repentance toward God, and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ.“ KJV

Rom 3:29, ”29 Or is God (the God) of Jews only? is he not (the God) of Gentiles also? Yea, of Gentiles also:“ ASV

Composed of pattern worship – ”In spirit and in truth“ – John 4:24

Assemble - Heb 10:24-25, 24 and let us consider one another to provoke unto love and good works; 25 not forsaking our own assembling together, as the custom of some is, but exhorting (one another); and so much the more, as ye see the day drawing nigh.“

Pray - 1 Thess 5:17, pray without ceasing;“ ASV

1 Tim 2:8, I desire therefore that the men pray in every place, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and disputing.“ ASV

Acts 12:5, Peter therefore was kept in the prison: but prayer was made earnestly of the church unto God for him.“ ASV

Teach/Preach - Acts 20:7, 7 And upon the first day of the week, when we were gathered together to break bread, Paul discoursed with them, intending to depart on the morrow; and prolonged his speech until midnight. ASV

Lord’s Supper - 1 Cor 11:23-29,

”23 For I received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, that the Lord Jesus in the night in which he was betrayed took bread;

24 and when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, This is my body, which is for you: this do in remembrance of me.

25 In like manner also the cup, after supper, saying, This cup is the new covenant in my blood: this do, as often as ye drink (it), in remembrance of me.

26 For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink the cup, ye proclaim the Lord's death till he come.

27 Wherefore whosoever shall eat the bread or drink the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner, shall be guilty of the body and the blood of the Lord.

28 But let a man prove himself, and so let him eat of the bread, and drink of the cup.

29 For he that eateth and drinketh, eateth and drinketh judgment unto himself, if he discern not the body.“ ASV

Contribution into a common treasure - 1 Cor 16:1-2,

”1 Now concerning the collection for the saints, as I gave order to the churches of Galatia, so also do ye.

2 Upon the first day of the week let each one of you lay by him in store, as he may prosper, that no collections be made when I come.“ ASV

Sing with out mechanical music – Heb 2:12, saying, I will declare thy name unto my brethren, In the midst of the congregation will I sing thy praise.“

1 Cor 14:15, What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also.“ ASV

THE  BIBLE  IS  TO  BE  CORRECTLY  HANDLED:

2 Tim 2:15, ”15 Give diligence to present thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, handling aright the word of truth.“ ASV

THE  BIBLE  IS  GOD’S  INSTRUCTION  BOOK  FOR MANKIND:

There is no reason to go elsewhere for information about God or how to live acceptable to God.

2 Peter 1:3, ”seeing that his divine power hath granted unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that called us by his own glory and virtue;“ ASV

2 Tim 3:16-17, ”Every scripture inspired of God (is) also profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for instruction which is in righteousness.

17 That the man of God may be complete, furnished completely unto every good work.“

WE WALK BY FAITH - 2 Cor 5:6-9, ”6 Being therefore always of good courage, and knowing that, whilst we are at home in the body, we are absent from the Lord

7 (for we walk by faith,  not by sight);

8 we are of good courage, I say, and are willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be at home with the Lord.

9 Wherefore also we make it our aim, whether at home or absent, to be well-pleasing unto him.“ ASV

NOTE:

The ”faith“ in Jude 3 is the system of truth:

Walking by faith means that we live out our lives according to God’s pattern - Jude 3, ”3 Beloved, while I was giving all diligence to write unto you of our common salvation, I was constrained to write unto you exhorting you to contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all delivered unto the saints.“ ASV

THE  BIBLE  IS  THE  PATTERN:

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

CONSIDER  THIS:

The individual, who for whatever reason decides to resist the teaching of the Bible will not become a Christian. The person with a disposition to dispute the teaching of the Bible or any part of it will not come to Christ on His terms, but will be as the Pharisees and Sadducees of Christ day, ”will become a blind leader“ who will attempt to lead others but will lead them only to his/her own philosophy. Whenever one comes to God’s Book there is humble acceptance or stubborn resistance.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Those actions by Christians and those actions performed by the congregation are to be performed according to the Divine Pattern [i.e. the Written Word of God]. Indeed, the Bible is to be correctly interpreted and this action is dependant upon the actions of men with pure and holy motives. The Bible is a Book that is divided into dispensations, these dispensations consist of Patriarchal, the Law of Moses [i.e. the Ten Commandment law given to the Jews], and the Law of Christ [the Christian].

