2. The Love of God is exemplified in Christians by obedience – John 14:15; 14:24

3. God wants Christians to teach others – 2 Timothy 2:2

4. God wants Christians to worship Him – John 4:23-24

5. God wants Christians to give – 1 Corinthians 16:1-2

6. God wants Christians to Grow – 2 Peter 3:18

7. God wants Christians to love each other – 1 John 4:20-21

8. God wants Christians to care for needy Christians – Galatians 6:10; James 1:27

9. God wants all Christians to assemble regularly – Hebrews 10:24-25; Col 1:9-14

10. God wants all Christians to let their light shine - Matt 5:14-16 ”14 Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hid. 15 Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.

16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father

which is in heaven.“ (KJV)

There are many things that God does for the faithful Christian each day; some of them are listed above. Even though we do not consider the invisible things that God does for us continually there are man such events in our lives. Some of the unseen and unnoticed events by many people are:

1.         God gives us breath.

2.         God causes our heart to continue beating every day.

3.         God allows us to shed tears from our eyes at times of sadness.

4.         God gives us the ability to see near and far with our eyes.

5.         God allows us to close our eyes at

night and at other times and sleep.

6.         God gives us understanding of basic things in life as we grow from infant

child to full grown and developed adult.

7.         God provides us with a perfect spiritual guide through life (i.e. the Bible);

Jeremiah 10:23, ”O LORD, I know that the way

of man is not in himself: it is not in man that walketh to direct his steps.“

And so much more:

Psalms 119:73-77, ”73 Thy hands have made me and fashioned me: give me understanding, that I may learn thy commandments. 74 They that fear thee will be glad when they see me; because I have hoped in thy word. 75 I know, O LORD, that thy judgments are right, and that thou in faithfulness hast afflicted me. 76 Let, I pray thee, thy merciful kindness be for my comfort, according to thy word unto thy servant. 77 Let thy tender mercies come unto me, that I may live: for thy law is my delight.“ (KJV) -- glclair@aol.com – 12-13-08

Things to Consider

That Relate to the Assembly

1. Have I considered how to stir up my fellow Christians to love and good works (Heb. 10:24)?

2. Will I listen to the announcements? Will I strive to participate in various activities? Will I pray for those needing prayer (James 5:14-16)?

3. Will I sing so as to speak to my fellow Christians in psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs to build up their faith (Ephesians 5:19, Colossians 3:16)?

4. Will I actively participate in the

congregational prayers and confirm my agreement with "Amen" (1 Corinthians 14:14-16)?

5. Will I remember the Lord's death in the Lord's Supper (1 Corinthians 11:23-28)?

6. Will I pay attention to the lesson, test to see what things are so, and be willing to apply the message to myself first and strive to be a better servant of God (Acts 17:11, 2 Corinthians 13:5)?

7. Have I prepared to give as God has blessed me (2 Corinthians 8:8-15)?

8. I will plan to give of my money into the treasury as I have been prospered (1 Cor 16:2, Upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by him in store, as God hath prospered him, that there be no gatherings when I come.

9. I will speak to the visitors welcoming them to the assembly

10. Will I be a kind and considerate friend to my brethren in the church as I am taught to be?

DIVINE ENCOURAGEMENT TO GROW

The methods to attain growth are revealed in the Scriptures through several different phrases.

2 Peter 3:18, But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.

Some of them will be our study today …

Work --------------------

Heb 6:10, ”For God is not unrighteous to forget your work and labor of love, which ye have showed toward his name, in that ye have ministered to the saints, and do minister.“

Phil 2:12, ”Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.“

Grow --------------------

1 Peter 2:2, ”As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:“ (KJV)

2 Peter 3:18, But grow in grace, and in the

knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.“

Add --------------------

2 Peter 1:5-10,

”5 And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge;

6 And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness;

7 And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity.

8 For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

9 But he that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins.

10 Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall:“ (KJV)

UNBELIVERS – AGNOSTICS – ATHEISTS

INTRODUCTION:

The problems that face personal workers, elders, Bible teachers, and preachers that work from house to house seeking to convert the lost consist of many obstacles [i.e. hindrances]. In this article I want to show some of the excuses that I have received from prospects while attempting to teach them the right path to salvation from sin. During my 50 years of teaching the Divine message to the lost, the following statements have been uttered by one or more of the people that I have attempted to teach. Indeed, these excuses [i.e. listed below], and others are often entrenched in the mind of those with which we seek to convert to the Way of the Lord.

REMEMBER THIS:

Regardless of the nature of excuses, we are required to seek out and attempt to teach the lost ones as opportunities are presented – We also need to understand that the Lord encourages us to take a militant stance toward doing evangelism, even to the point of  going out into the secular world and seeking converts, seeking all!

Luke 14:17-23, ”17 And sent his servant at supper time to say to them that were bidden, Come; for all things are now ready.

18 And they all with one consent began to make excuse. The first said unto him, I have bought a piece of ground, and I must needs go and see it: I pray thee have me excused.

19 And another said, I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I go to prove them: I pray thee have me excused.

20 And another said, I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come.

21 So that servant came, and showed his lord these things. Then the master of the house being angry said to his servant, Go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in hither the poor, and the maimed, and the halt, and the blind.

22 And the servant said, Lord, it is done as thou hast commanded, and yet there is room.

23 And the lord said unto the servant, Go out into

the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled.“ KJV

THE BIBLE CANNOT BE TRUE

2 Tim 3:16-17, ”16 Every scripture inspired of God (is) also profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for instruction which is in righteousness. 17 That the man of God may be complete, furnished completely unto every good work.“ ASV

MY PARENTS WERE SINCERE AND HONEST

CORNELIUS: Acts 10:1-5, ”1 Now (there was) a certain man in Caesarea, Cornelius by name, a centurion of the band called the Italian (band), 2 a devout man, and one that feared God with all his house, who gave much alms to the people, and prayed to God always.

3 He saw in a vision openly, as it were about the ninth hour of the day, an angel of God coming in unto him, and saying to him, Cornelius. 4 And he, fastening his eyes upon him, and being affrighted, said, What is it, Lord? And he said unto him, Thy prayers and thine alms are gone up for a memorial before God. 5 And now send men to Joppa, and fetch one Simon, who is surnamed Peter:“ ASV

YOUR CHURCH IS TOO NARROW MINDED

2 Tim 4:1-4, ”I charge (thee) in the sight of God, and of Christ Jesus, who shall judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and his kingdom: 2 preach the word; be urgent in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching. 3 For the time will come when they will not endure the sound doctrine; but, having itching ears, will heap to themselves teachers after their own lusts; 4 and will turn away their ears from the truth, and turn aside unto fables.“ ASV

DISCOURAGED - UNHAPPY

The current state of the economy, the war in Iraq and in Afghanistan, the Automobile Industry’s woes, and other problems are having an effect on the disposition of many Christians today. There are some who are so affected by these matters that they are becoming discouraged about the congregation where they attend worship; thinking surely there must be something wrong with the church because everything else is such a mess.

Discouragement is the first step that may lead a person to depression; depression is a terrible state for anyone including the Christian. Whenever one is suffering from depression many surmising arise in the mind along with a number of other unhappy inclinations such as:

1. Sadness through the day – almost every day.

2. Loss of interest in enjoying normal activities.

3. Feelings of worthlessness.

4. Excessive or inappropriate feelings of guilt.

5. Thoughts of death or suicide.

6. Trouble making decisions.

7. Fatigue or lack of energy.

8. Sleeping too much or too little.

9. Change of appetite or weight.

10. Trouble concentrating

11. Aches and pains

12. Restlessness

THE CHRISTIAN’S HOPE

The Christian’s hope is of such a quality that God lets us know that we can rise above this malady. Please consider the following Biblical references that present a process by which we can deal satisfactorily with depression – glclair@aol.com

Bible Teaching about Depression

The Bible teaching about depression is enormously encouraging. Jeremiah is an excellent example, which can be found in the book of Lamentations. We can find hope and help from the times of our disappointment and discouragement all the way to despair and depression. Here is how.

Example of Jeremiah

Jeremiah is even sometimes called the, ”weeping prophet.“ The background of this book is the fall and brutal destruction of Jerusalem at the bloody hands of the Babylonians in 586/5 B.C. Times were dreadful. Famine and the sword consumed the fallen city. The book is filled with sorrow, melancholy, and mourning as Jeremiah sat on a hill, weeping over the devastation of his beloved city. If anyone had cause for depression, he did.

This is seen in Jeremiah’s words, which vividly illustrate the conditions of depression.

Jeremiah's Mental State

”I have become a laughingstock to all my people, their mocking song all the day. He has filled me with bitterness, He has made me drunk with wormwood. And He has broken my teeth with gravel; He has made me cower in the dust. And my soul has been rejected from peace; I have forgotten happiness. So I say, ‘My strength has perished, and so has my hope from the Lord.’ Remember my affliction and my wandering, and the wormwood and bitterness. Surely my soul remembers and is bowed down within me“ (Lamentations 3:14-20).

As a qualification, there are spiritual, physical and medical causes and cures for depression. There are also degrees of depression, ranging from the blues to despair and suicide. My focus here is on the Bible teaching about the mental causes and cures for depression, and which parallels the thought of a particular psychological theory known as Cognitive Therapy.

The Anatomy of Depression

Cognitive therapist, Aaron Beck, maintains there is a triad of forces that bring on depression. These forces originate in our thinking. They are constant negative thoughts about our person, our situation, and the future. They lead to the symptoms of feeling defeated, defective, deserted, and deprived. These factors exactly describe Jeremiah, don’t you think? This analysis fits the Bible teaching about depression. Let me break it down for you below.

•Feelings of defeat: ”broken teeth, cowering in the dust, etc.“

•Feelings of defectiveness: ”laughingstock of all my people, filled with bitterness, etc.“

•Feelings of desertedness: God had made him, ”drunk, bitter, broken his teeth,“ and rejected from peace, etc.“

•Feelings of deprivation: he was deprived of hope. Now you can begin to see how depression works in our mind. But, let me show you the triad of negative thoughts.  •His person: he was mocked, bitter, bowed down within, and the unworthy object of

God’s wrath (cf. verses 1ff.).

•His present situation: in his mind it was horrible, devoid of peace and happiness.

•His future: Jeremiah’s hope had perished. It was gone. He was in despair.

In sum, Jeremiah’s interpretation of the very ugly scene before him had driven him to a dark, deep dungeon of depression in his mind. That is why he said, ”my soul remembers and is bowed down.“ Remembering is a function of our mind.

When we hear words like ”I am a dirty rotten no good louse, my situation is horrible, terrible, awful, I can’t stand it, and there is no hope for my future,“ then depression has dug in deep. I am not talking about fleeting flights of thinking, but engrained, habitual patterns of viewing the world.

Jeremiah's Solution

The great news in the Bible teaching about depression is that there is hope for you and me. There is a different way of viewing calamity and/or the problems that sometimes consume us. There is a way out of the dungeon of depression. Here is how Jeremiah did it.

In verse 22, which follows Jeremiah’s thinking pattern of depression, we find out how he dug his way out of the black hole of depression. It is exciting! He said, ”This I recall to my mind, therefore I have hope“ (Lamentations 3:21). There you have it! The key! He changed his thinking, and his way of looking at his circumstances! Hope returned! What, then, did Jeremiah start thinking about?

God's Goodness, Wisdom and Power

He reminded himself of God’s loving-

kindness, compassions, faithfulness, goodness, and delivering power (Lamentations 3:22-26). He also said this, ”Who is there who speaks and it comes to pass, unless the Lord has commanded it?“ (Lamentations 3:37).

In other words, the Bible teaching about depression instructs that God is in control of life and events of history. It is wrong for us to complain about how God does things (cf. verses 39, 40). When we don’t understand our circumstances, we must leave matters in the hands of God who loves and cares for His people.

As a side bar, by now you have probably recognized that Jeremiah’s words are echoed in the great 1923 Christian hymn by Thomas Chisholm, ”Great is Thy Faithfulness.“

There you have it: the Bible teaching about the cause of depression that arises from a negative mental state, and the solution to those nasty thoughts and feelings. God’s solution is to change your thinking about your situation, and trust Him. Another word for that strategy is - faith.

Where to Go From Here

Depression is sometimes called the ”common cold“ of psychological problems. It is complicated, and can lead to suicide. Consequently, if you suffer from depression, and cannot find relief, I urge you to immediately contact your physician and/or minister.

As another qualification, I do not mean to minimize the pain, nor imply that getting out of depression is as easy as switching a light on. Life can be brutal at times, just as with Jeremiah. It takes specific work and time to change our thinking habits.

For more details on the mechanics of Cognitive Therapy, I highly recommend the popularized version in print, ”Feeling Good: The New Mood Therapy,“ by David Burns.

For more nuts and bolts on how to discover and combat those negative thoughts that swirl around in our skulls, see my essay on managing your thoughts.

There I show a step by step method that will bring great relief for any negative emotions.

All the best to you in your continued study. By Dr. Willis and Esmie Newman

4. What were some things that happen to Job (Job 1:12-19; 2:7-10)?

5. What was the source of calamity that hit Job (Job 2:7)?

6. Summarize how God told Job to handle his circumstances and depression                     (Chapters 38-42)?

7. What were the symptoms of David’s depression (Psalm 32:3, 4)?

8. What was the initiating factor of David’s depression, and how did he deal with it (Psalm 32:5; cf. Psalm 38).

9. What did David suggest to cope with depression (Psalm 32:6-11)?

10. What is suggested to relieve depression in Proverbs 31:6, 7? Note: medicinal use is in view.

11. What stood out to you the most in this study? Explain.

CONSIDER THIS:

The new year of 2009 is before us all; let us pull ourselves together as faithful Children of God and involve self to work at solving our own personal problems – calling upon our God as our helper and solid rock.

There are many good things that we may do so that our time will be filled with good works.

1. Decide to attend some of the gospel meetings that are conducted in driving distance of your home this year.

2. Remember to consider your friends, brothers and sisters in Christ and those you interact with at work or at school – consistently speak a good (i.e. kind) word to them.

3. Pray regularly for yourself and for others that you know of that need prayers.

4. Volunteer to teach a Bible class, the church always needs teachers in the rotation. Contact Gary Brewer or Garreth Clair.

5. Join with others who volunteer to clean the church building and prepare the communion. This is a good and necessary work. Contact Gary Brewer or Garreth Clair

6. Occasionally plan a visit to some of the shut-in. Try to visit all of the shut-in as opportunity is available.

7. Take a active role as a member of the congregation here in Hilliard. There is much work to do during this coming year.

The Chain of Un-grace

When I feel wronged, I can contrive a hundred reasons against forgiveness. ”He needs to learn a lesson.“ ”I’ll let her stew for a while; it’ll do her good.“ ”It’s not up to me to make the first move.“ When I finally soften to the point of granting forgiveness, it seems a leap from hard logic to mushy sentiment.

One factor that motivates me to forgive is that as a Christian I am commanded to, as the child of a Father who forgives. Jesus said, ”If you have anything against anyone, forgive him, that your Father in heaven may also forgive you your trespasses“ (Mark 11:25).

But beyond that, I can identify three pragmatic reasons. First, forgiveness halts the cycle of blame and pain, breaking the chain of un-grace. Without it we remain bound to the people we can’t forgive, held in their vise grip.

Second, forgiveness loosens the stranglehold of guilt in the perpetrator. It allows the possibility of transformation in the guilt party, even if a just punishment is still required.

And third, forgiveness creates a remarkable linkage, placing the forgiver on the same side as the party who did the wrong. We are not as different from the wrongdoer as we would like to think, for we too must ask our heavenly Father, ”Forgive us our debts“ (Matt. 6:12).    … Philip Yancey

He who cannot forgive others burns the bridge over which he himself must pass.

Consider This:

It is a great problem for many people to forgive others. The problem that seems to hold a person back when they know that they have done wrong toward another person is shame, inferior feelings, and loss of pride. The honest, sincere person will overcome these feelings and inclination that reside within themselves and bow to their better judgment and say; ”God forgive me“ and at the same time restore the relationship that they have hurt by doing the same toward the person or persons that they have slandered or hurt in some way.

Even when we are the person that is hurt, we must recognize that God encourages us to forgive our friend, neighbor, or brother for their action against us if they ask us to do so. Many times someone will hurt us in some way and will eventually say something like I should not have said that or I should not have thought that. When they seek forgiveness from us we must forgive them – cf. Luke 17:4

”4 And if he trespass against thee seven times in a day, and seven times in a day turn again to thee, saying, I repent; thou shall forgive him.“ (KJV). This; we can do but if their action against us was a sinful deed on their part our act of forgiving them is good but they must seek forgiveness from God for the sin involved in their actions. Remember this: only God can forgive sins – cf. 1 John 1:9, ”9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness“ (KJV). ... glcair@aol.com – February 1, 2009

LOVE AND RULES

Some seem to have trouble in seeing that "love" and "rules“ are "not opposed" or "contradictory" to each other. I saw this statement on a "church sign" recently: "Rules cannot love you." I am not certain just what the writer of these words had in mind but it seems to reveal the idea, held by man, that "rules" and "ordinances" are some kind of a curse or at least a nuisance in our world today.

Yes, it is true that "rules" cannot love you. An "ordinance" cannot love you. Surely all understand this. The only reason I can see for displaying a statement like this is to "play down" the importance of "rules" or "laws." I know there is an effort being made by many religionists today to minimize the importance of "rules" and "laws" in the matter of our relationship with Christ and the salvation of our souls.

Let me say again, "Yes, it is true that 'rules' cannot love you. but parents who love their children can and do have "rules" for their children to follow. The purpose of such rules is to guide them into a good life while they are children and even on to adulthood. This is God's requirements for parents, "Children, obey your parents in all things: for this is well pleasing unto the Lord" (Col. 3:23). The word ”obeys" means, "to follow the commands or guidance of." This is the exact import of the word translated "obey" in "Col. 3:23. I believe that this is generally accepted by all concerned parents. They must give "rules" and instructions and expect their children to obey. This is done because of love for the welfare of their children. Rules do not love but parents do!

And let it be noted that God has given unto us a "rule"...a "law" (See Gal. 6:2). According to Webster's dictionary, the word "law" means, "a rule of conduct or action prescribed or formally recognized as binding or enforced by a controlling authority." We need to be careful lest we convey the idea that since God loves us there are no rules that we must obey.

It is made very clear in the New Testament that God expects us to obey the "rules"...and "commands." In Heb. 5:8-9 the inspired writer said, "Though He were a Son, yet learned He obedience by the things which He suffered. And being made perfect, He became the Author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey Him;" Many other such passages could be cited. But we shall close with the following quotation? "Law sustains life...law keeps the universe on its course...law assures that orderly process will lead to know results...without law man, nature, life, would be in complete chaos.“Let us in our life give thanks to God for His mercy, grace, love, etc., but may we also never be guilty of anything that which would seem to diminish the importance of the "rules" He has given us. May we have the attitude of David as we read in Ps. 119:97; "O how love I Thy law! It is my meditation all the day." … Cecil F. Cox

STANDING AGAINST THE EVIL ONE

Satan tempts us, and battles to get us to sin. The evil one knows our weaknesses. His attacks against us are spiritual. Paul describes it this way: "For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts in the heavenly places" (Eph. 6:12).

We are encouraged to stand against the evil one. Paul writes, "Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to STAND against the wiles of the devil" and "Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to STAND" again "STAND therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness" (Eph. 6:11,13,14).Paul tells us how we can stand against the evil one. He says, "Put on the whole armor of God...take up the whole armor of God" (Eph. 6:11, 13). He then depicts that armor of God in this way, "Stand therefore, having girded your waist with TRUTH, having put on the breastplate of RIGHTEOUSNESS, and having shod your feet with the preparation of the GOSPEL of PEACE; above all, taking the shield of FAITH with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one. And take the helmet of SALVATION and the sword of the SPIRIT, which is the WORD of GOD; PRAYING always with all PRAYER and SUPPLICATION in the SPIRIT, being WATCHFUL to this end with all PERSEVERANCE and SUPPLICATION for all the saints" (Eph. 6:14-18).Notice the clothing we wear to battle the evil one involves descriptions of God's Will for us. When we couple that with the Holy Spirit and our effort with prayer, we can stand against the evil one. May God bless us to stand!   …  Ron Drumm

--- PERSONAL EVANGELISM ---

There are many people today who possess a form of religion that is displayed as hostile, argue mental, and simply rude. I know of no occasion where it is requirement of the person who seeks to be involved in personal evangelism to be anything but kind, considerate, and patient with those they seek to turn from the world and toward the love of God, cf. John 3:16, ”For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.“ (KJV)

There are many people today who follow a false religion – there is no denying that fact. This is glaringly revealed via the contradictory teachings that exist between the many religions in America today. I know of no teaching in the Holy Scriptures that suggest that any religion is acceptable to Almighty God regardless of what one believes and practices; cf. Luke 5:21-24, ”21 And the scribes and the Pharisees began to reason, saying, Who is this which speaketh blasphemies? Who can forgive sins, but God alone? 22 But when Jesus perceived their thoughts, he answering said unto them, What reason ye in your hearts? 23 Whether is easier, to say, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Rise up and walk? 24 But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power upon earth to forgive sins,“ (KJV). I do know that the Bible teaches that mankind is acceptable to God when he follows God’s instruction. The very first family (i.e. Adam and Eve) found this to be the case when they partook of the forbidden fruit in the Garden of Eden; cf. Genesis 3:1-24. Adam and Eve disobeyed God’s command and they as well as all humanity have been paying the price (i.e. physical death and all the evils of physical life on earth and also separation for God).

MEETING OBJECTIONS

We were all lost and without hope in the world until Messiah (i.e. Jesus Christ) came into the world and set up the Kingdom of God (i.e. the church of Christ) in the first Century C.E. Indeed, Jesus Christ promised that He would build the church cf. Matt. 16:18, ”And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it“ (KJV). The promise of Christ to build his church took place nearly 2,000 years ago when, according to the New Testament book of Acts in chapter 2, verses 1-47 we have the process by which God brought the church into existence and the record of 3,000 conversions to it. Since this is a fact, we are obligated to go and do personal work with everyone that we meet or know who is not already a Christian as we are a Christian. REMEMBER THIS: there is only one kind of Christian that is a person who complies with the instruction (i.e. follows the Divine Pattern for conversion) contained in the book of Acts.