The first step to rightly dividing the Divine Pattern is to understand that mankind lives today under the Law of Christ, the other three dispensations have been taken out of the way. Since the other two dispensations have been completed, the Law of Christ is the Divine Pattern now to be followed by everyone [i.e. both Jews and Gentiles].

The Law of Christ consists of several patterns within God’s Book of instructions for mankind, they are:

Pattern for the salvation of mankind:

Salvation for the individual [i.e. the plan of salvation – a pattern]: Hearing, Believing, Repenting, Confessing Christ as Messiah, being baptized ”for the remission of sins“].

The life of the individual Christian [i.e. manner of life – lifestyle]: ”Faithful to the instructions that God has provided for us in the New Testament [examples: no fornication, no lies, no stealing, etc and, love one another, forgive the sinner who repents, faithful to God in all things, etc.].

Pattern for the church [congregational relationship of the Christian]

Lord’s Day worship [A Biblical Pattern]: Assembled, In Spirit and in truth, Singing, Prayer, Teaching, Lord’s Supper, Giving

SOME  FINAL  REQUESTS  BY  GARRETH

 ABOUT  INTERPRETATION  OF  SCRIPTURE

Since God is perfect, God would not give to man a book that contained error of any kind.

Since the above point is true we may rightly conclude that the Bible has no error in it.

Since we are God’s created beings we will follow God’s written instructions for us even when we do not understand everything about God’s wishes for us.

Whenever we study God’s Written Word, we will always seek to understand it as it has been written.

We will also consider the WRITER,

  • The TIME of writing,
  • To WHOM THE STATEMENT OR SENTENCE IS DIRECTED,
  • Whether the statement is a GENERAL or a SPECIFIC statement
  • We will be honest about the conclusion that we are forced to accept.

We will also understand that expedients are used in interpreting the Bible but we will also understand that any expedient must be authorized by Scripture before it is acceptable.

There are three factors involved in an acceptable interpretation of Scripture they are:

  • A direct command
  • An approved apostolic example
  • A necessary inference

We will also seek to understand FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE and we will not press prophetic language beyond its fulfillment unless the context demands a secondary application.

We will also examine parables and other figures of speech in their proper setting so that we will correctly understand God’s intention for us.  ... glc

                                       A GOOD TEACHER

Good Bible teachers and preachers are needed today probably as much as in any time in past history. There are many teachers/preachers who need to learn all over again how to teach and what it is that really makes a good Bible teacher/preacher.  It must also be apparent to everyone that aspires to teach that a Bible teacher is dealing with a subject that is unchangeable, everlasting, God’s Written Word, absolutely the truth, and no other subject is nearly as important. Paul tells us the value of good teachers in - Romans 10:13-15, ”13 for, Whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.14 How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?15 and how shall they preach, except they be sent? even as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that bring glad tidings of good things! [ASV]

CHARACTER OF THE GOOD BIBLE TEACHER

I.       THE TEACHER NEEDS KNOWLEDGE“

A.        The good teacher needs to know God’s Word – 2 Tim 3:16-17 – ”16 Every scripture inspired of God (is) also profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for instruction which is in righteousness. 17 That the man of God may be complete, furnished completely unto every good work“ [ASV].

B.        The good teacher can know all that is essential by appealing to God’s Written Word regularly.

C.        The good teacher must always handle God’s Word correctly - 2 Tim 2:15, ”15 Give diligence to present thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, handling aright the word of truth“ [ASV].

D.        The good teacher regardless of his age and/or experience will spend time in meditation and study of God’s Word - 1 Tim 4:13, ”Till I come, give heed to reading, to exhortation, to teaching“ [ASV].

II.      THE GOOD TEACHER NEEDS TO BE DEDICATED TO THE TASK:

A.        Paul is a good example - Rom 10:1, ”Brethren, my heart's desire and my supplication to God is for them, that they may be saved“ [ASV].

B.        He ought to be emotionally involved and deeply concerned for the lost and for those he teaches - Rom 9:1-3, ”1 I say the truth in Christ, I lie not, my conscience bearing witness with me in the Holy Spirit, 2 that I have great sorrow and unceasing pain in my heart. 3 For I could wish that I myself were anathema from Christ for my brethren's sake, my kinsmen according to the flesh“ [ASV].

III.    THE GOOD TEACHER NEEDS COURAGE:

A.                He needs to know that trials, tribulations, and persecutions will come upon him from time to time.

1.         The Old Testament prophets were abused and persecuted -

Matthew 5:11-12, 11 Blessed are ye when (men) shall reproach you, and persecute you, and say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. 12 Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets that were before you“ [ASV].

2.         Christ, our perfect example was persecuted - John 15:18-20, ”18 If the world hateth you, ye know that it hath hated me before (it hated) you. 19 If ye were of the world, the world would love its own: but because ye are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you. 20 Remember the word that I said unto you, A servant is not greater than his lord. If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you; if they kept my word, they will keep yours also“

3.         The apostles of Christ were persecuted, too.

4.         Indeed, the good teacher needs courage.

CONSIDER THIS:

Everyone that becomes a teacher/preacher of the Bible will continually be examined by their students. In the course of the good teacher’s life it often becomes necessary to teach on subjects that are unpopular, yet the subject must be taught. Whenever the good teacher teaches the Bible on unpopular subjects to a biased audience he may be persecuted by the very ones that need the teaching. Regardless of the circumstance the good teacher will always teach the truth [cf. Jude 3 – ”… earnestly contend …].

IV.    THE GOOD TEACHER NEEDS PATIENCE:

The word ”patience“ usually means ”steadfastness“ in the New Testament. While the teacher must have this type of patience, he must also have the kind we generally think of in contemporary society: that is; the ability to calmly endure. Perhaps longsuffering would be the correct idea here. While Timothy was instructed to ”… preach the word … being instant in season and out of season … reproving, rebuking, and exhorting“, he was also told to do it …“ with longsuffering.“ [2 Timothy 4:2]. He was to be patient with the students, whether aliens, backsliders, or his students in any setting.

V.      THE GOOD TEACHER NEEDS TO COMMUNICATE:

A.        The teacher needs to recognize that his function is to present the truth from God’s Word to his audience in language, gestures, and illustrations that they can understand.

B.         The attitude of the apostle Paul ought to be imitated by every good Bible teacher, note:

1 Corinthians 2:1-5, ”1 And I, brethren, when I came unto you, came not with excellency of speech or of wisdom, proclaiming to you the testimony of God. 2 For I determined not to know anything among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified. 3 And I was with you in weakness, and in fear, and in much trembling. 4 And my speech and my preaching were not in persuasive words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power: 5 that your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God“ [ASV].             … Monday, August 30, 2005   --- glclair@aol.com

CONVERTING  THE  LOST

Garreth  L.  Clair

The great undertaking for Christians today is the conversion of the lost. We live in a time of great upheaval, a time of moral and ethical decline on almost every hand and in almost all areas of human interaction. Because of these factors and other problems in our present day society [e.g. the rapid and steady increase in divorce, the attempts by homosexuals to gain political clout to be used to gain rights of marriage between two males and/or two females], attempts to pacify terrorism by many liberal politicians, the increase of crime generally in all of our cities, and etc.]. The actions of society in general are being influenced primarily by the electronic and printed media. Indeed, today you can hardly find a movie, a TV program, a magazine, or newspaper that is not outright promoting hedonistic ideals and promoting the godless life of those that seek to eliminate God and any reference to godly things from all society. The me generation has finally arrived, this group of people does not want anything but gratification of selfish pleasures regardless of the rights and privileges that others also desire. Where is the hope for this people today, where is a cure for this people who seem bent upon self destruction? Actually there is no hope for this people in the worldly pursuits that give them a temporary bit of pleasure only to find when they awake on the morrow, their joy and their body has suffered for the temporary pleasure that they so ardently sought.

1.      IS THERE HOPE FOR THESE LOST SOULS TODAY?

2.      CAN THEIR UNDISCIPLINED PURSUITS BE CURTAILED BY ANY EARTHLY POWER?

3.      IS THERE ANY EARTHLY  INSTITUTION  THAT  CAN ALTER  THEIR  PURSUTS  AND  SET  THEM  ON  A  MORE CONSTRUCTIVE  COURSE?