The pattern revealed for salvation from sin is

1. Hearing (i.e. understanding it) the gospel – Rom. 10:17

2. Believing – Mark 16:15-16

3. Repenting of past sin – Luke 13:3; Acts 2:38

4. Confession with the mouth – Romans 10:9-10; Acts 8:37-38, ”37 And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. 38 And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and they went down both into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him“ (KJV).

5. Being baptized – Acts 2:38; 1 Peter 3:21

AND - Christ then adds the saved person to His Body the Church - cf. Acts 2:47; 1 Cor 12:27 ”Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular“ (KJV)

Your Help is Needed

Each member of the church here is asked to give us your input regarding the Bible classes. We need to get your ideas and suggestions for encouraging greater participation by the membership in our Bible classes for Wednesday night at 7:30 and for Sunday morning at 9:30.

If you have suggestions or ideas that you feel we could implement here at Cemetery Road to strengthen our attendance and participation of those that make up the church here please give us the idea?

The current plans for our Bible study classes at all age levels including the adult classes will be:

1. Using printed lessons and booklets of subjects, biographies, and Bible based materials for students and teachers.

2. Regularly planning to have teacher’s meetings either quarterly or every six months. We need your input for this matter soon so we may schedule a consistent plan to have these meetings.

3. We are also planning gospel meetings for the next three years; a schedule will be complete as soon as possible with potential (i.e. unconfirmed) visiting preachers.

4. As of this date (February 1, 2009) the following meeting schedules are confirmed.

Spring – May 10-15 – Different speakers each day – Sunday-Friday

Fall – October 18-23 – Billy Ford from Marion, Arkansas

We encourage input from the membership here on Cemetery Road but if any of you that receive our online edition of HILLIARD BULLETIN have suggestions about strengthening our attendance at Bible study sessions; please contact us with your helpful suggestions.

NOTE: The subject matter for this month’s lead article is a continuation of the article that appeared in Volume 11 – Number 2 – January 2009. It has been suggested that I include the whole article in this month’s issue. The complete article follows.

PERSONAL EVANGELISM

There are many people today who possess a form of religion that is displayed as hostile, disagreeable, and simply rude. I know of no occasion where it is a requirement of the person who seeks to be involved in personal evangelism to be anything but kind, considerate, and patient with those they seek to turn from the world and toward the love of God cf. John 3:16 ”For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.“ (KJV)

5. Being baptized – Acts 2:38; 1 Peter 3:21

AND - Christ then adds the saved person to His Body the Church - cf. Acts 2:47; 1 Cor 12:27 ”Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular“ (KJV)

glclair@aol.com                                                  Continued from February issue …

Whenever a person is obedient to God’s instruction regarding the plan of salvation that person is added to the church by the Lord.  This matter of being added to the Body of Christ (i.e. the Universal Church is an action by the Lord). This guarantees that no pretenders will be a part of the Universal Church only those that have truly been converted wholly to the truth – cf. John 8:32, ”… ye shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free (i.e. from sin).“

After having been added to the Body of Christ the new convert may seek to join the fellowship of a local congregation (i.e. a church) located at a specific address. The brethren will accept the new Christian based upon his/her creditable evidence offered that they are a Christian.

Upon their acceptance into a local congregation this new babe in Christ will need to begin a continuing process of growth – cf. 2 Peter 3:18 ”But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.“ (KJV)

The final accounting will not occur in this life. If we have lived faithfully all our lives to the Lord’s instruction, we will finally receive a reward. Note Paul’s reference to the crown of life in 2 Tim. 4:5-7.

The Road to Spiritual Health

There are many people who are ill today, suffering from dangerous maladies. Although this is not new, there are a greater number of people suffering from illness. It seems that in spite of the fact that there are new cures for many of the serious diseases that afflict mankind the number of people expiring increases each year. Many of these people will expire from cancer, heart problems, venereal diseases, and illegal drug abuse. Indeed, most of these deaths and others occur to people who have never considered the greatest disease of all that affects the living and those that die.

That disease is ”sin“. Yes! Many people never consider the fact that they may die some day (Heb. 9:27). Most of us are unconcerned with the idea of death until we reach an old age. Yet many people die before they reach 70 years of age. A large number of the population in America will die while still young due to accidents, illegal drug abuse, venereal diseases, and other factors. Many of these will never have thought of death until it suddenly takes them away from the living. Most of the people who die while still young never consider the death of their soul (i.e. eternal separation from God) - Heb. 9:27-28 27 And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment: 28 So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation.

Yet, to die while still in sin means that one will never go to heaven (i.e. a glorious paradise prepared for all the ”saved from sin“ people of all ages). Because of this alarming fact I want to let you know that God loves you and does not want you to die and never know him (John 3:16). I want to introduce you to the God of the Bible and God’s Heaven prepared for the people who have been saved from their sins and have lived and died as faithful children of God - cf. 1 Cor 2:9 But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him. (KJV)

You need not worry and fret about these matters while you are able to do something about your status with God. You can make your plans to go to heaven someday by coming to the Lord on His terms – cf. Matt 11:28-30 28 Come unto me , all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light. (KJV)

For a better understanding of this process of becoming a Christian and gaining confidence in your future with God please contact us at glclair@aol.com or send us a request by U.S. Mail and enroll in a 7 lesson Bible correspondence course that will assist you in knowing God and God’s plans for your future. Remember this; we do not know what tomorrow holds for us; while we are healthy and alert we ought to consider each day as a wonderful gift from God and plan to be with Him someday.

Acts 2:38

What does it mean?

There is a continuing controversy about the verse of Scripture listed in the heading. There are many different views about phrases and words in the Bible that seemingly cannot be solved. Perhaps the reason that these controversial verses cannot be agreed upon by men is their unwillingness to accept the facts pertaining to the interpretation. I mean that there are many people who take issue with those of us insisting that baptism is a burial in water. There are also many people who take issue with the Greek language whenever it is translated correctly about the matter of baptism’s purpose. The purpose of baptism according to the Apostle Peter’s sermon on Pentecost Day (i.e. inspired by God) in Acts 2:38 as stated is; ”For the remission of sins.“

A NEED TO BE HONEST

There are many religious people that will not honestly look at the evidence from the Greek translators and Greek scholars who understand the nature of Hebrew and Greek words. I am not a Greek specialist but the Greek lexicons and scholarly works are presented to us in such a way that I do not understand how or why everyone cannot see and understand the English translations and translators as using true and honest men in the process of translating the Hebrew and Greek languages into the English Language accurately.

Part of the problem with misunderstandings relating to words and phrases translated from Hebrew and Greek into English has to do with a few religious translators (i.e. belonging to a specific religious branch) who compromise their scholarship for their religious belief. This is possibly the number one cause among differing religious persuasions regarding acceptance of good translations of the text into English.

AN HONEST EXAMINATION OF ACTS 2:38

Acts 2:38, Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the

gift of the Holy Ghost. (KJV)

The part of the verse that we want to examine is underlined in the KJV text – above.

”… and be baptized every one of you in

the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins…“

1) Meaning of the word ”baptized“

NT:907 baptizo (bap-tid'-zo); from a derivative of NT:911; to immerse, submerge; to make overwhelmed (i.e. fully wet); used only (in the N. T.) of ceremonial ablution, especially (technically) of the ordinance of Christian baptism:

KJV - Baptist, baptize, wash.

(Biblesoft's New Exhaustive Strong's Numbers and Concordance with Expanded Greek-Hebrew Dictionary. Copyright © 1994, 2003 Biblesoft, Inc. and International Bible Translators, Inc.)

2) Meaning of ”for“

NT:1519 eis (ice); a primary preposition; to or into (indicating the point reached or entered), of place, time, or (figuratively) purpose (result, etc.); also in adverbial phrases:

KJV - [abundantly-], against, among, as, at, [back-] ward, before, by, concerning, continual, far more exceeding, for [intent, purpose fore],, forth, in (among, at, unto, -so much that, -to), to the intent that, of one mind, never, of, (up-) on, perish, set at one again, (so) that, therefore (-unto), throughout, till, to (be, the end, -ward), (here-) until (-to), ... ward, [wherefore-], with. Often used in composition with the same general import, but only with verbs (etc.) expressing motion (literally or figuratively).

(Biblesoft's New Exhaustive Strong's Numbers and Concordance with Expanded Greek-Hebrew Dictionary. Copyright © 1994, 2003 Biblesoft, Inc. and International Bible Translators, Inc.)

Repentance and Baptism

Whenever a person looks at the verse (i.e. Acts 2:38). It is impossible to get something out of the verse other than the clear translation in context by the translators of the KJV and the ASV. To find another meaning to the two words examined in this article is to do injustice to the Greek Language (Koine) and the English Language also.

In my estimation the repentance + baptism are both for (eis – ”ice“) the same purpose (salvation from sin). Consequently, any other interpretation placed on these words or this text is unwarranted. Not only is it unwarranted it is a violation of the Divine injunction to add nothing or take anything away from the Word of God (i.e. the Bible).

Celebrations

Barbara and I just celebrated our 50th wedding anniversary (i.e. March 7, 2009). I am always encouraged to see Christians celebrate great occasions in their lives some of the occasions that I find great are:

1. The marriage of a man and a woman

2. A married couple (i.e. man and woman) who discover that they will soon have a new family member

3. The birth of all their children

4. The first wedding anniversary and all wedding anniversaries thereafter

5. A child’s graduation from kindergarten

7. A child’s graduation from high school

8. A child’s graduation from college

9. A child that becomes a Christian while young

As a parent/grandparent:

1. Seeing our children become Christians

2. Seeing our children succeed in life

3. Our children’s marriage

4. The birth of our grandchildren

5. The grandchildren becoming Christians

6. The progress of our grandchildren in school

As an individual:

1. Becoming a Christian

2. Seeing the value of faithful service to God

3. Keeping my desires under control (i.e. buffeting my body daily) - 1 Cor. 9:25-27, 25 and every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown; but we an incorruptible. 26 I therefore so run, not as uncertainly; so fight I, not as one that beateth the air: 27 But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway. (KJV)

4. Serving God, my brethren, and my neighbors as true Christians ought - Mark 12:30-33, 30 and thou shall love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment. 31 And the second is like, namely this, Thou shall love thy neighbor as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these. 32 And the scribe said unto him, Well, Master, thou hast said the truth: for there is one God; and there is none other but he: 33 And to love him with all the heart , and with all the understanding, and with all the soul, and with all the strength, and to love his neighbor as himself, is more than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices.

Indeed, the important things in life are to be pursued by the Christian. Perhaps next to the Christian’s love and adherence to God’s Instruction is the acknowledgement of love and consideration for family and family members. Our examples before our children and grandchildren may have an eternal effect upon their lives.

A NEW STUDY ABOUT TEACHING THE BIBLE

The first Saturday night in each month we will meet at the meeting-house of the church for a study that relates to teaching; the starting time will be 6:00 PM. each first Saturday in the month beginning April 4, 2009.

The study will proceed on the first Saturday night in following months until we complete it.

There is always a need to teach others how to teach; especially to encourage Bible teachers. The great apostle Paul suggested that capable teachers ought to teach others about the gospel and other matters but that they ought to be sound in the faith –

NOTE:

2 Timothy 2:2 ”And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.“

The title of the book is ”Effectively Teaching Adult Bible Class“ by Charles Willis. The study consists of nine chapters.