There is an answer to these questions for anyone who seriously seeks for peace, wholesomeness, honor, the good of others, and generally desire a new life without the miserable mind and body destruction that hedonism offers as a prize.

The answer for these people lies not in any earthly concept or philosophy, not in any earthly institution, nor irrational mind altering drugs or relationships. The answer lies in the Written Word of God [i.e. the Bible]. These people that are lost souls need to commit their lives into the hands of the Living God, ”Jesus Christ.“ This is the only cure for misery, for unhappiness, distress, and all the other plagues that sin and undisciplined living bring into a person’s life. Will you pass this information on to someone you know that needs to change their life before it is too late?

The Bible is a wonderful guide for the person who has the desire to bring themselves under control, with God’s help a person can have a new beginning that will give them confidence, peace of mind, and a new and sober view of their responsibilities and future hopes. Please note the following Scriptural references that teach this ideal existence:

Psalms 33:18-22,

18 Behold, the eye of Jehovah is upon them that fear him, upon them that hope in his loving kindness;

19 To deliver their soul from death, and to keep them alive in famine.

20 Our soul hath waited for Jehovah: He is our help and our shield.

21 For our heart shall rejoice in him, because we have trusted in his holy name.

22 Let thy loving kindness, O Jehovah, be upon us, according as we have hoped in thee.

Psalms 78:6-8,

6 That the generation to come might know (them), even the children that should be born; who should arise and tell (them) to their children,

7 That they might set their hope in God, and not forget the works of God, but keep his commandments,

8 And might not be as their fathers, a stubborn and rebellious generation, a generation that set not their heart aright, and whose spirit was not steadfast with God.“ ASV

Proverbs 10:28,

28 The hope of the righteous (shall be) gladness; But the expectation of the wicked shall perish.“ ASV

Romans 8:22-25,

22 For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now. 23 And not only so, but ourselves also, who have the first-fruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for (our) adoption, (to wit), the redemption of our body.

24 For in hope were we saved: but hope that is seen is not hope: for who hopeth for that which he seeth?

25 But if we hope for that which we see not, (then) do we with patience wait for it.“ ASV

Hebrews 5:8-9,

8 though he was a Son, yet learned obedience by the things which he suffered;

9 and having been made perfect, he became unto all them that obey him the author of eternal salvation;

DEVOUT  CHRISTIANS

TEXT:

Colossians 1:4-11,

”4 having heard of your faith in Christ Jesus, and of the love which ye have toward all the saints,

5 because of the hope which is laid up for you in the heavens, whereof ye heard before in the word of the truth of the gospel,

INTRODUCTION:

Today in our society we are encouraged to be easy going, be charitable toward every action of other people, do not make any waves, be compromising, never be abrasive, and etc. We do not agree with this concept for the true Christian as a matter of living life for God. I do not agree with a concept of ”truth“ that would hinder us in our proclamation of the gospel to everyone, anywhere, or at any time. It is my honest conviction that God would have all His children – to be ”DEVOUT“ in all interaction with everyone that they meet regarding the ”truth“ that emanates from God’s Written Word (i.e. the Bible). Therefore, I present some of the qualities of ”Devout Christians“ in the following list:

BODY:

  • Are a people of prayer, 1 Thess 5:16-17
  • Are good Bible students, 2 Timothy 2:15
  • Live as new creatures in the world, 2 Cor 5:17
  • Are devoted personnel workers, James 5:19-20
  • Are faithful in attendance, Hebrews 10:24-25
  • Have strong convictions, Jude 3; John 8:32
  • Do not shirk responsibility, 1 Cur 3:7-11
  • Will aid the sick and afflicted, James 1:27; Gal 6:10
  • Will keep themselves unspotted from the world, James 1:27
  • Will remain faithful (i.e. ”DEVOUT“) until death, Rev 2:10; 2 Tim 4:6-8

CONCLUSION:

”DEVOUT CHRISTIANS“ are surely needed in every congregation today. Whenever Christians stand up for what is right, people will notice their actions. The world will not always agree with the Christian lifestyle and conduct but they will surely know that Christians are different than those in the world.

INDEED, DEVOUT CHRISTIANS ARE NEEDED IN ALL PLACES!