OUR GOALS

One of the great opportunities and privileges of faithful Christians is teaching the Bible in a class setting. Each person who becomes a Christian will consider teaching a Bible class after a while and after they have been trained to do so.

We will continue to do whatever we find to be successful in the Bible study here with new emphasis on learning and putting into action those things learned in Bible classes.

Garreth Clair will lead the first class; presenting an introduction and overview of the book in a nut-shell. Garreth will also teach the first chapter of the book.

We encourage everyone to mark the 1st Saturday of each month for this class in developing teachers and better teachers in Bible classes.

Volume 11                           Number 5                           May 2009

=============================================================

CHRIST HAS ALL AUTHORITY

(Jehovah’s Witnesses are in error here)

Matthew 28:18-20

18 And Jesus came and spoke unto them, saying, all power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. 19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: 20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen. (KJV)

The 18th verse is a claim by Jesus Christ that he now possesses all (i.e. complete) authority over everything in heaven and in earth. This claim is further defined in 1 Corinthians 15:24 where it is stated that after Jesus had conquered death, the Devil and exercised judgment upon all creation (John 12:48) that he (i.e. Jesus Christ) will then deliver up the Kingdom (i.e. the Body of Christ) to the Father (i.e. thus, returning all authority unto the Father.)

Jehovah’s Witnesses are dead wrong whenever they make the claim that the Father is always in charge of all things that deal with man and his existence and future hopes.  They are also wrong in their suggestion that Jesus is of an inferior quantity of God than the Father.

Jehovah’s Witnesses have gone so far as to create a whole new translation of the Bible especially declaring that Jesus Christ is a god (not capitalized – a little god compared to the Father). They are dead wrong, in this use of the Greek Language in John 1:1 of their New World Translation.

NO GOOD TIME FOR SIN

There is a mind-set in some people that says, ”I am not responsible until after I have sowed my wild oats.“ Exactly what one means (i.e. personally thinks) about responsibility to God is wrong? No one can willfully disobey God whenever they arrive at an age when they know the difference between right and wrong.

EXAMPLE and COMMENT:

As a person develops from birth, there is a time when they understand that lying is wrong (i.e. should not be done). There is a time when an individual realizes that hurting another person deliberately is wrong (i.e. perhaps deadly). There is a time when one knows that to take things that belong to other people is wrong (i.e. against the law). Indeed, there is a time in the individuals physical and mental development that they are aware of their amenability to the civil authorities and that if they break civil laws they will have to answer to the courts.

As one develops in the previous ways they also develop a sense of responsibility (i.e. an understanding that their actions are being observed by God also). Whenever a person’s intellect reaches a state when they know that they are not doing that which God requires of them they are sinners and need to think about making some corrections in their manner (i.e. standard of living) before man and before God. This is known generally as reaching the age of accountability (i.e. to God). A Bible references that shows man’s responsibility - Mark 7:14 ”And when he had called all the people unto him, he said unto them, hearken unto me every one of you, and understand:“ KJV

At some point whenever a person reaches an understanding of their lost condition (i.e. the need to correct their disobedience to God) with regard to God and the things that are righteous they must make a decision about their life. The decision cannot be deferred, it must be made one way or the other – A person will either choose to serve God or will become a servant of the Devil by ignoring their responsibility to serve God. NOTE: Joshua of long ago – Josh. 24:14-15, 14 Now therefore fear the LORD, and serve him in sincerity and in truth: and put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the flood, and in Egypt; and serve ye the LORD. 15 And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve ; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD. (KJV)

Young people need to be taught by godly parents that there is a God and that God is truly real and that God is great. Parents need to instruct their children that disobedience to God’s instructions is sin. Parents need to tell their children about salvation from sin at an appropriate time in the children’s physical and mental development. Parents need to correct their children’s actions and speech that indicate that they are becoming responsible to God’s law and tell them that sin in their life must be corrected. Parents ought to encourage their children to listen closely to teaching about sin and the cure for sin in the lives of sinners. Indeed, parents ought to tell their children about God’s plan of salvation for the sinner.

Are we conscious of the passing of time with our children as they grow physical and mentally? We must understand that it is our duty to God, to ourselves, and to our children to keep them up-to-date about God and God’s expectations of their actions and conduct. Parents and grandparents, are we doing the job? We must!

COUNTING THE COST

Do you count the cost before you invest your time, money, and effort into long term commitment? Perhaps one of the great failings of man is the failure to learn the lesson that Jesus taught during his earthly sojourn. Do you remember the passage in Luke where Jesus uses the concept of counting the cost before a person undertakes a project; cf. Luke 14:28-32 - 28 For which of you, desiring to build a tower, doth not first sit down and count the cost, whether he have (wherewith) to complete it? 29 Lest haply, when he hath laid a foundation, and is not able to finish, all that behold begin to mock him, 30 saying, This man began to build, and was not able to finish. 31 Or what king, as he goeth to encounter another king in war, will not sit down first and take counsel whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him that cometh against him with twenty thousand? 32 Or else, while the other is yet a great way off, he sendeth an ambassage, and asketh conditions of peace. (ASV)

There is a great lesson in the passage referred to (previous paragraph – Luke 14:28-32) that many people overlook in the process of life. The greatest and perhaps most important event that is overlooked as a person lives their life is – ”How do I know that I will be successful in life? How will I know whether I have selected the right person for my mate? How can I be assured that I am rearing my children correctly? How will I know whether my life will really count for anything worthwhile?“ Indeed, I suspect many people ask themselves these questions as they leave childhood and began to understand the realities of living in the world. Yet, these questions and considerations of living life may be answered simply by listening to Jesus Christ in the passage cited – cf.  Luke 14:28-32.

Whenever we leave childhood we ought to ”count the cost“ of building a life with or without God in our lives. We will be wise to consider all of the facts that a healthy, prosperous, peaceful, and reverent life will benefit us if we commit our lives to serve the ”one true God“. Some of the promises offered by God for faithful Christian living is found in the Bible, please note the following:

1. Without God’s Instruction we cannot direct our own steps – Jer. 10:23 - 23 O LORD, I know that the way of man is not in himself: it is not in man that walketh to direct his steps. (KJV)

2. Christ will help us and share our problems and our joys – Matt. 11:28-30 - 28 Come unto me , all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light. (KJV)

3. Jesus  will mediate our prayer requests(i.e. act as our advocate to the Father) - 1 Tim. 2:5-6 - 5 For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus; 6 Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time. (KJV)

4. Finally after a lifetime of faithful service (Rev. 2:10) Christ will welcome us into that eternal Heaven prepared for the Righteous – Heb. 9:27-28 - 27 And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment: 28 So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation.

1 Peter 1:4-9 - 4 To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you, 5 Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. 6 Wherein ye greatly rejoice, though now for a season, if need be, ye are in heaviness through manifold temptations: 7 That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honor and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ: 8 Whom having not seen, ye love; in whom, though now ye see him not, yet believing, ye rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory: 9 Receiving the end of your faith, even the salvation of your souls. (KJV)

WILL YOU CHOOSE TO LIVE YOUR LIFE FOR GOD? IF YOU WILL YOU WILL BE ASSURED OF A BEARABLE AND ENJOYABLE LIFE HERE AND AN ETERNAL HOME WITH GOD IN THE FUTURE.

THE ROAD TO RUIN

The lessons of life are often effective only to those that have experienced them. I do not mean to imply that one must do everything that they want or desire in life as they progress from childhood to old age. I do mean that some people seem to never learn from personal experiences or from observing the difficulties of family members and/or friends. Many people have to experience personal tragedies in order to cease a serious flaw in their actions or lifestyle. The person that commits fornication or adultery may realize that they are violating the law of God (Matt. 19:9; 1 Cor. 6:18; Eph. 5:3; etc.) but in far too many cases that does not stop them from their sinning ways. The person that possess a greedy spirit may know that it is wrong to defraud others and that stealing (cf. Rom. 2:21; Eph. 4:28) – NIV)  is sinful (cf. Eph. 5:3 – NIV) but that does not deter many who are bent upon acquiring wealth by any means whether honest or not. Many people do not take their relationship to God seriously, they allow other things; worldly in nature to occupy too much of their time.

Those that desire to go to heaven someday will not allow themselves to become involved in sinful practices but will consistently place themselves in situations that encourage faithfulness to God’s will. The Christian will always be conscious of their need to learn continually more and more about God’s will for their lives (cf. 2 Peter 3:18 - But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen. (KJV)

The Christian is instructed by the Written Word (i.e. the Bible) to abstain from all evil, please note the following references.

1. Acts 15:29 - that you abstain from things sacrificed to idols and from blood and from things strangled and from fornication; if you keep yourselves free from such things, you will do well. (NASB)

2. 1 Thess. 4:3-6 - 3 For this is the will of God, your sanctification; that is, that you abstain from sexual immorality; 4 that each of you know how to possess his own vessel in sanctification and honor, 5 not in lustful passion, like the Gentiles who do not know God; 6 and that no man transgress and defraud his brother in the matter because the Lord is the avenger in all these things, just as we also told you before and solemnly warned you. (NASU)

3. 1 Thess. 5:21-22 - 21 But examine everything carefully; hold fast to that which is good; 22 abstain from every form of evil

2 Tim. 2:19 - 19 Nevertheless, the firm foundation of God stands, having this seal, " The Lord knows those who are His," and, " Everyone who names the name of the Lord is to abstain from wickedness." (NASU)

1 Peter 2:11-12 - 11 Beloved, I urge you as aliens and strangers to abstain from fleshly lusts which wage war against the soul. 12 Keep your behavior excellent among the Gentiles, so that in the thing in which they slander you as evildoers, they may because of your good deeds, as they observe them; glorify God in the day of visitation. (NASU) - glclair@aol.com - April 22, 2009

THE ORDER IN THE BODY OF CHRIST

1 Cor. 3:3-9

3 for you are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you envying, and strife, and divisions, are ye not carnal, and walk as men?

4 For while one saith, I am of Paul; and another, I am of Apollos; are ye not carnal?

5 Who then is Paul, and who is Apollos, but ministers by whom ye believed, even as the Lord gave to every man?

6 I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase.

7 So then neither is he that planteth any

thing, neither he that watereth; but God that giveth the increase.

8 Now he that planteth and he that watereth are one: and every man shall receive his own reward according to his own labor.

9 For we are laborers together with God: ye are God's husbandry, ye are God's building.

The church is a Divine Institution with a set order for everyone who is a part of it.

In the New Testament we have the Divine arrangement set forth so that we do not have to fuss over our particular place in it.