The Role of the Preacher in the Lord's Church - By A. Kay Gardner

The church of Christ seeks to restore the New Testament church. It is committed to following the biblical pattern in all things: doctrine, worship, work, organization, zeal and life. Its faithful preachers fill the God-ordained role of public proclaimers of the gospel. They heed the principles stated here.

PREACH THE GOSPEL

"Preach the word" (2 Timothy 4:2). The gospel must be preached! It is God's power to save sinners and the world's hope. It is spiritual light that scatters darkness; divine power that breaks down bulwarks of sin. Since Christ built his church there has been perpetual need for men, faithful and able, to declare the whole counsel of God (Acts 20:27). This urgent need exists now; it always will.

Early Christians, evangelists and inspired apostles set the example. They were absorbed with an overwhelming passion to carry the message of a glorified Lord to their perishing fellow-men. With a crucified and risen Savior as the heart of the message, they preached it with amazing conviction and strong affection for the cross. (1 Corinthians 2:2).

The church goes the way the pulpit goes. Soft, compromising preaching produces weak, wavering congregations. Every generation needs to hear the "Old Jerusalem" gospel. When blood-atonement is eliminated the pulpit is powerless; the pew is impoverished. The pulpit will be despised in an age when gospel truth is no longer honored.

PASTORS ARE SHEPHERDS--EVANGELISTS ARE PREACHERS

According to the Bible, pastors (elders) are to pastor (shepherd) the flock (Acts 20:28). Preachers (evangelists) are to preach (2 Tim. 4:1-4). Preachers who preach and pastors who pastor is the right way; it is God's divine plan. Preachers are to labor in the word, preaching, teaching, exhorting (Colossians 1:24-29; 2 Tim. 4:1-5).

Elevating the "Reverend Pastor" to a level above the "average" member in the Lord's body is a result of superficial thinking. Men who preach may be placed on a lofty pedestal by those whose minds are clouded, and conclusions are conditioned by a denominational thought-pattern. In God's sight the greatest person is the most faithful servant; not one who has assumed an elevated position. Seemingly it is a basic paradox of Christianity that the way up is down (Matthew 20:25-28). One does not earn a high place before God by appropriating an impressive religious title.

RELIGIOUS TITLES NOT SCRIPTURAL

Distinctive dress and high-sounding titles feed clerical vanity that mocks the spirit of Christianity. Scribes and Pharisees delighted in pompous designations. These reflect an arrogant attitude displeasing to the Master. A full-grown "clergy-laity complex," entrenched in denominational thought and practice, is foreign to New Testament teaching.

The words of Jesus are authoritative and final. "Be not ye called Rabbi. . . call no man your father on the earth. . . neither be ye called masters" (Matt. 23:8-10). Here the Lord laid down the principle that condemns the wearing of ALL religious titles whether they be Reverend, Rabbi, Master, Father, Pope, Cardinal, Archbishop, Pastor, etc.

PREACH THE WORD

Assuming religious titles corrupt the religion that is pure and undefiled even as false teachers are a disgrace to Christ and a hindrance to his church (Acts 20:29-30). Their "mouths must be stopped" (Titus 1:11). Paul warns against teaching traditions of men and vain philosophy (Colossians 2:8). When the whole counsel of God is preached, believed and obeyed, all spiritual needs are satisfied (James 1:21; 2 Tim. 3:16-17). All that men need to believe, be, know, do or teach to please God is written in the Bible. God provides the effective tool; his eternal word. It is mighty, living, powerful and will accomplish its purpose (Eph. 6:17; Heb. 4:12; Isaiah 55:11). when hearers obey God's word a glorious three-fold result follows: (1) aliens are converted to Christ, (2) the wayward are restored, (3) the saved stay saved if they continue firm and steadfast unto the end (1 Cor. 15:58).

Preachers carry a heavy burden in a sin-sick world. They lead the fight against sin by calling Christians to take up the whole armor of God; fight the devil; withstand his wiles and quench his fiery darts (Eph. 6:10-18). In the Lord’s church, conscientious preachers refuse to join the search for something new and different, nor do they make a blundering reach for "relevancy." They are not ashamed of centuries old fundamentalism. Knowing that the doctrine of redemption in Christ will always be relevant, they preach the Old Jerusalem gospel and exhort sinners to obey it; to become servants of God; saved, with sins forgiven and souls set free (Rom. 6:17-18). They do not neglect duty while sinners perish in darkness. Their preaching promotes unity, truth and righteousness while opposing division, error and sin (Proverbs 14:34; John 8:32; 1 Cor. 1:10-13). They warn of the fatal danger in being ashamed of Christ and his words for by them we will be judged (Mark 8:38; John 12:48). They teach that we are saved by grace through faith; not by grace alone nor faith alone but by God's grace and man's obedient faith (Eph. 2:8-10; Rom. 1:5; Gal. 5:6).

They do not try to galvanize sin into respectability, nor do they "soft-pedal" sin by shading terminology. They call transgression of God's law sin, not "deviant behavior" (1 John 3:4; James 4:17). They are careful to distinguish between matters of faith and matters of opinion, then deal with each for what it is.

PREACH THE GOSPEL--HOW?

Faithful evangelists preach the gospel in this manner:

Fully - "From Jerusalem and round about. . . I have fully preached the gospel of Christ" (Rom. 15:19). A man who will not preach the gospel fully should not preach at all.

Forcefully - Paul "powerfully confuted the Jews, and that publicly, showing by the scriptures that Jesus was the Christ" (Acts 18:28).         "I am set for the defense of the gospel" (Phi 1:16).

See you next month, Lord willing!

PREACHING  THAT  GLORIFIES  CHRIST

EDITORIAL: Garreth L. Clair

In recent years it has come to my attention that we do not preach enough sermons that glorify Christ.  My preaching has been for the most part through the years centered on obedience to the commands of Christ rather than on the person of Christ.  I have always acknowledged that my preaching ought to be both positive and negative, that preaching ought to contain warnings and encouragement to the audience, that both doctrine and teaching are one and the same, that the Word of God is our rule of right, etc., often in recent years I have wondered if my teaching has been sufficiently inclusive of elements that glorify Christ - I pray it has been.  The material that I plan to present in this issue of "CONSIDER MAGAZINE" will be devoted to glorifying Christ.

The material in this issue of the magazine reflects my present course of sermon preparation and my attitude toward glorifying Jesus Christ from the pulpit as I am privileged.

Included in these studies will be specific uses of sermons that I have preached throughout the years of my ministry. - rearranged to emphasize and glorify Christ.  Each sermon has been utilized in such a manner that Christ is the central theme of the lesson presentation.  The list of recent sermons presented with Christ as the central theme is:

1.       THE PRODIGAL SON: Luke 15:11-24

11        And he said, a certain man had two sons:

12        And the younger of them said to his father, Father, give me the portion of goods that falleth to me. And he divided unto them his living.

13        And not many days after the younger son gathered all together, and took his journey into a far country, and there wasted his substance with riotous living.

14        And when he had spent all, there arose a mighty famine in that land; and he began to be in want.

15        And he went and joined himself to a citizen of that country; and he sent him into his fields to feed swine.

16        And he would fain have filled his belly with the husks that the swine did eat: and no man gave unto him.

17        And when he came to himself, he said, How many hired servants of my

father's have bread enough and to spare, and I perish with hunger!

18        I will arise and go to my father, and will say unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and before thee,

19        And am no more worthy to be called thy son: make me as one of thy hired servants.

20        And he arose, and came to his father. But when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and had compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him.

21        And the son said unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and in thy sight, and am no more worthy to be called thy son.

22        But the father said to his servants, Bring forth the best robe, and put it on him; and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet:

23        And bring hither the fatted calf, and kill it; and let us eat, and be merry:

24        For this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found. And they began to be merry. (KJV)

This study is presented as a basis for establishing the long-suffering of Christ. (i.e., The Godhead, including Christ, is long-suffering toward their erring children - "... not willing that any perish, but that all might come to repent and return.)  Included in this parable of Jesus is encouragement for the erring child, whatever the offense, to return to Him and be welcomed back with gladness by the Lord.

"THE SINNER IS ALWAYS WELCOME HOME."

"COME HOME!  ERRING CHILDREN."

3.     THE POWER OF EXAMPLE:

Matthew 16:24,

24        Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.

John 13:15,

15        For I have given you an example that ye should do as I have done to you.

This lesson is utilized to establish the importance of following the example that Jesus Christ set for us when He sojourned here on earth for approximately 33 years, Christ left us an example of goodness that we will never be able to equal. The perfectly good example that Jesus left for us to follow is surely the kind of example for all Christians to incorporate into their lifestyle.