In the text; 1 Cor. 3 we have some material that tells us that the church (i.e. its

members) all have their place. In this text Paul is disappointed in the membership of the Corinthian congregation because they apparently misunderstood the role of the teachers, the hearers, and the relationship of each to God and to each other (verses 3-4). The failure to understand the role of teachers and their mission by the congregation had caused division in the congregation. The division might be referred to as cliques; each clique claiming allegiance to a specific teacher. Paul says of this division that it displays carnality (i.e. ”fleshly things“ – not understanding properly spiritual things – From – A Critical Lexicon and Concordance by E.W. Bullinger – pages 134-135 – def. #2) on the part of those involved in these cliques. Indeed, cliques in the congregation are a detriment to progress and soundness; this is true because the various cliques spend their time competing with each other for prominence when they ought to be promoting Jesus Christ and His Church. There are times when it seems that within our brotherhood the most important thing to some is to make sure that there is some kind of issue that brethren can fuss over when they all should be fussing about the lack of progress in the local church. Was it not Jesus who told us to ”seek the kingdom of God first“ in our list of things for disciples to do (cf. Matt 6:33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

In verse 5 – Paul tells those that were following a particular man that all men are just men, that each Christian regardless of his position, age, personality, etc. were all servants of God. Paul encourages them to disband these cliques and all together serve the Lord Jesus Christ as a single unit (i.e. to the congregation in Corinth he is encouraging unity under one Head – i.e. Jesus Christ) cf. Col. 1:18-19 18 And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence. 19 For it pleased the Father that in him should all fullness dwell; (KJV)

In verse 6-8 Paul instructs those that he has referred to as carnal minded to understand the role of teachers. Paul says that teachers are to sow the good seed (i.e. ”the Word of God“ – Luke 8:5-11). Paul clearly understood that those that know the truth will be free from sin and schism (John 8:32; John 17:17). Paul is careful to show the roll of the teacher (i.e. preacher. elders, or otherwise) as all equals in a project for Christ to teach everyone the truth of the gospel (cf. Matt. 28:18-20; 2 Tim. 2:2). Paul continues in verse 8 saying that the key figure in the conversion of the sinner is not man but that the increase will be the result of Christ efforts (i.e. He will give the increase).

In verse 9 Paul concludes this context with a call to unity of purpose and understanding; 9 for we are laborers together with God: ye are God's husbandry, ye are God's building. glclair@aol.com - May 20, 2009

TOMORROW

”Tomorrow“ I have heard that word many times in my life so that I can reasonably suggest that it is used to justify delays in action far too often. One of the great factors that contribute to the failure of many people in obedience to the gospel is; ”wait till tomorrow“ but tomorrow never comes with their good decision to become a Christian.

Indeed, procrastination is a serious problem to many people who intend to get their life right with God but just can’t (i.e. will not) make the commitment or sit a time for carrying through with their plans. It seems that many people just do not set down and count the cost as we find in Luke (cf. Luke 14:28, For which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost, whether he have sufficient to finish it?

The Lord and the writers of the New Testament tell us to obey the Lord; tell us to come to Him and be saved, etc. Note the following instruction from God about decision making and the urgency of the decision:

Matt. 11:28 - Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give

you rest. (KJV)

Matt. 16:24 - Then said Jesus unto his

disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. (KJV)

Matt. 19:21-23 - 21 Jesus said unto him, If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shall have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me. 22 But when the young man heard that saying, he went away sorrowful: for he had great possessions. 23 Then said Jesus unto his disciples, Verily I say unto you, that a rich man shall hardly enter into the kingdom of heaven.

Acts 2:37-41 - 37 Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do? 38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. 39 For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call. 40 And with many other words did he testify and exhort, saying, save yourselves from this untoward generation. 41 Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.

WILL YOU SERVE JESUS CHRIST?

Jesus can save you from your sins – Jesus can give you that new start in life that you have been putting off for far too long. Indeed, come to Jesus today! –

CHECK THE SCRIPTURE REFERENCES THAT FOLLOW …

James 4:13-14 - 13 Go to now, ye that say, To day or to morrow we will go into such a city, and continue there a year, and buy and sell, and get gain: 14 Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appeared for a little time, and then vanished away. (KJV)

Heb. 4:7 - Again, he limiteth a certain day , saying in David, To day , after so long a time; as it is said, To day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts.

Heb. 3:15 - While it is said, to day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts, as in the provocation. (KJV)

Heb. 3:7-8 - 7 Wherefore (as the Holy Ghost saith, To day if ye will hear his voice, 8 Harden not your hearts, as in the provocation, in the day of temptation in the wilderness: (KJV)

2 Tim. 1:12 - For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day. (KJV)

        SOME THOUGHTS ABOUT CALVANISM

EDITOR’S NOTE:

The editor presented a sermon here at Cemetery Road in Hilliard, Ohio on the subject, ”Calvinism“ The title of the sermon, ”Religion’s corrupt flower – ”T.U.L.I.P.“ from material prepared by Leslie Diestelkamp {Deceased}. The sermon is on Cassette tape in our library # 249.

One of the great problems to understanding the differences between churches of Christ and many other religious movements is the difference in basic doctrinal philosophies about God, man, sin, salvation, etc. One of the most prominent methods of interpreting scripture is that by John Calvin and known as ”Calvinism.“ Two of the authorative books dealing with the subject of Calvinism is that of Loraine Boettner ”THE REFORMED DOCTRINE“ of Predestination. {Philipsburg Presbyterian and Reform Publishing Company, 1932}. In this study we will quote from pages 182 and 358, etc. We will also refer to David N. Steele and Curtis C. Thomas, ”THE FIVE POINTS OF CALVINISM.“ {Philipsburg Presbyterian and Reform Publishing, 1963}. Pages 16-18, 25, 38, 48, etc.

The following is part of an  article by Thomas W. Franklin dealing with the subject and showing some of the difficulties or reconciling the correct interpretation of the Scripture with the theory of ”Calvinism“ that so many religious denominations FOLLOW.

CALVINISM DEFINED:

Calvinism is a doctrinal system based primarily on the concept that the sovereignty of God demands that He predestine and control all that transpires in creation. Calvinist carries this to the extent that they cannot reconcile the sovereignty of God with the free will of man.

From this concept of the effects of God’s sovereignty flow the five points (i.e., T.U.L.I.P.) of Calvinism. These five points were formally developed as an answer to the five articles of faith drawn up by the followers of Jacobius Arminius (a Dutch theologian) whose views were rejected by the Synod of Dort in 1619.

SET IN AN ACROSTIC OUTLINE – T.U.L.I.P.

T.       Total Depravity or Total Inability – ”Because of the fall (i.e., Adam’s sin) man is unable  to believe the gospel to the saving of his soul. As a result of this corruption the natural man is totally unable to do anything spiritually good ... instead, man’s will as the result of inherited depravity is in bondage to his sinful nature.“

U.   Unconditional Election (i.e., Predestination) – ”God’s choice of certain individuals unto salvation before the foundation of the world rest solely in his own sovereign will. Thus, God’s choice of the sinner, not the sinner’s choice of Christ, is the ultimate cause of salvation.“

L.   Limited Atonement – ”Christ’s redeeming work was intended to save the elect only Christ Perfectly kept God’s law and thereby worked out a perfect righteousness which is imputed to them the moment they are brought to faith in Him.“

I.   Irresistible Grace – ”The Holy Spirit extends to the elect a special inward call that inevitably brings them to salvation“ it ”cannot be rejected.“ It ”enables to understand and believe spiritual truth.“

P.   Perseverance of the Saints – ”This does not stand alone but is a necessary part of the Calvinist system of theology. The doctrine of Election and Efficacious Grace logically implies the certain salvation of those who receive these blessings.“

NOTE:

This false doctrinal concept is so prevalent in protestant Denominations that nearly all of them are influenced by it in some way.

CALVINISM AND OPEN FELLOWSHIP OF ALL BELIEVERS

Another doctrinal position taken by Calvinist is the Open fellowship of all believers. The following quotation from Boettner illustrates this position. ”while the Presbyterian Church is preeminently a doctrinal church. She never demands the full acceptance of her standards by any applicant for admission to her fold. A credible profession of faith in Christ is her only condition of church membership. As Calvinists we gladly recognize as our fellow Christians any who trust Christ for their salvation. Regardless of how inconsistent their other beliefs may be.“

This position is necessary since the Calvinist admit that others to whom the Spirit has not really given that inward call of election may feel that same assurance of salvation as those whom God had truly elected. Furthermore the truly elect may appear to have lost faith, be deluded by the world and led astray by his own carnal appetite. Calvinists do not really know where or who the elect are! Under this doctrine perhaps they are wise to open the doors to all suspects – all believers - since they just might be one of the elect.

SOME IMPORTANT THINGS TO NOTE AND REMEMBER ABOUT CALVINISM

Many, in reflecting on Calvinism, are likely to think only of such things as Election and Predestination. But we must remember also that there are other doctrines erroneous and inescapably linked with these and other tenants of Calvinism.

CONCLUSION:

The religious philosophy of John Calvin has had great influence among Bible Printers to such a degree that some translations, one man translations [Taylor’s Translation], and even some Greek studies are proponents of Calvin’s philosophies. Consequently, whenever a person seeks a good study Bible, be careful that you do not get one that promotes this false and destructive doctrine.

Beware the ”False Doctrine of John Calvin“! The current article is appearing here in the HILLIARD BULLETIN due to a request from a regular reader.

GOD IS A TRINITY

QUESTION:

I have a friend who is a Jehovah’s Witness who says there is no trinity in the Bible. She says that the God of the Bible is Jehovah only and that Jesus and the Holy Spirit were servants (angels) of Jehovah. Is that what you understand about the God of the Bible?

MY ANSWER by glclair@aol.com

In the beginning there was God:

1. The FATHER and SPIRIT are mentioned in Gen. 1:1-2.

2. JESUS CHRIST (i.e. the WORD) is mentioned in John 1:1

3. The two readings establish that all three members of the Godhead were present at the CREATION!

Genesis 1:1-2 - 1 in the beginning God created the Heaven and the earth.

2 And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. (KJV)

John 1:1 - in the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. (KJV)

The Godhead is a trinity – Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

Each member of the Godhead exists and is one in purpose (i.e. intent); these three are in complete accord in all things.

Consider the following as Biblical proof that God consists of FATHER, SON, and HOLY SPIRIT:

The first four books of the New Testament (i.e. Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John) state the facts for us regarding the trinity - All three members of the Godhead were present and identified at the baptism of Jesus by John the baptizer in the River Jordan.

Matt. 3:16-17

16 And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him:

17 And lo a voice from heaven, saying, this is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. (KJV)

Mark 1:10-12

10 And straightway coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens opened, and the Spirit like a dove descending upon him:

11 And there came a voice from heaven, saying, Thou art my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

12 And immediately the Spirit drives him into the wilderness. (KJV)

Luke 3:21-22

21 Now when all the people were baptized, it came to pass, that Jesus also being baptized, and praying, the heaven was opened,

22 And the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him, and a voice came from heaven, which said, Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased. (KJV)

John 1:32-34

32 And John bare record, saying, I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it abode upon him.

33 And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he which baptizeth with the Holy Ghost.

34 And I saw, and bare record that this is the Son of God. (KJV)

The current trends among this new generation (ages 10-35) are rejection of all authority from any source. Indeed, there are a few exceptions to this trend but the vast majority of this age group accepts no restraints from any source including parents, school, government authorities, and friends that cross them. This situation has been brought about in America by very poor parenting and liberal activists that have screamed children’s rights Hollywood  has taught children the lifestyle they accept today, and various positions of authority at school, and in elected and appointed officials in government.

WHAT IS THE ANSWER?

That is a good question but a question our society must answer. Unless a solution is found our way of life on this plant since the Genesis flood may soon be over ---

NOTE FOLLOWING …

(Genesis 6:17-7:1 - 17 And, behold, I, even I, do bring a flood of waters upon the earth, to destroy all flesh, wherein is the breath of life, from under heaven; and every thing that is in the earth shall die. 18 But with thee will I establish my covenant; and thou shall come into the ark, thou, and thy sons, and thy wife, and thy sons' wives with thee. 19 And of every living thing of all flesh, two of every sort shall thou bring into the ark, to keep them alive with thee; they shall be male and female. 20 Of fowls after their kind, and of cattle after their kind, of every creeping thing of the earth after his kind, two of every sort shall come unto thee, to keep them alive. 21 And take thou unto thee of all food that is eaten, and thou shall gather it to thee; and it shall be for food for thee, and for them. 22 Thus did Noah; according to all that God commanded him, so did he. --- Genesis 7 - 7:1 And the LORD said unto Noah, Come thou and all thy house into the ark; for thee have I seen righteous before me in this generation. (KJV)

TIME for man to change is passing (I.e. the way of life approved and revealed by Almighty God via. the Bible) is man's only hope.    Serve God today!

The wonder of it all

Often in our daily lives we encounter persons or events that cause us to wonder about the results, the motivation of those involved, or the cause/causes of the event. While we do not understanding all that happens in the world and why these things happen we do know that there is knowledge about it all by the Creator of the universe ---

1 John 3:19-20 - 19 We shall know by this that we are of the truth, and shall assure our heart before Him, 20 in whatever our heart condemns us; for God is greater than our heart, and knows all things.(NASB)

There are many puzzling events that we all experience in life; some more than others because of the nature of their involvement in the world and the things of the world. Even though this is so; we understand that God has the answer to our problems and stunning events of life ---

Jeremiah 10:23 - 23 O LORD, I know that the way of man is not in himself: it is not in man that walketh to direct his steps.

Indeed, God knows all things about every person and every event ---

Mark 10:27 - 27 Looking at them, Jesus said, "With people it is impossible, but not with God; for all things are possible with God."

Acts 17:24-26 - 24 " The God who made the world and all things in it, since He is Lord of heaven and earth, does not dwell in temples made with hands; 25 nor is He served by human hands, as though He needed anything, since He Himself gives to all people life and breath and all things; 26 and He made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined their appointed times and the boundaries of their habitation, (NASU)

Heb. 4:13 - And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are open and laid bare to the eyes of Him with whom we have to do.

Since this is sol we ought to place our lives and our confidence in God who makes all things and understands all things about us, our lives, our friends, our weaknesses and our strengths, who will save us from our sins and from all unrighteousness if we will come to Him on his terms ---

Matt. 11:25-30

25 Come to me at that time Jesus said, "I praise You, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you have hidden these things from the wise and intelligent and have revealed them to infants.

26 "Yes, Father, for this way was well-pleasing in your sight.

27 " All things have been handed over to Me by My Father; and no one knows the Son except the Father; nor does anyone know the Father except the Son, and anyone to whom the Son wills to reveal Him.

28 "Come to me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest.

29 "Take My yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and YOU WILL FIND REST FOR YOUR SOULS.

30 "For My yoke is easy and my burden is light." (NASU)

Do you need understanding, forgiveness for sins, and desire to have a better life with better and more association with Christian people. Then you need to become a Christian and become part of a sound church of Christ. There are many congregations of God’s people meeting everywhere – if you need an address of a sound church send us a note we will be happy to provide you with information about the church in your area. --- glclair@aol.com

EXAMINING THE WORD JESTING

(Found in the KJV and ASV)

TEXT: Eph. 5:4 - Neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which is not convenient: but rather giving of thanks. (KJV)

Ephesians 5:4

Neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not convenient: but rather giving of thanks.

[Neither filthiness] Aischrotees. Anything base or vile in words or acts.

[Foolish talking] Moorologia. Scurrility, buffoonery, ridicule, or what tends to expose another to contempt.

[Nor jesting] Eutrapelia. Artfully turned discourses or words, from eu, well or easily, and tropee, I turn; words that can be easily turned to other meanings; double entendres; chaste words which, from their connection, and the manner in which they are used, convey an obscene or offensive meaning. It also means jests, puns, witty sayings, and mountebank repartees of all kinds.

[Which are not convenient] Ouk aneeken. They do not come up to the proper standard; they are utterly improper in themselves, and highly unbecoming in those who profess Christianity.

[But rather giving of thanks.] Eucharistia. Decent and edifying discourse or thanksgiving to God. Prayer or praise is the most suitable language for man; and he who is of a trifling, light disposition, and is ill fitted for either. How can a man, who has been talking foolishly or jestingly in company, go in private to magnify God for the use of his tongue which he has abused, or his rational faculties which he has degraded?

(From Adam Clarke's Commentary, Electronic Database. Copyright © 1996, 2003 by Biblesoft, Inc. All rights reserved.)

Eph. 5:4 - [Nor jesting] eutrapelia. This word occurs also nowhere else in the New Testament. It properly means, that which is "well-turned" eu - well, and prepoo - to turn); and then that which is sportive, refined, courteous; and then "urbanity, humor, wit; and then jesting, levity" - which is evidently the meaning here. The apostle would not forbid courteousness, or refinement of manners (compare 1 Peter 3:8), and the reference, therefore, must be to that which is light and trifling in conversation; to that which is known among us as jesting. It may be observed:

(1) That "courteousness" is not forbidden in the Scriptures, but is positively required; 1 Peter 3:8.

(2) "Cheerfulness" is not forbidden-for if anything can make cheerful, it is the hope of heaven.

(3) "Pleasantry" cannot be forbidden. I mean that quiet and gentle humor that arises from good-nature, and that makes one good-natured in spite of himself.

Such are many of the poems of Cowper, and many of the essays of Addison in the "Spectator" - a benevolent humor which disposes us to smile, but not to be malignant; to be good-natured, but not to inspire levity. But levity and jesting, though often manifested by ministers and other Christians, are as inconsistent with true dignity as with the gospel. Where were they seen in the conversation of the Redeemer? Where in the writings of Paul?

(From Barnes' Notes, Electronic Database Copyright © 1997, 2003 by Biblesoft, Inc. All rights reserved.)

Ephesians 5:3-20

The apostle not only cautions against the gross acts of sin, but against what some may be apt to make light of, and think to be excusable. Neither filthiness (v. 4), by which may be understood all wanton and unseemly gestures and behavior; nor foolish talking, obscene and lewd discourse, or, more generally, such vain discourse as betrays much folly and indiscretion, and is far from edifying the hearers; nor jesting. The Greek word eutrapelia is the same which Aristotle, in his Ethics, makes a virtue: pleasantness of conversation. And there is no doubt an innocent and inoffensive jesting, which we cannot suppose the apostle here forbids. Some understand him of such scurrilous and abusive reflections as tend to expose others and to make them appear ridiculous. This is bad enough: but the context seems to restrain it to such pleasantry of discourse as is filthy and obscene, which he may also design by that corrupt, or putrid and rotten, communication that he speaks of, Eph 4:29.

NOTE BY Garreth L. Clair:

The notes listed above give one a good understanding of the word jesting.

The word coarse is found in the NKJV; an addition – This addition adds nothing to the concept of jesting as described in the context of verses 3-5 of this text. The three above references give one a good idea why the framers of the NKJV inserted the word ”coarse“ – course being rough or abrasive in basic meaning.

Inflected Form(s): coars·er; coars·est

Etymology: Middle English cors, perhaps from course, noun

1 : of ordinary or inferior quality or value : COMMON

2 a (1) : composed of relatively large parts or particles <coarse sand> (2) : loose or rough in texture <coarse cloth> b : adjusted or designed for heavy, fast, or less delicate work <a coarse saw with large teeth> c : not precise or detailed with respect to adjustment or discrimination

3 : crude or unrefined in taste, manners, or language

4 : harsh, raucous, or rough in tone

5 chiefly British : of or relating to coarse fish <coarse fishing>

Opportunities Are Present

Garreth Clair

The church must continue to extend its borders. When we find ourselves self-satisfied as to the amount of outside work that is being done with the lost, we should stop and take inventory of our direction. Sometimes congregations of God's people become so self-secure in their own local work that they turn from the areas around them, and seek things to their own benefit. There are many worthy men and places which deserve whatever help that they receive. All of us ought to consider all calls for help. In consideration of men and places to help, we ought to secure whatever information is readily at hand. If then, the man and place appear deserving; we ought to help according to our ability.

A Serious Danger:

The message to one of the seven churches of Asia (Rev. 3-4) reveals to us that there will, from time to time, be presented to us an open door of opportunity. The church under consideration is the church at Philadelphia (Rev. 3:7-13). Similar opportunities might be presented to some congregation today. Such opportunities are to be grasped if the congregation is able. It would appear from the text that failure to take advantage of this opportunity on the part of the Philadelphian church would result in their rejection by God. If such an opportunity were presented to a congregation today, do you suppose that failure to take advantage of it would result in any less than rejection by God? I believe that we can all see the dangers in failure to act when opportunity and ability are present. Yes, we must act, when a door of opportunity is offered to us.

Never Be Self-satisfied

From time to time such opportunities will be offered to most any congregation. We must take advantage of these opportunities if we are able. Failure to do so could condemn us eternally. The attitude that we manifest ought to be, "if we can, we will."

"A Missionary Church - Philippi"

Garreth L. Clair

Paul himself tells us of the devotion and zeal of the Philippians church. While Paul was in Thessalonica shortly after leaving Philippi (Acts 17:1-9), the church in Philippi at least twice had sent gifts for his needs (Phil. 4:16). They kept up this good work when the apostle went to Corinth and was "in want," for it was not Corinth but Philippi alone at first that supplied his wants above what he could supply with his own hands (2 Cor. 11:9; Phil. 4:15). The example set by the Philippians church was later followed by some other congregations, though never by all. Concerning Corinth, Paul states, "I robbed other churches, taking wages of them that I might minister unto you" (2 Cor. 11: 8). "In the beginning of the Gospel, when I departed from Macedonia, no church had fellowship (ekoinonesen - "had partnership") with me in the matter of giving and receiving but ye only" (Phil. 4:15). It is inferred that Thessalonica and Berea (perhaps) soon joined with Philippi and helped Paul at Corinth. Certainly Thessalonica became "an example to all that believe in Macedonia and Achaia" (I Thess. 1: 7). From them "has echoed forth the word of the Lord" (I Thess. 1: 8).

None of the churches with which Paul worked was as thoroughly missionary in spirit and in deed as the church in Philippi. The church in Philippi rallied heartily and steadily to the support of Paul's missionary work throughout the vast Roman Empire. They set the example for all time for the church that has a desire to show its love for the lost souls of fallen humanity.

The church at Philippi probably did far more for Paul than he has revealed in his letters. The last instance of their "fellowship," after an interval when they lacked "opportunity" (Phil. 4: 10), was while, Paul was in Rome the first time, when they sent Epaphroditus, "your messenger and minister, to my need" (Phil. 2:25). Paul referred to this gift as "an odor of a sweet smell, a sacrifice acceptable, well pleasing to God" (Phil. 4:18).

Paul depended on the church in Philippi greatly in raising the collection for the poor Saints in Jerusalem from the churches in Galatia, Macedonia, Achaia, and Asia. The churches in Achaia were quick to promise and slow to pay, like some congregations today. Under the prodding of Titus they promised a whole year ahead (2 Cor. 8: 10), and Paul used their prompt pledge to stir the Macedonian churches (9:2). And now he has to spur the Achaian churches on to actual response by the liberality and prompt response of the Macedonian churches (8:1-15; 9:1-5). Paul does not wish to be ashamed of the Achaian churches if he comes with some of the Macedonian brethren to whom he has boasted of the Achaian liberal promises. It is all a very modern situation drawn from everyday life. But it is clearly the congregation at Philippi I poor and generous, which has long had the habit of giving, that set the mood for the other Macedonian churches and for the Achaian churches as well.