In our life as a Christian we will, ourselves, be an example for

others to follow. In our lives, lived before others we will encourage them to be either righteous or unrighteous by our actions and deeds.  Christians ought to follow Christ's example, because there is no better example in the annals of history, either secular or spiritual. To follow an example other than that lived by Christ and recorded in the Bible will encourage wickedness. Many young people today and perhaps more middle age and older people than I am aware of are allowing sport's figures or Hollywood types to influence them in the kind of life that they are living. No non-Christian should ever be our example and we should never encourage our children or grand-children to live lives like these non-Christians are living. "CHRIST" is the only hero, the only personage, the one that we should strive to be like and encourage others to be like HIM also.

”FOLLOW CHRIST'S EXAMPLE IN ALL THINGS."

4.     THE UNCHANGEABLE LORD:

Hebrews 13:8,

8          Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.

Psalms 102:27,

”But thou art the same, and thy years shall have no end.“ (KJV)

This lesson encourages confidence in the Christian's hope.  The Lord is unchanging; therefore all of His promises and all of His statements recorded in the Holy Scripture are true.   Whatever the Lord has promised He is able to do - my confidence in His ability to raise me from the dead, someday, is secure. Since Christ's promises are true I am encouraged to seek them even with a greater desire and expectation of receiving them personally when He comes again.

"CHRIST'S PROMISES ARE UNCHANGEABLE;

I CAN REST ASSURED THAT CHRIST WILL FULFILL HIS COMMITMENT TO ME."

"CHRIST WILL SAVE ME I KNOW."

4.       CHRIST'S SEVEN LAST UTTERANCES FROM THE CROSS:

            A.        Luke 23:34,

34        Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots.

"FORGIVENESS FOR HIS MURDERERS."

            B.        Luke 23:43,

43        And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise.

"GRANTS PEACE TO A CRUCIFIED CRIMINAL."

            C.        John 19:27,

27        Then saith he to the disciple, Behold thy mother! And

from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home.

"SHOWS A SON'S LOVE AND CONCERN FOR HIS MOTHER."

            D.        Matt 27:46,

46        And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?

"INDICATES THAT HE FEELS ABANDONED BY HIS FATHER

(i.e., a human emotion) BUT CONTINUES TO OBEY HIM."

            E.         John 19:28,

28        After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst.

 (KJV, reference)

"SHOWS HIS SUFFERING, YET CONTINUES TO OBEY HIS FATHER."

            F.         John 19:30,

30        When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.

"ALL THINGS THAT HE CAME TO EARTH TO ACCOMPLISH IS COMPLETE."

            G.        Luke 23:46,

46        And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, he said, Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit: and having said thus, he gave up the ghost. (KJV)

"HE KNOWS WHERE HE IS GOING,

BACK TO THE GLORY HE POSSESSED BEFORE THE WORLD BEGAN (cf.John 17:5)."

5.     THE LORD'S SUPPER:

Matthew 26:26-28,

26        And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed it, and brake it, and gave it to the disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is my body.

27        And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of it;

28        For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.

Mark 14:22-25,

22        And as they did eat, Jesus took bread, and blessed, and brake it, and gave to them, and said, Take, eat: this is my body.

23        And he took the cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them: and they all drank of it.

24        And he said unto them, this is my blood of the New Testament, which is shed for many.

25        Verily I say unto you, I will drink no more of the fruit of the vine, until that day that I drink it new in the kingdom of God.

1 Corinthians 10:16,

16        The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ?

1 Corinthians 11:23-34,

23        For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, that the Lord Jesus the same night in which he was betrayed took bread:

24        And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me.

25        After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me.

26        For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do show the Lord's death till he come.

27        Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord, unworthy, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord.

28        But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup.

29        For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord's body.

30        For this cause many are weak and sickly among you, and many sleep.

31        For if we would judge ourselves, we should not be judged.

32        But when we are judged, we are chastened of the Lord, that we should not be condemned with the world.

33        Wherefore, my brethren, when ye come together to eat, tarry one for another.

34        And if any man hunger, let him eat at home; that ye come not together unto condemnation. And the rest will I set in order when I come.