The church no longer exists in Philippi, but the example which the church left for us to follow is very clear. We must not ignore the need in other places. If the local congregation is able, it should support all the preaching and teaching that it can, anywhere the need arises. Yes, our responsibility begins at home but it does not end at home.

CONCERN FOR THE LOST

As we continue to work here in Hilliard with the good people that make up the congregation we are concerned about those multitudes within the area here who are not Christians and who live according to standards contrary to God’s will. There are so many people that we desire to talk with and/or set down in a quiet place and discuss the will of God. Many people do not understand that life is short and there are possible consequence to delaying a decision about becoming familiar with the God of the Bible and becoming a subject to the King of Kings in this present existence - 1 Tim 6:14-15

14 That thou keep this commandment without spot, unrebukeable, until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ:

15 Which in his times he shall show, who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings , and Lord of lords; KJV

No person can adequately predict their future life and the length of their days upon this earth. Because life is uncertain we ought to remind those that we know about the frailty of life and the uncertainty of tomorrow. - James 4:13-14

13 Come now, ye that say, today or tomorrow we will go into this city, and spend a year there, and trade, and get gain:

14 whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow - What is your life? For ye are a vapor, that appeared for a little time, and then vanished away. ASV

--- Don’t forget our Bible study sessions and special opportunities to participate in some of the work that the congregation is involved in. We especially encourage everyone to attend the regularly scheduled Bible studies. The teachers are all doing excellent preparation and the studies are sound and well presented.

AS TIME PASSES

[I.e. THE LATTER DAYS]

TEXT: 1 Timothy 4:1-2 (ASV)

”1 But the Spirit saith expressly, that in later times some shall fall away from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits and doctrines of demons,

2 through the hypocrisy of men that speak lies, branded in their own conscience as with a hot iron;“

1 Timothy 4:1-3 (ESV)

1 Now the Spirit expressly says that in later times some will depart from the faith by devoting themselves to deceitful spirits and teachings of demons, 2 through the insincerity of liars whose consciences are seared,

INTRODUCTION:

The phrase ‘In the last days’ or in the latter days’ and similar phrases in the New Testament may refer to several events or specific occurrences. The passage in 1 Timothy surely refers to the last dispensation and events that will occur during that period of time. These last days in the text surely mean that period of time beginning with the establishment of the church or the destruction of Jerusalem. It is my opinion that this period covers the time from Pentecost of Acts 2 until the resurrection and judgment at the last day.

REFERENCE:

I.      IN THE LAST DAYS FROM Acts 2:17 ”And it shall be in the last days, saith God, I will pour forth of my Spirit upon all flesh: And your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams:“ ASV

NOTE: Surely this refers to the establishment of the church on Pentecost day {Acts 2:1-47}.

SEVERAL EVENTS ARE TO OCCUR [i.e. possibly over and over with each generation].

THESE THINGS WILL HAPPEN ”… in later times“

1.         Some [people] will fall away from the truth.  This does not state that they will abandon religion or that they will never go to a religious service again, the passage says they will abandon the ”TRUTH“.

THE CONSEQUENCE OF LEAVING THE TRUTH IS SERIOUS:

            A.        Without truth on cannot be free from sin – John 8:32, ”and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.“ ASV

            B.         Without truth we cannot

Know God – 2 Tim 3:7, ”ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.“ ASV

2.         Some [people] will ”… give heed to seducing spirits“

Many will be tricked by seducing philosophies originating in the mind of fallible [i.e. mortal] men.

The Roman Pope – Calls himself ”Holy Father“ --- A title reserved for God – cf. Matthew 23:9, ”And call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven.“ KJV

3.         Some will follow the ”… doctrines of demons,“ ***** some people will follow the devil’s advocates [i.e.  Church of Satan], etc.

4.         The promoters of false teaching or doctrines of demons will deceive many through the insincerity of liars, whose consciences are seared,

II.     IN THE LAST DAYS FROM 2 Timothy 3:1-7,

”1 But know this, that in the last days grievous times shall come.2 For men shall be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, haughty, railers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, 3 without natural affection, implacable, slanderers, without self-control, fierce, no lovers of good,

4 traitors, headstrong, puffed up, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God;

5 holding a form of godliness, but having denied the power therefore. From these also turn away. 6 For of these are they that creep into houses, and take captive silly women laden with sins, led away by divers lusts, 7 ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.“ ASV

III.    IN THE LAST DAYS FROM 2 Peter 3:3-4, ”3 knowing this first, that in the last days mockers shall come with mockery, walking after their own lusts, 4 and saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for, from the day that the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation.“ ASV

CONCLUSION:

These passages do not tell us about the timing of the judgment for no man knows when that will be.

But these passages tell us about the continuing condition of people generation after generation. For in this last dispensation of time some will come to God on His terms and many will not.

So, what should we do in view of these facts about time and people’s actions?

Rom. 5:1-6, {glc}

LIVING LIFE

IN A PROFITABLE WAY

Eccl. 3:1-11

1 To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:

2 A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted;

3 A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up;

4 A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance;

5 A time to cast away stones, and a time to

gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing;

6 A time to get, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away;

7 A time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak;

8 A time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace.

9 What profit hath he that worketh in that wherein he labors?

10 I have seen the travail, which God hath given to the sons of men to be exercised in it.

11 He hath made every thing beautiful in his time: also he hath set the world in their heart, so that no man can find out the work that God maketh from the beginning to the end.

CONSIDER THIS:

As a person lives in the world from birth until physical death there are some facts that they must always be cognizant of; the wise man (i.e. Solomon) tells us to enjoy life and all the good things in life. Yet Solomon also warns us to constantly be aware of the fact; ”God is watching and waiting for us after this life is over“, in consequence of this fact we must make adequate preparation to die while we also enjoy living in the world.

Preparation for eventual physical death requires of us that we seek God and submit to God’s instructions via the Bible that tell us what is necessary to be ready when death comes.

NOTE:

Eccl. 11:8-12:1 - 8 But if a man live many years, and rejoice in them all; yet let him remember the days of darkness; for they shall be many. All that cometh is vanity. 9 Rejoice, O young man, in thy youth; and let thy heart cheer thee in the days of thy youth, and walk in the ways of thine heart, and in the sight of thine eyes: but know thou, that for all these things God will bring thee into judgment. 10 Therefore remove sorrow from thy heart, and put away evil from thy flesh: for childhood and youth are vanity.

Ecclesiastes 12

12:1 Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth, while the evil days come not, nor the years draw nigh, when thou shall say, I have no pleasure in them; KJV

A BUSY TIME

The great work of teaching and seeking to change the direction of other people who know not God is a constant preoccupation of those of us that make up the congregation in this community (Matt. 28:18-20). We take seriously the teachings that are found in the New Testament that instruct us to convert the lost (2 Cor. 4:3-5). There is not a day that we ignore or fail to seek that which is right in our relationship and personal interaction with those in the community who are not serving God (Rom. 15:2-3).

We have just finished a good gospel meeting with brother Billy Ford from Arkansas. Our next Gospel meeting will be in the Spring of 2010 with Arthur Adams from Plymouth and Indianapolis, IN. The dates for that meeting will be April 22-25, 2010.

Brother Adams has been working with the church in Plymouth, Indiana while operating a business in Indianapolis. I am sure we can look forward to another good meeting.   Glc

I Did Not Know That!

{A Look at the word Autonomy}

Not long ago a person I was working with in an attempt to convert him from a false religion stopped me while I was presenting a statement about the independence of each congregation by exclaiming ”I did not know that.“ After some consideration it dawned on me that there may be many people who are seeking true Biblical doctrine who were unaware of the independence of each congregation of churches of Christ. For that reason this article has been written.  I do pray that some will examine my reasoning and exegesis of the Bible texts to follow and find satisfaction (i.e. acceptance) of the Biblical doctrine of local congregational autonomy.

What does the word autonomy mean?

- (Autonomy: "self-law", hence, self-governing...the right of self-government...a self-governing community.)  -Autonomy = Independence & self-government.

CHURCHES IN THE EARLY N.T. ERA WERE AUTONOMOUS:

The Biblical pattern of the early church (i.e. independent congregational government) is the only way a congregation may organize to this very day. There is no other organizational structure reveled for the local congregation found in the New Testament.

Each Local Church Is A Complete Organization Within Itself                                                                 Acts 14:23 - And when they had ordained them elders in every church, and had prayed with fasting, they commended them to the Lord, on whom they believed. KJV

Acts 20:28 - Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood. KJV Phil. 1:1 - Paul and Timothy, the servants of Jesus Christ, to all the saints in Christ Jesus which are at Philippi, with the bishops and deacons: KJV

CONSIDER THIS:

The organizational structure of a congregation is revealed in the three references sited above; the Biblical organization for local congregational function consists of elders, deacons, and other members.

This concept will work perfectly with each congregation wherever the congregation exists in the world. The congregation has no organizational function beyond its own ability. The ability of each congregation is determined by the size, spirituality of its members (i.e. maturity), and its financial strength.

Each congregation is responsible to God in three area of work:

Eph. 4:10-16 - 10 He that descended is the same also that ascended up far above all heavens, that he might fill all things.) 11 And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; 12 For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: 13 Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ: 14 That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive; 15 But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ: 16 From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love.

1.     Evangelism - spreading and supporting the teaching of Christ.

2.     Benevolence – Taking care of the congregation’s needy.

3.     Edification of itself – building up the membership of the congregation (i.e. aiding the members to grow – mature in the faith).

The above three areas of work assigned by the Lord for the congregation when performed to the extent of their ability with their resources is authorized, pleasing to the Lord, and completely acceptable to God.

Through the above process each congregation is acceptable to God.

I know of no Biblical teaching that authorized a plurality of elders in one church to assume or accept the responsibility of a sister congregation’s work; either in part or the whole.

The concept of sponsoring elderships, congregational interlinking such as is current in the Roman Catholic Church, the Methodist, Presbyterian, Lutheran, Baptist, and many others religious organizations pursuing unauthorized means and methods to activate the universal church (i.e. all the members throughout the world or all the churches throughout the world) is without Biblical support.

CONSIDER THIS:

Any system or any organizational arrangement that is not authorized by the Bible is unacceptable to our Lord.  Anything that is unauthorized by our Lord via the Holy Scriptures that is practiced by man is sinful. There is no other statement that will adequately define this departure from the Biblical pattern; this is transgression of God’s instruction.

ANOTHER QUESTION REGARDING THE WORD

… AUTONOMY …

Question by JES

Garreth Clair please tell me why you have ignored the great famine and the uniting of all churches in the New Testament to send help to the church in Jerusalem to distribute in your previous article? Apparently you have overlooked this occasion of activating the universal church in the book of Acts.

ANSWER by glclair@aol.com

The reference by the questioner is a good question but I did not conceal this situation for the purpose which he seems to imply. The truth about the case regarding the famine in Judea has no bearing on the subject of my first attempt to clarify the nature and work of the congregation. I understand that our questioner here accepts the fact that the congregation is autonomous but wants to know if perhaps in our haste to explain the nature of the congregation’s work we forgot or overlooked this situation.