The four New Testament references above establish the pattern for the Lord's Supper. The Divine pattern is Christ centered for it is He that established it (cf. Matthew 6:26 and Mark 14:22) for a continuous memorial of His death till He returns again (cf. 1 Corinthians 11:23-26).

The Lord's Supper is to be taken each first day of the week (cf. Acts 20:7), it is to be entered into with thought and consideration recognizing that the Lord's Supper is a memorial to Christ's death.

"THE LORD'S SUPPER IS A CONTINUOUS MEMORIAL TO THE CHRISTIAN,

ABOUT CHRIST'S DEATH, BURIAL AND RESURRECTION"

6.       WHAT SHALL I DO WITH JESUS?

Matthew 27:22; "Pilate saith unto them, What shall I do then with Jesus which is called Christ? They all say unto him, Let him be crucified."

Nearly twenty Centuries ago Pilate uttered the question, ”what shall I do with Jesus..?."  men and women of accountable age have had to answer the same question in their life ever sine.  How have you personally responded to the question that is the most important that will ever occur in your lifetime? ”..What shall I do with Jesus...?“  In this phase of our study let us examine some of the ramifications of this question.

A.        The question is a personal question, a question that each person will have to answer for themselves. I have often desired the ability to answer the question for some in my own family but I know that I cannot, they must answer the question just as I have answered it in my life. Jesus has stated it very clearly, "...he that is not with me is against me..."  cf., Matt 12:30.

B.        How shall I react to his offer of salvation from sin?

Matthew 11:28-30;

28        Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

29        Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.

30        For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

Revelation 3:20,

20        Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me. (KJV)

C.        How shall I react to his promise of an eternal paradise?

 John 14:1-6;

1          Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me.

2          In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.

3          And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.

4          And whither I go ye know, and the way ye know.

5          Thomas saith unto him, Lord, we know not whither thou goest; and how can we know the way?

6          Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

What will you do with Jesus, His offer of salvation from sin, and His offer of an eternal paradise?  What will your reaction to these things be?  Will you not come to Jesus Christ on His terms, believing and obeying His instruction so that your sins will be forgiven, today.

7.       THE WONDERFUL SAVIOR:

In the Book of Isaiah 9:5 we read, in reference to the Christ, "His name shall be called wonderful…Have you ever considered the possible meanings that can be attributed to that word as it is applied to Jesus Christ?  In this phase of the study let us consider this word, "WONDERFUL", as it applies to Christ.

A.        He is wonderful in offering Himself for my sins,

            Hebrews 10:10-12

B.        He is wonderful in His perfect obedience,

            Hebrews 5:8, 9

C.        He is wonderful in His love for me,

            John 15:13; Romans 5:6-8

D.        He is wonderful in His nature – GOD,

            Colossians 2:9

E.         He is wonderful in His work,

            Matthew 8:2; 8:5-13; 8:14, 15; 9:2;

            Matthew 8:28-24, etc.

F.         He is wonderful in His example,

            1 Peter 2:21, 22

G.        He is wonderful in His triumph over Satan,

            1 Corinthians 15:20-23

Perhaps we could extend this list much further but these few points show us that we do, truly have a wonderful savior.

SERVING CHRIST DAY BY DAY:

As Christians we are to serve Christ continually. How may we serve Him day after day?  This is the study for this seventh point.

A.        We may serve Christ by teaching the gospel to everyone that we meet whether we are a preacher, elder, deacon, or a member with only the title, Christian.

cf., 1 Timothy 3:2,

2          A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behavior, given to hospitality, apt to teach;

1 Timothy 4:10-11,

10        For therefore we both labor and suffer reproach, because we trust in the living God, who is the Savior of all men, specially of those that

believe.

11        These things command and teach.

2 Timothy 2:2,

2          And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.

2 Timothy 2:24,

24        And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient,

Titus 2:4,

4          That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children,

B.        We may serve Christ day by day through living a faithful and honorable life before everyone.  Christ admonishes His disciples to be "the salt of the earth and the light of the world..."cf., Matthew 5:13-16,

13 Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost its savor, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out and trodden under foot of men.

14 Ye are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hid.

15 Neither do (men) light a lamp, and put it under the bushel, but on the stand; and it shineth unto all that are in the house.

16 Even so let your light shine before men; that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven. ASV