The case referred to here is first revealed to us in the Book of Acts as follows - Acts 11:27-30 - 27 and in these days came prophets from Jerusalem unto Antioch. 28 And there stood up one of them named Agabus, and signified by the spirit that there should be great dearth throughout all the world: which came to pass in the days of Claudius Caesar. 29 Then the disciples, every man according to his ability, determined to send relief unto the brethren which dwelt in Judaea: 30 Which also they did, and sent it to the elders by the hands of Barnabas and Saul. (27) ”In those days prophets came down from Jerusalem to Antioch, (28) and one of them, named Agabus, arose and signified through the Spirit that there would be a great famine throughout the whole world, which also occurred in the days of Claudius. (29) Then the disciples, every one according as he was prospered, determined to send relief to the brethren who dwelt in Judea; (30) which also they did, sending it to the elders by the hand of Barnabas and Saul.“ (KJV)

COMMENTARY NOTE:                                                                                                                         ”This is the first account we have of the gift of prophesy among the disciples, but Agabus and his companions appear to have been already known as prophets, doubtless from previous exercise of this gift. The brethren, therefore, did not hesitate to give full credit to the prediction, and knowing that such a famine must cause peculiar distress among the extremely poor in Judea, they were prompt to supply their wants even before the period of distress arrived. Their benevolence is not less remarkable than that of the Church in Jerusalem at the beginning. The poor for whom that Church provided were in their midst, and suffering from present want; but the disciples in Antioch anticipate a state of distress yet in the future, on the part of brethren to whom they are personally unknown, and provide for it in advance. No more striking evidence could be given, at once, of their benevolence, and their confidence in the predictions of their own prophets.

This benevolent supply was sent to the Elders, by whom, we are to understand, it was distributed to the final recipients. This is the first time that elders, as a distinct class, are mentioned in connection with the congregations of disciples. They are mentioned, however, as a class of officials then well known, and, consequently, we must infer that they had been appointed in the Churches at a still earlier period.“ (From Acts of the Apostles)

GLC COMMENTS:                                                                                                                    The commentary points directly to the exact points that I discussed earlier regarding the nature of congregational autonomy. The receiving church (i.e. Jerusalem) received the benevolence from the various congregations and the elders of the congregation in Jerusalem distributed the gifts. There is no departure from the autonomous congregational design that we discussed in the previous article ….

CONSIDER THIS:                                                                               Since the New Testament teaches us that each congregation is autonomous, why would we alter the teaching in order to support activating the universal church with some super addition to distribute to needy brethren in far away places when the method (i.e. pattern) has been established for this work by God via the New Testament? Indeed, the Divine Pattern is for each congregation to send to the emergency need in another congregation or congregations and send the needed supplies to the needy congregation’s elders - one at time for distribution by their elders without any sponsoring or intermediary distributing point (i.e. another organization).                                                                                                                                  glclair@aol.com                                                                                                                                 October 12, 2009

FREEDOM FROM SIN

Every right thinking person surely has a desire to be free from the stain of sin in their life. It is not surprising that since the events of September 11, 2001 that many people are doing some soul searching. It is a serious matter to suddenly die without having taken time to get ones life right with God. Indeed, we all know that Jesus Christ will be the judge at judgment day - cf., John 12:48, "He that rejects me, and receives not my sayings, hath one that judges him: the word that I spoke, the same shall judge him in the last day." {ASV} Please notice also the statement of Paul in Hebrews 5:8-9, 8 though he was a Son, yet learned obedience by the things which he suffered;  9 and having been made perfect, he became unto all them that obey him the author of eternal salvation; {ASV}

HAVE YOU MADE A DECISION YET?

If you have not made a decision to become a Christian, following are some facts you need to know - cf., Acts 11:26, "and when he had found him, he brought him unto Antioch. And it came to pass, that even for a whole year they were gathered together with the church, and taught much people, and that the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch." {ASV} Yes, the person that has come to Christ on His terms is privileged to wear the name "Christian." It is also true that no one can save you from your sin but God. God will save you if you will come to Him and accept His remedy for your sin, the Scriptural method to receive remission of sin is:

Ψ       Hear the gospel --- Romans 10:17

Ψ       Believe the gospel message --- Mark 16:15-16

Ψ       Repent of past sin --- Acts 2:38

Ψ       Confess with the mouth the Son of God {i.e., Jesus Christ} --- Romans 10:10

Ψ       Be baptized:

1.                   A burial in Water --- Romans 6:1-6

2.                   For the remission of sin --- Acts 2:38

THE LORD WILL THEN, ADD YOU TO HIS CHURCH

Acts 2:47, "praising God, and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to them day by day those that were saved." {ASV}  --- glclair@aol.com

------------------ MANKIND'S BASIC NEED ------------------

TEXT: 2 Timothy 2:1-6,

1 Thou therefore, my child, be strengthened in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. 2 And the things which thou hast heard from me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also. 3 Suffer hardship with (me), as a good soldier of Christ Jesus. 4 No soldier on service entangles himself in the affairs of (this) life; that he may please him who enrolled him as soldier.  5 And if also a man contend in the games, he is not crowned, except he have contended lawfully. 6 The husbandmen that laboreth must be the first to partake of the fruits.

INTRODUCTION:

In the above passage, Paul makes it clear that the basic need of every person is to be saved from sin. Throughout this world, mankind, without Jesus Christ, is in a tragic condition, please note the following:

I.      The Bible describes man's condition, without Christ, in at least six phrases:

1.     He is lost -- Luke 19:10, "For the Son of man came to seek and save that which was lost." ASV

A.                 The entire population of the earth is lost.

B.                  Lost, as a city is lost when it falls into the hands of terrorists.

C.                 As a sick person is lost whenever his sickness is terminal.

2.     without strength -- Romans 5:6, "For while we were yet weak, in due season Christ died for the ungodly."

A.                 The grace of God is provided for all.

B.                  Even though we are unable to save ourselves, God has made it possible for us to be saved from sin in a cooperative effort.

C.                 God will save us from sin, if we obey Him - cf., Hebrews 5:8-9.

3.                   Without hope -- Ephesians 2:12, "that ye were at that time separate from Christ, alienated from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of the promise, having no hope and without God in the world." ASV

4.                   Without promise -- Ephesians 2:12,

that ye were at that time separate from Christ, alienated from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of the promise, having no hope and without God in the world. ASV

5.                   Without liberty -- John 8:32-34,

32 and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

33 They answered unto him, we are Abraham's seed, and have never yet been in bondage to any man: how sayest thou, ye shall be made free?

34 Jesus answered them, Verily, verily; I say unto you, every one that committeth sin is the bondservant of sin. ASV

A.                 Liberty comes to man through hearing of the truth.

B.                  Without liberty, we are servants of sin.

John 8:44, "Ye are of (your) father the devil, and the lusts of your father it is your will to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and standeth not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father thereof." ASV

6.      Without life {i.e., spiritually dead} -- Ephesians 2:1, "And you (did he make alive,) when ye were dead through your trespasses and sins," ASV

A. Destitute of righteousness.

B. Cut off from God, the fountain of life.

C. Dead, as the condemned murderer is said to be "a dead man" as he awaits execution.

II.     Man does not have to remain in this condition. This is only the diagnosis; there is a remedy, a cure:

1.     The sinner is lost -- "Christ came to seek and to save."

2.     The sinner is without strength -- "Christ died for us."

3.     The sinner is without hope or promise -- Ephesians 2:13, "But now in Christ Jesus ye that once were far off are made nigh in the blood of Christ." ASV

4.     without Life -- John 10:10, "The thief cometh not, but that he may steal, and kill, and destroy: I came that they may have life, and may have (it) abundantly." ASV

John 20:30-31,

30 Many other signs therefore did Jesus in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book:

31 but these are written, that ye may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye may have life in his name. ASV

5.     1 Timothy 2:4, "who would have all men to be saved, and come to the knowledge of the truth." ASV

III.    ARE YOU READY, to be saved from sin, to have strength in Christ, to have hope, to have the promise of everlasting life, to be free from sin, to have liberty in Christ, and to have hope of eternal life?

A.                   All of this is possible for you today.

B.                   Will you come to Christ on His terms:

1.                   Believe the gospel

2.                   Repent of your sin

3.                   Confess Christ as God's Son

4.                   Be baptized "for remission of sin."

Ψ       Through immersion

Ψ       As the final act of obedience -- 1 Peter 3:21

Arise from the watery grave of baptism a new creature in Christ -- Romans 6:1-6.

C.                 The Lord will add you to His Body {i.e., the church} -- Acts 2:47

NO ONE WILL MISS THIS APPOINTMENT

[The end of this universe]

The fears of many people today throughout the world are rooted in events that have taken place over the past 60 years. You see back in the World War II days the use of weapons of mass destruction such as poison gases, disease, and the atomic and hydrogen bombs were being developed and were being used in some cases. These weapons of mass destruction were spreading throughout the world from country to country. It was thought by some that the use of these weapons would wipe out mankind from the earth. This was and still is a false expectation on man’s part because God say that HE will destroy the universe in HIS own time. These ideas that man will end his own existence in this universe is impossible because God has said that the destruction of the universe will come as scheduled someday – cf. 1 Thess. 5:1-4 - 1 But of the times and the seasons, brethren, ye have no need that I write unto you. 2 For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night. 3 For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape. 4 but ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief.

The end of this universe, all that God has created and sustained for all these past 6,000 + years will come to an end at the trumpet of God at the last day – cf.  2 Peter 3:9-14 - 9 The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance. 10 a New Heaven and Earth but the day of the Lord will come like a thief, in which the heavens will pass away with a roar and the elements will be destroyed with intense heat, and the earth and its works will be burned up. 11 Since all these things are to be destroyed in this way, what sort of people ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness, 12 looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be destroyed by burning, and the elements will melt with intense heat! 13 but according to His promise we are looking for new heavens and a new earth, in which righteousness dwells. 14 Therefore, beloved, since you look for these things, be diligent to be found by Him in peace, spotless and blameless, (NASU)

There will be no 1,000 year reign of Jesus Christ on the earth as is predicted by some religious teachers; there will be no warning, there will be no second chance, no purgatory for some Roman Catholics who are hoping that such a place exists. Indeed, the day will come swiftly, without warning, and the whole event will take place on the last day – cf. John 6:39-40 - 39 And this is the Father's will which hath sent me, that of all which he hath given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last day. 40 And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day. (KJV)

John 11:24-26 - 24 Martha saith unto him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day. 25 Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the

life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: 26 And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this? (KJV)

John 12:48 - 48 He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day

The Bible tells us these things so that we will know that we must make preparations for the after life now. We must not delay our belief and obedience to the instructions of our Lord revealed to us in his Book, the Bible.

You can be prepared for that day that will include everyone that has ever lived on this earth; the last day. You see there cannot be but one last day – will you seek the way of the Lord before that day comes - it is our sincere hope that you will. There will be no survivors to live, work, play, and hope for another day because the end has come!

Therefore, dear reader as God spoke to Israel of old --- Amos 4:12-13, 12 Therefore thus will I do unto thee, O Israel: and because I will do this unto thee, prepare to meet thy God, O Israel. 13 For, lo, he that formed the mountains, and createth the wind, and declareth unto man what is his thought, that maketh the morning darkness, and treadeth upon the high places of the earth, The LORD, The God of hosts, is his name. (KJV)
